If a boy has parents who are so focused on him becoming a stereotypical "masculine" man, they will encourage some behaviors, and discourage others, to the point of threatening or punishing them ("Stop crying like a girl!"). Do this enough to a kid, and he learns quickly that he needs to stuff his feelings. But, just because a man was raised that way, doesn't mean he has to stay that way.
