As someone who grew up on Bond and bought all the 60's soundtracks, I gotta say--this may be the best Bond song of them all. A crime it was not used in an opening scene.
If it was up to me, she would have sang the theme for "No Time to Die". Haven't heard the theme for that yet, but I'm just saying that she deserves to sing another one.
I was a kid working for a movie theater when this movie came out, and I’m telling you that no song makes you feel more bad ass than this when you’re cleaning a movie theater.

I can't believe the producers passed on using this for the opening titles! David Arnold's music is a brilliant homage to John Barry with a modern twist, and K.D. Lang's vocals are amazing! This should easily be placed amongst the top James Bond title tracks of all time!
@@stickynorth It's odd. They did 4 movies in a row with one theme for the villain, and the other theme for the love story. In the first 3, the villain was first, the love story was at the end. But in this film, they swapped. Maybe just as well, because Sheryl Crow's song at the end would have been worse than having it at the beginning, since it was a "depressing" love story, not an uplifting one. What annoyed me after-the-fact was the way they butcher movies on TV these days, if you watch TND on a commercial station, you DON'T EVEN HEAR the end theme at all! (And it's the BEST part of the movie!)
This and Goldfinger are the best James Bond Themes ever. There are a couple of good songs but none of the others have that grandeur and are so well sung, as these two are.

Lang's sexuality was a big no no, so they bumped her to the end credits and then went on a mad search for a more markatable artist. Tomorrow Never Dies has probably the most rejected Bond theme songs of all time because of this.

This Is, in my view, the most underrated song in the Bond franchise because it harkens back to so much that one historically associated with Bond. First, Lang belts out the lyrics that remind one of Dame Shirley Bassey. Second, the horns draw on the Goldfinger theme. Third, like Goldfinger, the lyrics are about the villain Elliot Carver.
Biggest missed opportunity that they didn't use this one in the film. The lyrics are extremely well-written and the motif is just so... Seductive, mysterious, heroic and powerful. Easily one of the best Bond songs, or at very least in the Top 10 had it been used.
In addition to sounding like the better Bond song, it really fits the overall premise of the movie - the pen being mightier than the sword, and tomorrow can be whatever the writer makes it.

I remember playing the game on my PS1. I finished it and went to take something to drink from the kitchen. I heard the beginning of the song and run back, just to listen to the most amazing Bond song... Still can't understand why it was not the main song.

This is actually the original, David Arnold even placed the main melody of this song all over the musical score. The Sheryl Crow one was a replacement.
This unquestionably should've been over the opening credits. Classic Bond sound: dynamic vocals, killer melody, and lyrics which reflect the theme of the story. I'd easily put this in the top ten Bond themes, too bad hardly anybody's heard it. I don't hate the Cheryl Crow song, it beats "Die Another Day" and "Another Way To Die", but after hearing THIS there's just no comparison. Crow has never been my cup of tea as a performer, but she is not without talent. She does her best with the song they gave her, but even that is out of her range. I understand the producers gimmick of going with who's hot on the charts at the time, but this was just a phenomenally bad call.

Even the "Quantum of Solace"-song that came in the PS3 "Quantum of Solace" videogame (for the opening-credits) was better than the turdfest they used in the movie (for the opening credits). Whoever made those cuts and edits really--doesn't-know how to edit a film. David TOLSON she totally does. There are many singers that I love but this lady has a medicinal quality to her voice. Hearing her is medicine to the ears. Flawless.

Ok, poor choice of words for my comment. There have many great Bond theme songs, as you guys have noted, but, there have been some truly awful ones. I would rate Madonna's Die Another day as the worst. Horrible! Also, those by Sam Smith and Aha were awful. Didn't care for the one by Paul McCartney, either. I grew up on Bond and loved the Shirley Bassey vocals with composer,John Barry. Adele's Skyfall kind of had that early Bond feel to it.
This is the most underrated song of David Arnold and also underrated singer KD Lang what an amazing song I am not tired of it listening this masterpiece!
I love Sheryl Crow's song so I don't want this to come off as an insult, but this is so much better in context that it's unreal. At least they put it somewhere. I think it's just a case of using a more popular artist for publicity, same as they did with Radiohead/Sam Smith and Spectre. Smith's take was fine, but Radiohead's was absolutely more fitting.
I actually never heard this version, because I didn't grow up watching Tomorrow never dies all that much. Having me watched it recently on blu-ray, I have to say this song is so much better than the rather lame Sheryl Crow one. They probably only picked the Sheryl Crow version because she was a big singer at the time. But it's just doesn't have the same punch that this song has, and of course using the beautiful heroic Melody throughout. But at least we got the amazing song from garbage in the world is not enough.
KD must have thought “why the hell isn’t my song in the beginning title sequence??!” Wrong decision by producers to have Sheryl crow do the opening song. Crow was popular in late 90’s but THIS song sung by KD Lang is 200% better for the opening scene. I found out by watching the entire movie on cable until the end credits. I’m glad I did
Agree, should've been the intro song. Evokes the best of John Barry and even alludes to the story. It's almost like the Broccolis or someone decided this song was TOO perfect.
I came across this while compiling my James bond soundtracks collection. I absolutely could not believe it. This song is amazing. I must have listened to it 20 times over. There were a couple of good Bond songs that never made the films. And this definitely should have been the lead on this one.
If ever a song should have been the main title, this is it. Sheryl's song was amazing but somehow this just had a sass and swagger to it that really suited the movie. And KD's voice is gorgeous.

They didn't pass on it. Surrender's melodies are though out the film, it was changed last minute.

Blame politics, K.D. Lang was a lezbian and at the time that was unacceptable to many markets. For the film to succeed they had to shut her aside.

Why ever this wasn't the opening theme beats me. It is epic with a great vocal delivery.
I think its name was in fact Tomorrow Never Dies, but Barbara Broccoli wanted Sheryl Crow and they changed the name of this one.

Yes, The Living Daylight by A-ha was great with its catchy tune...It was helping to have it in head for the day of work...So dynamic ! .....And, nearly 15 years ago, I realized that Kd & Morten Harket, were, for me, the Best Vocalists on Earth !! 😊....They should make a Duet !!

Right when the movie ends you get hit with an absolute banger, this is the main song in my opinion, and one of the best Bond themes.
With both an incredible intro and outro song, this probably has my favorite vocals of any bond film

Ok, poor choice of words for my comment. There have many great Bond theme songs, as you guys have noted, but, there have been some truly awful ones. I would rate Madonna's Die Another day as the worst. Horrible! Also, those by Sam Smith and Aha were awful. Didn't care for the one by Paul McCartney, either. I grew up on Bond and loved the Shirley Bassey vocals with composer,John Barry. Adele's Skyfall kind of had that early Bond feel to it.
This is fantastic! Sheryl's song was pretty good but this just fits the movie more and Lang's voice gave me goosebumps.

I love Sheryl Crow's song so I don't want this to come off as an insult, but this is so much better in context that it's unreal. At least they put it somewhere. I think it's just a case of using a more popular artist for publicity, same as they did with Radiohead/Sam Smith and Spectre. Smith's take was fine, but Radiohead's was absolutely more fitting.

I actually never heard this version, because I didn't grow up watching Tomorrow never dies all that much. Having me watched it recently on blu-ray, I have to say this song is so much better than the rather lame Sheryl Crow one. They probably only picked the Sheryl Crow version because she was a big singer at the time. But it's just doesn't have the same punch that this song has, and of course using the beautiful heroic Melody throughout. But at least we got the amazing song from garbage in the world is not enough.
KD must have thought “why the hell isn’t my song in the beginning title sequence??!” Wrong decision by producers to have Sheryl crow do the opening song. Crow was popular in late 90’s but THIS song sung by KD Lang is 200% better for the opening scene. I found out by watching the entire movie on cable until the end credits. I’m glad I did
Agree, should've been the intro song. Evokes the best of John Barry and even alludes to the story. It's almost like the Broccolis or someone decided this song was TOO perfect.
I came across this while compiling my James bond soundtracks collection. I absolutely could not believe it. This song is amazing. I must have listened to it 20 times over. There were a couple of good Bond songs that never made the films. And this definitely should have been the lead on this one.
