Nothing more frustrating than an interviewer constantly interrupting & talking over their guests
Yeah this guy can’t shut up.
I just said that very thing to myself out loud. Fucking irritating.
Guests, no problem. The great Christopher Hitchens? It was very frustrating, even though these two had a long relationship.
It’s unreal… It’s like he’s got some kind of compulsion
It seems pointless to have a guest if one won't let him/her speak.
I could not even finish watching an interview with one of the world's greatest talkers because the host could not stop interrupting him. Charlie Rose, please shut up!

If you are limiting your understanding to that of Mr Hitchens, then maybe it's time to look deeper into the miracle of life. NDE experiences (You Tube) might be a good starting point.

Charlie Rose cementing his place as the most overrated, cloying, name-dropping and sycophantic of interviewers. He doesn't want to learn (or help us do so) he wants to show he's the smart kid at the smart kid's table.
As much as I dislike Charlie Rose for a variety of reasons, one of which was he way he always interrupted and talked over people, he did at least ask good questions most of the time that required some substantive answers.

Hitchens argument that all religions are man made is compelling. He shows that the idea of a personal God who watches over everything is ridiculous. The idea of a personal God may be comforting but it is not real.

I practice the Dharma of Zen Buddhism, but in a purely secular way, as a philosophy rather than as a religion.

This interviewer consistently interrupts his "guests" answers with his own comments. Thankfully, Christopher Hitchens is, and has always been, intellectually equipped to deal with these kinds of interviewers. Even so, Rose should develop the ability to listen to his guests before barging in with his own viewpoint.

Absolutely right. Preempts, steps on and/or interrupts Christopher so often, cutting off Christopher's sentences and answers before he can finish a thought.
Rose always thought that he was himself so brilliant that viewers wanted to hear him.

Certainly (some) religions have used misused spiritual guidance by replacing it with political control of one sort or another.

So maybe you can appreciate that it's difficult for me to follow through any cogent points you wish to make regarding any purpose to life.
However, in your sweeping (one size fits all it seems) condemnation of NDE (Near Death Experiences), nowhere can I find any personal experience(s) of this phenomena. So on the face of it, you are way above your head by trying to minimize the reality of these experiences-- not to mention the truths/understandings contained within them.
It is one thing to disagree with the validity of the NDE experiences, but unless you can offer any other explanation for these events, then your objections (such as they are) are no more than opinions-- which seem to be based upon lack of knowledge and personal experience.
The use of "famous names" to support your point of view, doesn't really amount to very much.
@Generic Name Forgive me if I have mis-interpreted your EMail, but it appears that you reject any recollections of NDE's (Near Death Experiences).
One would normally expect that any valid/ worthwhile comments on this matter, would come from those (people) who have personally experienced a NDE.rather than any theorist.
Great thinkers or philosophers etc might well have commented on matters pertaining to life and death, but often that amounts to little more than say (for example) a garbage collector commenting upon the principles of astro-physics; --in other words it is vital that personal experience/understanding rather than 'off the shelf' intellectual theories, are really what matters.
Unfortunately we live in a society in which the name or social standing of a personage is accepted rather than any personal experience (or spiritual understanding) they might have had.
Yes, the world has its quota of charlatans, not to mention drug takers and others of the "listen to me I know everything " ilk. They are 'two a penny' as you well know.
Those who are unable to accept that consciousness exists on many levels (say life and after life existence) , usually do so either by reason of a lack of understanding, intellectual prejudice or by reason of not personally having experienced A NDE.
It might be preferably to heed the actual accounts of those who have experienced a NDE, rather than all the renown theorists who can do little more than that they are known for;-- theorize.
You Tube has many personal accounts of people who have personally (and actually) experienced a NDE.
I've read ' God is not Great ', I agree with lots of it , I need to read it again ,it amazes me how many people ive encountered who insist that I must ' believe ' in something , that I must have beliefs , as if there is no other way to look at and understand the world...as if experience has no bearing on my existence .

Rose is annoying. Overly dramatic, it's like he's acting the part of an interviewer - a bad one who wants the camera mostly on him and interjects constantly with non insightful comments at that. Good riddance.

Love Hitchens in these one on one interviews but why does Rose insist on talking over his guests?! It's obnoxious and unhelpful.
I love him. I miss him. He was great all around. But, although his thoughts on Iraq are all true, his conclusion on us going in there is maybe the one thing I disagree with him on.

I occasionally like to listen to adversarial interviews like this with Christopher Hitchens. Listening to how his voice inflection changes when he’s arguing more aggressively.
Never did agree with Hitch on his Iraq and other pro-intervention takes, but on religion and iconoclasm I'm 100% with him

Or you know we're factually a product of a supernatural event/aka creation of the universe as we know it. We have a supernatural creator, you can't really debate that. Simple concept causation, everything had to come from something, we're a product of a super natural creator. An entity that literally created everything from nothing. I'm not saying whatever that was is a christian god, but it is well beyond your frame of reference. To pretend religion is based on irrational fear alone is absurd. You're simply scared of the idea that something you can't explain has a certain kind of power over you, even if it is simply a clockmaker god.

Hitchens understood religion very well. His cultural/soclal critique grasps the psychological aspect of religious manipulation. In that regard, he was as good as anyone. However, he never fully grasped imperialism or imperialist rivalry. He became a cynic as a failed elite socialist, or as Terry Eagleton called him, a champagne socialist, now akin to Zizek and other disenchanted idealists.
So, what happened to all of that oil? Is it still there? Why?
A dialogue does not consist of attempting to catch the opponent out, but instead of carefully listening to and trying to understand their arguments, then offering reasonable additions or counter arguments to them. In other words, a dialogue should be two people trying, cooperatively, to produce the strongest possible arguments on either side of an issue. Charlie Rose does not do this in this interview, nor do most interviewers today. It baffles me that journalism, which the Ancient Greeks got so right, has gone so dreadfully wrong.
Logic should be the first language of anyone who contributes to the spread of information in any form or capacity. Instead, we live in a world of misinterpretation, misrepresentation, logical fallacies left unchecked, and endless attacks on straw men.
It gets us nowhere if we are unable to see that a debate, discussion, conversation (whatever you want to call it, I prefer the term ‘dialogue’), should be a constructive session of logical argumentation, not a series of intellectual attacks on individuals.
In order for us not to destroy ourselves, and to prosper indefinitely, this is the necessary next step of our evolution, should be choose to accept it.

In countless interviews and lectures he demurred on such questions (whether about Orwell or TJ). In that vain, I will not venture to say against which party he would be more polemic. You simply cannot say with a factual basis that no secularist or atheist would desecrate a sacred building.
The host is not good. They talk over, consistently interrupt and don't appear to listen to the individual who is supposed to be their guest - not to mention the embarrassing things they say.
This interviewer was very rude! Hitch was very tolerant.

He continuously asks a question in the middle of his answering Charlie's last question and interrupts him again.
His blatant narcissism as to control the conversation along with Christopher just proves how insecure he is to have somebody such as Christopher Hitchens on his show.
For the viewer it was excruciating to watch and proves to me how little interviewing etiquette Charlie Rose ever had.

A great insight! Thanks for highlighting this. The funny thing, though, is that Hitchens had a most musical prose style. One of the things that set him apart from the rest was that his prose sang. In fact, he himself narrated the audio version of "God Is Not Great", and I can tell you that it was the thing that sold me on his writing. Beautiful.
I wish Charlie would just shut up after he asks his question.
