Make a suggestion on your recall spring I use a 13/16 spark plug socket cut a groove vertical in the socket hook the inner part of the spring wind it up around the socket holding the spring slide it off the socket with the needle nose hold it together then you can set it in place. I grew up in a time when 2stroke ríce burners were Everywhere and so very much miss them . Have a nice Zanoah G430RC on my bicycle . Love everything 2stroke
I like the 490. I always wanted a CR500. I had a Banshee that was wicked. It was 472cc. I loved to listen to it idle (kind of like 2 big husqvarnas strapped together). I'm pushing 40 and already with rotator cuff surgery and various plates and screws. Had to get rid of it. Now I putt around in a 1952 willys flatfender jeep. Fab willy style
It needs plastic bushings. That is why it has slop. There is no pre load on the return spring either. Keep up the good work Tinman. I've picked up a lot of tricks off ya. I have a 1977 Yamaha IT 400 sitting in my Shop. Peace
I did three of these from watching bellhoppers videos and he has awsome knowledge and info but visually this is a stellar video nice job! Neat bike too.
I just did???funny and tore down piston cylinder completly, for first time .GOD WAS helping because if I ran it one more time it would've blown..it was caked with carbon..from that carb ..it only has low and blocker on it. Didn't see any damage on low end hopefully and very light heat marks on piston no scoring but light scoring on cylinder..did not have dremnel or way to remove it.??so soaked it and wiped it.praying for the best. .thanks for all you guys videos..
Hi Tinman!!😀😀 You are one of the first guys I have seen that put the spring in the proper way. So many people try to wind them up in their hands and then drop them in witch is just about impossible. I had a old small engine mechanic show me the right way probably 35 years ago after I was fighting with them the wrong way. Take care my friend!!😀😀 Logger Al

I love the old chainsaws but I love the old two stoke dirt bikes an I rebuilt a yz490 an iv done a honda 450 elsinore an you gotta love the big boar monsters an I agree an taking an cleaning the recoil spring getting in the tight spots an cleaning the crud really dose extended the life of the old saws.love the vid always a good time to sit down an watch you're vids an buckins
That bike is sweet! Thanks for the recoil vid. I have been messing with the recoil on my Homelite XL 12 the last couple of nights and it just does not want to cooperate! I usually have my buddy do mine and I do his carb work. It’s a nice trade.

You need to fix that broken screw Tinman. Getting a broken drill bit out is always a rewarding challenge when done. Left hand carbide drill bits often works to back out a broken bolt, taps or bit out. That would drive me crazy leaving that in there. Have a good day, thanks for all your help. Be Safe
Job well done sir! I've had old outboard motor rewind springs that have given me fits when I was just starting out in the early 70's. But if you use your noggin, you can figure out a safe way to get the job done every time.
I've ridden a 82 yz490 . Crazy fast bike. I had the 81 IT465 also high compression. Best thing I ever did to it was simply add a second head gasket. Calmed that pinging right down.
The issue with those old big bore 2-Stroke bikes, is the bugs you get in your teeth while riding! Hard to keep from grinning when they are on the pipe and you are ripping through the gears. 😁
Not that close but back in the mid '80's I had one of the last Yamaha STREET 2 strokes, the RZ 350. It was great after i put the Toomey Race Kit on it.
Nice bike, my dream bike when I was a wee lad was the IT 490. It would have killed me if if I had gotten my hands on one at 13, and sooo much compression, I had to push start the old DT250 after a bruised calf incident scarred me mentally. HAha. Ambition does not equal ability.

How about just putting a decomp valve in the bike? You’re bound to have some laying around. I know that your video is 9mo, but I had to put my 2 cents in for a comment. You might even figure out a way (IF you want) to revisit the bike in a upcoming vid. Just sayin

..I often have problems with the starter dog shaft being tight and binding with the split nylon bushing that goes in there for some reason, even when the hole, bushing, and shaft are clean, oiled, and in good condition...anybody else have that issue?...I noticed that I didn't see the nylon bushing in this video...BTW, if you couldn't care less about motorcycles(like me), skip ahead to 3:50 on this video....
Come on you can kick a pan head over. This should be cake walk. I love the hard ones kick over. But when you have them dial in . Some prime kicks and should pop right off. Lucky you I love have a 500 yamaha. I had abt every brand when was younger. And I was the crazy 16 kid that loved run 500 bikes.

Note to anyone I have found these recoil springs on Amazon remanufactured version and worked well

My housing does not do the recoil from top. The inside has a tin protector and I can not attach the old recoil.
All that time and energy into that saw and you dont replace the starter cord
