  • Ken Susi (Unearth & Fluence Product Manager) sits down to discuss the key features of the Fluence Single Width Strat pickups vs a standard wire-wound coil. The electric guitar pickup has been wound since 1934. 80 years later, we’ve unwound it. Original and totally re-imagined, Fishman Fluence pickups are free from the hum, noise, and frustrating inductance issues that plague even the most coveted wire-wound pickups-revealing pure, uncorrupted and musical tone.
    In this video, Ken will go through each feature and show you how using Fluence can benefit your playing & tone.

    I’ve had a set of Fishman Fluences in my partscaster for over four years now and have performed over 1,000 shows with them. My favorite feature that you didn’t mention in the video is the consistency of volume between positions 1/3/5 and 2/4. With my old pickups, I was always having to ride the volume knob to maintain a similar output. The Fluences make my life on stage so much easier. I love the low noise floor (great for venues with bad grounding), and the two voices allow me to use just one guitar for the entire show! Much love from an avid fan! ❤️

      @@finoroverato7640 On this particular partscaster, I am still using old-school 9-volt battery tech to power the Fishman Fluence pickups. Pre-Covid-Lockdown, I was replacing the 9v battery every three months or so. Of course, YMMV depending on your playing frequency/length.
      On my Tele equipped with the Greg Koch signature Fluence set, I charge the battery pack every two months.

    I wish you would release a set of Fishman Single Width pickups with modern pole piece radius. The staggered pole pieces you provide are like replacements for vintage guitars which had a wound G. Some of us use modern Strats with a compound radius which is slightly flatter, and there are volume issues between the strings because of the non-adjustable pole pieces on the pickups. Considering that Fluence is modern technology, it might be a good idea to release a set of single width pickups for modern spec guitars.

    How important is the height adjustment on these pickups? Are they more like Lace Sensors, or more like traditional pickups with regard to magnetic pull on the strings?

  • @stephenpertesis6738
    @stephenpertesis6738 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Why is the G pole piece high? We have unwound "G" strings these days, so...it's the only thing that stopped me from buying it and, after experiencing how badly the Dimarzio Cruiser is, I'm in the market again. So, maybe there's a proprietary reason for the height, but, if not, I still won't consider. Sounds great on your demo though!

    I know this is probably a weird question..... but coming from les paul/sg’s could I get 3 volume knobs instead of the tone knobs? I like to set my neck pickup as my clean and the bridge as my dirty tone.

    • @brandonrose1818
      @brandonrose1818 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you can do that. One way is run the leads from the pickups to the volume pots first and then solder the outputs from the pots to the switch in their respective positions. Then, run the output from the switch to the output jack. Haven’t tried this myself but years of fiddling with guitar mods incline me to believe that it will work the way you want it to!! 👍

    may i suggest, SSS type for strat but! In the bridge single coil type i hope there's a Humbucker mode maybe another switch to engage this system without sacrificing the 1st and 2nd voice in the bridge hope you get my point...
    Here's my suggestion..
    On the bridge position,
    There are 4 variation
    The 1st and 2nd voice (single coil mode)
    And the Humbucker mode (another switch to engage this mode)
    (with 1st and 2nd voice)

  • @5urg3x

    The problem is when you use the volume control, the sound doesn’t really change...it’s the same sound just quieter. With passives the sound completely changes. If you’re someone who likes to use the volume knob to get tonal control over your sound, don’t get these pickups. If you’re someone who doesn’t do that, and you play at full volume all the time, then you’ll probably like them.

    • @Phloored
      @Phloored 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      They have great Dynamics. It you are distorted and you ride your volume down it will clean up, you just won't lose any treble. The Dynamics are very good.

    • @5urg3x
      @5urg3x 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Phloored There’s too much high end already, even with it at full…I didn’t care for the Fluence pickups, just my opinion though. I like the fact that passives have volume controls that changes the sound and rolls the high end off along with the gain. I think I will always be a passive pickup kind of player.

    • @Phloored
      @Phloored 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well to each their own. With a less Paul on a neck pup the loss of high end clarity is a real concern for me and with the fluence classics that is solved. Plus the single coil sound is really great so there is that (noiseless) versatility. I have not used the singles coils so i will reserve my opinion on those. The classics offer some really really great sounds along with versatility. In response to your original statements about the sound not changing, I'm hearing all the changes i usually get with the volume knob adjustment, just no loss of high end, so i can get some clean sounds. I can also use my tone control to tame the highs if desired. Anyway, to me these are a massive improvement and welcome change to the guitar pickup world. Rest assured there will always be a market for traditional pickups and that's good. I'm just a big fan of what fishman have achieved and as a current user am enjoying them immensely. I have only experienced the classic humbuckers so my experience and comments are limited to those.

    • @5urg3x
      @5urg3x 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Phloored The single coil mode on the Fluence humbuckers is absolutely _not_ noiseless…I found it pretty much un-useable, if you’ve got a decent amount of distortion / drive or a high gain amp is being used.

    • @Fishman_Music
      @Fishman_Music  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If they are standard Fender Strat pickup covers, then those will fit our Single Width pickups. The diameter of our pole pieces is a little smaller than Fender's, so there would be a gap between the covers and our magnets, but it is a small gap. The V/T/T knobs should also work without an issue.

      Thanks for your feedback! From a Premier Guitar article: "Fluence is based on the notion that coils can be applied rather than wound. Like traces on a circuit board, concentric spirals of “coil” can be printed." Our single-width pickups have one single "coil" per pickup, and they are also completely analog (there is not a digital element to our pickups or digital processing).

      @@Fishman_Music I have seen the inside. It's two coils separated by a piece of plastic. That is why there is no noise.
      As I understand it, a Fluence pickup is exactly like a normal pickup, except the coils of wire are in a circuit board. Now, you might be able to switch off the dummy coil, but then you would get the noise back.
