    CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Shug (Margaret Avery) watch as Nettie (Akosua Busia) reunites Celie (Whoopi Goldberg) with her son and daughter.
    FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker, The Color Purple spans the years 1909 to 1949, relating the life of Celie (Whoopi Goldberg), a Southern black woman virtually sold into a life of servitude to her brutal husband, sharecropper Albert (Danny Glover). Celie pours out her innermost thoughts in letter form to her sister Nettie (Akousa Busia), but Albert has been hiding the letters Nettie writes back, allowing Celie to assume that Nettie is dead. Finally, Celie finds a champion in the don't-take-no-guff Sofia (Oprah Winfrey), the wife of Glover's son from a previous marriage. Alas, Sofia is "humbled" when she is beaten into submission by angry whites. Later, Celie is able to forge a strong friendship with Albert's mistress Shug (Margaret Avery). Emboldened by this, Celie begins rifling through her husband's belongings and finds Nettie's letters. Able at last to stand up to her husband, Celie leaves him to search for a new life on her own. A major box-office hit, The Color Purple was nominated for eleven Oscars. The film was co-produced by Quincy Jones, who also wrote the score.

Whoopi really shines in this scene. She could have been much more overtly emotional, yet she seems to enter a kind of shock. Pretty awesome acting.

I always thought this was so realistic. When you have a real earth-shattering moment like this it's too false to cry at first...crying happens once things sink in and you know you aren't dreaming or psychotic.

I seriously don't understand how anyone could dislike this clip. It's just so touching, happiest part of the film--Celie got her sister and her family back, and numerous friends backing her. Couldn't ask for a better ending, Steven Spielberg (for a white guy putting together a movie centered around blacks) did an absolutely awesome job making this movie.

But in the book, he starts off life mad in love with Shug Avery, and then suddenly he just loses his spark after growing older. Shug Avery keeps him in her life, but after hearing that Albert beat Celie and his past women, moves on, and then marries another man. He basically is going to die alone, having no one by his side. He didn't nurture his kids and was a shitty father.

BUGGERATION2 He didn't suffer, no- not like Celie did all those years. But I think he realized just how much she did for him. After she leaves, he's alone. Harpo and Sofia get back together and were still very much a part of Celie's life. Squeek left with her and Shug. The only person that was technically fully on his side was his father, who Celie said that if Albert wasn't his son, he could have been a decent man. This finally registers with Albert when he throws his father out later on (after Celie left). Celie was the foundation of that household. He didn't realize that until it was too late.
I do feel that his reaction at the end was genuine. He didn't look "relieved," as if to say "Thank God that's over with." He seemed happy for Celine. He was proud of himself for righting his wrongs. At the end, I think it was more about wanting to fix everything for Celie after all she did for him.

I speak both Swahili and Lingála, they do not resemble at all. For example, Lingála is a tonal language (hence the accent on the 'a') and Swahili isn't (the emphasis is always on the last syllable); also when looking at grammar structures Lingála is much easier to learn then Swahili. Furtermore, they don't even have the same vocabulary. Example: "hello, how are you?" in Swahili: "Hujambo, habari gani?", but in Lingála: "Mboté na yó, ozalí malámu?

He doesn't say a word, but in his last close-up, Danny Glover can bring me to tears with his reaction. It is a look of genuine happiness for Celie and her family but he's also happy that he played a part in her happiness. Perhaps there is some redemption in store for him.

The last bit was sad. The moment Albert finally felt remorse for his ill treatment of Celie. Who was a truly beautiful soul. And in life its the people like that who are most vulnerable. They become prey to be trod on. Sad but true. But it was nice to see Albert realise that at last, and feel the pain of guilt in his heart. Great movie they all dererved Oscars.

I don't think that he did it to do good though. He was convinced that she had actually cursed him, 'Until you do right by me everything you think about is going to fail'. I think he was just trying to break what he thought was a curse. It was the right thing to do, but it was born out of selfishness.

He was part of a generational cycle of toxic masculinity. His father never changed. His son tried to be like him but realized how that had ruined him and Sophia and made a mess of his life. Albert does a lot of bad things but he is not the Devil. The "curse" was always in store for him with or without Celie's three fingers. His "breaking" the curse comes about when he acknowledges his son's happiness and works to reunite Celie with her kids. He comes to grips with the consequences of his toxic masculinity, and there is indeed hope for him as the narrative ends.

He got his ways from his father and Celie left him all alone he realized that he didn't want to end up like his father, old and grumpy. Whoopi Goldberg was uneqivocally robbed of the Academy Award for her magnetic performance in this splendid film!
I have watched Colour Purple more times than I have eaten hot dinners and the end result is usually the same - a 6'4" tall and 16 stone Englishman reduced to a blubbering wreck...everytime, without fail.
For a person not to feel moved by this thought-provoking, life-affirming and beautiful film, would mean that they have a swinging brick for a heart.

The first time I saw this movie I was visiting my Mom's house. (First TV broadcast, I think.) During the fight at the Juke Joint I thought that Spielberg had made a cartoon out of Alice Walker's book. It was such a farcical scene. But I kept watching. Turning point: Shug finds the letters and Celie reads the first one. Movie changed completely. By the time this reunion scene came around, I too was a blubbering wreck. It is a cinematic landmark. When Glover's character is seen walking with the horse I could barely say the words, "He was saved."

No.The only thing Celie did before leaving for Tennessee with Shug and Squeaks, was curse Albert for his actions. Eventually Albert did the right thing and brought Nettie home with her husband, Samuel and Celie's children.

In fact, all of the actors played their roles absolutely fantastic. I don’t know what the academy was on that night. But to nominate a movie 12 times and not win a single Oscar, well they must have been on dope, or something. Steven Spielberg was great putting together a great movie. So sad, so sad. 😔🙁

Ever since I first saw this incredible movie in 1985 and even seeing it again and again and latest in 2024 I still cry my eyes out at this scene..every single time.. especially seeing them pull up and their amazingly beautiful African dress outfits blowing in the wind..hear come the waterworks 😭😭😭...and I agree with some here..why this heart touching, magnificent acting by ALL, they should have, but sadly did not, sweep the academy awards! Just a travesty quite honestly..but that's ok ..the major actors ended up super stars and wealthy,.good for them..👍👏❤️ so God bless you Steven, Quincy and all the such gifted actors for this masterpiece that I know will go down as one of the best movies ever to hit the big screen and no doubt will be around for many many more generations to enjoy, cherish and love as much as I have for almost 45 years! 👏❤️

+Steven Sabal Grimsley One quick point on Walker, this was fiction but she had no good black men in this movie, or should I say her book, my friends tell me that lots of this sort of thing went on in the south with older men and younger women, okay I will grant that, although one could argue the amount of it that went on or goes on, but were there no good black men, I mean really, one gets the notion that she had some type of vendetta, then I went into the whole situation and things started to make a whole lot more sense coming from her point of view.

Steven Spielberg is Brilliant look at this scene, how he lets you not forget about mister or Albert, if you can remember his character is the one who allowed this reunion to be possible, I really like the close when the two women are playing their game, and Albert walks by in the background with his horse, classic Spielberg.

I cried when Olivia hugs Celie and is overwhelmed emotionally, choking back the tears as she cries in her mother's embrace. And when Albert is shown watching the reunion with a big smile on his face I cried even more. "He was saved!" I said... but no one around me understood what that meant. They still just saw him as the movie's heavy.
