    God bless the independent editors of TH-cam for bringing to life the cinematic might-have-beens that got rubbed out by dopey committees at the highest levels of big-money filmmaking. This, for me, is now the official opening sequence for Tomorrow Never Dies. This k.d. lang/David Arnold song is one of the greats.

    Why KD Langs song didn't get the intro here is inexplicable - it's a million times better than Sheryl Crow; in fact, she's almost like Shirley Bassey in her delivery & power - a proper Bond theme tune

    A perfect Bond-song has to have certain ingredience.
    It has to:
    * Have an classic orchestra backing up with brass and trumpets
    * Be BOMBASTIC!
    * Have a singer with a POWERFUL voice
    * Have the classic Bond-theme integrated in the song
    and this song has all of these ingredience! It's FANTASTIC!

    This is what the main title should have been. Sheryl Crow is good, but she was owned by K.D. Lang. This song was the very definition of a classic Bond song.

    • @ohroonoko

      Lyrically speaking, Sheryl Crow’s song is a beautiful tragedy, like No Time to Die. This kd lang song is like a Disney song written in the same vein as “You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch.”
      Surrender is a song about the villain, Elliot Carver. There have only been two Bond themes written about the villain: Goldfinger, and the Man with the Golden Gun. What’s worse about Surrender is it’s written in first person. This is Elliot Carver singing. That’s appropriate for a James Bond musical, maybe, but not a James Bond opening credit theme song.
      Every other Bond theme is about James Bond (ex: Thunderball, License to Kill, You Know My Name (Casino Royale)), or written purely as a love song (Nobody Does it Better, For Your Eyes Only, All Time High, etc.).
      Sheryl Crow’s song is a tragedy written from the point of view of Bond’s ex-lover, Paris Carver, pining over her love of James Bond. It’s based on the hotel scenes we have with her and James Bond. Sheryl Crow’s song is a MUCH MORE prototypical James Bond theme song, and more emotionally resonant.
      In the first stanza, she’s dead, murdered in James’ hotel room.
      >Darling I'm killed
      >I'm in a puddle on the floor
      >Waiting for you to return
      In the 2nd stanza, Paris laments James Bond’s life as a spy.
      >Darling, you won
      >It's no fun
      >Martinis, girls, and guns
      >It's murder on our love affair
      That line, “it’s murder on our love affair” is a paraphrase from her dialogue in the film. It’s the last thing Paris says to James Bond before she dies. ((Actual dialogue: This job of yours... it’s murder on relationships.”)).
      Musically, it’s debatable which one sounds better. I might agree that kd Lang’s music works better in the opening credits than Sheryl Crow’s song. But certainly not lyrically, and not overall. Musically, I’d rather listen to Sheryl Crow’s song in the car or in my workout. It’s a catchier tune. kd lang’s song is lyrically like a Disney song or a show tune. I like the song, but I could only enjoy it watching the end credits of Tomorrow Never Dies.

    A million times better than the Crow Song. This song was co-written by David Arnold and he used different instrumentation versions of it during the whole film. The main reason the great John Barry quit the series was because he wanted to co- compose the music of the title song. But many song writers and singers were beginning to object to that and wanted complete control. The Crow song is a perfect example of what happens when you select an artist based on popularity and give them complete control. The KD Lang song is a perfect example of what happens when you select an artist on the basis of their voice and song fitting the movie and having the composer co write it. David Arnold basically did what John Barry would have done if he had been in charge. And the results are Sublime.Its mind blowing how this song was bumped to the end credits.

    • @xvxThexShadowxvx
      @xvxThexShadowxvx 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Same thing happened with Shirley Bassey and Quantum of Solace. Her song "No Good About Goodbye" she obviously worked with David Arnold to make it cause it uses the underlining theme from the movie. I'm pretty sure that the reason you stated above about John Barry leaving is the same reason Arnold did too if I'm not mistaken.

    • @psartana4398
      @psartana4398 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Well the main reason why David Arnold was not involved in the last 2 Bond films is because Sam Mendes the director of both films likes to work with composer Thomas Newman regularly, so it was at his request that he composed the films. Now with Mendes gone, we may very well see Arnold back again whom I believe has been the best for the job since the great John Barry.

    • @xvxThexShadowxvx

      I could have swore I read somewhere that he left for that same reason. Maybe it was something else I read and am getting them confused. I do agree that he has been the best since Barry. Although not gonna lie I do like Goldeneye's score by Eric Serra. I think cause it's different and that's why I like it

    • @psartana4398
      @psartana4398 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sorry but I hated the Goldeneye soundtrack. Serra did not even implement the James Bond theme in any of the film and was overruled, when the Studio and the producers brought in another composer to re-do the Tank chase scene to include the Bond theme. And the song he composed and sang for the ending credits is the absolute worst song in the entire series. Thank god he was never invited back.

Crow's version was recorded just days before print after an exec thought Lang's was too "Bondy" and they were trying to get younger people who weren't classic Bond fans to watch. Lang didn't find out she'd been bumped until she saw it. She was still payed every dime.

    Pains me that this isn't the MAIN theme of the movie. Crow's feels like an ending theme, where as this feels way way more like an opening theme to keep you excited for the other awesome music ahead. If this was the main theme, I would have it in my top 3 easily. But as it stands with Crow's version, it's only ranked at #19. I think Crow's version is OK. But nothing compared to Lang's surrender. This easily would've been the best Brosnan bond theme, and one of the best themes period. But sadly, we have Crow's, and it just doesn't really do justice. A real shame. Because I love this film

    You're not alone. A lot of critics wondered the same thing. From what I understand, David Arnold, the film's composer had written the original song, "Tomorrow Never Dies", and produced it with k.d. Lang's vocals, and it was supposed to be the official song for the movie. Then, Sheryl Crow came into the picture, wrote HER version, and THAT was used instead! I don't know if it's ever been established what fool at Eon Productions made that decision (My guess? Michael G. Wilson, the producer).

  • @RaytheMagician

    What's irksome, is that, as you say, this song relates so much better to the film's story and the soundtrack as a whole. And overlaid on the opening credits, it totally works. Pity, such a sadly missed opportunity. It makes me glad that when I first saw the movie in theaters back in 1997, that I sat through the end credits and was treated to this song for the first time!

Makes me want to edit by DVD and slap this version on for the title sequence. Too many of the Bond films went with the wrong choice. Shirley Bassey should have done Quantum of Solace theme. I'd have no problem with bringing Adele back for the next film as I thought she was perfect for Skyfall. Dionne Warwick would have worked for Thunderball too.

  • @PromusKaa
    @PromusKaa 9 ปีที่แล้ว +32

    Thanks for doing this! The melody of "Surrender" was even incorporated into the rest of the film's score by David Arnold, the composer - leading me to think that they ditched Lang's song for Crow's pretty late in post-production.

    • @lazenbear
      @lazenbear 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +PromusKaa David Arnold wrote this song for the movie. The studio thought that k.d. lang wasn't a big enough name to launch the title song so a couple of months before the movie David Arnold and Sheryl Crow wrote a new theme song and David Arnold didn't have time or money to rescore. Hence the soundtrack has the same thematic elements as Surrender but Tomorrow Never Dies doesn't share any musical similarity.

    Surrender : Tomorrow Never Dies - K.D.Lang
    Your life is a story
    I`ve already written
    The news is that I am in control
    And I have the power
    To make you surrender
    Not only your body but your soul
    Tomorrow never dies, surrender
    Tomorrow will arrive on time
    I`ll tease and tantalize with every line
    Till you are mine
    Tomorrow never dies
    Whatever you`re after
    Trust me, I`ll deliver
    You`ll relish the world that I create
    Tomorrow never dies, surrender
    Tomorrow will arrive on time
    I`ll tease and tantalize with every line
    Till you are mine
    Tomorrow never dies
    The truth is now what I say
    I`ve taken care of yesterday
    Tomorrow never dies, surrender
    Tomorrow will arrive on time
    I`ll tease and tantalize with every line
    Till you are mine
    Tomorrow never dies
    Tomorrow never dies
    Tomorrow never dies

    One of the biggest mistakes in the Bond Franchise was relegating this gem to end credits. If they reissued a director's cut of TND I'd get it just this to be the title sequence song. The Sheryl Crow title sequence was just as bad as Lulu's " the man with the golden gun.

    The intro of Tomorrow Never Dies has introduced many of us to the cutting edge of Technocrat which has been greatly manipulated by what we perceive as "media". I found it most fascinating for the era of Pierce bond. The intro song was quite augmented in term of technicolor, mood and tone, and the most important thing, the sense of modern time.

    I love the Sheryl Crow song. Because Tomorrow Never Dies by Crow is not a bad song at all and I think had she be given more time, she could have done something even better. But even I have to admit that K.D. Lang's Surrender just sounds and fits the feel a Bond movie. Its just a better song. And even the instrumentation of the song can be heard in the score by David Arnold.
