  • A sense of Place
This is the story of Place, the iconic artwork by Magdalena Jetelová, also affectionately known as the "Giant’s Chair". This film features stunning aerial photography of the Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail as you’ve never seen it before.
A sense of Place has been made in close partnership with Forestry Commission England and Forest Art Works. With support from Arts Council England and Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
In October 2015, UK artist Onya McCausland will transform Place into charcoal. Watch the film to find out why the sculpture is being recycled.
A series of new artworks are being commissioned for 2016. Like us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter to keep up to date with events and developments.

Very sad to see this go, but a lovely tribute.

Thanks for your comment Mark. The sculpture already has steel supports in the main legs, which were part of the original design. As you can see in the film, as well as decommissioning the sculpture safely, we are seeking to honour the original intentions of the artist, who wanted to turn the work into charcoal. The Forest of Dean Sculpture Trail always had the vision that artworks would come and go, and change just as the Forest does.

It seems very little time ago that I remember seeing this - if not new, at least in it's youth. Sad to hear that it's going but one of the great things about the Sculpture Trail is that it is in a constant state of flux. Great videography here by Jamie Brightmore too.

Its a shame that this to be removed. Surely it could be saved, possibly by strengthening it with steel embeded into the wood.
