Before it went out of business, went X-mas shopping at Carson, Pirie Scott, spent a couple of hundred dollars. Next morning (opened around 10 am, store was basically empty of customers), before I had to be at work, went back to buy one more gift, and noticed I was being followed around the store, immediately turned around and walked out. It’s crazy because I’ve had this experience with both black white and other races. Following me around and I’m like dam “brother” you’re really treating me like I’m a criminal and you’re black yourself. It was such a shame and it messes with me but I can’t change who I am. Wonder how he died?
What???!!! My condolences to his wife and children. My brother, Blanton Holley didn’t write a book, but he passed away in 2012 also
He certainly made his mark, may he rest in peace
Unbelievable that racism is worse in 2023.
I am a black midwife who for 5 years I am fighting accusations regarding the death of a baby I did not cause. I need legal fees. I have none. God please help me. Please pray for me.

How are things ❤❤❤❤...??
We black people live every day being black since birth and are hella strong. We make the best out of life and function. Joshua only could emotionally do this for two days and then he gave up.
5 days...
Im glad i live in the caribbean we dont have to go through racism on a daily basis
@@pinkrose372please tell me what part of the Caribbean you’re in that you don’t have to deal with racism?
@@BLACKCREEKSOFALABAMA I want to know too!
@MsIntense6845 But we are a special people.
The lawyer is gifted with articulation. It’s not easy for many to talk that sharply. Good thing he was able to pursue law instead of some other profession where his gifts wouldn’t shine.
Yeah and I'm glad he wasn't afraid to show his anger even if that's how racist people want black people to come off
Thank you so much for posting this. Whenever I refer to this episode, most people don't remember it. I wonder where is he now🤔
He has passed on

@godisgracious6226 the young man who was black for a week?
I really love the repeated phrase Oprah uses: "What does it do to your psyche". Having your entire existence being valued as less, the guy was honest enough that after 1 week he did not see the point.
Got home that evening, gathered up every item purchased the day before, including receipts, and, next day returned it ALL. Never went into that department store again.
Good for you.
You did too much..maybe they wanted to help you choose gifts, 😂
@@amgooder🤣🤣 I think not
Back when the Oprah show was good!
This show originally aired in 1995, NOT 2012!!!
That British dude talking at the end is WRONG! In the UK, racism and classism runs DEEP. I sure would like to hear from him today!
Yes, he needed to give more specific examples when comparing the two countries
Is it like American racism
Would he still say the same thing if he wasn't with his wife?
I'm watching this crying. Had no idea it was such an everyday thing
Every single day
@@ZoraNealesStudent I'm so sorry
@7:33 - The mere fact that his mom was worried for his life means that she knows that it's more dangerous to be a black man. If it's really not as dangerous to be black as they try to gaslight us into believing, then she wouldn't be scared for her son at all.
Narcissist have to gaslight to survive and oppress others
Now I thought I saw all episodes..but this was amazing.
Oprah it’s time to do this again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm sure things would be QUITE different. Agreed!!
I agree. With the advances in technology and make up you could walk into a skinhead/klan/mason meeting and really become the fly on the wall. FACTS!
@@martijobarrett4527Right! It’s worse today… there’s more aggression towards non-whites. E.g. White people seemed shocked to see what happened to George Floyd …..Nobody black was shocked.
@@martijobarrett4527 I seriously doubt it! What has changed? Racism has come out the closest again, when Obama was elected President and when trump took over white people really felt compelled to show their racist thoughts!!
You really are phenomenal Oprah.we need this awakening discussion NOW!
Just maddening still in 2024!
This is all so true. I’ve gone through it all my life. Followed and watched. You have to psych yourself out to not crack.
What an interesting guy, you are Josh.
18:18 "Try to remain calm. - What was the threat?"
Oprah says - gotta change that nose! I am a white woman, Polish/Italian & my nose is shaped like a black person . I am proud of my nose! 💕
Nothing has changed in 2023
Yes it has
As a white woman, I honestly did not know that this kind of racism was going on and the detrement it has caused. I have always believed that black people just used their complaints as racist unjustifiably. I admit to fearing black men, not women but, I have tried to treat all people with love. I sincerely apologize for our ignorance and now that I really understand and appreciate how you're treated and feel, I will go out of my way to make you feel equal and valued in every sense of the word. 😢❤
THANKS FOR YOUR HONESTY NANCY🙂 BUT WE WERE TOLD THAT GOD GOT THE WHOLE WORLD IN HIS HAND😲🤔
Hey Nancy, you are somewhat a breath of fresh air. Lol you don’t have to go out of your way because of your thoughts. Given the fact that your thoughts where a taught and learned behavior all you need do is change them. We don’t need you to roll out the red carpet we are just saying we want to be treated like people. Give the same grace as you would to anyone until they treat different with you. Your a sweet heart so just be that and that’s a great start to an amazing finish😉
@@ILikeitLikeDat3983 Will do. Thank you. 😊
@@INFORMATIVESITUATIONS You're absolutely right. Thank you.
Some blacks are great especially in some parts of Africa. But in America they portray gabgsterism much of the time please don't get yourself in any danger it's not worth it.
Talk shows wouldn’t accept this kind of experiment today, and it’s very shameful that racism is still going on.
What a beautiful young man ….
to walk in another’s footsteps
the truth unfolds !
Same in Iowa and Minnesota 😢 Oprah is frustrating me in this episode, she won't let Josh answer.
Black Like Me was an excellent book.
And im african. This would be new in my country. It saddens me
It’s crazy that we’re walking into 2024 in a week and a half and this is still very accurate for today. Smh.
How is it crazy? When it was already prophesied that black people would be hated by all nations.. because they are Gods chosen people.
Thank you for posting the full episode!!!
the girls are still pumping their lips trying to get the look lmao
Exactly
They want to look like us but don't want to live like us
@@van5135, they want plump lips, not to be another race. Many confuse the two.

Love this episode ! Again, this when someone ( Corporate America) set down and talk to oprah about her shows ! She had to change it, they didn't want the awareness to celebrated over national television! More than likely they told her that she could talk about anything else, but don't show the word how we treat African American men, period ..... give away card are something !
Love this full episodes keep them coming!!!!
Yeah!
The Oprah Winfrey Show was top notch tv💯🎯
Now the meaning of"walk in my shoes" has a general overview or perspective of one another in learning and educating each other back then.
It's nice that she greeted her audience at the end of the show. We visited the view last year. We got to speak to Sunny at the end of the show but most were headed back stage.
I was in the Oprah audience in 1992 and she greeted every one of us personally after tye show. Shook everybody's hand & asked how they were.

You couldn't pay me to sit through a taping of The View...!!
@@tamipierce5916what does the view have to do with Ophra???
Oh God you're one of those 🤦
There was a profound message conveyed that was more about general human behavior than just about racism!
The young black man turned white casually walking into a building elevator as a white man and NOT being stopped by the security guy, yet when he came back as himself (A black man) the guard IMMEDIATELY stopped him!
However, in BOTH INSTANCES the security man was the SAME MAN and he ALSO was black!!!!!!
I remember watching this when it originally aired back then.
I never saw this episode ! This is so deep.
Doing the math, this originally aired in 1995. The description says it originally aired in 2012.
This makes much more sense
0:46. This episode alone is iconic✨. 39:41 😢. What actual year was this show aired? OWN?
1995
Would've loved for him to go walk a country road in AL, MISS, LA, and Texas
Original air date is not 2012. More like 1995.
Noticed where it said the original airdate was in 2012, this was actually from 1995.
I'm in awe I'm warchinf this in 2024.
Baltimore and DC is very much the South…so, I’m not shocked that he ran into racism in those areas.
Where are they now??
It’s 2024 and nothing has changed
Josh is very smart and reflective.
Obviously this episode wouldn't be able to air today! But I love Oprah...my aunt still wears her hair like her! 💈
Why not?
I think it's true what the Bible writes about how we believe who we are is how it mirrors across to others.
Psalms say you are what you believe think in your hearts you are.
Nikki Haley needs to see this. It pains me to see how loving and warm most black people are toward whites in an effort to show their humanity. I went to the MLK Parade in LA and few times have I felt so welcome. These were ordinary family people. So charming and charasmatic. One of my closest friends is black. I love him like a brother.
I'M A BLACKMAN TRYING TO GET BLACKER! BECAUSE, BEING BLACK WITH JET BLACK SKIN IS REALLY A BLESSING! THE ORIGINAL IMAGERY OF THE ORIGINAL HOLY MADONNA AND HER HOLY CHILD HAD JET BLACK SKIN! PERIOD!
16:05 the security guard was black.😮😮 wow
Black cops are worse than white to fellow blacks. The black cops feel they have to prove they fit in.

This is gut wrenching for me. One of my closest friends is black. When I think of somebody mistreating him I get that awful feeling of outrage I had when my daughter was a little girl and she was bullied in school.
Read the book Black Like Me
Miss her on TV❤❤❤
Racism makes me want to avoid giving people the power of "no" over me. Which is why I try to learn as much as I can about everything. My reasoning: the more I know, the less I have to ask. The less I have to ask, the less chance I will hear "no".
Rest in Peace Lawrence Otis Graham
Reminds me of the movie “white chicks”😀
No it doesn’t
It’s crazy because I’ve had this experience with both black white and other races. Following me around and I’m like dam “brother” you’re really treating me like I’m a criminal and you’re black yourself. It was such a shame and it messes with me but I can’t change who I am. I’m black it is what it is. I will always hold my head high even when faced with that type of discrimination for no reason at all.
