    So basically Tarkin is the reason why the empire fucked up.

    • @asheer9114

      Tarkin was an overconfident idiot when he ordered to chase Falcon with lonely station and without waiting for support fleet.
      if DS would be protected by the fleet as was planned, resistance fighters would never reach her because they would be swarmed by countless TiEs not only from the ships but DS as well giving station enough time to position and fire on Yavin.

      Tarkin was wanting to know where the Rebel base was, that's why he ordered 4 TIEs fighters to chase the Millenium Falcon. He knew it was going to the Rebel base, which he would love to blow up.

      That was a huge argument many Imperial Officers had. They felt that it would decrease their own effectiveness and shift power away from them.

    • @girlgarde
      @girlgarde 7 ปีที่แล้ว +480

      Agreed. The Imperial Navy and Army both proved their effectiveness in keeping order and crushing Rebels in the Galactic Civil War when led properly such as in the Battle of Hoth as well as numerous naval engagements throughout the galaxy. In contrast, the Empire's superweapons only gave the Rebels openings to hurt the Empire's credibility by destroying them.
      Of course, the Super Star Destroyers could also be regarded as superweapons but they fall within the category of ships and were actually quite useful in showing off the Empire's military might while demoralizing their enemies.

    • @EscapeVelocity11186
      @EscapeVelocity11186 7 ปีที่แล้ว +230

      I think there was something in the EU that mentioned how many super star destroyers could have been built instead of the Death Stars, and given the effectiveness of the Executor (which only was destroyed due to the Emperor's incompetent orders), the extra firepower would've helped cement the Empire's hold on the galaxy for decades more.

      Hoodie i don’t agree with that at all. Despite a great head start (because the rest of Europe wasn’t ready for war) the Germans never really stood a chance of winning the war. The allies were superior in almost every way and once things stalled in ‘42 the war essentially ended. And seeing as the Germans are supposedly represented by the Empire I don’t think that analogy holds at all.

    Now that I think about it, destroying an entire planet full of Imperial citizens was one of the DUMBEST things Tarkin did, which means he's either grossly incompetent or so off his rocker that he's no longer fit for command. The fact that he's there in the first place shows just how incompetent and corrupt the empire itself really is, so it makes perfect sense that it drove more systems to defect than to stay.

    • @Wh40kFinatic
      @Wh40kFinatic 7 ปีที่แล้ว +172

      Not the Empire ITSELF. The Empire is about the ideals of discipline, unity and honor. Those core ideals are the true heart of the empire. The problem was that it was being led by terrible, corrupt people who used the Empire for their own ends, especially Palpatine. The fact that the Empire learned from its mistakes when the Imperial Remnant and Fel Empire were formed is testament to the truth of the Empire. Men come and go, but the Empire will live on.

      Palpatine wasn't shocked so much by the act itself, but by the fact that Tarkin blew up *Alderaan* of all places. He *did* give Tarkin the go-ahead to vaporize a planet to show off the Death Star's power, but he probably expected him to destroy some backwater Outer Rim planet. The destruction of Alderaan was the single *dumbest* thing Tarkin ever did, and Tarkin was kind of a dumbass to begin with; His only major contribution to warfare was the Tarkin Doctrine, which heavily relied on preventing rebellion with fear and intimidation. But after Alderaan, people joined the Rebellion by the *thousands,* which completely rendered the Tarkin Doctrine moot.

      no, he's talking about from a story point, and I completely agree with him 100%. the whole exploded unicorn is just a clusterfuck storytelling wise. everything's part of this big grand scheme, no main characters die EVER, all of star wars in the eu is pretty much bad fanfiction, save a few good writers that can actually do a decent plot. even the thrawn trilogy was kind of awful with them cloning darth vader and the emperor "just because". nothing really ever moves forward and is just kind of the same with cycles of empires rebellions and republics because plot security blankets. don't get me started on how out of place the usawn whatever the fucks were. I think they added those stupid H.R. Giger elements of "living ships" in because it was the 80's and everything had to have H.R. Giger in it because of aliens, even though it completely clashed with ray Bradbury's original designs for how the universe looked and felt. I could honestly go on for hours on how much I didn't like the star wars eu. if you like it fine, I'm just explaining why I didn't.

      It would make sense if the rebels had 10m+ all the way to billions because they were underfunded and desperate . I can understand the empire having a low standing army though, they have supertech and planetary weapons. Not too mention in that time warfare was done by spacecraft you don't need as many boots on the ground. You rock up to a system with a fleet of star destroyers and thats it they either immediately surrender or perish. So yea maybe the low number count is a tradeoff for the money spent on tech.

      Leia at this point in her career is a hardened strategist and rebel. Her background is that she's the youngest Senator in the history of the Republic or the Empire, and has been using the Tantive IV as a blockade runner for years. Right in the same film, prior to this scene, she's withstood Imperial torture, mind probes, stood up to Darth Vader himself, insulted Tarkin to his face *after* being tortured. And upon being freed from her cell she takes charge of the ragtag pack of idiots who've come to rescue her and more or less leads them out of the most high-security Imperial fortress in the galaxy. She's resilient, strong, capable, always putting the greater good ahead of her own personal desires, knowing - and saying, on screen itself - that there's no time for sorrows. i.e. she is doing everything that classic male protagonists used to do in every film of this kind *until* Star Wars came along. i.e.e. she is a feminist in every sense of the word.
      And you have the gumption to whine about the fact she didn't get any 'tears time'?

In the New Hope Radio Drama, when Alderaan was destroyed, Leia broke down right there, versus the cut to Obi-Wan and his famous line. Then, while Tarkin is gloating over a successful field test and Vader acknowledges the power of the Death Star, Leia essentially tells him that he and those aboard the Death Star were inhuman “things” and the Empire was now at war with “Life itself” and the universe (read: the Galaxy).

      The notable thing is that both Darth Vader, Grand Admiral Thrawn, and a few other imperial leaders who didn't have their heads up their asses outright opposed the creation of the Death Stars from day one. They viewed it as a wast of resources and believed that the could have spent them on making ships, armor, weaponry, and other technology. This is even represented in the films "The ability to destroy a planet is insignificant next to the power of the force."
      Basically they thought "Why are we making these useless things when we could have used what we made them with to create entire fleets and armies?" While the second Death Star had it more so than the first, ultimately, both Death Stars lacked versatility, and the previous people mentioned viewed them as waste of resources.

    I'd love to see a movie exploring the aftermath of Alderaan's and the Death Star's destruction and the interim years between Episode 4 and 5. I think a film showing those planets rising up and pushing off the empire would be awesome. It could show how the Rebel Alliance transformed into "a force to be reckoned with." I could imagine the inhabitants of these worlds seizing Imperial weapons and fleets on their worlds to go toe to toe with the empire, and hopefully see battles of a similar scale shown in Episode 3. One can always enjoy a scene showing a full scale, apocalyptic battle going on on land and in space in Star Wars.

      jon ratsey I think both would be a great idea, but I'd prefer live action rather than a cartoon for the film. The one gripe I've got with the TV shows is that they often lack the action and unbridled grit the movies show. They're made too kid friendly, not enough blood and graphic, gripping deaths to seem believable. Think how sad people feel when seeing the Ewoks killed in Episode 6- that kind of stuff is needed, imo, to make the franchise more gripping. It was originally made like a soap opera, after all, and emotions and story are key (as well as believable action scenes).

      jon ratsey Good point. But I don't expect them to make a trilogy on something like that to be honest. I feel they'd do one, maybe two standalone's- even if the potential were there to do a dozen films on just one niche of the Galactic Civil War. The current understanding is that Disney is looking to do stand alone's on individual, significant stories outside of the main story line being explored in the three trilogies. But I would certainly love a plethora of movies exploring the other stories of the war and the more 'average' battles and experiences.

    Here's how the Empire could have explained Alderaan's destruction without being as subtle as a chainsaw to the crotch: The Death Star's target was a remote corner of the planet, simply to demonstrate the power of the Death Star to the Galaxy as a whole. The superlaser was only at absolute minimum power, again simply a demonstration. However, the chosen target just happened to be a massive underground weapons and munitions stockpile. Among these were, upon later examination, several grams of antimatter. This proves that Princess Leia was, in fact, a complete and utter liar and nothing more than a traitor.

    Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis "the wise"? I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life... He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful... the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. It's ironic he could save others from death, but not himself.

      TheS1E2A3L4 not necessarily, the nearby planets orbit the nearest sun, not Alderan, but the debris could have damaged other planets if they crossed paths, basically a meteor coming towards them, but that didn't happen, so in short, no.

    • @goldenhedgehog9

      Clumsy0015 To be fair though, there are more suns than just our. Other planets orbit suns in their systems, so saying solar system isn't necessarily wrong, but it technically is. And at the same time, our sun is a star, so wouldn't we also be considered a star system.

    I've noticed on these videos that a lot of the population facts ('thousands joined the rebel alliance' etc) seem way off to me. Star wars is based in a huge galaxy with hundreds (if not thousands) of inhabited planets. I would assume that planets such as Courscant or any other city planets would have on the numbers of trillions of individuals, and least populated planets like Jakku or Hoth would have in the hundreds of thousands. With this it's simple to assume there are maybe a couple hundred trillion or a couple quadrillion beings in this galaxy- and that's just the planets taken into account, not to mention moons, asteroids, space bases etc. So something like a couple thousand rebels or a couple million clones really doesn't add up. Imagine this: 15 million clones spread about 5000 locations across the galaxy- that leaves 3000 per location. That's a very very small amount.

    • @weberman173
      @weberman173 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      15 Million Clones would be nice.. we only had 3!!!!!! MILLION

    • @zombieshoot4318
      @zombieshoot4318 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes. That's a major problem in all of Sci-Fi worlds. Even Star Trek. But looking at Star Wars it's crazy. It's like no one does math. Let's assume for the sake of doing easy math that there are 1 Quadrillion beings in the Star Wars galaxy. That's a 1 followed by 15 zeroes. If even 1/2 of 1 percent (.005) join the rebel cause that is FIVE TRILLION PEOPLE.
      Clearly Star Wars has a major math problem. The population is so huge that realistically the Empire should have never lost. Just through sheer numbers it should be unstoppable. Imagine the Empire has 2% of the total population in uniform and that is 20 trillion people.

    Good video, I like the irony that the destruction of Alderaan caused the mass uprising against the Empire that Tarkin initially sought to prevent by building the Death Star in the first place.Did you ever see my previous comments on a 'What If" scenario involving the Empire winning the Galactic Civil War, and how Palpatine and Vader would have dealt with eventual extra-galactic Vong invasion in the Legends timeline.

  • @VanishEclipse4867
    @VanishEclipse4867 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    So in a way, while showing the galaxy what the Empire is capable of, they have basically became the architects of their own destruction as by destroying Alderaan which is a key figure among the Empire at the time, they have unknowingly made the Rebel Alliance stronger and it was only made worst when Tarkin and the first Death Star was destroyed. You know it is bad news if even Palpatine himself was not expecting Tarkin to destroy Alderaan in an attempt end the Rebels. Tarkin's attempt to multitask went wrong. This only gave the galaxy a proper reason to bring an end to the Galactic Empire.
