Roglic should worry mostly about his teammates willingness to work for him....a guy like Vlasov doesn't seem to think he is a lesser rider and I doubt Hindley does.....
yup, which is ridiculous and part of the possible problem and management needs to make it clear, although even if it's clear they could just drop at certain times even if they're not exhausted simply because they don't want to work for Roglic. However, when a rider has four grand tour wins and they only have one or none it should be clear who the captain is.
@@TheWorldisaLIE2 Yes, and the teams are not exactly powerless over their riders if they refuse to follow orders - You do as you are told by the guy who writes your checks - Same as for the rest of us normal workers
@@kingjasko no, when the team owner and management hire a new leader that is the main rider they want to win and has the most likely chance of winning the team is expected to do their job and do what they’re told. they are employees of the team. and they should already respect him because they have raced against him previously and know his previous race stats and on paper both by his race history and almost certainly his physical properties on paper are better than everyone else on the team. Cycling is a team sport and the team is expected and required to work for the captain that has the highest probability of winning because of his physical attributes. If they don’t work for the captain and don’t do it to an expected standard then the team will not renew their contract and can also bar them from races until their contract is up. “put out or get out”
Roglic's issue is that he is seems TODAY to be pretty equal to Vlasov, Hindley and Dani Martinez. This will be an issue as all of those riders will have their own ambitions for TdF Glory. We see this every year in UAE with Ayuso and Almeida (and Del Toro has also entered the chat), but Pogi is so spectacularly superior to all of them, its very easy to get them all in line. If the performance envelope is closer between the Roglic as the TdF leader and his gregarios, then there will be issues in the TdF. The appalling lack of communication that Bora showed in the TTT shows major problems in his communication on the road- I am sure that none of his teammates enjoyed being dropped like a bunch of juniors and they might feel some kind of way about that, especially when Roglic then gets flicked at every serious climb both by dudes he should beat (Plapp, Buitrago, Skelmose) as well as the super-talented young bucks Remco, McNulty and of course Jorgenson. His lack of celebration for Vlasov's stage win does not give a lot of confidence either- I have a feeling that there is rot in the morale under the slick marketing and cool kits we see from Bora ... The man is under significant pressure as well as he bought himself out of a contract with the best team in the world, stepped into a huge new, multi-year contract and is the single most important factor for RedBull is coming on Board as a major sponsor. At Visma he was part of a massive machine with multiple stars to share the load. At BORA , he IS the show and this might have weighed on him this winter more than others... I think its fair to also say that there may be some elements of the Visma training protocols that he is missing- While Visma only recruits highly talented and very professional riders, they all seem to get demonstrably better very quickly, and people who leave the team seem to lose 50watts- Visma are the very best at getting riders to fill very specific roles at the very top of their physical capacities in a stage race and apart from WvA, the riders don't seem to chase individual glory- That could be down to their monster budget and things as small as an extra guy to hand up bottles and gilets, use of apps like eat my ride to manage their nutrition hour by hour, extensive use of altitude camps and of course their pioneering use of ketones. Either way those 40-50 watts of difference will be more important at 34 than at 24. Roglic has been dragged into the Ardennes campaign as a direct result of his poor showing here- As a former L-B-L winner, if he is still trash at the end of those races he can legitimately panic. But for now I think that he is experienced enough to know (a) exactly what is wrong with him and (b) How to fix it. It remains to be seen if he or his team has what is takes to do both
I agree with most of it but 40-50 watts difference is surely a mile off, that is the kind of difference I would image between froome in 2016 and now not Roglic from Jumbo to Bora.
He definitely in his first performances for Bora seemed equal to his "gregarios". Last year he wasn't beat except for by his teammate in La Vuelta in a whole season. So he should still be above everyone in the order. But his form definitely needs to pick-up in order for him to remain the superstar leader like Pogi and Vingegaard are at their teams. What the yellow bees or wasps have been doing is extraordinary, them having left the French anti-doping group due to ketonen. Due makes me wondering how much of a difference that makes. It's nuts to see how quickly cyclists get better at Visma.
How could it be ? He barely beat G. at the Giro last year ! He doesn't stand a chance against Vingo if he's healthy. Already at the Dauphiné in 2022 Vingo was stronger than him.
I may be a bit old school here, but it's March. Plenty of time to get the form right for July. For example, your compatriot and greatest ever American rider Greg Lemond would often find himself struggling at this time of year, only to be dominant during July.
are we making too much of stage 8? Maybe he realized he isn’t going to podium and just took it easy, first race of the year as a good training week and start the build for July? How far out are the pros hoping to peak?
I'm with you on this. Primoz should be concerned seeing how he stacked with the rest of the field. His coach said that he has the same number as last year, but as you see, everyone is upping their game. If he was competitive, is one thing. But he was unanimous, almost doesn't matter in the battle of GC. All this hype about Primoz and Bora turned out to be a dud. He might smile here and there, and say he doesn't have to win PN, sure that's true. But he wasn't even competitive. And to add to an insult, he got beaten by his old team with a guy who was hired to replace his slots at Visma. And on his first outing with his new team, he beat Primoz. And he wasn't even part of the mountain domestique for Jonas at TDF. Forget about competing with Jonas, this guy was probably the 4th climbing roster for Visma and he still outclimbed Primoz. His power number on the last stage climb was 6.5-6.8 ish. I don't buy if Bora secretly wasn't disappointed by his first outing with the team. They admitted that they expect a bit better from Primoz. I think the pressure is going to start mounting slowly. Yeah, he doesn't need to win anything, but at least be competitive. Don't forget, he was the "winning machine" at Visma. And I'm sure, Bora paid a blockbuster deal, not only because now they'll have a legit GC contender, but also because he brings more wins. Now suddenly is OK to be anonymous? yeah, I don't buy it. He must be a bit concerned. From Tadej to Jonas, to Remco .. they are showing a level higher than him. Gosh, even Plapp can out-climb him. 🤣 I'm beginning to be concerned about Primoz. Is he getting the "new team syndrome?" Some stellar rider performs well with their old team, then when they move, suddenly things aren't clicking anymore. Is he starting to experience the effect of "grass is always greener on the other side." I wonder if this is why he added Fleche and Liege to his program. Liege he will meet Pogacar and Remco. Before he meets Jonas in Basque Country. Yeah, it would be devastating morally if Jonas wipes the floor with him and his Bora jersey. So I'm curious how he stacks against Jonas and Pogacar. Is he going to be anonymous again? or be more competitive? Pogacar will be at a high level at LBL and Remco is targeting LBL. So both are going in good form. Jonas with his 50& form, practically demolished everyone.
In my opinion a major factor is psychological. Roglic did not want to leave TJV/VLB and seemed to genuinely believe that as a loyal number one rider in the VLB family he felt he was ‘owed’ a crack at winning the TDF as undisputed team leader. But pro cycling is ruthless and with Jonas is clearly in his imperious prime so there was no way VLB were going to send Roglic to the TDF as team leader. So in a situation psychologically not unlike a divorce he moved to Bora and with huge expectations placed on him and a new team to bed down into and whose riders while they are professionals, will only follow his lead if his performance is clearly superior to them.
Roglic should worry that the supplements at Bora don't seem to be the same as at Visma. Jorgenson did not a lot at Movistar and after one Visma altitude camp and those sweet ketones he is 7 day tour winner...
Someone hasn't followed Jorgensen last spring. He was already 2nd best there in the final PN stage and had some fine performances besides those (winning Oman, 2nd Romandie, ...)
Chris, how do you explain Roglic's decline after leaving Jumbo and the improvement in form of every single rider who joins them (Laporte, Jorgenson, Tratnik?
It's easy, Laporte and Jorgenson joined from crap teams where they had to spend their own money on a lot of their training ! No wonder they got better at Visma, especially with the "excitement" of joining a great structure with great riders. As for Roglic's decline ? He's been declining since 2020 TBH, he couldn't stay on his bike at PN and the TDF 2021, at the TDF in 2022, and Vingo is probably a generational champ so it makes it more visible.
@@Peakabikethis is exactly how see it. As a proud former champion he’s in denial. He should’ve stayed in Jumbo and gone into the sunset with the awesome team support he will now surely miss.
It’s still one race. Certainly those joining Visma would start to see the difference right away with their training more spot on. Roglic we don’t know exactly why his form is off because he’s not going to tell us if something is wrong or different. So we have to wait a bit longer because time well most likely tell everything. 🤔👊🦋
@@ChrisHornerCycling thanks for the answer. I find it quite disturbing though that there are such sudden and drastic improvements in performances for practically every single rider who joins Jumbo. Jorgenson wrote last year that he was very professional in regards to training and nutrition yet now he is already winning WT races after just 3 months in the new team and puts it down to good training and diet... At the same time Roglic who was always in top shape in every race he entered shows a below par performance at Paris - Nice shortly after leaving Jumbo. And it's not that he joined an obscure continental team. Bora is a top level elite team yet he finishes 5 minutes down in GC.
If you want to peak in July, you don't try to win in March, especially when you're not a spring chicken. If he stays upright on his bike this year, he'll podium at TDF. Remember Jonas losing to Tadej last year at this same race? Champions HATE losing and Primoz has all the motivation he needs to avenge against Pogi, Jonas and Visma. If only he had a Sepp Cuss
Should he be worried? In 2021 he finished 15th at Paris-Nice, went on to WIN Tour of Basque, WIN Vuelta de Espana. Could he just be on a slow build up to TDF considering new team surroundings?
This misses a lot of context. He had a comfortable lead in 2021 Paris-Nice going into the final stage, but then he crashed 3 times and finished well off the front and ended up 15th. He was not well beaten on the road like he was this Paris-Nice. Of course he's still Roglic, so there's a good chance he figures it out and no one needs to panic, but he hasn't been beaten on the road like this in a stage race since 2018.
Great points Chris ... yes, from watching P. Nice, it seems that the team/management kinda let him down. Will be interesting to see how he improves for the TDF, considering he was a bit off as well.
Chris, you obviously know way more than the rest of us...total respect, seriously. But several things come to mind: 1-Maybe Rolgic's training program doesn't have him ready to come close to peaking yet. You know better...but I've always heard that you can only "peak" for a limited amount of time before you need to recover and build back up again. Maybe his program has the peaks out of sequence with this particular race. His numbers are obviously low...so perhaps by design? I know, as an amateur, I don't understand what it takes nor what is expected, but is it possible that this was just a sort of training camp for him. On Stage 8 he put in the effort he needed then pulled the plug and just cruised in. From what I can see online he races only three times before the TDF. It may be he's building in stages (no pun intended). 2-No matter what the issue is (injury, illness or training plan) I'd be surprised if he told a reporter in an interview what's happening with his fitness, numbers, possible injury or program. Why give his rivals ANY info whatsoever? I'm asking these questions or, rather, posing these scenarios because I really don't know. But apart from Eddy Merckx...nobody wins all of the time all year long.
From a tactical point of view, they did everything perfect, the whole cycling world is asking the same question as you numbers numbers numbers. Love your show, big fan! greetings from sLOVEnia.
I am a disappointed Roglic fan who didn't want him to change teams. I didn't think he could beat Jonas or Pogacar one on one so would need a team to create a plan to beat Pogacar and get the team to ask Jonas to step out of the way for one year. He had enough political power within the team to get it done and what other team would spend that much energy on a plan? That team loves a challenge and you could have gotten past the defending champion with an agreement to work for him in every other race. Now he has to do figure it out himself and he should be worried.
My guess is, that Roglic will be the 2022 Geraint Thomas in the Pogacar/Vingegaard sandwich at TDF. And Remco won't stand a chance due to the lack of tactical skills.
Overall the team had a good result, Vlasov I think had the best results he has had in a long time which is money in the bank for Roglic. Vlasov's results were made possible because he is Roglic's teammate, if anybody jumped and went with Vlasov's attack, Vlasov could have just sat on. After the TT failure, I think Roglic's heart wasn't in it as I think the GC win at that stage (along with all the course changes) was out of reach, and we saw that on the last day, he wasn't put the sword it just wasn't worth it so he just quietly dropped off the pace (he doesn't ride for a good place, he rides for the win).
My bet is that Primos is sticking to a numbers plan with the ultimate goal of the tour. He looks fit, made some strong moves to get data, and keeping his eyes on the prize.
Now I love you again ❤ I d add that neither Hindley nor vaslov look like Good helpers. They are on their own mission. Especially when roglic has a bad day. Same for kamna who won't be able to help at long climbs anyway.
Hopefully they can pull longer in a TTT than the riders here at PN did. 😂. We never know what the stage races have coming for the next few seasons. 😂👊🦋
pretty sure the team wasn't targeting a P-N win, since primoz has already won it. in fact, he's won everything except one race - the one he left jumbo and joined bora to win. like lance, they're building toward one race, and one race only, this season. we'll see the team, and primoz, at full strength in july. i'm more worried about primoz keeping the rubber side down in july.
My take is that as Primoz is getting older, he is managing his efforts even more than last year. That's why, after the disappointing time-trial maybe he started managing efforts. Last year he didn't really smoke anyone until the stage finishes, or even in the Giro, he didn't smoke anyone until de CRI. Thoughts?
Journalist rarely ask these searching questions, because if they do, they don't get access to the rider or the team again. It's a very controlled environment in terms of access. Great work from you. I really enjoy your thoughts on racing, it's refreshing.
@@ChrisHornerCyclingbut you could gently squeeze him at the side to find out how much overweight he has ... 😁 Btw, I guess is body fat percentage still measured? And how can Jorgenson at 1.90 height only weigh 65 kgs (Wikipedia) ...
Unfortunately I'm worried as well and completely agree we with you Chriss....I know Primož and he's got the winning mentality but in this case something is going on .....the worst scenario I thought about Chriss Froom when he change the team and is all about the money....he is 35 almost so he take the contract salary and the show is over I hope I'm wrong and Will surprise us again😊😊with top results..... Cheers from Portorose Slovenia ❤️❤️❤️🔥😊😊😊😊
So...he should be worried, but only if his training plan doesnt deliver him and his team at the TdF in peak form. Looked to me that he wasnt ever really all that invested in P-N, more of a training ride and a testing of form, seeing where the work needs to be done. Will be interesting to see uf he can get it sone - long odds, seems to me
The ttt finished his chances. Finished with 3 guys in the rain and lost to much time for a one week race. If he had two more weeks he most likely would have made the effort but when you have that target on your back you either let your team mates go for stages or drag the peleton up every climb. Who knows what the dose said in the bus
its ok 10th at the end of paris nice , its only the start of season ,and he was sick , so not bad ! the team score some points . the worried is : where are the frenchies?????? njoylife
Visma makes cyclists better. Look at Jorgensen. That is why Jonas if better in the tour de France than Tadej. If Remco would be in Visma, he would be better. Hell, if Van der Poel would be in Visma, he would win all the classics. They do exhaustion management, which targets the competitors. That's where they are way ahead. Leaving that team will lower results until the other teams catch up on this new science.
We will see soon enough in regards to Roglic. But one race is not enough to go by. I am a bit worried that Jonas and Pog may have gotten better though since last year. 😜🦋👊
I was thinking this in the back of my mind the whole time. Chris asks some great questions and always wonderful insights. I think Roglic played a smart hand with his coms in the press. Honest enough… I guess. At least they are using this as a training opportunity especially with the new team. Podgacar definitely coming with some heat this year.
There's probably not just one thing, but a lot of little details that are a little off and end up making a big difference. When I watch him sprinting, he looks completely different on the Specialized than on the Cervelo. His posture is different. Then there's the training, the nutrition, the team and the weather (Roglic hates cold) ... Bora is currently not at Visma level. But if Roglic wants to ride in the TDF, he had no other chance than to change teams. Hm, we will see how much Cian will improve this year - switching from Bora to Visma.
Love Roglic as a rider & wish him a great season. However (totally off topic) riding with all green bib tights is a total No-No. Kit designer to be sacked.
Yea, he's in a bind there. First he's not up there, yet, and maybe he'll get there, but like you said, even if he's there is his team, and if not can he freelance enough to stay with JV and TP?
The biggest concern I have is the very limited race calendar for Primoz. You could argue that this is to mitigate the risk of injury and to keep him fresh for the Tour, but it also means there are limited opportunities for Primoz and his new team to perform under true race conditions. This is where you learn the most about team dynamics and race tactics. I’m not as concerned about the power numbers for Primoz specifically since he always seems to start the season in less optimal form and gradually builds up. With his 3 main rivals already seeming to show superior form, Primoz will likely need to lean on his teammates and tactics to win, and Bora did not look good in those aspects. We’ll have to see if Bora can pull lessons from this and come back with a stronger showing the next time Primoz is racing.
If your DS is good the riders will know what to do. But we have seen that not all the DS’s are good. So maybe some more racing together wouldn’t hurt. 😜👊🦋
now as a noob, weekend cyclist and has never been in any competitive cycling, honest, may be naive question: Why can't Roglic just follow Jonas' team Visma or be behind Tadej in the UAE? why cant Roglic team just bring him food and stuff but let the other teams pull him?
Then, Visma could just send multiple riders up the road on attacks, which will force him to chase, and then repeat until he cracks and then gets left way behind. That's a very oversimplified answer to situation that won't happen. Just watch this channel for a season and you'll learn about cycling! Otherwise it's as confusing as cricket.
@@charliedillon1400 thank you for explaining, but what nags me is if the other members of Visma or UAe attack, then why would Roglic need to chase if all he has to do is stick behind Jonas or Tadej, just mark those 2 as ultimately they are the Gc contenders
He lost so much time in that ttt it was really game over from there. If he made any moves he would have had to pull the entire peleton up each climb. For all we know he might love all this cash and call it quits after next season. He was seriously underpaid at visma like they do with all their riders. The thing is all we can do is speculate...was he sick, did he just give up and the team cut vlasov lose to go after stages? If primoz had of rode off like vlasov then im sure the peleton would have been all over him. We'll see if hes back in the basque or if hes cruising for the $. I see the tdf as jonas's to lose. He thrashed pogi last year and pogs going to do the giro as well. Itll be great to watch the tour but jonas will most likely win by 10 mins just like he will in basque and the dauphine. Hes the man at the moment and only getting better. That year primoz won the dauphine it was clear to me jonas could of easily won but was second in line so had to hold back. Id love to see primoz win the tour but visma and uae just have to much firepower. All remco and primoz can do is sit back and follow and wait for mistakes. Good to see hindley vlasov and dani martinez riding well though. So there is hope if primmoz can lose that puppy fat😂
Look, Vinny got rekt at paris nice last year and then had arguably the greatest season as a climber ever. So yeah, anything is possible. Honestly hoping for the best for Primoz because this is probably his best shot at the tour.
Chris, for sure, he did not have the best team picked for this Paris-Nice. You could see that something was wrong with Primoz. Otherwise, Primoz would have sprinted against Remco. An ego-thing, rivalry... Now Primoz did not. Now we just learned that he had problems with his knee. Probably, that's why Bora did not pick the best team to support Primoz in Paris-Nice??? Valid question to ask.
I belive he knows if and what is the problem and he will do all in his power to solve it. On the other hand..this PN reasult may give him advantage.. his new tactic..not to reveal all his cards even on future races and just studeing his oponents 🤔
But why would Primoz want to answer those (entirely valid) questions in public? Yes, he needs to ask himself the questions, but he doesn't want his opponents to know the answers. To your credit, you acknowledge this.
none of the teams had all their best riders at paris-nice though, visma were missing jonas, kuss and Kruijswijk 😂 and jorgensen still won. Soudal were missing Landa, UAE were missing yates, pogacar and ayuso. Roglic took his coach with him to bora, it can't have been too much of a training change
He's dared to be great. He's gone over to another team and he must of liked what they said. If he doesn't have Martinez, Vlasov and Hindly working for him, then he won't win at the Tour, but he wouldn't anyway with Visma. If I'm Hindly I don't want to work for someone else, I want my own glory, but we don't know what management has promised the other riders.
I’m definitely concerned about what’s going on. Primoz could be a great poker player. You never know and he I think isn’t one that wants to feel like he’s making excuses.
The key point here is Primoz' less than stellar teammates at Paris Nice. Visma and UAE are insanely strong teams and that is why imo Primoz and Remco have no chance to win the Tour barring major disasters for both Jonas and Tadej. Of course, such major disasters can and do happen.
Not magic. It's legal and they are better at R & D. They look at the circumstances where competitors break and recreate these circumstances with their team. That's where they are way ahead. Leaving that team will lower results until the other teams catch up on this new science.
My view on this is that he looked by far the strongest on stage 7, and if we are talking about the tour, that is the stage he is looking for, not to drop there, on the loooong and demandibg climbs. I think that remco will drop and lose minutes, but I have the feeling that even pogacar can drop and lose minutes... It was so hard this paris nice and for the likes of evenepoel and jogrenson who are more classic riders. The basque route is similar, so only on dauphine we will se real roglic.I think that his only concern is how not to drop when vinegard attacs on thr long climbs
His problem was WVA was not not his team. He was way too far out in the standings after the TT. I believe he had a mechanical on stage 8. He had on motivation and wanted to hide his fitness and play sleeper.
Agreed. The team should have sent the Tour team here to build trust, tactics and work out any kinks as a team. Instead they let Aleksandr Vlasov play an opportunistic role. This race could not have been good for Roglic’s mental health.
Let's not forget how terrible the team performed in the ttt. Losing that much time in a one week race is the end when you can only depend on two guys. If he had the lead all he could of relied were two. I see the team seriously let him down. Half the team got dropped on the first climb??? Wtf. These guys are meant to be pros. You have teams like uae just all pimping it out as a unit then see bora finish with 3 guys. I think his heart knew then there was to be no victory in that race and primoz gave it his all to reduce the damage but what can one guy do against 7 in the rain? That was the most critical stage in the race.
Primoz could be part of the best team(at least for one more year) and enjoy his title "of papa king".He could be waving and smiling at the last stage of TDF as one of the helpers of Jonas. enjoying the status of being the member of "A team!(If anyone he knows how strong Jonas and team VLB are). You could call it arrogance or you could say he has "balls(like Tratnik said). If Primož doesn't win TDF, nothing changes for him. There will be a lot of "I told you so' on social media, but Primož is not one of those rides who "live on Instagram. As usually he chooses the more challenging path'(ski jumper - cyclist). In the end he doesn't want to have another what if moment! He will do he's best and we will see what that means ,for sure! 😁😊
Power numbers, or powerful mental state, or powerful team, or powerful process? Powerful Primoz will surely have some great races this year. He is an older rider, who will find high personal power moments on the bike in 2024. The younger riders will always be applying pressure, especially Pogacar. From a personal perspective, Primoz will prevail when push comes to shove. Just not as precise or prevalent as in previous seasons. 😉
I don't think it is fair to call P-N a power numbers test, climbs weren't long enough and there was way too much wheel-sucking to showcase gaps caused from having higher power numbers. The thing I would be worried about is if Roglic has a good TDF and doesn't perform anywhere else. I don't think Bora is signing on this superstar because he can win a GT like the TDF but rather show that he can perform in anything you sign him up for not just GTs.
But I will agree that the less super steep climbs gave a wheel sucker more help here. That said roglic still got dropped which mean he has even less power. 🤔🦋👊
His coach (the one who came from visma) said he's producing same numbers as last year at this time of the year and that his power numbers in the TT were his best ever for that length of effort. There was some talk of the cold and rain affecting him and until I see how he is in Itzuila I'm inclined to believe it. Also his interviews are just worthless 99% of the time, he'll always just give the same generic answers.
But his coach could always release the numbers and let us see for ourselves. If that’s true then Roglic would not have looked so happy during his interviews while telling us nothing. 😂😂🦋👊
He should be worried about Egan Bernal. Smodering bike ring with they meger flame. Cower in fear of the night. Egan Bernals hands shall brook thee no quarter.
maybe Roglic is still building up and wanna have his piek in the big tour. Maybe he played hide and seek. because others riders and teams will letting there guards down on roglic !? So the other 3 greate ones will not expecting Roglic and gonna supprice them ???? So roglic is just playing the supprise effect,?? He is a smart old fox ;-)
I know Chris , its just because nobody would expect it ! ! He is a old smart fox ;-). nobody would have expected you would win the vuelta ..... You where also a smart fox and did it ...@@ChrisHornerCycling
Roglic wasn't that good in 2023 despite winning all those races. He had Visma to control every race for him and then he would finish them off with a nice mountain sprint. Bora can't deliver the same. I'm sure he will be fine at the TdF, but he is not at Vingo/Pogi level
Ok, you not exactly wrong here which I have brought up many times in the videos that Roglic won a lot last year while riding very intelligent and following the wheels. But he had good reasons not to be a 100% because of crashes and sickness. He managed to survive those long enough for the fitness to return and then destroyed everyone at the Giro tt. Sometimes I think it’s more impressive to win without your best form than it is to win with it. Because winning with the best form in the race is much easier to do. 🤔😜👊🦋
I think Primoz might be telling the truth about his weight. There’s an interview with him and Jonas just before last years Vuelta and they both look sickly thin. Doesn’t quite have that look this season.
There is one big favorite, Jonas. If he is not at his best, there is a second favorite, Tadej. Only if both are far from their best Primoz and Remco come into the picture. Then I would still favor Primoz because of his experience and proven track record, plus Remco’s weak team. Bottom line, Primoz can win, like Nibali could win after Froome and Contador crashed out. But like Nibali he could never beat the other two guys in a straight fight.
Nope. You are wrong about Nibali. He was the best during that 2014 TdF hands down. He dropped them all in England and then did it again to Contador on the Pave. I don’t care how good Contador said he was after he crashed because every stage before was nothing short of a beating from Nibali. 🤔🦋👍
@@ChrisHornerCycling Those were hardly mountain stages were they? Of course Nibali was a better classics rider than Contador and Froome, he was just a worse climber, which is a pretty relevant part of the TdF. There is a reason Nibali never even got close to winning a TdF on any other occasion.
First? ETA- I’m actually more worried about Primoz knees than anything else. Didn’t he end up having some type of knee therapy a couple years ago that involved electric impulses or am I making that up in my head?
He looked like he was not at racing weight yet. Maybe it was all the cold weather kit, but I swear he had a little more weight around the hips and his cheeks were filled out. W/kg then would be down in this case.
I saw something last year where Roglic said he had COVID-19. Some racers are reporting that they are not the same after they've had it. Greg Van Avermaet said he wasn't the same after he had it. Has anyone heard, if Roglic has said how it has influenced his riding or not? I'm certainly not an elite athlete, but I had COVID-19 about a month and a half ago. Some symptoms still persist (e.g., tired, a numbed sense of taste). I ride and lift weights most days, and I still feel the influence from COVID some days. It's weird.
I’m sure Chris would have answered all those questions, he said journalists should have asked, As honestly as he wanted Primoz to answer. You definitely want to tell your rivals you’re not on your best numbers. You definitely want to tell your rivals you’ve been sick and haven’t trained as you would have liked. 🤮🌯

I think its fair to also say that there may be some elements of the Visma training protocols that he is missing- While Visma only recruits highly talented and very professional riders, they all seem to get demonstrably better very quickly, and people who leave the team seem to lose 50watts- Visma are the very best at getting riders to fill very specific roles at the very top of their physical capacities in a stage race and apart from WvA, the riders don't seem to chase individual glory-
That could be down to their monster budget and things as small as an extra guy to hand up bottles and gilets, use of apps like eat my ride to manage their nutrition hour by hour, extensive use of altitude camps and of course their pioneering use of ketones.
It remains to be seen if he or his team has what is takes to do both
Well said
I agree with most of it but 40-50 watts difference is surely a mile off, that is the kind of difference I would image between froome in 2016 and now not Roglic from Jumbo to Bora.
Yes it's not time to panic just yet
He definitely in his first performances for Bora seemed equal to his "gregarios". Last year he wasn't beat except for by his teammate in La Vuelta in a whole season. So he should still be above everyone in the order. But his form definitely needs to pick-up in order for him to remain the superstar leader like Pogi and Vingegaard are at their teams.
What the yellow bees or wasps have been doing is extraordinary, them having left the French anti-doping group due to ketonen. Due makes me wondering how much of a difference that makes. It's nuts to see how quickly cyclists get better at Visma.
Seems like everyone who leaves loses 50watts? It's the RaboBank juice.
I am sure that Roglic will be at his best in July, but not sure that is enough.
I really hope so😊😊😊
How could it be ? He barely beat G. at the Giro last year ! He doesn't stand a chance against Vingo if he's healthy. Already at the Dauphiné in 2022 Vingo was stronger than him.
Nah, sweet three year contract at Bora before retirement. Should stick to any race without Vingo or Pogi
Exactly. That’s what I worry about for Rog. 😳🤔🦋🤞
@@JosesAmazingWorldsRight, he's sure to do better than Froome too ;-)
I may be a bit old school here, but it's March.
I'm beginning to be concerned about Primoz.
Yawn more conspiracy BS
Roglic needs to get his team's respect to work for him. Check in with Tony Soprano for some tips.
😂👊🦋
If you want to peak in July, you don't try to win in March, especially when you're not a spring chicken. If he stays upright on his bike this year, he'll podium at TDF.
Remember Jonas losing to Tadej last year at this same race? Champions HATE losing and Primoz has all the motivation he needs to avenge against Pogi, Jonas and Visma. If only he had a Sepp Cuss
Should he be worried? In 2021 he finished 15th at Paris-Nice, went on to WIN Tour of Basque, WIN Vuelta de Espana. Could he just be on a slow build up to TDF considering new team surroundings?
he finished 15h only due to multiple crashes in the last stage. He was in top shape and in the race lead after the penultimate stage
That’s what I said more less 😂👊🦋
I stand corrected, yet still have confidence he'll be ready at TDF@@michiem9903
Great points Chris ... yes, from watching P. Nice, it seems that the team/management kinda let him down. Will be interesting to see how he improves for the TDF, considering he was a bit off as well.
Maybe it's time for a reality check. He barely won the Giro, was saved by Kuss really. Pog and Vingegaard don't struggle against G in a grand tour.
Chris, you obviously know way more than the rest of us...total respect, seriously. But several things come to mind:
1-Maybe Rolgic's training program doesn't have him ready to come close to peaking yet.
👊🦋
Agreed - he seemed all in at first and then the TT performance took some wind out of his sails.
Top riders having a bad day/week on occasion restores my faith in the sport

My bet is that Primos is sticking to a numbers plan with the ultimate goal of the tour. He looks fit, made some strong moves to get data, and keeping his eyes on the prize.
Agreed.
I really hope that he is just all in for the TdF and that's what explains his form. Bora or Primoz are never gonna admit it if it is so
They have said that July is the main objective. 🤔🦋👊
pretty sure the team wasn't targeting a P-N win, since primoz has already won it. in fact, he's won everything except one race - the one he left jumbo and joined bora to win. like lance, they're building toward one race, and one race only, this season. we'll see the team, and primoz, at full strength in july. i'm more worried about primoz keeping the rubber side down in july.
@chrishorner you misspelled "Worried" in the title.
Thanks I’ll let Garrett know 👊🦋🦋
My take is that as Primoz is getting older, he is managing his efforts even more than last year.

@@ChrisHornerCycling Maybe it's psychological. He feels subconscious guilt over what he did to Sepp in the 2023 Vuelta.
So...he should be worried, but only if his training plan doesnt deliver him and his team at the TdF in peak form.
Looked to me that he wasnt ever really all that invested in P-N, more of a training ride and a testing of form, seeing where the work needs to be done. Will be interesting to see uf he can get it sone - long odds, seems to me
Weird for a guy that a couple months before dropped his teammate unnecessarily and said in the interview that he always enters the race to win
Quite a change compared to last year though, and then he came back from injury. (Can’t be his trainer/coach,he moved teams with him)
The ttt finished his chances. Finished with 3 guys in the rain and lost to much time for a one week race. If he had two more weeks he most likely would have made the effort but when you have that target on your back you either let your team mates go for stages or drag the peleton up every climb. Who knows what the dose said in the bus
Roglic will certainly miss having a bunch of “smaller” wins if the TdF doesn’t go really really well. 😳🦋🤞

Do you have a link for that interview 🤔

Visma makes cyclists better. Look at Jorgensen. That is why Jonas if better in the tour de France than Tadej. If Remco would be in Visma, he would be better. Hell, if Van der Poel would be in Visma, he would win all the classics. They do exhaustion management, which targets the competitors. That's where they are way ahead. Leaving that team will lower results until the other teams catch up on this new science.
Nah its the visits to the visma laboratorium that does the trick
@@mariusilerd9581 Your right and all the others teams only have cokies and milk, you are good.
We will see soon enough in regards to Roglic. But one race is not enough to go by. I am a bit worried that Jonas and Pog may have gotten better though since last year. 😜🦋👊
Roglic in the interview about his team: "not to push them" - he almost said "yet" - there I think the answer lies.
Or could it be he is just getting older which is why Visma let him go?
Bingo! They have a younger, faster climbing thoroughbred in the stable that is a proven repeat winner at the biggest and most lucrative race.
Eh? The livery is all changing to Red Bull in time for TdF
Nope. White bibs are the only real problem.
Change is coming. 😜👊🦋
To be honest I absolutely hate the black bibs. I think It makes a lot of sense to be on the team's color. Even white bibs hahahaha
There were some reports of him being affected by the cold and getting hypothermia idk how hard it affected him
I trained a lot as an Amateur. And i sometimes had really good days. ( Relatively speaking 😅 ) But i could not plan those days.
As with a-Remco . . . Roglic seems to always be the subject of 'Worry & Concern'.
He recently add new races to his program. Ardennes classics.
If your DS is good the riders will know what to do. But we have seen that not all the DS’s are good. So maybe some more racing together wouldn’t hurt. 😜👊🦋

now as a noob, weekend cyclist and has never been in any competitive cycling, honest, may be naive question:
Why can't Roglic just follow Jonas' team Visma or be behind Tadej in the UAE? why cant Roglic team just bring him food and stuff but let the other teams pull him?
🤞🦋👊
But why would Primoz want to answer those (entirely valid) questions in public? Yes, he needs to ask himself the questions, but he doesn't want his opponents to know the answers. To your credit, you acknowledge this.
none of the teams had all their best riders at paris-nice though, visma were missing jonas, kuss and Kruijswijk 😂 and jorgensen still won. Soudal were missing Landa, UAE were missing yates, pogacar and ayuso.
Roglic took his coach with him to bora, it can't have been too much of a training change
If all the teams come with bad teams. Someone still has to win. 😂👊🦋
Very rough for him
😳🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🤞
I think it is a preparation difference between Visma team and Bora. Visma is all about winning while Bora is about riding.
No Visma LAB Ketone magic. Maybe once Bora gets taken over by Red Bull, it’ll give him wings.
Bora can buy their own ketones...
I don't know about the rest of Visma, but according to Vingegaard's nutritionist Jonas doesn't use (drink?) ketones.
Not magic. It's legal and they are better at R & D. They look at the circumstances where competitors break and recreate these circumstances with their team. That's where they are way ahead. Leaving that team will lower results until the other teams catch up on this new science.

I pray that Pippa wasn't fat shaming
@@matthillard9363 agreed. This was not a time to spread the team out. Hindley should have been there with Rog.
Even with the best power numbers, best form, great legs, best team, everything, it still comes down to luck. Missing one break, a touch of tires.....
Or an atrocious ttt where 5 riders are dropped. The team were piss poor to say the least. Only vlasov held firm
Hopefully he can turn it around. My favorite rider ❤
Maybe R. just wants to not be a favourite, there are plenty of them for the TDF.
That I don’t agree with. I think they signed Roglic to win big. 🤔🦋👍
But I will agree that the less super steep climbs gave a wheel sucker more help here. That said roglic still got dropped which mean he has even less power. 🤔🦋👊
Think maybe partly mental after not being allowed to win vuelta and partly team not as strong as visma
I think he lost interest in winning GC after the bad team time trial. He should be worried by Tadej and Jonas though, for sure.
He always has trouble in the cold rain.
His interviews give nothing that’s for sure. I have wasted more time waiting to hear from him only to get nothing most times. 🤔🦋
And I don’t believe his coach either. 😂👊🦋
But his coach could always release the numbers and let us see for ourselves. If that’s true then Roglic would not have looked so happy during his interviews while telling us nothing. 😂😂🦋👊
Primoz older and smarter he wants to be ready for one tour and that is the Tour de France plain and simple and he will be not worried at all
Primoz knows racing at a high level is important for fitness. A half assed Roglic should be better than this
lol, if you say so.
Agreed. 👊🦋👍🤞🍀
My thoughts..not that PN failoure was planed but from now on ..hmm ???
Risky to go all in on one TdF for the season though and not his style of racing in the past. 🤔🦋🤞👍
I know Chris , its just because nobody would expect it ! ! He is a old smart fox ;-). nobody would have expected you would win the vuelta ..... You where also a smart fox and did it ...@@ChrisHornerCycling
The best
👊🦋🙏
He had a muscle tear somewhere on his thigh. It's not a concern
@@invisiblescout6335
Did the treatment involve electricity though? I can’t find it online, do you remember
👊🏆🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋
I just listened to Dirk de Wolf say Remco only made 1 mistake. So you know nothing man!! 😝🤣
It's weird.
Last year he was winning Tirreno at this same time
Roglic needs a good team.!!!!
Better to have the problems now and not in July.
Didn't Roglic say his power numbers were UP since the beginning of the season ? Now he might have been "sick" recently...
🤔🦋
I’m sure Chris would have answered all those questions, he said journalists should have asked,
As honestly as he wanted Primoz to answer.
You definitely want to tell your rivals you’re not on your best numbers. You definitely want to tell your rivals you’ve been sick and haven’t trained as you would have liked. 🤮🌯
He should be worried because viewing figures plummeted after the Seb fiasco team orders last yr, massive increases in clunky bike prices, people don’t like the awkward expensive over heavy complicated junk, say something fellas before we see you going to the job center on an electric skateboard, I should know I was a team mech for fourteen years, we are so pissed with these products, scared for our riders, hookless ffs, wake up tell them we do not want claus swarb involved in this beautiful game.
Prizmo will probably be ok, but without a strong team, he will never win another one of the 3 big stage races.
Roglic team here was certainly not strong but he’s got a few more good ones floating around to recruit later. 🤞🤔🦋👊
I was thinking this yesterday when I listened watched your last video.
Roglic can not win Paris Nice how is he expected to win Grand Tours?
If he had never won before that would be true. But with his resume not winning here won’t be an issue. 🤔🦋👊
The only concern is if Roglič drop off at sunny 20+ degrees...relax guys
I know you have to make a video and complain about his form but actually he's the smart one the other ones are going to be burned out in July.
From a race in March.
Jumbo had the strongest team last year, Primoz will miss that. Visma is less strong now either because Nathan has left.
I’m concerned about your nasal congestion. Get better man! 👊
I had a cold and was on antibiotics for a tooth infection. Then I stopped taken the Affrin last night so I had no chance this morning. 😢🦋🤞
Tadje has seemingly lost a couple of kilos and his face did look a bit leaner.
chris does not mince words one bit
