    To quote Brezhnev.
    We have offered them (the Arabs) a sensible way for so many years. But no, they wanted to fight. Fine! We gave them technology, the latest, the kind even Vietnam didn't have. They had double superiority in tanks and aircraft, triple in artillery, and in air defense and anti-tank weapons they had absolute supremacy. And what? Once again they were beaten. Once again they scrammed. Once again they screamed for us to come save them. Sadat woke me up in the middle of the night twice over the phone, "Save me!" He demanded to send Soviet troops, and immediately! No! We are not going to fight for them."

    The Arabs still think they won that war. If I was in the Israeli command I would have wiped that army out and then continued until their fighting ability was absolutely gone. I realize that they might have not had the numbers but giving the Sinai back to Egypt was a mistake and a huge tactical error. It gave the Egyptian people a moral boost. You always always demoralize your enemy whenever you get the chance.

    • @sarahnade8663
      @sarahnade8663 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Issue was that Egypt was receiving the backing of the Soviet Union at the time. So even if Israel chose to wipe their army out, Egypt would have just rebuilt and tried again 10 years later. Remember, the whole goal with Israel isn't that they are trying to conquer everyone and control the middle east, they are aiming to acquire what the parts of land they consider to be that of their ancestors and to not get driven into the sea.
      For that reason, giving back the Sinai to placate the Egyptians so they could focus on settling the far more culturally significant west bank makes sense.

Traveling through an Arab country is challenging, what with their attitudes towards women and "infidel" westerners... After Israel declared independence (May 1948), the large, well-established armies of Egypt, Jordan, Syria, and Lnanon supported by other Arab states ignoring the U.N. Resolution on the partition of Palestine invaded Israel which at the time did not even have an army, and heavy weapons. Israel did not invade Egypt in 1948, nor did it invade Jordan, Syria, or Lebanon. The Arab-Israeli conflict is complicated with many twists and turns, charges, and counter changes. But who began the conflict is crystal clear to any literate person.

    Israel should have never given the Sinai back. The Arabs were the aggressors in the Yom Kippur War. I understand the desire for peace that came from it, but Egypt is still a hot bed for anti-Israeli sentiment.

    • @sarahnade8663
      @sarahnade8663 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Think of it from Israel's perspective. They were *this* close to having their whole country overrun and their families being genocided. After such a close call they just wanted peace.
      Not to mention that Israel had also conquered Gaza, the west bank and the Golan heights. They already had major colonisation efforts underway and the west bank is far more historically significant to the Jews then the Sinai. So it made sense to give the Sinai back to Egypt to secure a longer lasting peace and let them focus on colonising the far more culturally important west bank.

If we had kept Cuba, there would have been no Cuban missile crisis, and the best cigars, and sugar in the world would be American, but that is not germane to this conversation. The Sinai is a part of the Promised Land as defined in the book of Ezekiel. Israel should have told Egypt to shove off. Additionally the Euphrates is outlined as the Northern boundary of the Promised Land. Basically the entire Middle East all the way to Iraq has been promised by God to the nation of Israel.

    No question about the bravery of those valiant warrior's. Sometimes war is a necessary evil to defend ones country. But what a shame that wars have to be fought. What a wonderful world this could be if only a way to settle disagreements and differences could be done through peaceful means rather than killing young men and woman by fighting wars. Millions of people have died from starvation and diseases for many long years. But when it comes to war there are no shortages of war fighting machines designed to kill another human being. No shortage of war mongering politicians that send our young men to die in far off wars while they sit back and live off the backs of those they are suppossed to be working for. No shortage of evil men who to rule the world by any means necessary. What if all that money was put into ending poverty, hunger, and diseases and finding peacful means to settle fueds instead of killing one another and making those who build war machines richer than they need to be. I'm all for making money through free enterprise and making as much as one can. But not at the expense of killing another human being.
