Slow stitching…so, turns out my favorite pastime has a name!! I’ve been doing this since I was about 8 years old…I’m 62 now. Glad the younger generation is catching onto such a peaceful hobby. My absolute favorite thing I’ve ever made “slow stitching” is a small cloth doll with embroidered face and five sweet little two piece outfits…all that fit all together, onto the space of my open hand. 🤗
I'm of the same generation, born in Europe; we did a LOT of hand embroidering and hand quilting from the time we were in first grade ... Still doing it, and my style is evolving to include fabric painting, bead embroidery and fabric 'paper'. This passtime/hobby is peaceful, it's useful and one can start without spending a lot of money. I make decorative pillow covers (12x12?) as gifts for family and friends, also journal covers.
This was so inspirational to me. I saw this and immediately turned off my phone and went to get out my old embroidery stuff. I came back to leave this comment because it’s two days later and I’m committed to the nature journal now. I’ve embroidered prairie crocuses (they bloom this time of year where I live) and a bird inspired by the birds who made a nest outside my window. I just wanted to say that this was such a lovely video about such a wonderful concept. Thank you so much for posting it.
When my daughter was young she had a pair of denim overalls and a little cotton flounce top (She was about 4 years old). Every night after she went to bed, I'd embroider something on one of them. I never planned it out, just stitched in the moment. She was always so excited to wake up to a new bug, flower, muppet, etc. on her clothes. They've been lost over time and many moves (she's 50 yrs old now) but she still has fond memories of them.
I love to quilt, and do the piecing by hand. I see how this can be worked into a quilt. It’s so peaceful to start with just the choices of colors, patterns, laying it all out. My friends machine quilt, rotary cut, and speed sewing. I tell them it’s not a race. It’s peaceful and creative. This is a lovely channel.
When I heard you say "I have fabric every where", I knew I was in the right place and subscribed immediately. It's so comforting to have someone who understands fabric obsession. My piles of fabric bring me such joy and most have old stories to tell. I'll be searching out your past videos and will look forward to future ones. Thank you for this wonderful video. Blessings.
Oh my goodness - that was 25 minutes of the most beautiful inspiration! Thank you for the expert guidance, Sherry . . . cannot wait to make a little pouch!
This is wonderful craftsmanship. and inspiring information. I would ask to see your work better if your hands did not cover or fan out so much over the finished stitching. It’s very tactile and lovely hands deter from the view. Thank you for this video
Thank you Sherry for taking the care and patience to share your stitching. I would love to try slow stitching and have just subscribed so I hope to learn more from your videos. God bless, vera
This is the most enjoyable morning I’ve had in many years, sipping coffee, listening to the birds outside with the windows open and watching this video . I’m so glad , I stumbled upon your channel ,, lovely work .
Fabric scraps are hard to toss away....the colors and textures draw me in and get tossed in a bin, or two. I am fortunate to have been handed down bits and pieces of my grandmothers' stitching lives...buttons, threads, needles, old fabrics, bits of laces, stand cloths that they, or their mothers, had stitched themselves. Their love of stitching was passed down to my sister and I. My paternal grandmother taught me to embroider at a young age, 8 years. I still recall (at 71 years old) how it felt to sit next to her on a winter afternoon and learn a new embroidery stitch. Such a treasure.
The Concise British Flora I've had for 35 years since I was at school - and I use it all the time as I teach Science (specifically biology) - but I would never have thought of using it, or any other nature books, for inspiration. And it's one of my most favourite of all books. What a great idea!!! Thank you so much for that.
You can make a pocket for a tee or jacket or your denims, a journal cover, a decorative pillow (you can buy pillow forms in many sizes at craft stores), or if you're really ambitious, even a window or shower curtain (liner underneath for this one). You can work each small piece individually (while watching TV? Or listening to a book?), then put them together into a larger project. So many ideas ... thank you @sherryiris. You have a new subscriber (Florida here)
Thank you so much! This is so kind of you to share your knowledge! I think crafting makes such a difference in everyone’s life that gives it a chance. I hope you have a lovely week.
I have always struggled to understand how to start slow stitching, which supplies I needed etc...I am so glad that youtube recommended your video as you explained every step in a very clear way🫠😊🥰 Binge-watching has officially started😂 Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge and tips, very inspiring for sure🌿🌿
I have just discovered slow stitching. This is more satisfying than a quilt. My sis does machine-stitched quilts. I enjoy hand stitching and this just fits my style as I have made penny rugs which is wool art. Both are relaxing. I haven't sewn for years and gave away all my material when we moved. I expect I will have to hang out at garage sales and thrift store to fine materials. I can't wait.
Thank you so much, totally inspiring. I was excited to find a bag of assorted cotton reels in an emporium last week. Sylko real cotton, not polyester, and a lovely range of colours. All new and unused.
At school I remember doing a needlework project that involved researching different fabrics, and local companies were wonderful for giving me small samples. It was many decades ago, in Manchester, which was a big centre for fabric manufacture and when I was a child it was already an industry in decline, but still a great place to find interesting fabrics. I remember getting a big bag of printed cotton remnants from a little shop near Piccadilly, and they were great quality and colour-fast.
What a lovely video, thank you for sharing your talents with us. I have so many scraps as I’m a quilter so I really shouldn’t be buying any more fabric, but I can’t resist 😅
I loved this! Thank you for a beautiful, inspiring introduction to slow stitching. Now I have something I actually want to do with all my off cuts of material that I can't seem to let go of!
This may sound very strange coming from me haha, but you have very beautiful hands. They remind me of my mum's hands. She also taught me how to do embroidery, and she created lots of lovely pieces throughout her life :)
Lovely video I wanted to do this but didnt know how to start so small as i have tiny pieces of fabric i sidnt want to throw away. Thank you for giving me the inspiration
I call these Fabric Sandwiches. I like upcycling real silk sari offcuts (bought from an auction site). One project: I machine-stitched the small lengths together to create 2 x square pieces then hand-stitched on handmade carnations and their leaves to create a 3d cushion. 💮💮💮
I've always been a _"the journey is more important than arriving at the destination"_ kind of person, so I really loved this video. Whether I'm crocheting, hand sewing a (simple) garment, mending, or even just enjoying a cup of tea while writing in my journal...using my hands in such slow, deliberate ways always puts me in a state of relaxed mindfulness. And that state of mindfulness is such a wondrous luxury in this often too-hurried pace of modern living. Your pieces are absolutely beautiful! thank you for sharing them. 💖
That was inspiring !! I'm not a novice stitcher and have wanted to start slow stitching for a long time but have never taken the plunge. I have all the ingredients that you've just mentioned and now I feel able to start the journey. Thank you.
Oh my goodness.... I learned so much!! I have been collecting tutorial files because it looks like such relaxing forms of creating soft art.... I have been so inspired now!!! I know what I want to do!! Thank you for sharing this ❤
I've been waiting for this video. Looking forward to starting working on a bigger piece and taking my time to work on it for an extended period of time, like your year Nature stitch journal. I've been Slow Stitching for a few years now, I love doing it but I always seem to be in a rush to finish whatever I'm working on. So my plan is too use this project to put the slow into my Slow Stitching. To take the time to add fabrics and stitches for the pleasure of it, rather than to finish the project as quickly as I can. My theme for the this piece of work is Memories. Looking forward to watching your future videos.
Oh I know exactly what you mean Jacqui! The year long stitched journal means that there isn't a rush to finish. You can take a break from it too and it will be there waiting for you although I'm pretty obsessed with mine! The idea of memories sounds wonderful! Thank you so much for watching xx
This is just lovely Sherry, thank you so much for sharing your embroidery knowledge and ideas. I have now started my nature journal, thank you always for the inspiration. Carrie xx
What a lovely and inspiring video - beautifully done. Nature has so much to offer us for stitching. A lovely nature journal might just be in my future. Thank you for sharing your time and talent with us.
Hi Sherry, Sweet Peas as my favourite flowers, they were my mum's favourite so I aways think of her when I see them. Your work is beautiful and so unique/one of a kind each piece … happy stitching 💖🌸
The objects you stitch are so pretty! I am very inspired to do a monthly “journal” of flowers and/or fruits according to calendar months. Perhaps, to make fabric covers for my journaling, or just to frame. I am even thinking how pretty it would be to take the stitched fabric and make a lampshade! ✌️👍❤️😁
Truly inspiring. I have teenagers now... I keep every darned thing. I have so much fabric piled up on my dryer🙄😂. I'm so glad I watched this video today. I have done embroidery type things before, I feel like I've learned a lot here. Thank you!! Love the things you've made=)
I’m new to your channel and loved it. I’m so in love with laces and know some stitchers my grandmother taught me long ago. Thank you and I will be listening in!

What lovely pieces you are making !!! I loved your video, have just found you & happy I did !!! Thank you for sharing, I love slow stitching & you have so many wonderful ideas !!! 🪡🧵💙
So glad I found you. I quilt and did some embroidery as a child. I’d love to the bee. Just start simple. Then move on to the wild flowers you were showing. I will have to get a small hoop, needles for embroidery, I think a piece of linen. Could 8 just get a pattern for the bee and if so where do I get patterns. We use to get them and iron them on. That is where I am but so looking forward to getting started. Thanks so much. Linda

Yes, she also had me sold at "keep everything" because I have soo many tiny little scraps that I think are just beautiful.
Me too.
Me three!
I think there may be a place or two back home that needs a bit of a stash... so I picked up some at an antique store on the way home today!
I’m so glad you came across my feed today! It is refreshing to know there is a name for what I so enjoy to create. It’s me! Lol Thank you!!!!
