You should watch Syriana if you haven't already seen it. It's a great film, revolving around American and corporate foreign policy in the middle east.

Full Metal Jacket is about the Vietnam war. This isn't the Army it's the Marines an entirely different branch of the military. Many of the people in the Vietnam war were drafted, or joined so that they had more options in choosing the branch they wanted to serve in. Lots of people didn't want to join the military but they didn't have a choice. Many people in the military during this war were not mentally fit but drafted regardless. Also events like Gomer Pyles suicide are the reason corporal punishment isn't used in the military anymore.
They should still use corporal punishment while using discernment, and draft individuals that meet a higher standard.

The reason "Pyle" was always smiling is because the character was supposed to be 'slow'. The guy clearly had mentaI issues. But when the draft was in full effect, the military didn't care. They just needed new bodies to be cannon fodder.
Your father hit the nail on the head. The Vietnam war messed up a lot of boys. Many of the mental problems we never learned about in WW2 were exposed in vietnam. If I could recommend another great movie it’s “Once Were Warriors”.

I recommend Apocalypse Now as well. Also, I wonder if you noticed that when Joker killed that girl, the camera held onto him until the peace symbol that he wore throughout the war was obscured from the camera? I wonder what your opinion on that was?
Actually, 25% of the battlefield evacuations in WWll were for "battle fatigue" or "combat neurosis". In Vietnam, thousands of soldiers went to the shrink to complain about the morality of the war and they were all diagnosed with "personality disorder". In other words, military psychiatrists abandoned their professional ethics and were aligning themselves with military command. To hide this massive psychiatric corruption, the US Department of Defense destroyed all the military psychiatric records from the Vietnam War. I am a Vietnam veteran of the Tet Offensive.
One thing to know about US Marines...you should never call them "soldiers" or talk about them being in the "Army". Marines STRONGLY prefer that you call them "Marines" and that you talk about them being in the "Marine Corps". Just a tip to keep you out of trouble for any time that you may find yourself in the company of any US Marines.
Also...I have never seen it specifically stated by Kubrick anywhere, but Private Pyle is a clear representation of a real program that the Defense Department ran in the 1960s. It was called "Project 100,000" and it was a test to see whether the mental and physical parameters for serving in the US military could be widened to make the pool of potential service people larger. Between escalation in Vietnam and all the other military commitments of the Cold War in those days, the military was concerned about a shortage of people to serve. So they started testing whether recruits who were normally just a bit below the normal standard for IQ, or emotional stability, or physical fitness could be turned into effective military personnel. Forrest Gump is another example of a movie character that served in the military under this program.✌
If you are about to go serve in the Egyptian army, I expect you to do very well.. Remember serving your nation in the military is an honor, and you are serving to protect those who can not serve. You go so others can live their lives of peace, you sacrifice so others, your family, your friends can live their lives in safety and security. It is noble service, it is honorable and it is unfortunately still needed, for there are still those out there who would see the world burn to achieve ideological, political or social goals. I pray for safety and peace for all of us on this little blue ball, but that can only be guaranteed by those who serve.

Yeah man, like you said, much of R Lee Ermey's lines were just himself. He was a real life Marine Corps Drill Instructor. He was originally hired to be the military consultant on the film. But after seeing the "recruits" not taking their roles seriously enough, he put on his uniform and put the fear into them. He was promoted to Sgt Hartman immediately.
I remember watching a video saying he was not considered for the role and was turned down, then he put on a show for Stanley to watch him be his drill instructor whether he liked it or not and Stanley was floored and hired him immediately!
@@myegyptiandadreacts4824actually, R. Lee Emery was hired as a consultant to train the guy hired to play the role. (The machine gunner in the helicopter scene shooting civilians was the guy originally hired to play that role.) Emery retired from the Marines as a Staff Sergeant, and was a drill instructor toward the end of his career. At some point, he got on set and demonstrated how the actor should approach the role. When Kubrik saw him do this, he gave Emery the part and moved the other guy to another role.
After the movie came out, many veterans said that this was the most realistic portrayal on screen. The Marine Corps were so impressed that they promoted him post-service to Gunnery Sergeant. (I think he is the only person they every did that for. )
Funny thing is that as ruthless as he was as a DI and in this movie, he was the opposite in real life. Many that knew him or met him said he was a kind person that was a pleasure to be around.

What America achieved for south Korea is what America was trying to achieve for Vietnam.
But bungled it up on a bunch of ways. South Korea could be defeded from three directions, but South Vietnam was wide open.

2 of my best friend's (brothers) dad was a Marine Drill Instructor in the early to mid 60's. They did talk like that. My friend's dad had cassette tapes of Marine Drill Instructors yelling at their recruits.
The basic training part of the movie is what was called 'bastardization'. Hazing, humiliation, verbal and physical abuse. I don't know about other countries but in Australia there was huge reform to remove this as it was deemed more detrimental to cohesion of the armed forces. There was also a lot of cases of rape and other fucked up things that lead to soldiers committing suicide.
That's good. Hope they reform here some day as well.
There was definitely a reform after the Vietnam War you can no longer hit or Haze or any of that stuff. You will be subject to UCMJ (Unified code of military justice) for doing stuff like that, most likely serve jail, running the same schedule for waking up and eating and working while breaking big rocks into little rocks
Gunny was an actual marine drill sergeant. I met him years ago when I served at an event. He couldn't have been more humble and kind to my wife and I. He was more interested in my service than talking about his own. He was a great marine and man. RIP Gunny.

I love how you didn't edit out the language! He didn't turn anything up a notch, he's just being a Marine Corp Senior Drill Instructor of which he was during the Vietnam war.
This is the US Marines. I went through OCS which was a school to train enlisted with a college degree to be trained by Marines so the recruits can be officers. They were hard but fair. Their goal was to see who would give up with harsh conditions. They never hit anyone. They also wanted to see if there was team unity as in if one member was faltering, another one would help out. We did have some who did a Drop On Request as they couldn't handle the pressure.
Pretty true to life, balanced with We Were Soldiers. Had multiple family in this war. The drill instructor was the real thing ... that was his job long before he became an actor.
Gunny was a former Marine Corps Drill Instructor. He already knew how to play the part perfectly. In real life, there would be 4 Drill Instructors per platoon. The Gunnery Sargent would be the Senior DI. You can I density a Senior DI by the black duty belt he wears.
Fun Fact: They didnt tell the actors that they were getting their heads shaved for real so the pissed off looks are Genuine
1. There are always more than one CC in boot camp (at least in the Navy) where partially recruits can't be abused. Verbal abuse is one thing but physical was a NO GO.
2. Vincent D'Onofrio played the Bug in MIB and had to put on 50lbs for this role
3. Hardman was out of control. Others outside his recruits would have noticed and he would have been held accountable.
4. "I don't know, but I've been told. Eskimo pussy is mighty cold." was used in my Navy recruit company in 1981.
5. In the US Navy real live ammo was always accounted for, and Pyle wouldn't have had it on his person in the head.
6. The lights in the head are always lit. (lighting I suspect).
7. "Blanket parties" were a real deal. We didn't have one because we didn't have a Gomer Pyle.
8. The hooker in Saigon is just distracting them so the motorcycle guys can steal the camera. I saw that happen in the Philippines.
9. "I wouldn't shit you, you're my favorite turd" I've used that. 🤣
10. Even by Hollywood standards, Kubrick went overboard with excessive bloodletting.

One of the things the Marine Corp does in basic training is teach the USMCs "language"......the bathroom is "the head" walls are "bulkheads", etc.
In this language, rifles are NEVER called "guns".
Somebody in the platoon must have screwed up, and Hartman is pointing out the error
Together with "The Deer Hunters" and this is the most compelling war (or anti-war) movie from the American´s POV. The final scene with the sniper is almost unbearable - the stuff that nightmares are about.
The battle for Hue during the Commie counterattack in 1968 was the worst.

We lived in Cario Egypt 1990 to 1993 in the city of Heliopolis..
MY father worked for General Dynamics land Division to build a Abrahams Tank Plant..
We loved living in Egypt and the people..
We miss it, but we have alot of great memories living there..

During the making of this movie, R. Lee Ermey wasn't in the movie, he was working behind the scenes as the movie's military advisor giving them advice on how to portray Marines.
Someone noticed that he would be perfect for the part so they gave him the role of Drill Instructor in the movie.
The reason R. Lee Ermey was so good as a Drill Instructor in the movie was because he was a real Marine Corps drill instructor. He wasn't really acting, he was just being a Marine Corps Drill Instructor.

I was in the Marine Corps in the late 70s and Drill Instructors in boot camp spoke to and treated everyone like that.

Drill Instructors wanted to ensure nothing would scare you or make you lose your military bearing under the extreme pressure of war which they knew would be much worse.
R. Lee Ermy was a USMC drill instructor in real life. He was an advisor on the set to the guy who was supposed to be the drill instructor, but they offered him the role. I was at Parris Island and they same the same stuff when I was in but could not hit you. It was hard not to laugh sometimes. and although drill instructors are mean, they have a sense of humor and know what they are saying might get you to crack.
He was a drill instructor in the Corp. Beforehand was an actor..they didnt like the way the frist actor was doing it, they fired him and R. Lee do it since

You are the first person out of all the people I have observed watching this video, who laughed while Private Pyle was being choked by Hartman. In all the other videos the the laughter stopped at that point. Very interesting 🤔
I can’t remember correctly, I think what I laughed at was the change in his face expression before and after the choke and the fact that it was the exact same camera angle/shot made it funny somehow

The “this is my rifle, this is my gun” scene seems to puzzle everyone. In the Marines (this ain’t the Army) you NEVER call you rifle a “gun”. That is Marine Corps heresy for which you WILL be punished. The little drill and song is to pound that point in so they don’t forget it.

When I was in Marine Corps boot camp in 1986, some parts of this movie was being filmed there on Parris Island. This is still one of my favorite Corps movies. The boot camp part is pretty dead-on how it was except that by the time I was in, they had changed to where DIs (drill instructors) couldn't strike you anymore. They could, however, make you wish they could hit you just to get the punishment over-with; which usually entailed individualized P.T. (physical training).
Okay this has gone on long enough. We need Egyptian dad reviews movie snacks before each reaction. This dude is snacking from start to finish every time and I have no idea what he's eating. Is it nuts? What kind? You don't even need to review it just tell us what it is!

This has nothing to do with the movie and I apologize for being so off topic but I noticed y'all enjoying a an orange. My favorite fruit. Have you all ever heard of sumo citrus it is like a tangerine and an orange or a mandarin orange and a regular orange combine the sweetness and they're incredibly easy to peel. Not to be a jerk but these are Marines absolutely not the army Private Pyle probably would have been a sergeant in the army. I don't think very many army recruits could even challenge The Crucible. Terrible all the wasted lives for war that should have had never happened. And politicians that never wanted to win the war. And when the war was virtually one they quit. Cuz after the Tet Offensive they were decimated we had that war won.
The only way you win a war is to . . . win . . . which you didn't. So, you lost.
