Please, please do NOT be offended by people falling asleep to your storytelling… you have no idea what a gift that can be . In my own case, if I am lucky enough to fall asleep I ALWAYS re-visit your stories to hear them to the end. It is testament to your voice that you can ease an over-active mind to sleep. Be proud of that ability! 😴

My husband was dyslexic, and I would read my books out loud to him. It was a lovely thing we shared. He's gone now, and it's nice to have someone read to me. Thank you for this. This is one of my favorite authors. 🌹

I see the husband as Persephone, not Charlotte. He is lured away from the ones whom he loves and is stolen away to the underworld (albeit still alive, as was Persephone). Charlotte becomes Demeter who will search for her loved one. Kenneth's mother is Hekate, who will accompany Demeter on her search for "Persephone." The dead wife is Hades. The question is whether he will have to remain in the underworld--whatever form that takes.
Narrated by a master of the speaking voice.

Intriguing story. To be the second wife of a widower who was much in love with the first wife. Fancy life style well narrated by the writer. Feel sorry for Charlotte. But where does the letters come from. It's like a reminder to the man that he can't be happy in his second marriage.
I cannot even try to go to sleep without a story from Tony and if I fall asleep halfway through, I get to listen to the rest of it another night so two for the price of one😂❤
Your commentaries add so much depth to the stories for me. I like the way they don’t tell me how to think about them, but let me see you chasing them down
This was the first time I have seen you narrating. It was a pleasant surprise. You look very serious, but that's to be expected given the material. I don't think many people come Edith Wharton for a good laugh. You have a camera, why not? Branching out and exploring is good and curiosity is satisfied. People who don't like it generally don't like themselves. As long as you like it, that's all that's really needed.

Engrossing, gripping narration, visuals enhancing your fantastic story-telling. Your British accent is perfect for the story, which feels more English than American. Worth waiting up for. Think I will watch it again now on the bigger tv screen.

I love how you are explaining the deeper meaning of her stories. She is definitely a fantastic writer of symbolism like Hardy and D.H. Lawrence. I'm reading some analysis of her story "The Bunner Sisters." That's another great story of hers and there's so much more of a deeper meaning than what's actually in the story. She is so good at keeping you in suspense in her works.

Sometimes those of us who listen while falling asleep listen more. I sometimes listen while falling asleep, sometimes don't, but did with this one, restarting it a couple times at the last bit l heard so I don't miss anything. I always like your discussions, particularly in this case, since the connection to Persephone puzzled me.
"The Pomegranate Seed"(1931) is an excellent and very classic mystery Ghost story by a Master of this kind:Edith Wharton!
One gets really engrossed in this story. Brilliant writing and also narrating. You actually feel the empathy for all the characters in this….. even of Elise

That title was driving me crazy. I remember the story of Persephone being abducted by Pluto but forgot the bit about the pomegranate seeds which keep her hooked to the world of the dead. It's a thin and faint link but unbreakable all the same.

I was thrown for a loop until I looked it up and saw the refernce back to the Greek stories.
I love how Edith Wharton wrote the story around the Greek stories and did not outwardly explain it to us. I heard "Call the police" and realized I need to do a little research!
I listen to these stories in bed at night and sometimes they follow me into my dreams. This was one which did, to quite sinister effect. A terrific read of a really wonderful story. Edith must have been wonderful company!

The accents really are part of the phrasing and when I have a story, say an Irish or Scottish or Australian story and I do it in my normal voice, it doesn't feel right.

In some ways this story shares a lot with Ethan Fromme, in that the husband craves light andd life but cant escape his negative wife who maintains a hold on him.

I realized after this, my 2nd listen to this brilliant offering of literature, that I had neglected to comment after my 1st listen a year or more ago. I'm suffering from a brutal bout of insomnia so I decided to revisit Ms Wharton while waiting for the 3rd installment of Hill House. As you may know, at the top of the list of my favorite female writers are Shirley Jackson and Harper Lee. I am beginning to think Edith Wharton might come in at #3. The more I pay close attention to details perhaps missed on previous reads or listens, the more I've come to appreciate the brilliant nuances and seemingly less important details that later show themselves as anything but. Every word has it's own deliberate job, and each is masterful at delivering an overall creeping anxiousness and an almost unbearable expectation. Thank you for bringing these gems to life...and I personally very much enjoy when you read on camera. It's like having a friend or family member reading you a bedtime story. Thank you my friend, for all the time, effort and obvious caring you put into every offering. 💜

@@ClassicGhost Well the obvious yet cliche answer is we're never too old to learn. We only stop when we either die or go mad. I believe you're far from both, so if you want it badly enough....I would think it's more a matter of having or making the time. With your jobs here and there, family and other general commitments it might not be easy. For me, the worst times in my life have been when I haven't any goals or desires strong enough to actually step up and pursue. When fighting my demons becomes a fulltime job. But I'm betting you could make it happen. 💜

The mysterious letters that arrive remind me of the short story "The Storm" by McKnight Malmar. Not a ghost story, but a thriller that is probably my favorite short story of all time.
I fall asleep to your narrations, but that’s to your credit. You successfully drive out of my mind all of the thoughts that usually keep me awake. I like to listen again during the daytime so that I get to enjoy the whole story. Double the views for you! You’re one of my favourite narrators, by the way. You’re very good at it. "In the very heart of the hurricane, she had found her tiny eyelet!" Now that's such a fantastic metaphor or simile (I don't know which exactly). The authors around the turn of the century are write so vividly and poetically! This isn't just a short story, THIS IS ART!!! beautiful!!!

You are a grait story teller grait Narrator! I am dyslexic who loves to read but with grait difficulties I find that funny but there it is, being able to listen to a story is much more enjoyable and less frustrating..helps me switch of and tune witch for me is important as i can visualise..

Oh, my goodness! I just got an ad! Did you finally put ads back in?? I really hope you have. It seems the height of audacity to ask you to go through all this trouble for us and then begrudge you an extremely reasonable attempt to make a bit of money off of it. It’s the tiniest inconvenience, and it’s the absolute LEAST any of us could do to have a 5 second, skippable ad occasionally. Can anyone against the ads give me any good argument to ask him to remove the ads that doesn’t sound ridiculously selfish and ungrateful??

as to falling asleep... yes, that is troubling. as a child attending classical music concerts, i often fell asleep. a truly enlightened teacher who took us, a class of fifth graders to the concert hall, was not offended. of course, music and stories are different in that regard. and i am guilty of falling asleep. but the GREAT ASPECT of these stories is that they can be painlessly repeated. i ALWAYS return and listen the next day when i am more alert. thank you for these wonderful recordings.

Well I don’t know, I suppose times have changed greatly. If I was in her place, I wouldn’t hesitate for a moment, I’d grab that letter and open it. If I had let things get to this state, I’d just grab it, or failing that, I’d pack my bag and leave instantly. He’s playing with her love and life!

Ireally enjoyed this story, Tony - thank you very much! Because of the language, I thought it was set in England, so it was quite a shock when New Jersey was mentioned. Thanks also for your Afterword. I had already clocked the link to the Demeter and Persephone myth but it was interesting to hear your take on it. I was surprised that it ended the way it did - but she was right to leave it there. I must admit, if I were Charlotte, once she realised about Elsie, I'd have been straight off to the cemetery, expecting to find my husband laying dead by Elsie's grave! Wharton reminds me of how much we've lost ,- in thought, perception, communication.I often consider the myth of evolution these days; unavoidable, given what's going on in Western culture.Wharton would appreciate the irony of all our " advances".
