    Don’t know where you got your information but when copper is too expensive for large scale electrical applications, generally it’s aluminum that’s used not steel. It conducts electricity far better than steel and steel actually has far worse corrosion resistance than copper

      A lot of Aluminum Wire is what is known as ACSR which is Aluminum Conductor, Steel Reinforced which is where there is a steel core of the aluminum cable, to provide more strength for long spans of cable across poles or towers.

      Since glass fiber cables don't need repeater equipment anymore when crossing oceans, undersea data cables contain little to no copper at all. I also have never heard of under sea cable recycling. Sending out a ship to collect it would cost more than the value of the recycled copper, and all new cables are on top of the oldest cables, so dragging up the old cables would damage the new cables. Recycling is good but this video makes no sense at all.

      @JohnWatkinsUK 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jwstolk Glass fibre (fibreoptic) cables that cross oceans very much DO need repeaters every 60m to 400m depending on cable design. They require a copper conductor as a path to power those repeaters.

    My prediction is that eventually old rubbish dumps will be mined for their resources. Up until quite modern times everything went to land fill, cars, machinery, factory waist, not much at all was recycled. By the time metal prices become high enough to make it worthwhile all the biodegradable stuff will have been broken down into dirt leaving mainly glass, rubber, plastic and the valuable metals. Not much iron of course but a lot of the non ferrous metals including gold, silver and copper. Thousands of car batteries were dumped. Gold? Tons of old furniture was dumped and a lot from deceased estates some of which would have had gold jewellery hidden in them. I’m old enough to remember seeing these things being tossed. There were no gates or fences people were free to scavenge the dumps and it was amazing the stuff that would turn up. That certainly was a different era.

      Landfill ming has been going on since the 1990's. I had a client who owned a landfill and he began mining. It accomplished 2 things: The value of the material being mined, and the air space being recovered.

    During the Cold War, we put listening devices under the Soviet cables in the North Sea. The Soviets would lift the cable to inspect it, see no damage or tampering, then lay it back on the listening device. We had ears on their northern fleet for like 15 years!

      Copper does corrode - it all depends on environment it is in. A bit it acid, salt or their fumes and it will disappear in a while. And how about car wiring failing, for eg. when wrong type of coolant is used - also type of copper corrosion. In general everywhere where there's current flow and wire is exposed to chemicals there's corrosion.
