How to Pot Pepper Plants the Easy Way || Black Gumbo

  • In this episode, we grow pepper plants in small containers. Learn how to grow these plants easily in a small pot. We'll cover everything from filling the pot, prepping the soil, planting, and mulching. I will also speak about how to fertilize and where to place your plant for best performance. Sunlight is important to pepper success, and a good harvest requires forethought and a commitment to regular feeding, but fear not, its easy. This method is suited to all, even those with limited gardening space and limited gardening experience.
    I will also demonstrate topping a pepper plant, which is a method to prune for more side-growth and a bushier plant. I'll show you an example of what it does, too. This is not always required, but sometimes helpful.
    If you garden on a small scale, or just want to grow some hot peppers for salsa or some bell peppers for cooking, you can! This is an easy project for all.

    Thanks for the video Scott; I got two seeds from a store bought red pepper and germinated them within a week. They are now growing under a weak grow light and will be put outside in April on the rooftop garden at my apartment building in 2 gallon pots

    New subbie…I’m a novice gardener this is my first successful season, I’m still learning ~ I live in zone 10a/10b (San Francisco) so we get unusual weather mostly foggy ~ I purchased some jalapeño and cayenne pepper plants from Lowe’s….they both were already fruiting…so that was helpful ~ Now it’s late September (usually our summer) but per usual the weather is fickle ~ I just repotted the cayenne last night along with some other plants (sweet potato & some flowers) I put both peppers in the sunniest part of the yard 🙏🏾 I’m hoping to get another yield but we will see, I just yesterday got all my plants on the same watering/fertilizer schedule (I use water soluble fertilizer) fish emulsion 😩 but it works wonders ~ I’ll be trying the bark and lime you use ~ I’m so excited…This is a big deal for a city girl 👧🏿

    Hello Mr Gumbo!!!! You've solved all the mysteries that our grandparents took with them when they passed. I'm the eldest of 8 & the only grankid they taught how to 'dry ripe long hots' & prepare them, but never how to grow them. I KNEW NOTHING LOL! I bought COWHORNS from Home Depot last week, first time, got them home & butchered the poor things like they were tomatoes. I'm going back to get some more. Thanks to you I might yield some RIPENED ON THE VINE RED long hot/Cowhorn peppers for my siblings & children & their children.... I believe we can will finally enjoy the traditional Italian red dried long hots-lightly fried in oil so they PUFF up crunchy & preserved in EVOO! For decades I've been 'gambling' with the junk in the markets searching for a 'might turn red' pepper in a 'pile of greens'. You are a God-send, AMEN. Thank you from Boston

      @@Latebloomershow HEY!! I know you got-ta have it!! Thank you for your interest :)
      The seeds I yielded from store LONG HOTS didn't work out. My seeds, after germination never reached the quality like the nursery plants do. Even the rooting and nurturing didn't cut it. I had to give in, buy the Cowhorn plants and focus. I put 6 healthy plants in ONE plastic tub on a moving platform with wheels.
      I lived in a 6 family basement apt, in Providence surrounded by stone and concrete. NO SOIL!!
      My Cowhorn babies were HOME based in front of my car in the parking lot. They were wheeled around ALL day chasing 8 hours of sun.
      I collected rain water from the apt rain spout, used rich fish fertilizer as directed, and treated for bugs with soap sprays. Clipping the abundance of buds is crucial to assure the yield of peppers were hardy and happy and the plant had a strong trunk. (Its so unnatural to keep the population down.. sad lol)
      It was one of the most grueling ventures ever. Months and months of this but we persevered. I then harvested more than I could have wished for. The rewards keep coming as I still have 30 dried Cowhorns in big jars with dry raw rice to control humidity. They are just waiting for the last leg of the journey to crispy fry n store in oil. Oops I got ahead of myself.... excited!!
      Watching a long hot GREEN pepper turn RED on the vine was ETHEREAL!
      I ripened them in a room with a plant light, DEHUMIDIFIER AND after they were naturally red and soft they went to the DEHYDRATOR overnight.
      Now, Grampas peppers are here again.
      Funny how my sisters, brothers, & nieces, remember these gems.
      As I am the eldest of 8, they hardly knew my Grampa like I did. So what a gift it is that it all worked out and I am the 'GRAMPA PEPPER' QUEEN! ♡

    "You can never have enough peppers." No truer words were ever spoken. I'm sick with envy. I'll be VERY lucky to get my two plants to produce enough to satisfy me. Wow, I haven't thought of lime in such a long time and I don't know why. I'm ordering some today. I thought maybe you might soak that root ball before putting it in, but guess it doesn't matter. So funny the background FX when you clipped that stem (garbage can lid?). I love your style, Scott. So natural, and you seem like such an expert. You've got a great garden, and I'd love to meet you in person one of these days. You could give me a tour and we could do a collab. Okra, talk about okra, something else I'm going to miss out on this summer. Great video! Take care, my friend.

      Yeah it was a bit of an exaggeration but some areas here did actually get up to 8 inches the other day and we had serious flooding the day I filmed that pepper video. Lots of people with water in the house in the area. 6" deep in between my raided beds for a few hours, which are 7 inches high, lol.

    Ever try drilling loads of 3/8 inch holes in the sides of the pot to make it air pruning?
    Also, I use an inverted glass bottle with water in it shoves into the ground.
    Constant moisture and not overwatered.
    If you want drier soil, then place the cap on the bottle and drill a 1/4" hole in the cap.
    One could also add in 20% more perlite for better drainage and aeration.

    Hi Mr Black Gumbo 👋
    I'm in the northern part of Australia where we have sun pretty much all year (it's just dry or rain season here). So after I watched some of your presentations I ve started growing chilies from seeds, but some of them tend to grow too closely in my seedling tray, like 5 of them. Should I transfer them as a whole ortry to separate them ? I think the roots already tangled by now. Thanks for your time and love your other gardening vids too 👍

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I understand rightly, you have many seedlings growing too close together? I'd thin them by trimming the weakest of them at the soil level with scissors, and leave the one strong one. If I understand you, that's what I'd do.

    • @beerwine1000
      @beerwine1000 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ScottHead yep Sir that's it. Good idea , cutting it so I don't have to separate them, but if I leave it as it is are they going to suffer and not producing ? Thank you for the reply

  • @cirquenurse

    A few of my seedlings are flowering before transplant like the one you showed in this video. My summer squash have been the most precocious, with multiple buds and flowers starting to open in the last week. I'm in New England so it hasn't been warm enough to transplant yet, I am still in the hardening off phase. Does the idea of pruning the early flowers to conserve the seedling's energy hold true for other plants besides peppers, like my summer squash?

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No let he squash flower. They often get he male flowers out first and you want female and male at the same time, so let them go. :-)

    Appreciate this video. When I transplant the peppers I've been teasing the rootball a little. But you just go from the home depot container right into your pot. Am I messing things up by teasing the rootballs? Thank you!

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No teasing is fine, on a very root bound ball its good practice. But the roots will take off on their own so I have not found it really necessary.

      I get it at Home Depot, I don't remember the brand and its pouring down rain right now so when I can look, I'll try to get you a brand name. If you just look for the cheapest bag that says "Hardwood Mulch" you should be fine.

    I have a bunch of pepper pants that are taking forever! I started them from seeds. Some are from grocery store mini peppers and some are old heirlooms. They are like 8 weeks old and only 4 inches. I just fertilized them for the 1st time and they greened back up. I didn't know about fertilizing yet.. Do you think they so small because of that out am I just being very impatient?

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pepper plants are often slow to grow, and they love heat. Be patient, fertilize them on a regular schedule, and when they start putting on fruit, back off on the fertilizers that is nitrogen-heavy. But yes, patience is key with peppers. The plants can make it through the winter in many cases and give you more than one year too. :-)

    Hi. I have a specific pepper problem with my bell peppers. A good half of the newly forming buds are YELLOW in colour, and fall off the plant with the slightest touch, and they leave a CLEAN BREAK when the stem becomes detatched. When I sliced the tiny bud open, the flesh indside the flower is quite moist. Another problem is that baby peppers shortly after pollination start to become yellow and fall off.Please can you help me understand what is going wrong???!! Many thanks, Nathanael

    Greetings I have 3 pots 2 small red pots and 1 large red pot and I grew peppers indoors before in 2018 then all of the sudden my seeds grew up skinny is there any way I can grow peppers bigger?

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They prefer strong direct sunlight all day. Skinny plants usually means they are stretching for more light. Indoors is difficult to grow big pepper plants.

      Some peppers are just short, you can tie up the fruiting branches on posts if you need to.

    I have a 10 gal grow bag, how many peppers and tomatoes can I put in it. And is it ok to put bark and chips in the bottom or should I use all potting soil. Thank you for your videos.

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wouldn't put bark chips in the bottom unless you are just trying to save on soil, but ten gallons is pretty small for a tomato, you might get away with two tomatoes in there but you will have to fertilize and water more regularly. Same with peppers, though some pepper plants trend on the smaller side compared to tomatoes.

    Which do u prefer most in-ground, bucket, or container gardening? Or does it depend on amount of rain, and other conditions for specific vegetables? 😊

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I prefer potted peppers, much easier to care for. Potted meaning bucket, actual pot, grow bag, whatever. I like to be able to move them around if I need, and they tend to prefer the drier climate I can give them easily in a pot. My soil retains a lot of moisture and if its really rainy the beds tend to get pretty water logged. The peppers I have in the ground usually (but not always) do not perform like this in the pots, except for years where the rains are moderate. In those rare years, I get in-ground plants that are enormous and weighed down with fruit. So I like both, but potted plants are easier to manage their watering.

    What type of hardwood mulch did you use?
    Is oak acceptable?
    What about pine?

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hardwood is deciduous wood, not pine. You can use it, but I find hardwood is better for mulching. I don't know what's in it, probably junk trees and shrubs ground up, but its all definitely hardwood. Just look for "hardwood mulch" bags at the big box store.

    Do you have experience with or opinion of the air root pruning grow bags?

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have used grow bags in the past, yes. They work just fine but mine dried out much sooner than my other pots in the summer and required more watering. I grew Bok Choy and some tomatoes in them last year. They were 3 gallon size. I have some 7 gallon bags awaiting use with fig trees. They seem to work ok.

    • @olegig5166
      @olegig5166 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scott Head yes, I can see how they might use more water. But tell me, were they stand alone or did you have them in a water tray? And did you see any difference in production?
      I guess I’m wondering if the increased water use was offset by increased production. Thanks

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I stood them alone and simply watered them as I usually would any other container. I'll be learning how to more efficiently use grow bags as I get into potting some figs in them, as my figs are very important to me and I'd hate to lose one.
