the Spirit Crusher i see around me is addiction. it's tough out there for a lot of people but i just want to let everyone know it's not impossible, they can still win the fight.
    RIP Chuck

Speaking about addictions: depression, anxiety and some mental illnesses could be considered addictions themselves. They are "just" a place to refuge or a monster to feed so it is in perfect line with the song!

The way I've always seen it: Spirit Crusher is Chuck talking to the listener. Chuck has battled with the Spirit Crusher himself (I agree with your depiction of the Spirit Crusher) and is now giving his advice to people who are currently battling with it. He is trying to guide but also cheer the listener up as they fight their own Spirit Crusher themselves.

I remember watching the video for The Philosopher on Headbanger's Ball (actually it was on its Brazilian version - Furia Metal) and being completely awestruck with Death's sound and Chuck's voice. Not only his vocals, but his voice, what was he singing and writing about. Spirit Crusher is a masterpiece and, having dealt with depression myself and in a constant fight with it, your video essay was beautifully written. And, in my book, spot on. This is by no means an attempt at advertising, i just think you would genuinely enjoy it with the depth you listen, but i think you would really love this song i just put out on my youtube. Exactly how I always pictured this song. The key and tempo shifts does feel like a monster chasing you down. Voice of the Soul does a similar thing! The way the song ends reminds me of someone whos life was cut short by a tragic accident. The pinch harmonic reminds me of a cars tyres squeeling right before a crash. Chucks music takes us on a journey.

This was a fascinating take on these lyrics, one that I'd never even considered. Your way of thinking is quite refreshing.
But I also see it as a case of confirmation bias - you're looking for themes & meanings within the lyrics to prove your narritive. There's nothing wrong with that...we all do it from time to time.
If you really peel the layers back, Chuck was simply writing riffs, then piecing them together in ways that worked for him. It wasn't so much about how it felt, but how cool & exciting it sounded to him. Later on he added the lyrics to the already-written music.
In my opinion, he's the greatest lyricist in Metal - but his words weren't as intensely metaphoric/overtly pre-planned as you make them out to be (most of the time). Just cool vocal patterns, with themes about betrayal, and the power of chasing your dreams no matter what the outside world thought.

Spirit Crusher is one of the greatest achievements of Chuck.
Both musically and lyrically this is an embodiment and ultimate manifestation of it's stated theme: CRUSHER of SPIRIT.
This is as simple and at the same time as transcendent as you could get: when you erase layer by layer all the forms and reaches the very essence of things and being.
You are but a consciousness, an eternal, everliving and everlasting SPIRITthat could take any form thou want,
There is no end nor Death, only the everflowing strem of energy that forms all the things and phenomenons you could imagine.
And the only harm you could do is to harm yourself.
    To CRUSH your SPIRIT.
This is as far as words could get.
Beyond them lies an everbeing eternity.
And what could you feel when you realize it except a transcendental ecstasy?!

When I heard this song for the first time I immediately recall this from Carlos Castaneda book:
We have a predator that came from the depths of the cosmos and took over the rule of our lives. Human beings are its prisoners. The Predator is our lord and master. It has rendered us docile, helpless. If we want to protest, it suppresses our protest. If we want to act independently, it demands that we don't do so... I have been beating around the bush all this time, insinuating to you that something is holding us prisoner. Indeed we are held prisoner! "This was an energetic fact for the sorcerers of ancient Mexico ... They took us over because we are food for them, and they squeeze us mercilessly because we are their sustenance. just as we rear chickens in chicken coops, the predators rear us in human coops, humaneros. Therefore, their food is always available to them." "No, no, no, no," [Carlos replies] "This is absurd don Juan. What you're saying is something monstrous. It simply can't be true, for sorcerers or for average men, or for anyone." "Why not?" don Juan asked calmly. "Why not? Because it infuriates you? ... You haven't heard all the claims yet. I want to appeal to your analytical mind. Think for a moment, and tell me how you would explain the contradictions between the intelligence of man the engineer and the stupidity of his systems of beliefs, or the stupidity of his contradictory behaviour. Sorcerers believe that the predators have given us our systems of belief, our ideas of good and evil, our social mores. They are the ones who set up our hopes and expectations and dreams of success or failure. They have given us covetousness, greed, and cowardice. It is the predators who make us complacent, routinary, and egomaniacal." "'But how can they do this, don Juan? [Carlos] asked, somehow angered further by what [don Juan] was saying. "'Do they whisper all that in our ears while we are asleep?" "'No, they don't do it that way. That's idiotic!" don Juan said, smiling. "They are infinitely more efficient and organized than that. In order to keep us obedient and meek and weak, the predators engaged themselves in a stupendous manoeuvre stupendous, of course, from the point of view of a fighting strategist. A horrendous manoeuvre from the point of view of those who suffer it. They gave us their mind! Do you hear me? The predators give us their mind, which becomes our mind. The predators' mind is baroque, contradictory, morose, filled with the fear of being discovered any minute now." "I know that even though you have never suffered hunger... you have food anxiety, which is none other than the anxiety of the predator who fears that any moment now its manoeuvre is going to be uncovered and food is going to be denied. Through the mind, which, after all, is their mind, the predators inject into the lives of human beings whatever is convenient for them. And they ensure, in this manner, a degree of security to act as a buffer against their fear." "The sorcerers of ancient Mexico were quite ill at ease with the idea of when [the predator] made its appearance on Earth. They reasoned that man must have been a complete being at one point, with stupendous insights, feats of awareness that are mythological legends nowadays. And then, everything seems to disappear, and we have now a sedated man. What I'm saying is that what we have against us is not a simple predator. It is very smart, and organized. It follows a methodical system to render us useless. Man, the magical being that he is destined to be, is no longer magical. He's an average piece of meat." "There are no more dreams for man but the dreams of an animal who is being raised to become a piece of meat: trite, conventional, imbecilic.

Great analysis of this song, VARVIS! I've been wondering who or what Spirit Crusher really is, and here I found this wonderful video of yours. I got this feeling that (for me) Spirit Crusher is Russia. I live in country where we share some borderline with Russia, and the tension have been rising since their insane attack to Ukraine. "Don't let it (lies, threats, propaganda) in, it could tear you right apart" And so on. It's an amazing song.

Huh, I've always assumed Spirit Crusher was about a narcissistic person. It starts with the Shark-like riff that you've mentioned and it suddenly springs the singing on you, much like when you hear your abuser circling about before closing in on you, then it starts escalating just like a shouting match, and the chorus feels a lot like the pounding in your head right after a panic attack. The disjointed rhythm before and after the chorus also reminds me of the incoherence you feel during panic attacks, which can be triggered by a narcissistic abuser. Interesting how differently people can interpret Chuck's lyrics. Reminds me of Dio.
