Bears are excellent climbers. 5 years ago i was with three of my caving friends and we were just about to go down inside a perfectly vertical shaft, no strata gaps, just cliff face, just big enough to fit a whiskey barrel down its central axis. We dropped rope and we were prepping the gear when a black bear (european variant) popped out right in the middle of us, looked at us, we looked at it, it sniffed or huffed at us and just walked past us into the forest. Suffice it to say we went home early for a change of unmentionables. Bears are better climbers than us.

Matt, work with thermal a lot. The reason why there are times you have a hard time distinguishing between that and trees is a phenomenon called thermal crossover. Nothing to do with your setting, just the ambient temperature of the two object being perceived by thermal imaging. It occurs mostly as dusk and dawn, but you will get it a lot in vegetation and undulating terrain with thermal currents. Best time will always be night but best time of day is as far away from dawn and dusk (ie midday)

Mat you might want to walk the area that the bear was seen first to see if there are any bear signs, such as tracks or scat. When you find that it will give you a better target area. When you find any signs of the bear if its female and is making the ranch its home range it can be 2.5 to 10 square miles, if its a male its range can be a much larger area that being 10 to 59 square miles. Hope this helps your Bear locating.

  • @BryanH2700

@Matt Carriker thermals will work in all normal temps because they display the difference (or delta) between the thermal energy being emitted between objects graphically. There is a phenomenon that happens twice daily that makes it more difficult to see that but you can still use it during the day.

the Mavic T is one thats heavily used for the Utility field, mostly by electric companies and Telecom to find faults and issues within the grid/net. a hot line is easy to detect with thermal and much easier than trying to determine thermal resistance values. I've used a drone to find aerial line faults on Copper trunk lines that feed entire cities, those things push a couple hundred volts and a fault will make them glow bright af on thermals.

I've been hunting with nightvision for a little while. In my experience the best time for nightvision is a couple of ours after sunset, because you still can ser clear contrast from trees etc. because they hold the heat for a longer time than say thin bushes and grass and stuff. But you of course also see animals really well. So if contrast and clearity is what you ate going for than yes, a couple of hours after sunset is the best time for it.

Love the content with the drones. Just watch taking the batteries to critical (sub 30%) as it can damage the battery. Also, leaving them on but not flying can overheat the drone. Lots of fail safes built in the DJI products thankfully to keep that stuff to a minimum should you push it too its limits but still best practice. I would be a little careful about what you post due to the FAA cracking down on content creators as well. With the new remote ID laws in place for uav pilots you may find some of the things you want to do carry some hefty fines now. :( If you aren't 107 certified you will definitely want to be or have someone that is along with the knowledge that comes with it to avoid any run ins with the FAA. Other than that I can't wait to see the amazing footage you get with the new Thermal on the Demolitionranch channel!

Quality Drone and definitely a great addition to the resort !!
Not only will it help you to find the wild animals but it'll also give you peace-of-mind when you open the resort since you can do a fly-over of the ranges so you know that no-one is walking or working around them before anyone starts shooting.
A Quick Question.....How much was the Thermal Drone ??

Black bear are pretty harmless. Most of the time... Only have to really worry about a sow with cubs. We had a pile of them at camp. We used to bounce marshmallows off their faces and they would run off. They always came back for the mallow, but they were way more scared of us than we were of them. Like a big danger puppy 😂

Our local pd use thermal drones to search for people trying to hide in corn fields. That way it saves them a lot of time searching hundreds of acres. The drone plus k9 unit makes it almost too easy.

With the amount of caves on your property that bear may just be chilling in them which is why you never see him. Probably chills in the cool caves during the hot days then comes out to forage at night or like you said he was just moving through. But until you're certain I wouldn't go in any caves without a pew.

I've seen some others comment this too but I can't help myself and have to as well since I work with thermal cameras. You can use this during the day just fine. Using it during dawn and dusk you'll experience thermal cross over. To put it in simple terms everything is roughly the same temperature and just makes it harder to see. As far as picture settings use white hot for day time use and black hot for night time use. Makes everything look "normal". I could see tint being a good option but the rest of those I really wouldn't recommend for what your application.

that's the most respectable hunting point of view to have if getting a younger one in to it,
take the drone somewhere with a similar diversity to your ranch with known bears then you know what to look for on your property more repeatedly
