La Sutherland non era prodiga di complimenti, né verso se stessa né per le sue colleghe. Solo della Gencer scrisse "quella grandissima cantante". E aveva ragione. Nell'Adriana, e nel monologo di Fedra in particolare, non c'è nessuna che sia alla sua altezza, a cominciare dalla "creatrice" Olivero la cui interpretazione appare oggi molto "polverosa", a differenza della Gencer che è ancora attualissima a più di cinquant'anni di distanza. E lei, turca di nascita, sfoggia qui una dizione da manuale: basta ascoltare la frase di chiusura ("Chiedo in bontà di ritirarmi") per rendersene conto - Leyla è la SOLA a pronunciarla con dignità ed eleganza, senza enfasi inopportune. L'unica ad aver capito che Adriana, malgrado la rivalità, resta pur sempre un'attrice del XVIII secolo al cospetto di una principessa. Un'interpretazione da brividi. Grazie infinite a Sezgin per questa perla.
Bellissimo commento. Il monologo è sublime e Leyla Gencer impressionante. Vero quel che dici sulla breve frase di chiusura. Il tono di voce nel parlato è scuro, basso, assolutamente contraltile.
Excellent! Such a deep interpretation a full emotional package. She is the only one who makes the right change between the parlato and the singing especially in the crucial moment ..."che mai debba arrossir"... the switch from the parlato che to the long note mai is of an amazing beauty.

She plays herself...but not the Charakter..she played sometimes very impressive- but I always see An- not Adriana, Aida or Leonora.. Gencer is singing with control- she sings a Actress which was famous for a "Natural" Acting- but in the 1750s- not in a "Kinder with Konzept-Stage Performance in a middleclass German Opera House"

I saw Netrebko at the Met on Adriana and Aida this year. She is overall a good singer and a good actress. She has a stage presence and a character in her voice with solid high notes. The times are different. Met audiences will clap whatever they see on stage after paying high prices for tickets and being mostly a tourist in New York. What is important is to share what they see on stage on their social media accounts and tag soloists. Leyla had no social media account to expose the details of her day-to-day life or like her fans postings on herself. She was lucky, she grew up in a world that was not so much polluted ecologically yet. She grew up in a place where there is no classical musical tradition and made lots of achievements in her own right. She never had these clean or HD records but only B/W pictures. Anyways, every artist is unique. What is the point of demeaning one against other? Diva wars are over longtime ago. Enjoy what you listen or see when you can. Opera is always a unique experience.
