I cannot imagine that you would want to hear MY personal musings on my family, or my desires to have a dog or cat live together. if I was reading you a story, and doing so as well as you do, I think you would just wnat to enjoy the story for itself . Perhaps the personal material could be on a separate website. Your reading led me to want to know more about Gaskell. it took me five minutes to find out that Gaskell published this in January of 1861, and not the 1880s as you said, and also that she was known for injecting her extensive travel experiences . If I could find all of this afte r five minutes of casual research, I would think you would also have been aware of these basic facts, especially considering all the work you put into your readings. As I said, since you are an EXCELLENT reader, you might wish to concentrate more on that, rather than spending so much time commenting on things not directly relevant to the stories themselves. Wow. This story. Quite an adventure. Every time I listened I somehow fell asleep in the beginning about the rain and painting. Very exciting, but I’m too nervous for their disguises. Because his subs and patrons love the background material, almost as much as his personal insights & anecdotals- and are kinda like his friends… 3. And, perhaps most significantly, because TH-cam will literally demonitize his channel, despite these being in the public domain- unless he “adds transformative creative value or commentary” (or some such Digital Copyright legalese). Tony is also an excellent researcher, and we are all entitled to a mistake, every so often. Just thought you might like to know. Cheers
Tony, I’m listening to this just over 2 years after it was posted, and I just want you to know how much I needed to hear your message “what if it’s all ok.” - even if just now while listening to you (quite literally in the bath soaking after being up all night with chronic gastrointestinal issues on the heels of two weeks of migraines and tension headaches and some very rough therapy sessions recently addressing childhood cptsd). I also listened earlier today, by pure chance, to your recording of The House of the Dead Hand, and again I needed to hear what you had to say about childhood psychology. Just perfect. My point is, never feel like your musings are unimportant or unappreciated. You never know how they’ll hit someone across the world and long after you’ve left them. Hope your headache improves! I used to have migraines myself but in the 5 years since my ear piercing I have only had 2. I don’t know if this works for everyone but it’s worth a try. There is a name for this particular type of piercing but if you Google migraine piercing it will quickly pop up! ***just curious which DLS novel were you going to listen to again? I love her & dear Agatha Christie.
@@Bambisgf77 Clouds of Witnesses. I just relistened to Busmans Holiday again, which is fabulous. But honestly, Clouds of Witnesses, Strong Poison, and The Nine Tailors are the best. Of course, Busmans Holiday is great too. But that's the last one in the series, so I wouldn't listen to that without at least listening to Strong Poison and Gaudy Night first. The most clever I think is the Nine Tailors.

That was so good! I thought it quite modern and easy to follow. Love the analysis. Ursula should marry her love because she was innocent of murdering the potential father in law. I so enjoyed that! I love Mrs Gaskell's novels and her biography of Charlotte Bronte, but I'd not read that short one before. I love the first part which, as you say, must have been a real trip out for coffee with friends. I like to think of Mrs Gaskell sitting there (before the rain came down) thinking up her story. I was posted in Germany for a couple of years and loved it, especially the south and (what was) East Germany. I remember a trip we took across the defunct border and suddenly tarmac gave way to cobbles and there we were in medieval Europe. Very surreal. Thank you so much for posting this. Good luck with Woman in Black, one of my favourite Susan Hill novels.
I love Elizabeth Gaskell. This was great, even though there were no ghosts in it :) It had enough gothic elements to keep me happy ;) On a more serious note, in the early stages (before the revelation of the husband's true nature), Gaskell gives what could be a completely modern rendering of a marriage blighted by coercive control.
Ok, I missed this first time around. But I am so glad that I picked it up now ( a year later ). Great work Tony, the whole thing played like a black and white movie for me and helped me through a TON of ironing that it self seems to have been waiting a year to get through. The story, and your telling kept me gripped and focused on my task and even helped me grasp the meaning at the end; necessary for someone with a limited span of attention. Thanks. 🐈🐕😊

For me this is the most difficult type of story for me to figure out how I feel about it. Because the story itself was wonderful but, I loathe the main character. I just listened to this right after listening to "Sandman" and I detested the main character of that story as well. However, (and you can correct if I'm wrong Tony) I believe we were not supposed to like the protagonist of "The Sandman" but, I think we were supposed to view the Gray woman as a tragic hero. But it's really hard to feel completely sorry for someone whose circumstances came about due to her own inability to stand up for herself. Maybe during the time period this was written a beautiful meek (weak-willed) woman was someone to be desired but, not now. Again excellent story but I prefer a hero or heroine whom I can rally behind and empathize with.
Just finished listening to this in one chunk and early on thought, What a great narrator!! The added bonus was the structural analysis and then personal chat at the end! Thank you for a great evening!
**Reveals Plot - don’t read before listening! i didn’t find anything weird about this story. it worked incredibly fine. why does a story need to be a certain formula? doesn’t seem to give an author the freedom to write the kind of story he or she would prefer to write. i loved this story - it has compassion, it’s pretty scary, there’s quite a bit of sadness, has a really good plot with twists, and the right ending. the man whose wife was murdered so very wantonly should get him in the end. (as to the murder if the wife, i thought La chauffer had simply gone into the room in the early dawn and did the deed without looking. blond hair would have sufficed.) our little mother lives as happy a life as she could, having been drained almost to death by fear. she is taken care of by the lovely doctor. it’s just really too bad, the author felt she had to let Amant (sp?) go. you read this so well - i even thought you had a slight Austrian accent in the beginning. guess your just really good with accents :) oh - and thanks for letting us know who the kid was whom the daughter couldn’t marry. lost track of that. so much for a short comment :) thank you again 🌷🌿🌼🌱🌷

Great the whole way through! And a note on the corks in the cheeks- supposedly for playing the Godfather, Marlon Brando stuffed cotton in his mouth/jaw. Imagine the hours and hours of filming like that, every take done a dozen times, whew! And that's only a commitment to his craft, I'm sure a commitment to avoiding your own murder life could push a person to handle it lol
Really enjoyed this story. A great rollicking adventure as you say. Yes glaring fault re Taylor v farmers daughter....but ah well. Enjoyed the pace and tension built into it. A modern take would surely explore at a hint of the sexual ambiguity of the companion with her aquiline and handsome looks. Her 'more manly'? astute intelligence, foresight and courage. Even though the protagonist is passive the relationship between the two women is so interesting. Does Amante go knowingly to her death?.....
Hi Tony, my mom died over Christmas so I haven't been "with it". I hope you had a decent- actually wonderful holiday season- what with covid, Lord Omicron, your recent move- energy! As a Renaissance Man I expect even you occasionally feel, drained. Still haven't bought James Merrill- stopped reading, NOT GOOD, as I have 50 books at least stacked, well sort of and a Buddhist magazine, ( issues behind) and assorted Beach Reading, from 2020! NYT book review comes with our paper so I add books and cds to the Big A - I used to have a problem, another addictive behavior of filling the basket, 400.00, buy now, PAY LATER, causing marital strife- got it under control and since I am terrified I am going into very early senility, chipped marbles and not enough to begin with- how somebody as down as me could sink lower? Hope all is well. Been listening to Noel Coward, marvelous! and these "old" radio, CBS network in U.S.A.- hosted by E.G. Marshall and before him, a man with a voice with Gothic cachet, Hiram? Mostly the images and titles are better than the content but once in awhile I still it rich! I love the conversation about stories written by educated & well read writers versus the modern day version of demand of writers by a publisher who assume$ for the reader$ what $hall be acceptable in today becau$e of the [$]MARKET- ease of sell, already known pallet, & known $ell; which is largely why today’s movie, theater, television, & literary market is mostly regurgitated comic book story lines, which is NOT LIKELY TO REPRESENT REAL LIFE, as life is inevitably way more complex & nuanced. I believe that’s why those of us who actually care for something unUSUAL or nonPC turn to the past when stories were written by writers imaginations & built upon experience of person, place, & ‘xposure from talent prior to a “feeding the MARKET$ frenzy”. With this said, their are exceptions- yourself & other like minded Channelers (/podcasters) who also write as well as narrate great stories from previous times & include their own inspired work as well. A good story lingers in one’s collective consciousness because it reflects with a plume the collective unconscious, that which we have visceral connection with inspires. What stirs our story soup, has unique & innovative taste, and nourishes our gut is better found from a true “farmer’s market”, not a bank of GMO’s! Thank you for your cultural enhancement & true currency depth of feeding our souls with tales of spirits. I enjoyed the narration but this story made me feel that I was in a mental hospital. The story was all over the place and I couldn’t make sense of anything. I found this one of the worst stories I’ve ever heard. I couldn’t go on listening beyond half of the story.

For me this is the most difficult type of story for me to figure out how I feel about it. Because the story itself was wonderful but, I loathe the main character. I just listened to this right after listening to "Sandman" and I detested the main character of that story as well. However, (and you can correct if I'm wrong Tony) I believe we were not supposed to like the protagonist of "The Sandman" but, I think we were supposed to view the Gray woman as a tragic hero.
But it's really hard to feel completely sorry for someone whose circumstances came about due to her own inability to stand up for herself. Maybe during the time period this was written a beautiful meek (weak-willed) woman was someone to be desired but, not now. Again excellent story but I prefer a hero or heroine whom I can rally behind and empathize with.
Oh those old manuscripts... Gothic Horror lives, at least in France and Germany!
Just finished listening to this in one chunk and early on thought, What a great narrator!! The added bonus was the structural analysis and then personal chat at the end! Thank you for a great evening!

**Reveals Plot - don’t read before listening!
i didn’t find anything weird about this story. it worked incredibly fine. why does a story need to be a certain formula? doesn’t seem to give an author the freedom to write the kind of story he or she would prefer to write. i loved this story - it has compassion, it’s pretty scary, there’s quite a bit of sadness, has a really good plot with twists, and the right ending. the man whose wife was murdered so very wantonly should get him in the end. (as to the murder if the wife, i thought La chauffer had simply gone into the room in the early dawn and did the deed without looking. blond hair would have sufficed.) our little mother lives as happy a life as she could, having been drained almost to death by fear. she is taken care of by the lovely doctor. it’s just really too bad, the author felt she had to let Amant (sp?) go.
you read this so well - i even thought you had a slight Austrian accent in the beginning. guess your just really good with accents :)
oh - and thanks for letting us know who the kid was whom the daughter couldn’t marry. lost track of that.

And a note on the corks in the cheeks- supposedly for playing the Godfather, Marlon Brando stuffed cotton in his mouth/jaw. Imagine the hours and hours of filming like that, every take done a dozen times, whew! And that's only a commitment to his craft, I'm sure a commitment to avoiding your own murder life could push a person to handle it lol
Really enjoyed this story. A great rollicking adventure as you say. Yes glaring fault re Taylor v farmers daughter....but ah well. Enjoyed the pace and tension built into it. A modern take would surely explore at a hint of the sexual ambiguity of the companion with her aquiline and handsome looks. Her 'more manly'? astute intelligence, foresight and courage. Even though the protagonist is passive the relationship between the two women is so interesting. Does Amante go knowingly to her death?.....
All good point. It would be a very different story as a Netflix original!
Hi Tony, my mom died over Christmas so I haven't been "with it". I hope you had a decent- actually wonderful holiday season- what with covid, Lord Omicron, your recent move- energy! As a Renaissance Man I expect even you occasionally feel, drained. Still haven't bought James Merrill- stopped reading, NOT GOOD, as I have 50 books at least stacked, well sort of and a Buddhist magazine, ( issues behind) and assorted Beach Reading, from 2020! NYT book review comes with our paper so I add books and cds to the Big A - I used to have a problem, another addictive behavior of filling the basket, 400.00, buy now, PAY LATER, causing marital strife- got it under control and since I am terrified I am going into very early senility, chipped marbles and not enough to begin with- how somebody as down as me could sink lower? Hope all is well. Been listening to Noel Coward, marvelous! and these "old" radio, CBS network in U.S.A.- hosted by E.G. Marshall and before him, a man with a voice with Gothic cachet, Hiram? Mostly the images and titles are better than the content but once in awhile I still it rich! Plus the cultural shift, old commercials, even news - I am a nerd in that respect, I wanted another degree in anthropology! Namaste. Holly Golightly, NOT Traveling

P.S. I had a weird dream the night after I listened to this: murder and other incidents that I don't usually dream about. I'm sure that I was dreaming my own version of this story.

And, thank you for the beautiful, kind and loving sentiment at the end to help us realize life doesnt hold as much fear and danger as we think and we CAN focus on the Blessings we have and not worry about that which may be unknown. I love the conversation about stories written by educated & well read writers versus the modern day version of demand of writers by a publisher who assume$ for the reader$ what $hall be acceptable in today becau$e of the [$]MARKET- ease of sell, already known pallet, & known $ell; which is largely why today’s movie, theater, television, & literary market is mostly regurgitated comic book story lines, which is NOT LIKELY TO REPRESENT REAL LIFE, as life is inevitably way more complex & nuanced. I believe that’s why those of us who actually care for something unUSUAL or nonPC turn to the past when stories were written by writers imaginations & built upon experience of person, place, & ‘xposure from talent prior to a “feeding the MARKET$ frenzy”. With this said, their are exceptions- yourself & other like minded Channelers (/podcasters) who also write as well as narrate great stories from previous times & include their own inspired work as well. A good story lingers in one’s collective consciousness because it reflects with a plume the collective unconscious, that which we have visceral connection with inspires. What stirs our story soup, has unique & innovative taste, and nourishes our gut is better found from a true “farmer’s market”, not a bank of GMO’s!

I enjoyed the narration but this story made me feel that I was in a mental hospital. The story was all over the place and I couldn’t make sense of anything. I found this one of the worst stories I’ve ever heard. I couldn’t go on listening beyond half of the story.
Sorry, I could do without the fake accents, it's not very good. Your narration is better without.
