  • My 1989 Jeep cherokee xj takes a long time to start and cranks for a while before it starts up. Also has a bad fuel smell under the hood. Today we figure out both of these issues by replacing the fuel pressure regulator on the fuel rail. Hope you enjoy the video or find it helpful.

Mine has had a fuel smell for a few days now and a white smoke in tail pipe. Thanks for doing videos like this more knowledgeable about my Jeep.

There was so much cringe in this video. First of all was the snow, so far we have been lucky here with no snow and I hope that continues into the middle of the winter ( Past december into Jan) The second was the school bus, reminds me of when summer is over and its time to go back to school. All these years later of being done with school it still gives me PTSD. Glad you got the XJ fixed as far as the fuel leak and should be a great little project to fix any issues left like you mentioned at the end and just be a really good driver.

Did you see in your video where after you replaced the O-rings and started the vehicle fuel ran out for a few seconds? If not check it out. Probably the O-rings setting, but I would still keep an eye on it in the future. I have intermittent leaking stream of gas with mine. Glad I saw yours, I'm going to video mine to see if it leaks initially after replacing the O-rings as well.

The ECU just needed to adapt to the new mixture. Mine did the same whenever you change the injectors or drain the fuel etc. but after 36/33 years the 87-90 O rings are for certain ending their effectiveness. Bet it cleared up, at least smoke wise after a bit. Unless of course the grommet you rigged isn’t effective.

I am so confused because I don't have this at the end of my fuel rail??? Where could it also be located?

My '96 jeep gets pretty smoky as well, especially when it's cold out. I don't think it's burning oil, but it might be burning coolant. After I got many things fixed on it, from the radiator to the water and power steering pump, but nothing regarding fuel I don't believe. In the first month getting it back from the shop, it drank a whole gallon of coolant (the shop completely filled it up while they had it). Then the coolant level seem to stabalize, maybe topping it off for the next month or two. Now having it for a year I haven't been paying to much attention, but it doesn't seem to be chugging coolant anymore. I daily it and it has plenty of power, and the smelly exhaust and a lot of smoke in the cold, doesn't seem to affect the performance for me.

my 02' 4.0L had the same issues and it came down to a cracked head... Hope this is not your issue. It's been a PITA to replace... The long crank was a bad check valve on my fuel tank... Good luck with it man!

Check all your vacuum lines. I would start there. Maybe you got a bad new regulator

I can't believe you let this poor thing see snow. You should probably just ship it out to me in California to make sure it's properly taken care of...
