I sold my Sony because I was considering the Sigma 105mm Macro. Fortunately, I waited for this Tamron to compare both. You are right about the Sony being outdated for today’s sensor tech, and it would be great to see a refresh. That clutch mechanism is really useful. I don’t use macro often....I just want one in my kit and tend to go for the best available, so I refresh my kit when something nicer comes along 😂 As always, great video. It’s a pleasure to see your content. It's always very well produced and entertaining, with valuable information every time. Keep up the fantastic work!
I wouldn't say that OSS doesn't matter, for handheld video macro shooting is like having footage or not having, for my use case is crucial, sensor stabe is only good in A7RV, all other camera ibis is rather bad, OSS works better. About minimum focus distance, if its 23cm, that means you have shorter working distance between lens and object to get 1:1? If it is true then another reason to chose sony, more space between skitish bug means higher chance of getting footage before it flee away.
Indeed, 1:1 is 1:1 and ideally you want a longer working distance to your subject, for light and sometimes for skittishness. So it's definitely a con for the Tamron. That twelve-blade does at least give a theoretical possibility of nice looking sunstars stopped down (probably f/8 and maybe as far as f/18). Whereas 9 blades would give 18 spokes at best and a blob (like the Sony 90G) at worst. I'm not sure how much better the OSS of the 90G is compared to no VC/OSS/IS on a newer Sony body.
I must admit the whole minimum focus distance thing is throwing me for a loop. Focal length is a physical thing, and so is the macro reproduction of 1:1. So the Sony(28cm) and Tamron(23cm), both being 90mm should effectively have the same focusing distance to achieve a 1:1 macro ratio. The Sigma 105mm Macro, has just about the same focus distance(29cm) as the Sony to achieve the 1:1 macro ratio. What is even going on here?
@@MrSindriSvan I was also surprised that at same focal they have so different MFD. Sony probably have bigger working distance because of heavier breathing effect. I've got also sony 70-200 F4 macro and at 1:2 magnification sony 90mm have also bigger working distance than sony 70-200@200mm, had to use at least TC14 to get slightly bigger working distance than sony 90mm(at 1:2 magnification).
But why is nobody putting the new Tamron head-to-head with the Sigma 105 DG DN? The Sigma is superior to the Sony in terms of image quality, so why are we choosing to compare to the Sony which, by the way, was released in 2015? My gut tells me Tamron is sending their lens out to reviewers, but somehow "discouraging" them from comparing it directly to the Sigma. I'm not buying the hype of this lens until I see it reviewed against the Sigma.
No company ever gets to say what lens i compare against and to suggest that they do this to anyone is honestly pretty ignorant. I compared against the Sony because that’s the lens i own and have used for years.
@@kylemeshna Thanks for your reply, Kyle. I disagree that it's an ignorant assumption because I know for sure it happens, within the photography industry as well as other industries. Also, to be clear, my comment was not necessarily directed at you/your channel in any negative manner. Like you, I'm sure there are many others who simply don't own the Sigma to make the comparison. With that said, there are many who actually do own the Sigma, so I'm having a hard to understanding why there aren't in-depth real world usage comparisons.
@@occipitalexposure5059 As someone who has been doing this for a while, and has spent a significant time with others who also do camera reviews, I can assure you that it being paid/forced by a company to say something specific in a long-form review is FAR less common than you think. This is especially true when it's a comparison.
Thank you very much for this review! I hope you'll get more views in the video because It made me finally decide towards the Tamron. I was already considering it, but this video made me confirm my choice 🥸
I would have liked to see some side by side photo comparissons, in the end that is what matters.

Wait… how did you see this video? It’s not published yet. I appreciate the comment, but confused how you saw it 😂
It appeared in my feed 😅 and I saw that you had zero views after 21h, so I left a (sincere) comment to help with the algorithm 😂
@raf_bw haha appreciate it
This was a perfect explanation, thank you!

@@Beyonceeetje Your spec are for older dslr Tamron macro lens, newer have MFD of 23cm, working distance of 9cm.
