I'm a new subscriber and I'm loving your honest and positive outlook on life. I've worked with range of children in the past, some who were non-verbal and some who had communication and behaviour issues. Through your vlogs, I'm learning a lot about how to better understand and work with children who are on the autistic spectrum/have communication problems etc. And I'd just like to say thank you for being so inspirational and honest about what life is like raising an autistic child ❤️
Hanna you're an inspiration :) people like you are needed so much in the world. My uncle is ~55 with a lifelong disability, and had he gotten adequate therapy in communication and coping skills during his childhood, his life might've looked very different. He spent his adult years in group homes and such (in the Netherlands) until he moved in with us (my parents being the primary caregivers) in 2011. Since moving in and getting real one-on-one assistance and support, he's able to cope much better and is almost never aggressive anymore. He talks MUCH more (he speaks maybe 20 words, and pronounces them very simplified, so it can be hard to understand without context) and even at his age still learns new words sometimes. He's settled in a routine where he goes to visit people (other caregivers) every weekday and do something fun, gets little gifts like toys and CD's all the time (because he's cognitively a 2 year old, he gets SO excited every time) and simply gets to go home to a stress free environment, his own upstairs apartment. Seeing this huge difference in him just goes to see the potential disabled people have, and how important it is to allow them to cultivate their abilities. Because it also speaks to their sense of self esteem. It's sadly far too easy for these kids to be forgotten in the system where they don't get what they need, and it breaks my heart. Sorry for the wall of text, but just thank you for being so passionate!

As an adult who has Aspergers, I just came across your channel. I was non-verbal just like Abby as a young child, but after years worth of speech therapy, I am able to speak with fluency, except I have a lisp and some pronunciation errors. I also flap my hands like she does whenever I get excited, except it's not as pronounced as it used to be when I was younger.
Saylor Wollan Out of curiosity, why were you diagnosed with Asperger's if you were non-verbal? As far as I'm aware the biggest distinction when Asperger's was a diagnosis was the lack of speech delay
Al Funcoot Because my speech delay was not entirely non-verbal. I couldn't say complete sentences or words correctly until I was six; yet, I could still say words to an extent. My intelligence is also considered of the above average range, which is also a distinction in Aspergers. I never had to be institutionalized or dragged out of mainstream classrooms for my autism. I also got accepted into one of the most competitive schools in my state. Maybe it may seem like HFA (high-functioning autism), which is like Aspergers, but with speech delay. But remember, I was not as non-verbal as to only hum and scream. I just wasn't able to say complete sentences until I was six, and doctors classified me as having a speech delay.

I agree Asa, that’s saddest part of about having a kiddo or older adult that’s non-verbal is the times they’re upset and you don’t know why. As a nurse, I go to hot/cold, hungry, wet or pain.

Your video came up as a suggestion and I think it was because I've been watching back to school videos and I watch momsvlog80 and they've been doing more videos focusing on their other son who also has autism. I just feel in love with your family. You guys are excellent parents. You work as a team to give your kids the best.
Abigail is so pretty and I love how guys are trying to do whatever it takes to make her happy. I love that Summer is Abby's best friend and likes Abby for her personality. I work at a daycare and we had two kids who is on the spectrum and it's hard on the parents and can be hard on the care givers because others don't get it, but you know that the kids wants and needs. Currently at the daycare we have a kid there that has Serable palsy and was born micro-preemie and we get starts from other daycares wondering why she needs to held and why she needs to spoon feed or whatever. But if you aren't helping the kid or watching her or being her friend you don't know what will make the kid happy. You guys are great and Summer is amazing. Have you ever consider getting a PCA for Abigail, in currently trying to become one for the little girl at the daycare. Those PCAS form a type of bond with the kids that no one understands.
Even if she was verbal, the communication barrier would still be a huge challenge. I am 16 and high functioning, but I am currently lying on my bedroom floor after having a meltdown because my dad was making noises that I didn't like. I couldn't tell him that I was upset, so I exploded and threw my ice cream across the living room floor. Even though I can physically speak, I still struggle to communicate so much that I can't cope sometimes.
This world needs more people like Summer.
