"Ballad of Fallen Angels" is one of the greatest episodes not just of Cowboy Bebop, but of anime in general. The theme, the central conflict we catch glimpses of, the score, everything. It all works very well. So awesome to see you all react to this series, it's one of the best ever.
Wen (the evil kid) is an interesting character, he had something happen to him that literal stopped him from being able to grow. I think it’s meant to be a metaphor for not being able to move on from the traumatic experiences of your past. At the end of the episode even tho he’s dying he feels at peace because he could finally move on from what happened to him. Something spike doesn’t understand , he literally says “yea I understand. As if.” when Wen asks him if he gets it.
Jets whole character arch is very sad to me personally, hes a good man, heart of gold, he's deeply kind and genuinely takes care of those around him literally in ways only a mother would at times, and things just dont really go his way. The guy needs and deserves a happy family and all he really has is his bebop crew, for now.
One of the greatest anime of all time. Remember the lore where the hyperspace gate exploded. It actually is a big part of the background lore in the story
Man, always love the direction of Cowboy Bebop episodes. From the music to the shot composition to the dialogue. Just hits. Also I appreciate the Zatch Bell shirt.
Glad to hear you guys starting to acknowledge the soundtrack more and more, as the OST is legendary in its own right. Originally five discs, a second box set was released a few years later brought the total to ten...and then the movie added two more discs. It's a TON of jazz, blues, rock, pop, and various other styles all composed by one composer. I think it was Mehgan who mentioned getting the soundtrack on vinyl - to my knowledge, it was never released on vinyl, just CD, BUT...the original DVD releases stateside had the discs look like vinyl records, which was pretty hip at the time.
You are absolutely right that this is by far one of the most cinematic anime ever made. The influence from genius filmmakers is absolutely prominent here. The soundtrack is also beyond insane, words can't even do it justice, the quality is just through the roof, every single track. There are no other anime like this. Enjoy it while you can, one of a kind experience. Legendary status. Cheers! Can't wait till you guys also watch death note, some time in the future. Its absolutely worth it and makes for great discussions and reactions. It also happens to have cinematic quality in a good number of episodes. You'll love it, hopefully its in your radar.
“It’s incredible…..it’s incredible” and that my friend is the perfect summation of cowboy bebop. It’s so fucking good that even 20 years after first viewing it the show still leaves me speechless at times
This is one of the single most powerful episodes in this show, and that is saying something. Both of the songs as Spike is walking up to the church and as he's falling from the window are just... next level. The composer for Cowboy Bebop, Yoko Kano, did an amazing job from start to finish. One recording that she was involved in back in 2020, during the lockdown, was a kind of... virtual "getting the band back together, plus quite a bit more" of the group that helped realize her music for the show, doing a cover of the closing song The Real Folk Blues. I would strongly recommend watching that after you're done with the series, rather than sooner. It'd even be worth reacting to, I think. I'd even say that the Cowboy Bebop Movie would be worth reacting to if you can get hold of it. But yeah, I just love the William Gibson Cyberpunk energy of the show's aesthetic. The vibe that "for us, this is incredibly advanced and yet slightly retro technology, for them, it is Tuesday." All while they're in a setting that is intensely lived-in. Seriously, if you guys haven't read the Neuromancer trilogy from Gibson, and you enjoy this show, I strongly recommend reading it. Oh, and I will say that everyone on the crew has a common quality linking them together. At least the three on the ship right now. I'm not saying what it is, but... it is there. Enjoy continuing with the show ;) I'm with you guys for the ride!
Both ballard of Fallen angels and sympathy for the devil , are both great episodes that make you feel so many things for these characters in such a short amount of time but also allows the audience to have discussions afterwards about show and themes and go underneath the surface.
I always get the feeling that the creators of this show have like 100 + episodes of worldbuilding that we never see. The economy with which this series keeps its focus on what matters to it while being so firmly set in its place and time is incredible.
Yeah, this is one of the coolest shows out there. Glad you two are enjoying it and I know for sure that you’ll love the rest. Each episode is amazing in its own way
10:12 The music is going off nonstop, every single episode. Seven+ soundtracks of music for this whole IP, which is insane, even if you consider some tracks are repeats. Yoko Kanno is a once-in-a-generation-level musical genius, and the fact they could seamlessly weave her very diverse, eclectic soundtrack through the series also speaks to how great of a creative team was behind every aspect of this show.
I just want to point out a subtle aspect of the character building for Spike in episode 5. When he is back on the ship, you'll notice he is pulling out his gun, ammo, and grenades from the refrigerator which makes absolutely no sense and is easily overlooked. HOWEVER, when you notice it and ask "why?" the only thing that makes sense is the saying "revenge is a dish best served cold." It makes sense for a character going to confront his rival and uses a mystic/psychic to pursue bounties, like in episode 1. idk i just really like that weird detail
This is top tier writing I wish it got more seasons but there's a hidden intention too the whole show, not going too spoil anything now but remember the final quote at the end of the final episode (when you get there).
Your alls initial point about how Bebop has a unique way of character and world building without all the lore dump is really spot on for this series. Love watching you all get into it. These 2 are some of my favorite episodes. Makes me think about how you all often bring up that a lot of series now a days treat their audiences like they are dumb and will spell everything out. Bebop imo is a prime example of a series that perfectly balances out the just enough pieces to feed you and leave you hungry for more 🚀
Hello gang. great reaction series y'all. Just wanted to comment on the Soundtrack which is pretty iconic in the history of anime and consists of a number of soundtrack albums composed by Yoko Kanno and her band: The Seatbelts, a diverse band Kanno formed to create the music for the series, with a principal focus in jazz. I do have 3 vinyls recently repressed for the 25th anniversary of this magnificent series. Cheers !
Wanted to address some misgivings, mischaracterizations, and misunderstandings without getting into anything in spoiler territory. -Spike wasn't asking Jet to tell him about his arm. It was the opposite. He was deflecting to say while they're friends that their friendship doesn't extend to them discussing their pasts. They've both been through things that they don't want to talk about and it isn't the way they normally communicate with each other. Jet doesn't know Spike's history, but he does know that the Syndicates are super dangerous (previous episode tell us that he was part of the ISP or police). Later in the episode, you see Jet telling him a little bit more about what happened to him arm, though he is still vague and you see Jet rush out to go help Spike after Faye calls after he's clipped the bonsai tree (what he perceives to be a bad omen). Jet really values his friendship with Spike beyond the veil of the machismo they normally display together. When Jet goes after Spike he knows how dangerous the situation he's jumping into could be. -Annie in this case is short for Anastasia. It's not an alias . She says only two people who can call her that. She's referring to the two people in the picture they flashed to. One of them is Mao. I think we can assume that the other person in the photo was her husband and that her husband was likely in the Syndicate. -Spike wasn't a hitman/assassin so to speak. He was part of a major crime syndicate as I think you realized. -Faye is described as being really greedy and seeing the bounty she sees it as her ticket to make a lot of money, but she unlike Jet does not recognize the danger involved with the Syndicate. When Spike came for her and she realized he was in legitimate danger she does convey her feelings for the rest of the crew. She calls Jet in a panic in hopes that he can come and assist. She was somewhat sarcastic when she described them as a team, but part of her definitely feels that way.
The song Green Bird that plays while Spike is falling from the window is actually sung by Yoko Kanno, the composure of the entire OST. She's just so damn incredible.
The pieces of the broken glass are pieces of a note telling 'em why they can't be together??? MF is a poet. But for real episode 5 brings it out of you... in my opinion one of the best 23 minutes ever drawn by anyone for anything.
Sessions #5 and #6: This series is like a space road movie where as spectators we see the journey of the Bebop crew, their adventures and the appearance of bits of their past. Both of them remember situations and dialogues because at the end everything will make even more sense! and we will have the complete puzzle. -_-...
There Might be only 2 episodes of Cowboy Bebop, that Im Not a Fan of. But the Whole Series is a Masterpiece in Animation, Story Telling, Design And Music off course.
@@oxiiacid maybe I'm being too aggressive, but the phrase "this is when X show _really_ starts" unfortunately _does_ sound like you're invalidating prior episodes. I love how they slightly hint at Faye and Spike's love interest being one and the same with the whistling. Not the last time they do that in the series.
Fun fact: Blues and the way an harmonica plays is commonly considered "emotional" by the experience a person has had. So a kid playing Blues so well, kinda foreshadows the fact that he is no mere kid
I'm going to say it right now, forget about any detailed and extensive flashbacks. If the show talks about the past at some point (which, to be honest, it does all the time), then it will always do so from the perspective of the present. There is only one exception and that exception is at the same time a lie. The past in this series only belongs to its characters, not to the viewers.
There is no single Cowboy Bebop album, there were ~90 original tracks recorded for the 26 episodes and movie. Part of the motivation was they did not think the show would sell toys but felt they could sell albums as additional income for the show (it worked)
Well, that explains a lot. I couldn't find the album during that time, so I recorded 80 minutes of the soundtrack off TH-cam onto a CD. Loaned it out and never saw it again.
@Arcalargo Are these the definitive original 8? And then plus the movie soundtrack would be every official bebop track? Everything after would be mix albums and remix songs?
@Arcalargo I only ever had OST1 that came with a boxset, Blue and No Disc, and those were each bought ~5 years apart, have listened to each 100 times. Nice to know there's another 6 albums waiting.
Spike is the one who betrayed Vicious, he was the one man Vicious trusted and believed in. They were partners in crime since they were kids, then Vicious went off to war, met an Arms Dealer named Julia, fell in love yet had nothing so he betrayed the cause he'd lost faith in to make enough money to marry her and start a new life, but she didn't want a new life, she liked the danger of her job yet married Vicious anyway because he NEEDED her in way no else ever had. He couldn't find work, felt ashamed he couldn't provide the life he felt she deserved, then Spike needed help and Vicious saved his life; leaving Spike to heal and recover with Julia (bad idea in hindsight) while killing everyone that had hurt Spike. Spike and Vicious teamed up again only this time while Vicous felt reborn, Spike started looking for an out and had an affair with Julia behind Vicious back. Vicious discovered this and lost any sanity, any hope for love or trust or brotherhood and now is "an old scarred up Great White Shark wondering why no one's killed him yet" so he just does what he's best at: killing, wanting to die and lose himself in slaughter.
Welcome to the plot. The series is mostly episodic except for the Spike episodes. Each character will get their backstory explained. No rush, just enjoy the ride. Since you're watching the dub, can you believe Vicious is Might Guy? The sci-fi aspect of the show is pretty logical & grounded, but they tease it out throughout the series.
Spike apparently Lost an eye And Got it repaired. I don't think We Know More About this though... The Kid remind of "Kenneth" the Immortal in the Highlander series.
Tell me you don't understand what a cybernetic eye is without directly telling me you don't understand what a cybernetic eye is.... -__- or a robot for that matter. "Oh, there's history..." No shit. You didn't gather that from when she suddenly started staring at him? When they were talking to each other as if they knew each other all their lives? -____- Those things and the laughing at the moment at the end of episode 6 I think are enough to show me I don't want to watch any more of these.
"Ballad of Fallen Angels" is one of the greatest episodes not just of Cowboy Bebop, but of anime in general. The theme, the central conflict we catch glimpses of, the score, everything. It all works very well.
