  • In this video, guest Bob Osborne explains the difference between varieties and cultivars. Bob is the author of “HARDY ROSES: THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE FOR HIGH LATITUDES AND ALTITUDES, and president at Corn Hill Nursery Ltd. in New Brunswick, Canada. His book is one of the most thorough treatments that I think you might be able to find on growing and maintaining roses, and it also offers an exhaustive list a description of a wide range of hardy roses - essential reading for rose lovers in cold climates.

The Seeds of a variety, give you a variety of genetics, but you cultivate the identical genetics of a cultivar... the number of times I have repeated this to myself before I talk about plants...

Do any website sell cultivar cuttings?

I think they typically sell whips - that's cutting grafted to root stock and grown for about a year.

If a scion is taken from an old tree, will the air iayered / grafted new tree suffer from “early” old age it will it be like resetting its age back to the age of the branch ?

All the Macintosh apples in the world are from one original tree that has been perpetually re-grafted to root stock since John McIntosh discovered the original McIntosh in 1811. So yes - it becomes young again :)
