  • The Baedeker Raids were a series of bombing raids targeting British cities of mainly historical and cultural importance, designed to cause as much civilian and cultural damage as possible. One of the cities targeted was York, and in this video, I take an immersive look at the night in April 1942 when York was bombed.
    The main sources for this video were Fire Over York by Charles Whiting and www.militaryhistories.co.uk/york.

    Yet another eye opening video.
    As a roofer, who's run a small roofing company in Leeds since I was 17, I'm now 38, I've come across places like this constantly, things always happened underground, which is obviously the best place to be whilst bombs are dropping from above.
    The most memorable job I have was a place called Wabco, they were making brake calipers at the time, in Morley, and one day, whilst we were having our dinner, one of the old boys offered to show us underneath the factory, you wouldn't believe the tunnels that ran for miles underneath the place, with women's names scribed on the walls, it turns out that they were making artillery shells under there throughout the whole war! Which was quite unbelievable, to be honest, who knew?
    I've also got another story, which was underneath a vicarage in Doncaster, but I don't want to give too much away, just in case another War ever breaks out, always best to keep the enemy guessing, hehe.

    Just found your channel and...wow! It's fantastic and your a great presenter. My moms dad came from York though by about 1926ish he'd 'emigrated' south to the midlands. I'd no idea York suffered so badly in ww2. What a breed of folk eh...they survived Romans, Vikings and Nazis. I'm going back through your videos. I see there are a number of topics which will interest me so I'll no doubt pop up again.

    It's so fine to hear these vignettes of history that are unknown for the most part.
    Your closing shots mention Poppleton School; that's a plus for me, since my great grandmother was named Dora Poppleton!

    Great mention of the York woman confronted by a lone aircraft. For context: the Luftwaffe often sent lone aircraft on raiding missions over the UK, just to shoot up anything / anyone they could find, judging that such raids dramatically undermined public confidence in the nation's defence capabilities.

    I know I said before your stuff seems like it should be on TV but this one especially! It's basically (or literally) a mini-documentary on the York Blitz. Reading quotes from people during the time, showing some footage, and nice use of Google maps to show where was getting attacked. It's a shame this video isn't getting more attention cuz it's one of your best imo. Very well done

    My mum was working in York Station when it was bombed. She said the planes followed a troop train up from Scarborough. She gave her big LNER coat to an injured Canadian airman. Eventually she received it back from Canada. The bomber continued on down Nunney Lane several nuns were killed and towards Swan Street. I used to play on the bomb sites as a child. I think Elsie struggled during life with the experience.

    I noticed you said "gotten" at one point. Do English people say "gotten" now? I'm an expat - haven't lived in England for over 30 years, and "gotten" definitely used to be an Americanism. Is it in common usage in the UK now?

    • @Beery1962
      @Beery1962 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CatherineWarr Maybe it's a local thing then. I'm from Sheffield originally, but I moved to the Midlands when I was 8, and I don't remember my grandparents or my mum (all from Sheffield) or anyone in the Midlands saying "gotten". It was always "got" or became/become.

    • @Beery1962
      @Beery1962 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I just looked it up. It's not standard English, but it is a part of some Yorkshire dialects, apparently specific to Leeds and Wakefield. Interesting!
      I've actually seen this kind of thing before - I had assumed "Fall" (as in Autumn) was an Americanism, but apparently it's also used in certain parts of Yorkshire.
