This caused a stampede, killing 11 people and injuring 26 others.
This was how the magic was made when Al was starting to take off. Personally, I'd pay to watch him perform in that bathroom he recorded his song in, I love Weird Al. 💗

Al has said that one of his college roomies tried to get him to try drugs to boost his creativity, but he declined. He felt that if he did take drugs, he'd be normal.
He actually worked in that college radio station. He just couldn't get permission to use it to record his song. He decided to record it in the bathroom because it had decent acoustics that met his needs.

I remember hearing this on Dr. Demento back in my childhood. My sister and I just sat there for a moment in utter shock and disgust until we started listening to the lyrics. Then we just lost it. I can remember watching this performance when it first aired and really not knowing what to make of Weird Al standing there Parodying one of the biggest bands of the day with bare feet and a horrible sounding instrument. In the end it was always the wit and hilarity of his lyrics that won people over. I can recall having to take the bus to work when my car broke down and all I could think as I sat on those buses watching the next weirdo get on was.. "HEY! he's gonna sit by YOU!! 🤣🤣🤣
one of his original influences was Spike Jones who was the Father of Parody songs (followed later by Stan Freeberg). Spike had a whole band that used these kinds of sound effects and strange voices. They made many successful "party" albums. I saw this episode with Tom Snyder. Boy this takes me back, because Tom was an excellent interviewer and his interviews of John Lennon and Alfred Hitchcock are considered the classics in interviews.
The radio station was one of his first jobs in college. He was like his college's version of Dr Demento, the host of a radio show that would play novelty songs.

Interestingly enough, Dare To Be Stupid was one of Weird Al's style parodies - in this case, he was parodying the musical style of Devo. that is Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz. Al's drummer for 40 years. This was before he had an actually back up band. My Bologna was recorded in the college bathroom. This song was recorded from a live appearance on the Dr Demento show. He wrote the parody while waiting outside the DJ booth. Jon Schwartz happened to be in the radio station at the same time and offered to bang on his accordin case as a drum. After the taping, Jon said to Al "That was fun. You should have a band and I will be your drummer." The rest is history.

There used to be a radio station here in Phoenix called KRIZ. One Saturday night after this came out one of the DJs played this and "Another One Bites the Dust". That is ALL he played for 4 hours, alternating between the 2 songs. He was fired by the following Monday.

Al is also a stand up guy because he asked Paul McCartney for permission to make Live and Let Die into Chicken Pot Pie. Paul objected being a strict vegetarian and Al to his credit bowed to Paul's wishes.

This song is a parody of Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust." When it was released as a single, the flip side had a song named "Gotta Boogie" which was an original song. I only remember the chorus, "I gotta boogie on my finger and I can't shake it off!" I also remember seeing this episode of "The Tomorrow Show." Yes, I'm old. You need to check out his movie "UHF."
So first off, that guy on the accordion case is John 'Bermuda' Schwartz. They met shortly before Al first performed this song and he's been Al's lead drummer to this day. Second, the radio station they refer to is the college station that Al was the late-night DJ for. The bathroom was across the HALL from the studio, and Al used it because he liked the acoustics in the room. The bit about them not letting him use the studio was just a joke by this show's host (just like the line about people turning their radios off). Of all the takes he's done of My Bologna, he still considers that one the best, and it's on Al's Medium Rarities album. Lastly, you can't really appreciate this song unless you've experienced it. When I was in college we had a sudden snow storm one day. Class hadn't been canceled by the time I had to leave, so I was on the bus while it was coming down. The snow delays had packed about 3 loads of people into the one bus. Right about minute 15 of a 5 minute trip (of which we'd only traveled about 90 second's distance), this song started going through my head. Really helped me get through the experience.

This is Al's FIRST TV appearance. There is no music video for this song. Most of the songs on his first album is Al on accordion (backed with a band). The version of this song on his album is just a live performance too, recorded live on the legendary Dr Demento radio show with Bermuda banging on Al's accordion case.

That guy doing to percussion behind Al is Jon Schwartz. He has been with Al since the beginning and is still drummer on all of Al's songs. Yankovic credits his band as equals and has said that without them, he wouldn't be the megastar he is today. And I think he's right.
I grew up with Doctor Demento Show, and this early Weird Al really is what that show was about....the videos really came a lot later in Weird Al's career. Songs like "Making Love in a Subaru" and others are worth searching out.

that is Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz. Al's drummer for 40 years. This was before he had an actually back up band.
My Bologna was recorded in the college bathroom.
This song was recorded from a live appearance on the Dr Demento show. He wrote the parody while waiting outside the DJ booth. Jon Schwartz happened to be in the radio station at the same time and offered to bang on his accordin case as a drum. After the taping, Jon said to Al "That was fun. You should have a band and I will be your drummer."
The rest is history.

IMO this is hands down the ultimate Weird Al performance ever! The percussionist is John Bermuda Schwartz still Al’s drummer to this day and the main drum is actually Al’s accordion case! 😂😂❤ enjoyed you big time! Great song/video pick!!!
There used to be a radio station here in Phoenix called KRIZ. One Saturday night after this came out one of the DJs played this and "Another One Bites the Dust". That is ALL he played for 4 hours, alternating between the 2 songs. He was fired by the following Monday.

John "Bermuda" Schwartz told him after this that he should form a band and he is still Al's drummer. You are 100% right in that Al shows people what can be done. Al is also a stand up guy because he asked Paul McCartney for permission to make Live and Let Die into Chicken Pot Pie. Paul objected being a strict vegetarian and Al to his credit bowed to Paul's wishes.
Al's original song UHF is great and talk about creative, the video is all him, dressing up like every Pop star of the 80s.

First live performance ever by Weird Al, who was a college kid at the time. This is the Late Late Show with Tom Snyder, which was usually a pretty serious show. You had to stay up until midnight to watch it.

The "box" that Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz is banging on is Al's accordion case! I remember first hearing Weird Al on Dr. Demento's radio show when I was in high school. This song is a parody of Queen's "Another One Bites the Dust." When it was released as a single, the flip side had a song named "Gotta Boogie" which was an original song. I only remember the chorus, "I gotta boogie on my finger and I can't shake it off!" I also remember seeing this episode of "The Tomorrow Show." Yes, I'm old. You need to check out his movie "UHF."
So first off, that guy on the accordion case is John 'Bermuda' Schwartz. They met shortly before Al first performed this song and he's been Al's lead drummer to this day.
Second, the radio station they refer to is the college station that Al was the late-night DJ for. The bathroom was across the HALL from the studio, and Al used it because he liked the acoustics in the room. The bit about them not letting him use the studio was just a joke by this show's host (just like the line about people turning their radios off). Of all the takes he's done of My Bologna, he still considers that one the best, and it's on Al's Medium Rarities album.
Lastly, you can't really appreciate this song unless you've experienced it. When I was in college we had a sudden snow storm one day. Class hadn't been canceled by the time I had to leave, so I was on the bus while it was coming down. The snow delays had packed about 3 loads of people into the one bus. Right about minute 15 of a 5 minute trip (of which we'd only traveled about 90 second's distance), this song started going through my head. Really helped me get through the experience.

Many years ago, I went with my sister to tour Cal Poly San Luis Obispo as a prospective school for her, and on the tour, they showed us the bathroom across from the radio station. It was pretty cool.
I've been a fan of Weird Al since the 1970s. I used to listen to him on Dr. Demento. His dad was a grammy award winning accordion playing polka king. Weird Al is one talented bro.

This is Al's FIRST TV appearance. There is no music video for this song. Most of the songs on his first album is Al on accordion (backed with a band). The version of this song on his album is just a live performance too, recorded live on the legendary Dr Demento radio show with Bermuda banging on Al's accordion case.
The guy that bangs the box and makes all the funny noises is Al's drummer John "Bermuda" Schwartz. John has been with Al since Day One, and they are the best of friends, and John's still with Al, recording and touring. They've known each other for at least 40 years, if not longer.

That guy doing to percussion behind Al is Jon Schwartz. He has been with Al since the beginning and is still drummer on all of Al's songs. Yankovic credits his band as equals and has said that without them, he wouldn't be the megastar he is today. And I think he's right.

I grew up with Doctor Demento Show, and this early Weird Al really is what that show was about....the videos really came a lot later in Weird Al's career. Songs like "Making Love in a Subaru" and others are worth searching out.
I remember my dad coming up to wake me up , telling me I had to see this. It was the "Tomorrow" show with Tom Snyder that aired around 1 am where we lived. My dad was a musician. He also played the accordion and loved the old song parodies by Spike Jones. When he saw Al, he knew this kid was gonna be something big. I still have all my Weird Al records. :)
