      As far as i remember they're 10cm apart. Don't know if they're adjustable though.

      Taking cylinders of sediment out of the ground to study the layers. Like those apple corers you can get, just a big old tube that pulls chunks out.
      They're used in environmental sciences both modern and archaeological. You can see what the weather and climate was like by looking at the layers :)
