This took WAY TOO LONG, but I hope you guys dig it I ranked 50 artists I previously haven't been able to get into just to see if my opinions have changed. What's an artist/band you WANT to get into, but can't?! Drop a like/comment your answer 😈 EDIT: A clip of The Used played for As It Is, pretend I did that to spare you from "I Miss 2003"
ARTV……can you even play an instrument or carry a tune? Have you actually been in a recording studio? I’m not even a Radke fan and didn’t even know about his band until recently…..but I can clearly see he has more talent in his pen*s than you will ever have. Are you just trying to fit in with the fraudulent woke cancel-culture crowd? If so…I hope you realize that those who aren’t already laughing at that crowd will be eventually…cause it’s a weak, fraudulent crowd. You brag about “living in a 2,400 sq ft house” and your wife having a “killer career.” Bro…living off your wife’s career is NOT something to brag about. Being a woke mobster is NOT something to be proud of and time will prove this to be fact. You talk about “human decency” as if you are morally superior to others…yet your career is built on trying to tear down people far more driven, talented & successful than you. Classic B.E.T.A. If Ronnie lost his GF, he would have the pick of the litter of attractive women to choose from to share his time with. You? Well…not so much. You ride on the coattails of successful musicians. Without them you would still be living in your wife’s basement. Working minimum wage in a fast food restaurant commands FAR more respect than your sorry career. You trash his music as if you could create something 1/100th of the caliber he puts out…and I’m not even a fan of his band. You belong in the same category as msnbc “journalists” or clueless ESPN reporters. No talent, no skills…only harsh criticism of people that actually have those qualities. Being envious is not virtuous. Berating artists as if you are the final decision maker on what makes art good (btw it’s totally subjective)…and as if your opinion matters (it doesn’t) is a completely morally bankrupt thing to do. You are a l.o.s.e.r putting out complete trash to the rest of the world. Weak, woke keyboard warrior is all you are…one again…not something to be proud of.
I do enjoy some of the artists on the list, but hey, that just shows that everyone has different opinions on artists we like and don’t like, and I respect that.
I could’ve sworn you liked Charli XCX and Metallica. Some of the others make sense because I remember you either talking about not liking them before or just knowing your taste it makes sense but those two are ones that stuck out to me.
I do like them, just fine for both! Didn’t mean for that to be taken as a negative tier or anything, it’s more of just a “I love or like a lot of their songs, not so much full albums”
circa survive are one of those groups where you either get it or you don't. I've shown them off to people who fell in love, and some people who wouldn't mind never hearing Green's vocals ever again. one of my personal favorites. great vid as always! love this long-form content
Animal Collective fan here, alot of AnCo fans will give long-winded paragraphs explaining why they love the band so much, but I love the band for just one major reason, its just fun music. They definitely aren't a happy band by any means and they definitely have some oddball instrumentation but whenever I listen to the band (especially the run from Sung Tongs up to Centipede Hz), I'm just soaked in warm vibes and colourful atmospheres. Welp, I guess I just gave a long-winded paragraph there now lmao
From the way you talked about all the artists on this list, I’m sure you listened to a lot of music from all the artists, but I’d love to hear your opinions on the first 2 Glass Animals records, Zaba and How to Be a Human Being. Especially with their newest album out, there seems to be a divide in the fanbase of old fans who adore those albums but don’t like the new stuff and newer fans who love their pop leaning stuff of the past two records. I personally love How to Be a Human Being, it’s one of my favorite albums of all time for its story telling and its mix of indie rock and hip hop beats. Also, I get how “you have to see it live!” isn’t a valid argument as concerts aren’t as accessible as albums, but I will say it is fascinating to see them perform stuff from all 4 albums at their concerts and find a way to make the setlist fit together when each album is so different.
One band I can’t get into that you didn’t mention was Ice Nine Kills. Anytime someone mentions them, I ask them to show me some songs to get into them and all anyone says is “see them live”. I finally brought it up and one of my friends gave me one of their cds because he had an extra copy and that cd went in one ear and right out the other
@@gcolbyp and I’m not the type to go see someone live if I don’t like their music unless they’re on the bill with someone else who’s music I actually do like
@@SuperDmathThat’s like the equivalent of someone telling me to watch movie again because I apparently didn’t get it, when I clearly did and it just didn’t connect with me.
Everything pre 2015 is awful and if you're not particular into their style chances are you won't like the newer stuff. Although I'm in the weird minority who loves their recent stuff but hates bands like BVB and motionless in white so 🤷♂️
I'm a diehard Starset fan, I understand if you can't get into them. They're one of the few bands from highschool that I still love. Saw them live last month and it was one of the coolest shows aesthetically I've seen. Even if you don't like them, I would give them credit for managing to blend a mainstream rock appeal with EDM electronics, djent guitar tuning with a strong pop sensibility before that style really blew up a few years ago. They were definitely ahead of the curve there.
They really were OG in that poppy djent style. I bet they were great live, I'm curious what the best song of the set was. I'm excited for the new album!
Been a Starset fan since Transmissions and I can’t get my head around the idea that they haven’t changed over time. Anyone who thinks that is not paying attention, IMO.
When you said you didn't like the gravely voiced vocal style a'la Springsteen and you listed a bunch of similar artists, I was shocked you didn't add Gaslight Anthem here. I am interested in your opinion on them, since they also share a similar vocal style?
"It would be a low hanging fruit to just write off BVB because they're cheesy, and cringe, and have a sexy front man" Proceeds to write off Motionless In White for those exact reasons.
I don't get the hype for Buddy Holly (not the Weezer song, that one's a banger). My dad plays his music in the car quite often, and when I give his songs a shot, I don't like them. His music makes me think of Chip and Skip from Camp Lazlo. It sounds like music to scoop the pig enclosure to. The song Listen To Me is the biggest example of what I'm thinking of. Buddy's vocal delivery is just NOT it. I'd put him in "Utter Confusion", since I don't get how he became this highly regarded.
It's not so much his music as what he pioneered in the two plus years he was around. (yes, he was only around for less than three years) He wrote his own lyrics, music, engineered, and arranged it as well. When he was signed to a label that was the one thing he had control over and would not budge. Rock was so new and all the labels wanted any act as long as they would do the music they wanted, in the way they wanted. This is why the Beatles and the Stones were so influenced by him. They made music their way as well and you can see what they started back in the early 60's. Yes it's simple for the most part and recordings back then were not all that great, (stereo recordings were years off at this point) but he made the most of what he could get and they had.
I had heard what sounded like a Ritchie Valens demo version of La Bamba recently and I'd put those two in the same position - I respect what both are as pioneers in such a limited time they were on this earth but not really stuff to play over and over.
I like his music a lot but I definitely have to be in the mood for oldies music to listen to him. He was very young and one of the first "rock 'n' roll stars." I feel like his music was also very ahead of its time and that's why he was so highly respected.
Dude you won’t believe how happy I was to have seen that you’re getting into the national , I’ve grown up with them. I’m 21 and they ‘re like my third favorite band. I have a vinyl collection and I want to get all of their records . Again very happy to see you getting into them 😃😃
No hate whatsoever cause we all like what we like, but I am a huge lana del rey fan myself and I’m curious on your takes on her later work. Especially the more sentimental songs, like the grants. The grants for instance is about taking on cherished memories of your loved ones to heaven with you when you die. She does occasionally bring back the nostalgiac but bad girl aesthetic sometimes but way less than her older career. I think her lyrics have really improved over the years but also your take is 100% valid! Curious to hear your thoughts on more recent releases like “did you know there’s a tunnel…” and NFR! :) Much love, excited for a new artv vid as always
I remember John reviewed NFR! when it came out and was quite positive about this particular album. But after Chemtrails he stopped noticing her records. As a Lana fan myself, I kinda understand why critics are usually not impressed by her albums. I think she's not an album artist, the only album I can listen to from start to finish is Born to Die 😂 But the more I hear one particular song of her over and over the more I appreciate it. Like Blue Banisters which is a genius song if you ask me but it's hard to get it instantly. Some singers songwriters just not for everyone, period.
I was never a fan of Lana until I started to listen and discovered a deeper message hidden in her "evocative and sad 50s housewife style". She's the real deal. Have fun at the Lana Del Rey Hate Train Hill.
I agree with the heavy majority of the bands you've listed so far, some of these artists have always just annoyed me lol. anyway, I almost died when I saw Death Grips, and it was INCREDIBLE. Great records as well, I'll disagree with that one.
dont mind most of yout takes jon agree with most! Not the biggest smiths fan only really know "the queen in dead" that being said that album is a masterpiece, up there with the cure's disintegration!!! Definitely give that one a second chance!
I really liked this collection. I found some bands I had dismissed previously and will check them out again to see if they’ve grown on me or not. There were even a few I’d never heard of before, so I’ll have to become acquainted with their music as well to see if I might be a fan. Of course there are a few artists you clearly don’t like that I love, but that’s okay too. We all have different reasons for listening to music, and we all have different life experiences that color our musical needs, but ultimately I can appreciate anyone who loves a wide range of music. Even within styles l hate I can usually find an artist or a song at minimum that I enjoy.
You do a great job of explaining your opinions in the video! The Smiths, Dashboard Confessional and Dave Matthew’s were probably the only 3 artists that I love on here. I’ve personally never been able to get into All Time Low. Missing You is a great ballad and they have some bangers but I put them more in the Simple Plan category of “pop punk” The guitars aren’t nearly heavy enough and the tempos never get that high.
Loved this! Entertaining watch. It's a topic that I bet every music lover knows very well. Appreciate your honesty and down to earth vibe in these kinds of videos a lot. Makes me as a viewer feel like we are on a similar page and that it's completely normal struggling to get into stuff, or to just find it unlistenable altogether. I found that sometimes it's just a matter of in which phase in life you are and start to click with stuff you never understood
Damn the spicy takes 🌶! But in all seriousness, even though there’s some like Beyoncé, The Smiths, and Bruce Springsteen where I’m the complete opposite, I do see why they may not be your cup of tea. Hell some of these artists I also couldn’t get into like U2, Death Grips and Charli XCX. For me the 2 bands I could never get into are Panic! at the Disco and Vampire Weekend. To me Panic sounds like that annoying theater kid that brags about how talented they are, but you wanna punch them in the face (Though admittedly Pretty. Odd. got some good songs) and Vampire Weekend, basically Crash and Mark from Spectrum Pulse pretty much said my thoughts on the recent Rock Coliseum, they come off as a bit too snobbish for my liking and it gets eye-roll worthy for me. And I listen to that new album cause people were praising it to high heaven and I was mostly whatever on it.
I sometimes do listen to Set It Off and enjoy it, but man the cringe factor is so real. It's baked into almost every aspect of their music in a way that's always given me very edgy scene kid "hehe welcome to my TWISTED mind 😈🔪⛓️🥀" and they're so lacking any of the subtleties or charisma or sincerity that their predecessors (like FOB) have
I feel like people expect something different than what they get from Set it Off. Yes, they do have parts of being edgy pop punk (Cinematics), but most of the time it's more on the pop side of pop punk, which can be a turn off for some people. I frankly love them but I can see them being divisive.
Thank you for making this! For the last couple years I've been trying to remember what the name of this band was that I had an album for like over a decade ago, but for the life of me could not figure it out. But now, finally, you've brought it back: Circa Survive! Thank you!
Hey that’s ok! To each their own ya know? It took me awhile to get into Bowie, come back to his music later down the road in your life and see if your mind changes
@@artvjonStation to Station, Low (probably the first ever post-rock album), Heroes, Lodger and Scary Monsters. That 5-album run should be enough to help you. Hunky Dory, maybe? Outside? Rise and Fall? Blackstar? His 1st hit Space Oddity? Only a Reznor associated song? Trust me. Deep dive him.
As an Animal Collective super fan (I’ve collected most of their albums, I’ve seen them live, I met the lead guy Avey Tare, he signed my CDs), I honestly do not know what Animal Collective album you would like. I’m sure you’re mostly referring to Merriweather Post Pavilion which was an album that had me stumped. However the way I got into them was by hearing the one before, Strawberry Jam. That’s when it clicked for me and by hearing that album, it made me more open and understandable to songs from Merriweather Post Pavilion. However, I don’t know if you’ve heard it because if you have, then I would say “Try Feels”but that one might be a bit boring by the end for you. Then I would say Try Sung Tongs but that one might weird you out. Then I would bring you to a newer album but you might not get that either. And I would have to avoid their earliest stuff cause it would scare you. So all in all, I would say.. Just listen to Person Pitch by Panda Bear (or Sleep Cycle by Deakin)
I have the exact same reasons for avoiding artists like Arcade fire, Bob dylan, Bruce springsteen, and Logic! Might like them more in the future, but who knows. It also hurts me to see Starset lol. I am curious what your thoughts are on songs like Where the Skies End and Icarus. Great video, John was worth my time!
happy to find out that you've changed your opinion on circa survive! personally, i love anthony's voice. it's unique and beautiful. being a big fan of his projects lately
My take on Knocked Loose: I saw them with Gojira and they were midway through their set until I realized they were playing a different song. I listened to them on Apple Music and got about four songs in until I noticed I wasn’t listening to the song I’d put on. I’m a diehard AC/DC fan so keep that in mind…..
I think the band grew with each releases. Are all of their songs bangers. No, but a big chunk of them do for me. I think the Fever era till now are the best they have ever sounded. Reminded me of Gravity - EP, they have a more focused on the rock elements that I really like. With them just ended their big tour and the band taking a rest to recover and Chrissy releasing her first Solo material this week. I'm excited to hear what they come back with once they're ready. Oh, I really hope Wildfire makes it into the album/EP because leaving that out as just a Single is just too good.
I actually really liked this format and concept. It's kinda inspired me to come up with my own for my little music blog. Of course I'd mention that I got the idea from you too though
I’m glad that Glass Beach ended up towards the higher end of this list. They aren’t nearly my favorite band, but Coelacanth is my song of the year so far. EDIT: I was only part of the way through the video, and because Starset is one of my favorite bands and it’s towards the bottom, I’m back in the middle.
Listening to As It Is after a long break from pop punk was a tough listen. They honestly have some bangers, but it feels like they lost themselves after Okay.
I feel like to listen to them and not cringe I have to be in a very specific mindset. Loved the great depression but even then, their other material just didn't work out for me and pretty soon even the one album I liked felt more corny each listen.
Just started watching your stuff today, because BratAlgorithm! Watching that vid first prepared me for your opinion of Charli here and honestly I can't argue against the "I like some stuff more than other stuff" energy with her since my roommate is exactly the same lol. Bruce Springsteen is a deep musical and personal sometimes tearful love I feel almost alone in having amongst my younger peers so I shed another tear at your opinion and moved on lol. JK we GenX/Millennial cuspers are strong in our righteous love of pre 1990 Bruce works and know the younger folks just didn't have the experience of being with Bruce in the 80s and you kinda had to be there. Oh yea btw! Your work is really good, love a confident music talker with different taste than me, I always learn stuff!
I used to be into Bastille...but I'm not much into them nowadays. Me and their music, we grew apart. Liked some of The Neighbourhood's songs, but I saw them live in 2016 and they were really bad. I remember seeing Pale Waves at a festival in 2019...they were ok, but I weren't invested into them back then, I'm not invested into them now. On a more positive note, it's nice to hear that Jon is warming up to The National. I think they're good, even if I haven't listened to absolutely everything they released....and even if I have to be in a specific mood to listen to them.
Bastille is weird to me. I still can listen to cuts like Pompeii or especially Icarus from the time where I was really into them. That was basically when music really became a hobby of mine but over time I listened to less and less of their music and seeing albums come out, listening to them made me wonder how they got so bad. Relistening to the stuff I liked after that made me realize, that even their older work wasn't all that great.
My question probably disappears into the shadows, but what do you think of the band Periphery? Have you ever heard of them or even listened to one of their songs?
The Beyhive can also play a factor into not getting into her music as they praise her albums like it’s God’s gift and if you criticize her, they’ll come for you (not all obviously), where before 4 IMO she was definitely more of a singles artist that transitioned into making really good albums.
Motionless in White is weird to me, because I like a lot of their peers but can't get into them in particular. I love their song with Knocked Loose, though, so they do have potential in my mind.
They're really hit or miss. Personally I really enjoyed things like cyberhex and undead ahead: the tale of the midnight ride but the last 3 songs of disguise is one of the worst 3 songs in a row moment I've ever experienced (close to old falling in reverse level of bad)
@@isaiahmilde I didn't say that they were bad songs. I said that they didn't connect with me at all and that in those three last songs I can see why John is not a fan of MIW even though I like the band. I think that they are hit or miss for a lot of person. One can connect with one and not the other more easily than other bands. But hey even that still remains my own opinion, feel free to explain why you would think otherwise.
Im the same with these, think the fact they take themselves far more seriously than their peers and their rabid fans make it harder to connect with them
When you said I'd see Glass Beach in a video soon I was specifically hoping "gosh I hope it's not a 'bands I can't get into' video" 😭 glad to see them in Heating Up though.
I agree about Bob Dylan. I completely disagree about Springsteen though. I'd say about 90% of his output is S-tier to me. Guy also worked his way from nothing to get where he got. I'd say he deserves his riches.
I was about to be upset at the potential for Gorillaz hate cuz they’re one of my favorite childhood groups, but I’m glad you’re coming around. They toy with genres and features a lot so not all their stuff is going to be for everyone, but they’re versatile enough that I think most people would be able to find a good chunk of their catalog enjoyable
This was a great video. Also your opinion on Lana Del Rey and The Smiths is interesting because both are well loved music artists with critically acclaimed music and lots of fans. However, I'll admit I like The Cure more than The Smiths. Robert Smith is way better than Morrissey. :)
i feel the same way about both those artists and TRUST ME even if an artists isnt my taste, i will try to look at it objectively but i still can’t get behind either of them
@@random-zz8ut I like Lana Del Rey and The Smiths but they are pretty overrated and not everybody's cup of tea. I respect both yours and artv's opinion though. There are better new wave and alternative pop artists out there imo.
If you can’t get into Bob Dylan bc of the vocals I highly reccomend Any Day Now by Joan Baez. She’s a songwriter but primarily records covers, most notably Bob Dylan. When being sung by her golden vibrato I find his music much more enjoyable, they even dated for a while and did a duet for his song “With God On Our Side” which was rlly good
I'm definitely with you on singers like Bruce Springsteen (as I hear him being praised all the time, especially by my family, yet when I listen to him it never interests me that much) I used to love bands like Arcade Fire, Journey, Pantera, Metallica (actually most metal bands I listened to growing up), Gorillaz (same with Blur) and even The Smiths, and while my love towards them did wear off a lot, I can still listen to them and even get really invested in them from time to time (And yeah, screw Morrissey as a person!) I'm not a huge fan of Bob Dylan either, but I too respect his legacy and his talent and I do like a few of his songs. "Tribute" and "Baby One More Time" are the only songs I heard/like from Tenacious D so far. The one band I personally could never get into that much is The Ramones. I can tolerate them and I do respect the impact they made in both punk rock and music in general, they just have very limited appeal to me. U2 on the other hand is still one of my favorite bands in spite of their oversaturation and creative decline as I still like a lot of their songs from the 80s, 90s and 2000s (and even a few from the 2010s) and I still love albums like The Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby.
Listening to Boy as a teenager, late at night in total darkness with my headphones on circa 1982, full moon shining through the window has still stuck with me. 42 years later. An Cat Dubh/Into the Heart. Pure bliss.
It’s interesting how you mentioned U2 since, as someone who’s gone through the halftime shows that are available to watch, I’m not into their halftime show. I get why it was a big deal due to what had been going on at the time. But, as a show, it’s not for me and I’m not into the songs performed. Well, that certainly was a hot take. Better put on some over mitts for it.
I agree with a lot and disagree with only a few honeslty i pretty much agree with you on most, one band i cant get into is Radiohead like i love the first 3 albums but everythinf after just runined the band for me☹️
Damn, you just dissed a ton of my favorite artists. Im going to rank the fact of each artist being here, not the spots. Don't take it personally. Just the ones I listen to. Still love you, Jon. Takes I disagree with: Beyonce, Bob Dylan, Charli XCX, Death Grips, Fleet Foxes, Gorillaz, Knocked Loose (I've only heard YWGBYST), Metallica (80s outweighs and 90s decent, rest isn't completely awful), Swans (patience, Jon) In The Middle: Bruce Springsteen, Don Toliver, Journey, National, Pantera (first two official albums have great highs), The Smiths (can be beautiful, but also pretentious), U2 (can be boring), Wilco (can also be boring) Takes I agree with: Dave Matthews Band, Future (aside from a couple songs), Glass Animals, Hobo Johnson, Jon Bellion, Juice WRLD (aside from a couple songs), Lana Del Rey, Logic, Mumford And Sons, The Neighbourhood,
haha, Lana Del Rey is my favorite. (Although less a fan of the folk-Americana turn she took on the last 2 albums). Her collaborations with producer songwriter Rick Nowells were the best. Now, Lana is best appreciated while under some influence. Freak, High on the Beach, Born to Die, Blue Jeans,Summertime Sadness while tripping... Just. Wow.
So a little thing I would like to just point out regarding DGD, and this is not me stirring anything up, even though they kind of keep this on the down low, it’s very much out there. So from my understanding, the reason for Kurt Travis’s departure from DGD, was because Will Swan was apparently not happy with the state of the band at that time, and he wanted to end DGD, but he wanted to go out with a bang, so he had ask Kurt to leave, in order to bring back Jonny. This later turned into DGD doing more shows, which later turned to more touring, which later turned into another album, and the rest is history. Again, none of the singers hate each other, and if anything, they have love and respect for one another. Although in a lot of ways I’m definitely in the minority that I’m glad that Kurt and Jonny didn’t return to DGD, even after this recent departure of Tillian. I just feel like Kurt is doing better things that are more suited for him in his musical endeavors that don’t involve DGD and I personally like him more in A Lot Like Birds.
I can understand the placement of every other musician but Pantera, Dimebags riffs and the overall groove of the band is just untouchable. In my opinion a top 5 Heavy metal band of all time.
Hey I get it man, I really do. The musicians in the band kick ass on another level, but since I was a kid I just couldn’t stand Phil’s presentation I guess I’d call it. His vibe, his presence, vocals, etc
A lot of these are artist whose first couple of works I still enjoy but they gradually got bad ie. ‘the Used’, ‘In this moment’, ‘Motionless in white’ and ‘Lana del Rey’. Their are quite a few artists I just don’t get either like ‘Gorillaz’, ‘Queens of the stone age’, ‘Eminem’, ‘Adele’, ‘AC/DC’, almost every rock act from the eighties
Animal collective is that type of band I just always wanted to listen to on shrooms. There were just so many sounds happening that it was perfect music for that experience. No shame
A few for me, avoiding artists I straight up dislike: Foals - This is the most frustrating one for me because I really love a number of their singles, i.e. Mountain at My Gates, The Runner, Hummer, My Number and a couple of deep cuts I've picked up on like Out of the Woods and Wash It Off, but I've listened to numerous albums and they just don't do anything for me as cohesive projects. Blur - This is a band I thought I liked for a while and still have enough of a passion for them to be annoyed when somebody refers to them as "one-hit wonders", but I've come to realise for every great song, there's a bland one I don't really care for, and I don't find Parklife to be that good of an album; over time I've come to realise the answer of Blur VS Oasis is Pulp. Also hot take but I hate Coffee & TV. The Verve - I think Bitter Sweet Symphony and The Drugs Don't Work are brilliant songs and a couple of others grew on me like Lucky Man, but I've listened to Urban Hymns and find it very bland overall and Richard Ashcroft is a bit of a one-trick pony in his songwriting. I've tried listening to their earlier shoegazy-psychedelic stuff because it was an influence on Doves, a band I now really love but that also leaves me cold. Catfish & The Bottlemen - Speaking of one trick ponies, Catfish. My mum's gotten super into them lately so I'm hearing them all the time and they have some undeniably great songs like Cocoon & 7 but it gets pretty repetitive eventually and I find Van McCann's voice annoying at times. I also consider them to be a worse version of Arctic Monkeys across all their "mainstream" albums. Gorillaz - Hey, it's Jon from 8 years ago lol. I picked up Demon Days from a charity shop a couple of years ago as part of a 3-for-1 deal and I enjoy the singles but haven't really gotten into anything else, with the spoken word of Fire Coming Out The Monkey's Head being very off-putting. Also my favourite song of theirs is 19-2000 and even then, it's the remix version I like. Radiohead - This is a band I've gotten more into to the point I'd say I'm a casual fan, but I do not get the universal critical acclaim for them. In Rainbows has several songs I enjoy but a lot I find extremely bland (in fact I genuinely prefer Bangers + Mash over most of the main album), and Kid A is mostly misses for me. Florence + The Machine - I need to listen to more of their albums really, Lungs is good and Florence Welch is a brilliant singer but I find it blends into one for the most part, and some of the singles are so overplayed I've become numb to them. I've also never understood the mass acclaim of Hunger, it's good but not THAT amazing.
I like Arcade Fire. Neon Bible and The Suburbs are two of the best alternative Rock albums from the late 00’s early 10’s. I’m also a fan of Springsteen although I don’t like everything he’s put out. Agree with a lot of the others, I’ve never been that fussed with Beyoncé, U2, The National etc.
I highly recommend you to check out a Japanese hip-hop & R&B girl group XG. They are a new underrated group debut in 2022. If you want to check out one of their songs, check out their recent song Woke Up. I can tell you this one thing with confidence. If XG was promoting mostly in Japan and South Korea, they would have dominated the current female rap in America. XG said it themselves that they are very inspired by the OG western artists like Jay-Z, TLC, Lauryn Hill, Beyoncé, etc. They have a lot of extra contents like their cyphers (XG Tape), cover songs that they did (XG Vox), their dance choreography videos, (XG Move). IN THEIR EXTRA CONTENTS, THEY PAY A LOT OF HOMAGES TO THE OG! 😂
Yea, like their first album. I feel like while they do seem like the 1975 on that record, they still had that distinct charm to them. After that, when that sound basically disappeared, I couldn't care less about it.
While I do disagree with a lot of the picks I will still watch your channel because I like hearing people different opinions on things with music being one of them.
I knew as soon as I saw the title, I knew The Smiths would be mentioned. I understand the dislike for Morrissey, but I don’t feel any vileness towards him. However, the rest of the group’s talent should be recognised.
Kings Of Leon from what i have heard of them (3 albums) i dont care for them much. Also while i do like songs by the likes of Billie Eilish and Lady Gaga i also am not huge fans of either of them
KOL are understandable for sure. I feel like I would probably pass on them if I was just hearing them now, but I’ve got nostalgia for a few of their best albums

Hey ARTV, what do you think is the greatest final album from any musical artist or band?
@@thiagopena3258 great question. I'm writing this idea down for a future SOS topic, thanks!
@artv I like Journey but get the feeling too. Don’t Stop Believing is ingrained inside my brain. There is no escape.
I do enjoy some of the artists on the list, but hey, that just shows that everyone has different opinions on artists we like and don’t like, and I respect that.
bro be like: watch me piss off 50 fanbases at once
Having a GOAT band like U2 in here is a crime!
But love Jon, I pardon him.
Why the hell did he put wilco here
The fact that the list was an alphabetical order made me way more happy than it should have lol
To misquote Awolnation: “blame it on my OCD” 😆 I’m all about alphabetical
Also shoutout the Dewey decimal system
I could’ve sworn you liked Charli XCX and Metallica. Some of the others make sense because I remember you either talking about not liking them before or just knowing your taste it makes sense but those two are ones that stuck out to me.
I do like them, just fine for both! Didn’t mean for that to be taken as a negative tier or anything, it’s more of just a “I love or like a lot of their songs, not so much full albums”
Nice to see Br00talSwAg return and go through his own rebranding!
The only free co-host I could find in 2024
I live for these long ranking vids!!!
circa survive are one of those groups where you either get it or you don't. I've shown them off to people who fell in love, and some people who wouldn't mind never hearing Green's vocals ever again. one of my personal favorites. great vid as always! love this long-form content
Not much of a Smiths fan and definitely not a Morrissey fan, but I do think "How Soon Is Now?" is one of the all time great songs.
I really like them. My short rant is "enjoy while sober, it's better that way (at least for my flavor of neurospicyness)".
I finally brought it up and one of my friends gave me one of their cds because he had an extra copy and that cd went in one ear and right out the other
Oh dude same. I listen to some Ice Nine Kills stuff and it didn’t stick with me at all.
@@gcolbyp exactly
Completely agree
Been a Starset fan since Transmissions and I can’t get my head around the idea that they haven’t changed over time. Anyone who thinks that is not paying attention, IMO.
@@AceHumanMy favorite song of theirs is Perfect Machine so I'm biased when I say hearing that live made me very happy haha
Perfect Machine is top tier. I can only imagine Dustin's vocals live!
When you said you didn't like the gravely voiced vocal style a'la Springsteen and you listed a bunch of similar artists, I was shocked you didn't add Gaslight Anthem here. I am interested in your opinion on them, since they also share a similar vocal style?
"It would be a low hanging fruit to just write off BVB because they're cheesy, and cringe, and have a sexy front man"
Proceeds to write off Motionless In White for those exact reasons.
I think motionless in white take themselves too seriously so it could be that
Arcade Fire at their best are superb, but there’s also a lot that leaves me uninterested. The Suburbs album however is a no skips for me.
It’s their best album in my opinion.
The suburbs is a masterpiece
Yeah, I'm hot and cold with AF, but Funeral & The Suburbs are essential indie albums
XX_BR00T4LSW4G and Cal Chuchesta should collab sometime in the distant future 😅😅😅
I've loved your vids for a while and get good recs from them, they're good quality keep it up :)
Great video idea/execution for real!!
Cool to see you've come around on Circa Survive!
Again very happy to see you getting into them 😃😃
🙏
No hate whatsoever cause we all like what we like, but I am a huge lana del rey fan myself and I’m curious on your takes on her later work. Especially the more sentimental songs, like the grants. The grants for instance is about taking on cherished memories of your loved ones to heaven with you when you die. She does occasionally bring back the nostalgiac but bad girl aesthetic sometimes but way less than her older career. I think her lyrics have really improved over the years but also your take is 100% valid! Curious to hear your thoughts on more recent releases like “did you know there’s a tunnel…” and NFR! :)
Much love, excited for a new artv vid as always
XX_BR00T4LSW4G in 2024?! This is something I never thought I’d see!
It's "XX" now 🙄 the price I pay to keep that guy in the attic I stg
I agree with the heavy majority of the bands you've listed so far, some of these artists have always just annoyed me lol.
anyway,
I almost died when I saw Death Grips, and it was INCREDIBLE. Great records as well, I'll disagree with that one.
NEW ARTV UPLOAD ⚠️⚠️ AND IT’S A TIER LIST VIDEO 🎉🎉
dont mind most of yout takes jon agree with most!
Great stuff here … as always, love that you share your thoughts and not giving into popular opinions.
It's baked into almost every aspect of their music in a way that's always given me very edgy scene kid "hehe welcome to my TWISTED mind 😈🔪⛓️🥀" and they're so lacking any of the subtleties or charisma or sincerity that their predecessors (like FOB) have
i love set it off so much but this is so real 😭 they do try very hard to be a certain thing
Surprised not to see Blur or Keane on here, especially Blur as they were on one of their previous iterations. Did you come around on them?
I feel like people expect something different than what they get from Set it Off. Yes, they do have parts of being edgy pop punk (Cinematics), but most of the time it's more on the pop side of pop punk, which can be a turn off for some people. I frankly love them but I can see them being divisive.
Thank you for making this! For the last couple years I've been trying to remember what the name of this band was that I had an album for like over a decade ago, but for the life of me could not figure it out. But now, finally, you've brought it back: Circa Survive! Thank you!
I have many artists I can't get into, but the most embarrassing one by far is David Bowie. I like I'm Afraid of Americans and that's about it 😅
Hey that’s ok!
I think against the currents first album has a very special vibe to it… i love wasteland and roses so much
I think the band grew with each releases.
🙏🙏
I’m glad that Glass Beach ended up towards the higher end of this list. They aren’t nearly my favorite band, but Coelacanth is my song of the year so far.
EDIT: I was only part of the way through the video, and because Starset is one of my favorite bands and it’s towards the bottom, I’m back in the middle.
Listening to As It Is after a long break from pop punk was a tough listen. They honestly have some bangers, but it feels like they lost themselves after Okay.
I feel like to listen to them and not cringe I have to be in a very specific mindset. Loved the great depression but even then, their other material just didn't work out for me and pretty soon even the one album I liked felt more corny each listen.
oooh my god. thank you for reminding me that hopelessness blues exists! it's soooo good, can't believe I forgot about it
The journey take is truth, over play kills it's for anyone unless you're a greatest hits fan which makes you not a fan an admirer of few songs
Arcade Fire is fun live and sound extremely good live so I in that way I am a fan of them. The rest of these bands I feel the same way as you do
Even though I already had a general idea/guess of what you were gonna say- this video was still an emotional rollercoaster for me 😩😭😫 hahaha
Hardcore punk mixed with metalcore? Isn't metalcore already supposed to be metal tinged hardcore punk?
XX Seems Rowdy Out Of The Closet
Dude, you’re such a talent, great vid
Kind of you to say, thank you!! Glad you loved it
I used to be into Bastille...but I'm not much into them nowadays.
Thank you for all the great content
I love Beyonce but I feel like to a lot of people, she's more of an ICON than she is a musician.
The Beyhive can also play a factor into not getting into her music as they praise her albums like it’s God’s gift and if you criticize her, they’ll come for you (not all obviously), where before 4 IMO she was definitely more of a singles artist that transitioned into making really good albums.
@@gcolbypspot on. I never thought I’d become a Beyoncé fan but hearing albums from 4 onwards it’s been an upwards rope
I feel like I hear way more about her as a person than I hear about her music

Well done, Jon! The editing on this vid is excellent!👌🏻

@@seefyodor5033Brand New Numb and Catharsis are two of their best songs wtf are you talking about
@@isaiahmilde I counldn't agree less
I respect this list. I don’t agree with all of it, but I respect it 🤘🏻
I agree about Bob Dylan.
I completely disagree about Springsteen though. I'd say about 90% of his output is S-tier to me. Guy also worked his way from nothing to get where he got. I'd say he deserves his riches.
Give Swans some time, you'll click with it one day
I was about to be upset at the potential for Gorillaz hate cuz they’re one of my favorite childhood groups, but I’m glad you’re coming around.
So glad you're getting into National. Sorry it comes with the price of depression 😅
If you can’t get into Bob Dylan bc of the vocals I highly reccomend Any Day Now by Joan Baez. She’s a songwriter but primarily records covers, most notably Bob Dylan. When being sung by her golden vibrato I find his music much more enjoyable, they even dated for a while and did a duet for his song “With God On Our Side” which was rlly good
I'm definitely with you on singers like Bruce Springsteen (as I hear him being praised all the time, especially by my family, yet when I listen to him it never interests me that much)
I used to love bands like Arcade Fire, Journey, Pantera, Metallica (actually most metal bands I listened to growing up), Gorillaz (same with Blur) and even The Smiths, and while my love towards them did wear off a lot, I can still listen to them and even get really invested in them from time to time (And yeah, screw Morrissey as a person!)
I'm not a huge fan of Bob Dylan either, but I too respect his legacy and his talent and I do like a few of his songs.
Personally, The Smiths are one of my favourite bands. I’m not a huge Lana Del Rey fan but I think she belongs in the It’s Fine tier.
I agree with a lot and disagree with only a few honeslty i pretty much agree with you on most, one band i cant get into is Radiohead like i love the first 3 albums but everythinf after just runined the band for me☹️
W WILCO!!! Jon go see wilco live and let us know if you change your mind. I saw them 2 times and it was incredible. I love wilco
Damn, you just dissed a ton of my favorite artists.
Im going to rank the fact of each artist being here, not the spots. Don't take it personally. Just the ones I listen to. Still love you, Jon.
Takes I disagree with: Beyonce, Bob Dylan, Charli XCX, Death Grips, Fleet Foxes, Gorillaz, Knocked Loose (I've only heard YWGBYST), Metallica (80s outweighs and 90s decent, rest isn't completely awful), Swans (patience, Jon)
In The Middle: Bruce Springsteen, Don Toliver, Journey, National, Pantera (first two official albums have great highs), The Smiths (can be beautiful, but also pretentious), U2 (can be boring), Wilco (can also be boring)
Takes I agree with: Dave Matthews Band, Future (aside from a couple songs), Glass Animals, Hobo Johnson, Jon Bellion, Juice WRLD (aside from a couple songs), Lana Del Rey, Logic, Mumford And Sons, The Neighbourhood,
haha, Lana Del Rey is my favorite. Just. Wow.
Hey bro! Your vids are fire! 🔥
Where'd you rank The Velvet Underground? I remember you say you couldn't get into them also
Utter Confusion if I had to pick a tier
@@beyondartv Ah kay thanks
I can understand the placement of every other musician but Pantera, Dimebags riffs and the overall groove of the band is just untouchable. In my opinion a top 5 Heavy metal band of all time.
Hey I get it man, I really do. The musicians in the band kick ass on another level, but since I was a kid I just couldn’t stand Phil’s presentation I guess I’d call it. His vibe, his presence, vocals, etc
@@artvjon I get it, at least you admit that dimebag and Vennie are kick ass.
Lmaooo Jon you forgot to mention when U2 told Apple to put one of their albums into your phone/iPod over night WITHOUT YOUR CONSENT HAHAHAHA 😂💀😂💀😂💀
I’d love to know your take on Enter Shikari - Americans and Canadians seem to have a strange time liking them
I’m British and I just can’t dig them, I’ve heard most of their material. I don’t think there a bad band though, just isn’t my thing.
@@thevale2456 I mean… they are a band
^ hot take but I agree, they are a band.
@@artvjon Haha 😂
@@thevale2456 you cheeky little comment editor
A lot of these are artist whose first couple of works I still enjoy but they gradually got bad ie. ‘the Used’, ‘In this moment’, ‘Motionless in white’ and ‘Lana del Rey’. Their are quite a few artists I just don’t get either like ‘Gorillaz’, ‘Queens of the stone age’, ‘Eminem’, ‘Adele’, ‘AC/DC’, almost every rock act from the eighties
I’ll never understand your disdain for Set It Off tbh but I’ll respect it. I am not hearing what your hearing whatsoever 😅
Animal collective is that type of band I just always wanted to listen to on shrooms. There were just so many sounds happening that it was perfect music for that experience. No shame
A few for me, avoiding artists I straight up dislike:
Foals - This is the most frustrating one for me because I really love a number of their singles, i.e.
I don’t listen to much of the same music that I used to but I still loveeee Pale Waves. All of their songs are so good to me!!
Their first album is really good but for me there far too generic and uninspired, wear their influences on their sleeve far too much.
Ranking your 50 biggest skill issues
I knew as soon as I saw the title, I knew The Smiths would be mentioned. I understand the dislike for Morrissey, but I don’t feel any vileness towards him. However, the rest of the group’s talent should be recognised.
I'm right there with you when it comes to Springstein and Dylan
Kings Of Leon from what i have heard of them (3 albums) i dont care for them much. Also while i do like songs by the likes of Billie Eilish and Lady Gaga i also am not huge fans of either of them
KOL are understandable for sure. I feel like I would probably pass on them if I was just hearing them now, but I’ve got nostalgia for a few of their best albums
Ugh, same, regarding KOL! Their music annoys me sm
I only listen to Dance Gavin Dance if it’s their instrumental albums.
😂😂
death grips and the smiths get behind me 😤
Journey has good singles but you’ll never convince me they’re not a singles band
It was weird how I agreed with most of these and then every once in a while a band I love would show up 😂
