Here's something a little different, a blindfold tone test, not for us but for you guys watching at home!
We're taking John's original 1962 Fender Stratocaster and comparing it to a new Custom Shop '59 model. Same rig, same delicious Two Rock Bloomfield Drive amp and some super cool licks!
This isn't intended to be a comprehensive tone test, just a great way of highlighting the incredible quality of Fender Custom Shop guitars!

Strat 1 Custom Shop- Strat 2 Vintage (sounds a tad more fuller, warmer,raunchier,Just a hair more of everything)...
Both sound identical! Could have been the same one for all I can tell. Awesome playing! Really enjoy your videos!
I can't say which is which, but I definitely liked the sound of strat #1 better. To my ears the tone of #1 sounded more vibrant, fuller than #2, which had a thinner, less livelier tone. Looking forward to seeing which is which!
Strat 1 is the custom shop.
Strat 2 the 62 original. Those ancho's have a massive output
wrong, guitar 2 is the huge necked "bohemoth"
Start 1 sounds way better to me

Reason strat 2 has more output.
BTW what is the weight of the vintage 62 and body wood?
I liked strat 1, personal choice. Does anyone know which one was which?
1 is the vintage 2 is the custom shop. For two reasons:
1. You can identify the guitars by the machine head positions.
2. The 2nd guitar had a tremolo which the CS also had in the introduction.
As far as preference, I think i preferred no.1

@@robdig1919 i don't find the strat2 better at all. I like how open and clear the first one sounds. I like 60s strat pickups better
yeah as soon as he went to the blindfold i noticed the bent tuning peg and while they do this a lot on the cs strats i did a quick rewind and noticed the cs had straight pegs. that said they both sound great. is one worth 4x the other? maybe maybe not lol I guess it really comes down to which one feels more comfortable and or which one you have the cash for.

They both sound amazing, my guess is Strat 1 is the custom shop, any vintage Strat I’ve played has felt amazing to play, it’s as much about the feeling as the sound, great vid
I would say based on less than a couple mintues with the clean tones only, that Strat 1 would be vintage based because it has less lower mids and bass. My guess is the custom shop pickups have more bass in them.
Strat 2 seems to have a wider neck so it's the Custom Shop?
Strat 2 to me is the vintage one. Results?
Gtr1- custom shop, gtr2- vintage. The second one sounds warmer and "sweeter" if you will, but the first one sounds more usable for live music to me. Maybe some heavier pole staggering and lower output in guitar 1? They both sound fantastic.
The strat 1 (vintage) sounds full and warm compare to the custom Shop (Strat 2) I didn't expect that much difference. Were the pickups in 59 and 62 the same ?
All strats have there own 'thing' they look the same but there all different that why I love them and own stacks. Both of them sound awesome
Unfortunately I could tell which one was which by the sillhoette of the tuning pegs. I won’t spoil it for you though!

LOL.. 🙊🧐 I'm about to drive 3.5 hours round trip to pickup a Fender Custom Shop 1959 Strat. I was hoping to see the results before this day came.. Oh well, I'll have a CS 59 soon to try for my self.
what was the second one?
I have no idea which was which. I preferred #2 for the cleans at the start and #1 for the crunch and overdriven sounds. Couldn't choose between them on the improv but I would choose #1. At my level of playing though the guitar would be wasted.
Strat Nr. 1 ist the vintage (the original) 62' Strat and Nr. 2 is the 59' Custom Shop Strat!!
Now I am waiting for your video with the result!
Strat 1 has more output and has a little less chime to my ears; I'm saying Custom Shop
Strat 2 less output, more chime; original 62

I really hope Strat 1 is the custom shop because it sounds immense, but I'm guessing that's the vintage?
For starters, I preferred 1. Now, as far as if it was vintage, I will say that I had initially thought that guitar 2 was the older one until I read the description of the pickups and changed my mind.
I also appreciate some legitimately longer clean sections.
BTW I will say I very much doubt I could pick my own strats out of a blind test but I still like them all the same.

The Custom Shop 59 sounds actually a bit better if I picked the right one. The 62 sounds just a touch thinner in some areas and I like a little deeper tone in the 59. Would have been nice to know which amp you were playing through. Great comparison video
You still haven't posted the which guitar was which have you?

1 is the customshop and 2 is vintage. You can see where the tuning pegs are aligned from the top of the video reflected in the silhouette

Bro I love youe amp but great comparison video this is an actual real comparison right here alot of people compare guitars that arent even close to alike and its like wtf there different and made differently for different sounds and tones like something good with hard rock metal against somrthing thats better with blues it just makes no sense lol but this was great good video man I liked them both overall and the amp again is just amazing

Both sound fantastic, but that tone is all Two-Rock. You could take a cheap Squier and it'd sound amazing, I'm sure. Great playing by the way :)

If anyone is wondering which is which after watching the video then here it is.
Strat #1 is the vintage strat 62
Strat #2 is the custom shop 59
how i THINK i figured this out is in the preview the 62 low E tuning peg is straight, and when he plaus strat 1 it is also straight.
I prefer the sound of the second one, for sure.
strat 1 is the vintage. It has liveliness and does sing. Strat number 2 just sounds like how all new strats sound. If i am wrong and strat 1 is the customshop i would immediately buy strat 1, but i am convinced there are no strats made with that tone anymore since mid 60's.
They sound both fantastic, but I like the sound of the strat 1 one

Strat 2 is the vintage one.. sounded more “airy” on overdrive and crunch.. both beautiful sounding.. those pablanos sound HUGE on Strat 1... god I hope i am right! Lol

they're both in the upper echelon of amazing sounding guits. We're missing half of the impact via video, since we can't physically feel the guitar resonating and everything else that can't be duplicated when not in the actual room. so yea, they both sound good and different from one another - just like two vintages would
The Strat 1 is the Custom Shop, The Strat 2 is the Vintage.
They sounds closer but the Vintage one has a warmer tone, sweet but also punchy; love it
Well if I had to guess I would say that they’re both Stratocasters 😁
Hint: One has bent tuner buttons and the other has a thicker neck. ;)
My guess Strat 1: ´62original vintage Strat. Strat 2: ´59 Custom Shop. I hear more top end in the first one, and given the fact that the CS is equipped with Ancho Poblano pickups, which are overwound, my guess is the darker sounding strat is the custom shop... Anyhow both sound great...
#1 vintage (sounds more open e dynamic) #2 CS more flat, dark and compress
Hence the .1 cap on a pre-cbs...other way around buddy

@@GCKelloch thank you for your long explanation lol. But regardless of tone / volume knob...switching from .47 to a .1 is gonna make the whole sound fatter, thicker, spoungier in any position...anyways let’s just agree to disagree.
@@GCKelloch all this explanation flex is frivolous...it absolutely affects tone even when it’s on 10. Go watch “Dylan talks tone / capacitor video” not only did mine give the same results, he switches from tone capacitor and goes through all the tone positions. the sound is substantially warmer/brighter when he is switching from different capacitors...on tone 10.
. “Confirmation Bias” lol...you’re telling me, if I have a .22uf capacitor on 10 and I switch it out to .1uf capacitor there is gonna be absolutely no tone difference when the knob is on 10?

Strat 2 would sound more like 1 if you were to also deck the trem with 5 springs. And also play it for a few years. Then it would be pretty hard to tell. I could hear spongy attack in strat 2 and even a cricket flutter in the twang notes. I do like a floating trem at times.

Strat 1 = Original '62. I prefer the sound of Strat 1. Both guitars sound fantastic. The Two-Rock Amp is the true winner here. Wow!
Nice comparison!! I think no.1 is vintage. Because I prefer clean tone of No.1 on neck PU to No.2. I have got a custom shop 60 reissue made in around 2008. This is absolutely my main electric guitar. I have bought 5 Fender strat so far.
Don't know which is which but I like Strat 2 much better. Less harsh highs and more balanced eq.
This was a piece of cake The vintage strat was played first The custom shop was second of course. I do have to say listening on TH-cam makes it tougher but can't miss the vintage strat Now let me go find the reveal video
I like the modern Custom Shop and AV2’s as much as anything they’ve ever done. Although, they’re obviously going to start becoming heavier and heavier. The days of a 6.5lb Stratocaster is over.
If you would really like to make a good comparisson, then take the original 62 and compare it to a CS with black bottom pickups. And i will say that Strat 2 is the original 62 one.
Strat 2 definitely Ancho Poblano PUs...because I have it to in my CS strat and I LOVE IT!)

Mine is Postmodern with 2016 specs..Ancho Poblanos and mid 60s neck, 6105 frets...then you had also Ancho Poblano strat with the same PUs, but bigger neck&frets..and this strat in 2018 also with the same PUs..
Start 2 must be the old one, lower output, more clarity
I would say 1 is the CS Strat as it seems to have higher output pickups. Guitar 2 sounds nice for clean tones but it's lacking something during the OD sections.

I like the sound of #2 the best. If I had to guess, I would probably say #1 is the Vintage and #2 is the custom shop.

The guesses in the comments are an even split. Being honest with myself, I can hear differences but have no clue how they would indicate a vintage over any other guitar. Past a certain decent level of craftsmanship, I think a strat will sound like a strat. Especially on a recording. Playability may be a different story but I think the principle is the same. A vintage strat with a worse set up than the custom shop will throw you off on playability. I'm therefore frustrated at the misguided notion that more money always buys better sound. Far too many variables for money to ever be an influence. The best guitar is the one that you sound the best on!
I know this is 5 years old, but i just stumbled upon it. I can see how some might think they sound identical, but to my ears Strat #1 is the better sounding guitar. It just has more top end sparkle and sounds more dynamic (to my ears). Please tell me #1 is the Custom shop, but I seriously doubt that's the case.

i have been playing strats for 50 years, but my opinon he first had more pop maybe custom shop...but all in all i had a 66 sirat that sounded better than my 57 so it's a toss up for me

Strat 1 = 62’ vintage; Strat 2 = 59’ Custom Shop.
Strat 1 sounds a little thinner/aged/sweeter. Strat 2 sounds thicker and muffled. I have a WW 10 strat with John Cruz pickups and they sound similar to strat 2. Also you played more soulfully with Strat 1. It seemed as though you had to work harder to coax the tones from Strat 2.
1Vintage / 2 CS
No 1 sounds stellar. I'm guessing it's the vintage one. More even frequency response, less boomy and weaker output. Very very dynamic
I thought that 1st was Custom SHop, but watching at tuning keys from behind, it seems i was wrong ;) Original '62 sounds brighter. Personally i prefer '59 Custom Shop.
Strat 1 is I’m guessing the new Custom shop. Strat 2 sounds a bit less powerful sounding. Funny, I preferred Strat 2 in the first clip but Strat 1 in almost all the other clips.
They both sounded great, and I think that’s the point you’re trying to make. Fender still makes great sounding guitars that you can actually buy.
That clean tone sounded distorted!
Jeez that amp is pushing $6k. How much better is that than a Deluxe Reverb really?
