Yes. Tuomas is master of writing very emotional songs. I really like also other his projects without the Nightwish (Auri, The Life and Times of Scrooge). But the quality of composer is one part of the song. The quality of composer is always the basic part of the song, but the interpretation of the song (singer) is also very important, because the singer puts the real emotions into the song and makes the final result. This is reason, why the singer is always discussed a lot.
The song is nothing special compositionally. It's the performance that makes it great.
This is excellent, she's singing something written for her voice, and it works. Can't people just enjoy it?

I do agree about Anette and the pop band bit, enjoyed her moment in the band but she has been upgraded on a significant scale. Unfortunatly she followed Tarja and never really got the love of the fans that Floor did.

And I watched some live performances of her with Nightwish I absolutely hated, because she failed at every single song written for Tarja. On album singing the songs written for her she did fine, but the band shouldn't have played their old songs with her as a singer live. She struggled like hell to get through them.

There are several points to say, besides the hate she got from all the angry fans (absolutely not right) - there are some things that make you think twice when it come to Anette. One, her studio performance is brave - her live performances not that much. Taking the Nightwish repertoire is challange, but even her own songs presented some problems. Dodging high notes, doging climax and not being able to deliver the song in several recordings. You can see that in many performances. The old songs - some did good, but never great - as Ever Dream, She is My Sin, Sleeping Sun and Dead to World. Also, she keeps doing melismas all the time as vicius thing - several songs, its her thing, but not fit.
Don't take me wrong, is she a soprano, - cause the band did not changed the key for the songs (or they would have to record everything again) - but it does not impress. I love thhe studio recordings, not even close to to the live shows and thats when a singer shows its best. I could be related to her technique and singing learning.
Also, when it comes to be a female front woman from a band as Nightwish u should present itself better and her 'costumes' are mad weird, come on... a green bag? , she did not embrace this side and her stage presence also lacks.

I'm old enough to know Nightwish from the first albums - and this song is their most impressive. Epic, profound, emotional, massive, tender, and existentialistic - an incredibly ambitious composition and their greatest work. And it fits Anettes voice and persona perfectly.

Don't get any wrong,,, They don't hate Annete. Maybe they disappoint cz some of NW's songs just like lost their emotion while on stage. Then, Floor came and nailed all the emotion, power, story telling on almost NW's songs to the deepest part. I'm sure, they're still love NW's songs with Annete on studio version.

Anette did what she could do. SInging the stuff another way. Good but obviously not as impressive. Tara... is her own league. She never was as exact in her Opera Voice like Floor but.... she F...... this shit and it felt true. And not hardly bound to a voice. Thats the difference. Tara is a pure singer.. someone who doesnt thought toooo much about techniche. Sometimes she went off but it was totaly ok. Anette very rarely sings a wrong tune.. cause thats what she has learned. And Floor. Yes her Opera Voice and singing is neraly Flawless.. but she sucks everytime she needs to sing in another voice. Thats the negative effect when you are a trained opera singer.
So for me... Floor is the worsed for this Band. But i never would say she cannot sing.. her opera voice, besides the slang that was absolute great :D .. tops Tara.
@@MrZevv Tarja is by far their worst singer in terms of technique. Floor is the most technical with the biggest range and often belts parts where the others had to use headvoice. Anette was a good singer but may have had a voice more suited for pop music.

In terms of who is the best.. who the fuck knows. It's a matter of personal preference, and each of their eras offer something different. So something to almost anyone who likes everything from Symphonic Metal to Rock.
What I really can't stand is that the hate on Anette stands to this day. The woman can never ever catch a break from the diehard fanbase, and it's always the same. Floor is SOOOOOOOOOOO much better than Anette ever was. It's pathetic from a fan of the band to behave like that.
I don't care how much Floor Jansen belts or screams or do other stuff the other two never did much of. I don't care how much of a better technical singer she is. They each had their stengths and weaknesses, as humans do. Floor is still only a human, and without the right mixing, she sounds like shit as well.
One thing that Floor Jansen never had and never will have, is Anette Olzon's soft fairytale voice that sounds like a voice coming from an enchanted place. The voice that Tuomas and the rest of the band still to this day respects and loves. This is why her versions of Anette's songs are mere imitations of the originals (including this song, no matter how much the Floor Jansen fanbase cries over it).
Anette Olzon's voice was perfect for what Nightwish and Tuomas tried to do back in 2007 and 2011. Saying she belongs in pop music because blah blah shows an inherent lack of understanding for what the band wanted to do and what they were looking for. Fact remains that Anette Olzon's era was the height of the band's career and it will never reach to that height again. And without Olzon, they would still be playing in small clubs and venues, and not arenas like now.
I started listening to Nightwish about 2 years ago when I was in the army. Their “orchestral” style wasn’t too fit for me. Storytime was the first song I liked, and then I got obsessed with nightwish. So, as I’m 27, I first heard of the “beef” for the three singers a year ago, when I was a codriver in an army vehicle and the driver was a nightwish fan. He told me about the 3 different singers, and how some of them were worse than the others, or better. I knew there were different singers in some albums, but didn’t care. I first fell in love with Floor on lives, while the studio versions had a different singers. The poet and the pendulum was one of my most important songs during my time in the army for many reasons, but when I heard of this version, Jesus it was such a blessing. Guys. You have so many wonderful Nightwish songs, and you can still listen to them with different singers. Each and everyone of them is totally different, so you listen to the same song, but you fall in love with it like the first time. I can’t imagine anything better than that. So many bands and I only wished the song to be erased from my head and listen to it again. And you have it with Nightwish. How can anyone disagree with that?

I don't understand why people say she can't sing live. When she sings the songs that were written for her, she is AMAZING. Of course she's not going to sound like Tarja in GLS, her voice has completely different strengths. But her DPP and Imaginaerum songs are SO GOOD live.

I've seen Nightwish with all the 3 singers. Dark Passion Play is my favorite Nightwish album and Anette did a great job singing the songs live. For me the best of Nightwish.

Conocí Nightwish cuando recién comenzaban, escuché sus dos primeros trabajos y hasta ahí. Pasó el tiempo y supe que salió Tarja y del odio a "la nueva", luego supe del ingreso de Floor, pero nunca sentí interés por escuchar la banda hasta ahorita que por un short que me apareció sentí curiosidad cómo sonaba NW con Annette. Dicho lo anterior, no soy un experto en la banda, no conozco la discografía con Annette ni con Floor, aunque tengo un pequeño conocimiento con Tarja. Sé que todas tienen un estilo diferente y lo peor que se puede hacer es compararlas. Vengo conociendo esta canción sin prejuicios y puedo asegurar que es una tremenda canción y que Annette hace un gran trabajo. Considero que los fans nunca la terminaron de aceptar solo porque llegaba después de Tarja y por su forma de vestir (recuerdo que eso lo criticaba mucho un amigo mío por aquellos años que era fan de la banda). Debemos entender que la visión de Nightwish en ese momento era diferente y, probablemente, trataban de separarse del sonido con Tarja para refrescar su esencia.
Still a great period of the band! Anette will always be my favourite singer for Nightwish and I'm missing Jukka too..., and now Marko as well..., but great memories remains forever! 🤘

I feel for Anette.... she's a great singer, but came between Tarja and Floor. Next to no one can compete with that being the competition. She has the fortune of being the singer on the most powerful Nightwish album, so she'll always have that going for her. I do prefer Floor, but Anette is great in her own right. It would be kind of weird hearing Tarja sing this since it was conceived with her firing from the band....
I totally agree with you, and musically speaking "dark passion play" and "imaginaerum" are the most powerfull albums Nightwish have made and Annette is the one singing in those and no one can take that away from her, I personally like a lot her amaranth studio version and many others, but being honest with you i now preffer to hear some of those songs sang by Floor, but utterly respect Olsen's work ins those records.

This is what I tell everyone... Anette is a great singer, but not a symphonic metal singer, and that's ok, it doesn't make her voice less great, she's going very well at her project with Jani Liimatainen "The Dark Element" which is melodic metal. The only thing that bothers me so much, is the fact that Tuomas made two amazing albums with Anette, but with Floor he wrote one that is one of the worst in Nightwish story, I don't know... Endless Forms Most Beautiful didn't convinced me that Tuomas knows what he's doing musically nowdays, it's sad considering he could give us the Floor Jansen we had in After Forever days, it's sad :(

Every listerner has different preferences. I prefer the voice of Anette. I compared same songs with Anette and with Floor several times in different days and I always like more the Anette versions. I like the contrast between the hard music and her delicate little bit sweet (not so strong) very emotional voice. Floor's voice is too "cold" for me. But this is only my opinion and I understand other preferences of other people.
Anette is Anette and Floor is Floor, it´s impossible to compare the incomparable, and the same with the drummer Jukka and the bass Marko! Well done Anette, you did your best!

I like Annette's voice. This song has unbelivably perfect orchestration which is a masterpiece on its own, and only this not academic but still very emotional vocal completes the song in a right way. I always loved Anette right from the get go, I love all 3 singers - they're all amazing & bring their own flavor to the band. However, i'll never forget reading the comments on all her songs & lives back at the time they released, it was nothing but horrific waves of hate. Even on the Tarja MV's - it was always people going back to comment on them just to hate on Anette. So I gotta say, it's a refreshing joy to see the comments praising her now. Her contribution to the band is amazing and are some of the best albums of the genre. For those who like Anette - I recommend checking out her solo career as well as her work with The Dark Element, her voice is even more amazing.

imaginarium is by far, my favourite nightwish Album. All singers have done their stuff and I love Floor, I also love Tarja and I am going to see her too next year year, as well as Nightwish in December later this year, and Im also quite a fan of Anette, so each to their own.

Actually, I'm a Tarja's era lover, and I could never totally like Anette's voice. So I've stopped hearing them until Floor came. Meaning I've learned to love Anette's songs with Floor's voice. The point is, now that I have listened to Floor in this song, I actually see how good Anette is. She has not the same presence on stage, alright, but now I'm listening to old records with Anette and I realize she's really really good.

I experienced the same process as you unless I still listened to Nightwish in Anette era. But you are right, Anette did actually a very good job. I think at that time we were not so familiar with the vocal change. Tarja and Anette just simply have two different styles of singing.

My favorite NW vocalists: Anette and Marko. Their best phase was with Anette. Respect for Floor and Tarja, but Anette brought a new air to NW. After Anette's dismissal, despite having another good vocalist, nothing good was released.
I recommend Anette's latest solo album to everyone. It's really incredible.
I also feel bad for Annette. She has a very bright voice that wasn’t well suited for Nightwish. I’ve seen several interviews with her, and she truly seems like a really nice lady. She seemed really shocked at the sheer hatred for her on the web amongst NW fans.
my biggest issue with her as a concert goer would be which anette shows up? there are nights when she is dead on perfect and some, a screech owl would sound better.
But the important thing is she fought through it. The only Nightwish member to actually fight for the approval of fans.
@@dougmphilly at least you can admit shes very good at times. the mindless haters just say shes out of tune all the time which is BS. she was actually much more consistent during Imaginaerum tour, so its not her fault the band kicked her when she was at her best, rather its a shame they built her up to tear her down in the end and kind of showing her she was never good enough to begin with, with that stupid Elize/Alyssa moment everyone praises them for.
She had the misfortune of following Tarja, she was unfortunately also for the fans the rebound boyfriend/girlfriend after you've been dumped. Its hard to compare with the past one.

Fuck I was one of the fans who cursed Tuomas Family for 5 generations after he fired Tarja and naturally thought Anette was awful after replacing Tarja but the more I listen to her the more I like it, she's an amazing singer and a lot of Nightwish's songs are more suited to her voice than the other two....this song here is a prime example

I hope the new generation of Nightwish fans know that if you read this song lyrics upside down it tells a different story than when you read from the bottom to the top. It’s based on The Poet and the Pendulum by Edgar Alan Poe. You don’t know what is music and poetry combined until you know Nightwish.
I like this performance, the worst thing one person can do is to watch Annette's era songs sang by the Mighty Floor first, 'cause it will ruin any attemp to appreciatte Annettes work in "dark passion play" and "imaginaerum" The level Floor is in is unmatchable, but Annette did fine and musically speaking those records are pretty awesome and had major song singles that they never had with Tarja for example, being Nemo perhaps the only one, so it is not fair how people bash and hate Anntte for no reason, as I said, she did fine. She has her flaws like everybody, live shows wasnt her thing, but maybe the cause was the complexity of Nightwish's songs and the amount of effort it requires to sing live, i can assure that in a pop band annette would have own every single show she is in, but this is not the case, on the other hand Floor is a nature Phenom, tha woman is able to mix or blend annette and tarja's styles with such an ease thats why Nightwish is now a complete well oiled band, and you can see how happy and comfortable they are with Floor when they share stage together and blast all this songs. Great band.

I totally agree. I think "Dark Passion Play" is one of my favourite Nightwish albums. I like Annettes vocals on both of her studio albums with the band. She's actually a pretty good singer. Maybe she sounds a little too "ABBA"-esque.

I think that Anette can do a lot better than this. I'm disappointed but I have heard that her live performances with Nightwish are not very good. I think she's a great singer, just not the singer for Nightwish. Now Floor Jansen, she has killed every song she has ever sang Live except for scaretale. That song will forever be Anettes because there are certain elements of the song that not even the mighty floor can sing. I've heard that her voice is perfect and Angelic in this song. Apparently I heard wrong. They might be talking about the studio copy but anybody including myself who cannot sing a note could record a halfway decent studio album and she recorded a great one so there you go.

In the final part, her voice, her eyes are beautiful as a whole, her voice, music, she is the best thing that has happened to Nightwish.....No more, no less.

I think people keep forgetting that it is the pop vocals of Anette that made Nightwish more widely known and scored them their biggest hits.

Okay, brand new fan here, now completely obsessed with Nightwish. Read about the drama, yada yada, read about how different Annete was to Tarja and yes, I can understand it was jarring, read about Floor who ultimately took over and yes, she's a phenom! But gotta say, I think Annete is amazing in her own right and really pulled off this very long epic tale with brilliance! Nightwish rocks! The end!! 😍
She totally butchered 11:10 part. It's supposed to be very calm and emotional moment, but the way she sang it, it seemed like a drunk karaoke version.

I loved both of the albums we benefited from Anette’s vocals on. Yes she isn’t as strong as Floor or Tarja, but both recordings are great. The one thing that is indisputable is the quality of the musicians. Absolutely fantastic. Thank you Nightwish. I had breakfast with Thomas after the Wembley gig three years ago.

Besides the fact that Tuomas is the GOAT Annette has a beautiful voice, she obviously does not have the 'metal' singer presence to perform as Tarja or Floor but was a wonderful addition to Nightwish and their evolution.

For me after tarja left anette was the only one wich fit for nightwish music and songs. She has a very warm tone. Floor is vocally a powerhouse but there is no NW vibes. Only when she sings the old nw songs.
The vocalist plays a HUGE role in how the songs sound. Anette recorded her vocals for her Night wish albums separately from the band. She did a lot of the vocal arrangements for the songs. So with Anette's vocal arrangements, and her bright and energetic tone on the fast songs and her emotion and feeling on the ballads we got two of the best Night wish albums of their career, with dynamic and versatile vocals. Hence the high album sales and popular singles on those two albums. The two Floor albums are among the worst selling of their career in part due to the lack of diversity and energy in the vocals IMO. For just one example I think Elan would have been a HUGE hit if Anette had sung it. Don't get me wrong, I think Floor is a spectacular live singer and performer (the best since Freddie Mercury tbh.) But her album vocals, while impressive, don't really hit you in the gut (other than her occasional operatic vocals which are really moving) or get your toes tapping. In the studio Floor is more impressive than engaging. Compare the Anette albums to the Floor albums. Same songwriter. Same producer. Same high quality of songs. So why have sales dropped so far on the Floor albums? In my opinion it's the vocals and the vocal arrangements. Anette is much more versatile in the colors and tones and shades she uses in her voice, making her singing very expressive. Floor is impressive and does operatic but there's not much energy or variation with her in the studio. That said, Floor is truly spectacular live and no one touches her in that setting. She's a metal singer with a metal image so she suits Night wish better on stage. But I'll take the Anette albums any day over the others.

As a Floor fanboy I have to say, insightful! I never listen to the studiorecordings. I only know Floor from her live performance...

Floor is great, but IMHO heavy belting, grunting, leather and spikes have no place in most of the NW material.
In that famous GLS performance she sounds and looks like she's gonna kill you and that's not what the song is about. And her operatic voice sounds like a clucking chicken. Otherwise she's great.
@miroslavsirakov8780 while I love Floor, I don't like the way so many of her fans make excuses for her when she's less than perfect: for example forgetting the lyrics to How's The Heart one time (clip is on TH-cam,) if Anette had done that they would have crucified her. And I somewhat agree with you about Floor's operatic vocals, at least live (on the records she sounds great): on Storytime, Anette does not sing the choir part. Does Floor? Well, yeah, but she does it in an operatic style that sounds weird, like she's warbling. Love Floor but she's not perfect all the time (no one is.)
I prefer Anette than Floor
She is a more direct in your face rock singer and she has more charming and interesting personality

MOST OF THOSE, I REPEAT, MOST OF THOSE who talks trash on her must have discovered nightwish RECENTLY or one of those just TOXIC FAN WHO THINKS THEY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT. I'm a fan of those three really. I'm a fan of every era these singers created. I don't care who they are. REAL NIGHTWISH FANS UNDERSTAND why they favor one singer than the other but don't understand the reason of hating that "lacking singer". If nightwish comes to tour with any of these singers, I'll go because I'm a fan rather than just being IMMATURE.
I'll be honest, I was not expecting this to be as good as it was. I watched the Wacken 2013 version first, so I was expecting Anette to suck. guess what? She didn't. Her style was different, to be sure. Did I think it was as good as the Wacken 2013? No, but, I will admit there were some parts that I enjoyed as much, if not better than how Floor sang them.
One other thing I will mention, is that Marko's vocals were not as good (IMHO) during this performance as what he did during the 2013 performance. They were not as dynamic as the aforementioned.
I loved the choral parts in this performance.
Wacken 2013? This wasn't in Wacken 2013.. Plus, Floor did it with more power and less emotions as usual, which ruined it, at least for me.
