  • Mainstream TVs are not capable of displaying proper HDR pictures and that's the reason why I'm getting questions from many of you on how to brighten up the image on such TVs. In this video, I'm showing which settings I would tweak in order to improve this without really messing up the colors and creative intention.
    Applicable to HDR content over streaming services such as Netflix, HBO Max, Disney+, Prime Video, etc.

    Just create two modes : "standard" for TV channels (Warm1), and "cinema" for platforms content (Warm2+Contrast enhancer low). Just call it with the vocal assistant to change the mode.

    To get rid of the darkness altogether try these solutions: for Roku devices go to the display settings chose 4K display , the one with no HDR and on Sony disc players shut off the HDR function completely in setting and use the projector function. If there is a setting that shuts off the HDR on other players do it. HDR is not well implemented at this time. Directors are making some very poor choices using it and the TV sets often do not process it well. The only videos that looks flawless in HDR are the demo videos on TH-cam.

    Hello Darko. Please help me. I want to buy TCL C635, it looks amazing and its affordable for me. Will HDR be washed out and too dark? Will it at least look ok? Is there a way in that case to turn it off? What about 4K movies on 4K UHD discs, will they still look good? I can't really afford Quantum HDR TV with 1000 or 2000 nits. Please help me decide. Is 4K even worth the upgrade if I won't use HDR? I don't really want to buy another 1080p TV.

    • @TVguyDarko
      @TVguyDarko  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey! C635 like almost all mainstream TVs is not really capable of displaying real HDR picture since for that it would need to have local dimming and higher peak brightness. I haven't measured that one, but I would guess it is brighter than Samsung's AU/BU series, so picture should be brighter. HDR cannot be turned off, so the only choice to see SDR picture is to play content over external player that either doesn't support HDR or in which you can disable it (like on Panasonic UHD players: th-cam.com/video/fI_lNsjbxJM/w-d-xo.html). Anyway, with available controls HDR should not be too dark/washed out.

      @@TVguyDarko You're a live saver.... Will the HDR be atleast okay? Isn't it going to be dull or possibly worse than SDR? From what I understand the TV will probably put it in HDR container instead of displaying true HDR? Sorry I'm on a budget but it seems like it's a good TV for it's price.

    I had a similar problem with the Philips 58pus8535 that I had. The picture would get bright in HDR pq and Dolby vision but in prime video , Netflix or 4K blu tay if I watched something in HDR10 the picture would turn very dark.
    I checked all the settings but backlight contrast and brightness was @ 100 but it looked like backlight was @ 0
    I no longer have the TV because the TV just quit outputting an image after just 13 months use.

    • @Steve30x
      @Steve30x ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TVguyDarko there was a 3 year warranty with it but I messed up and the warranty wouldn't cover the damage I accidentally caused.
      You see I was looking up any solution to the problem I had like a way to hard reset it without seeing what's on the screen.
      I came across a website that stated all Philips tvs have a reset button so I took the TV off the wall bracket to search for the button that doesn't exist.
      When I hung the tv on the wall again I mustnt have hooked it on the wall bracket properly because the left side slipped off the wall bracket and hit the floor hard putting a dent on the bezzle and cracking the back.
      I hooked it on the wall bracket again and once again after about 30 seconds it came off the left side and smashed the screen on the corner.
      So I had to dump the TV. I wish I did get it fixed because despite the flaws it was superior to the LG TV I have now.

    In samsung bu8000 i had experienced the same.
    Just forget filmmaker mode and movie mode
    Use standard mode
    Use warm2
    Contrast enhancer - high
    Brightness settings - use according to your lighting setup and preference
    Trust me... It's better than film maker mode or movie mode, the amount of color accuracy you may gain from this mode is less compared to overall picture quality and brightness you get from the settings i mentioned
    Motion smoothing settings is upto you, if you like it use it

    @maricallo6143 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How strange, Samsung usually tend to over-brighten the content. You may think it's too dark but that may well be how the colorist and director intended. However, in this Samsung TV's case, i think it's deliberately too dark to hide the fact that this TV has no local dimming and, consequently, grayish blacks when backlight is at maximum. If you watch in the daylight, you may reach out to adjusting the PQ curve (for day settings) but you really shouldn't watch HDR in a daylit room. I have measured Dolby Vison Dark to be the most accurate on my Hisense OLED but many people find it too dark. Well, to bad, that's just how it's supposed to be.
    What timecode is that scene, I'd like to check it out?

    • @TVguyDarko
      @TVguyDarko  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Mari,
      This is true about Samsung, but in case of mainstream TVs that support HDR, with low peak luminance TV simply cannot follow the PQ curve and despite of max. brightness settings (LED luminance), the image is not bright enough. This specific unit has peak luminance of not even 300 nits in those accurate picture modes. In those not accurate ones it is slighly higher (350 nits), but that's again very low.
      This scene is at the very beginning of that movie.

    Can anyone please tell me why all of a sudden when I play a show on Netflix, the shows picture is dark but the menu is perfect. This only happens when I actually hit play to watch something.

      The menu looks the same - what is different is the content itself which can be in two main formats - SDR or HDR. Does this happen only with HDR or with standard (HD) content as well? Which model of the TV do you have?

      @TVguyDarko Thanks for responding. Its a Samsung Smart tv about 5 yrs old.
      Im watching through Roku, and that menu looks fine too.
      It seems to do it with all shows, except I watched seinfeld a few months ago and it was ok.
      The show Ozarks was bad also.
      I thought i changed the settings but still nothing.

    • @atrio1136
      @atrio1136 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@JoeLazzaraFrom my experience, it's because some shows you're watching have a type of HDR (HDR10/+ or Dolby Vision etc) which is making the picture very dark. Some shows don't have it so the picture wont be as dark.
      Increase the gamma like he did in this video, until you are happy with the picture. I don't like increasing shadow detail as it makes the image a bit washed out, i like to increase gamma first, but if i really need to, i will increase shadow detail by one or two at maximum.

    • @atrio1136
      @atrio1136 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I also change the settings back when I'm watching something that doesn't have the darkness issues with HDR10/+ etc.
      The later episodes of American Horror Story are very dark from the HDR10, with heavy blacks causing detail loss, so i change my settings for that and some films, but then change it back for others. It just depends on what type of HDR the show, film etc is using.

    Even the most high-end Samsung TV suck now with HDR settings paid for 8K Samsung top of the line qled crap almost $4,000 and it still looks like crap on Netflix when using their native app when I plug it in on my laptop which is a high-end one I had to use the windows calibration for the 2.2 HDMI and it comes out good it just sucks that the native app and you pay for all this money and their firmware does it match and I know because I can check the codes on we're supposed to be at HDR 10 at the max when it's doing the handshake it drops up and down and Netflix is constantly trying to adjust the HDR settings when you're at mid-level 4,000 nits and that's sad for having an 8K 10 HDR quantum qled, I have to flash the TV the whole firmware and write a bunch of codes on there for it to work and I know this comes from Samsung's end on their firmwares, I just think they play a lot of games with their priority software crap it's bad enough they don't update a lot of they tend to break, equipment that used to work prior to an update especially Dolby atmos earc, and I know they're doing it on purpose it's all in the codes and you cannot lie.

      I'm wondering what has happened with UHD Premium certificate that was at least some guarantee that you will get a TV that has a good HDR. Now everyone can put HDR/DV labels on their TVs but unless you check the specifications (usually somewhere other than manufacturer's website), you just cannot know if you will get a good HDR or fake HDR TV. Sure, the price is a good indication of that, but again, average consumer cannot easily know.
