Danchee Ridgerock stripped gear fix / repair / rebuild

  • We were running the Danchee Ridgerock pretty hard, and for an entry level crawler, it's been amazing!
    We got it in a bind and it finally gave out. The pinion gear went out and all we could hear while driving it was a lout clicking sound. One motor worked, and the was stripping out the gears. So lets fix stripped gears on our crawler!
    The best entry level rock crawler? The Danchee Ridgerock is a 1/10 scale 4x4 rock crawler that can outclimb more expensive crawlers. With front & rear multi-link suspension, front and rear high-torque electric brushed motors, and 4 types of 4 wheel steering. Front steer, front and rear steering, crab steer, and rear steer. Slow enough for beginners to drive, agile enough for experts to enjoy on any hill climb. It is tough enough to beat the Traxxas TRX4, the Axial SCX10, Axial Capra, or the Redcat Gen8 Scout? Time will tell, but this is distributed by Redcat, and I think it's got a place in any RC Crawler collection.

    Great video, I bought a used one and it had upgraded servos. Worked great till I got in a bind and applied too much throttle. Bent a front drive pin and when I straightened it out and put it back together I heard the clicking sound that usualy means stripped gears. I found this video and went in expecting to find a worn pinion but found broken plastic gears, the pinion was not worn at all. I guess you never know for sure. I ordered steel gears from Redcat and extra pinions.

    Absolutely essential video man thank you very much for making this. As of yet I have not had any problems with mine but I appreciate this being here if and when I do. That being said I believe the problem stems from the added weight from the BB's in the wheels. I had the same problem in my Arrma Granite. It surprised me that the nylon spur gear was more resilient than the metal pinion.

      Some may not understand when to let off the power when tires are pinched in a wedge. When in doubt, power out isn’t always the answer. Glad to help. A heavy Crawler certainly adds stress to the system. Have fun!

  • @pancakepalacinosa2730
    @pancakepalacinosa2730 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It’s likely to wear out because the pinion gear being so small only has a small contact area to engage the drive gear. Only 1 or 2 teeth can engage. Same thing can happen when you put really deep gears on full size rigs.

    Well, for $170 with features, its a killer rig.
    The motors are 380s, not 540. Theres plenty of companies that make high torque crawler motors in the 380 size including Holmes-Hobbies with there Crawlmaster 380 & TorqueMaster 380 for $17 each.
    As for the servo savers, check the little plastic bag that comes with the rig, it has strong, braced-up but olastic solid seevo arms if you want to swap them out.
    Keep the wheels light & go to a 4.19 to a 4.50 tire and youll have more torque to the ground.

Guess I'll order a couple pinions now, before I open it up. Good vid tho! saved me a bit of hassle. Have you found any other metal parts that will fit as upgrades while it's apart?

    Thank you very much for the contribution! How about the quality of the danchee's stock electronics? are redcat batteries and chargers durable? can we put another variator? will we have complications to do it? how big are the motors? in case of failure of the receiver or transmitter ... can we replace it with other brands?

    • @bobt219
      @bobt219 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zoridor16, I don't have a Danchee yet (coming in the mail), but I have been in RC stuff for many years. The batteries for this truck are Li-Ion 18650 cells, and it is charged with a USB chord. You can use a 2S Lipo and dedicated charger instead. As for the variator, I assume you mean the device that controls the motors. This is called a Electronic Speed Controller or ESC for short. I believe it is built in to the receiver for this truck. However you CAN use a different radio/transmitter and ESC. Just make sure the ESC is for BRUSHED motors and 2 or 3S, (the S stands for "cells"). I plan on using an aircraft type radio so I can easily control front and rear steering.

    • @robdude1969
      @robdude1969  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      it's more complicated than a traditional car with the 4 wheel steering. but with a fancy radio, it is doable...

    I have one and I want to know how to do regular maintenance. Is there a hole to put lubricant in the motor without any disassembly and should I do that and what should I use? Is the gear box sealed? If not how do I put grease in there to keep it lubricated? Thank you so much to anyone with any first-hand experience you can share!

    • @robdude1969

      gearbox is sealed, motor is not... there are electronics sprays that may be helpful for you. be sure it is safe with plastics.

      Low battery gives little power to the servos. Run with a big 5000mah 2s lipo for hours of fun. Also if your servos bind while sitting in place roll a little and they should turn better.

      I changed the connector on the car to a better plug that matches the new batteries. If you have other rc batteries with deans style plugs or xt60 plugs, I would suggest them. Just be sure you can charge them as well. Soldering iron required.
