I found a dangerous fault with my new milling machine 😳

  • Hello all, I have been wanting to buy a small milling machine for some time. I am so pleased to finally have one that I can make good use of. There's a few projects I can now do that I've always been held back on.
I can't quite believe how much grease was in the switches and how dangerous it was, I was genuinely lost for words. It would also probably explain why the suds pump was removed if it kept shorting out the switch when turned on.
Just finally, if any of you have any idea's about the reverse issue please let me know.
    Thanks for watching.

VFD will be programmable to how FWD/REV is handled. You can also configure to support momentary or latching switching. VFD manuals can be a bit daunting at first, but just sit down and read through. I converted my 1963 Colchester Chipmaster to single phase via a VFD and configured it to use the original controls. You should also take advantage of the variable speed capability.

Kim, your forward / reverse problem might be as simple as your common wire from the VFD is not on the common terminal of your switch. I have to assume you have already checked for that type of error. I know I’ve had simple errors bite me.👍✌🏻🇺🇸🙏🏽

If you have the manual for the VFD you should be able to find a programing area that will tell you how to program all the different options of the VFD.

you will need to change a parameter it can be done off the keypad on the vsd with no software required also if you install a multiturn pot and the appropriate parameters are changed you can get speed control without changing belt positions.

Kim, look up “three (3) wire control” I believe that is how the controls were wired. That is what the start, stop buttons and relay made up, so when you pressed the start button the relay would be energized and set of its normally open auxiliary contact's would close around or “seal” around the start button, keeping the run relay energized. Then pressing any of the Stop buttons would break the circuit and de-energize the relay.
To reverse a 3 phase motor you can swap any two wires and the rotation will change. As has been suggested I would think the VF drive could do that function based on a contact input.
    Good luck!

Forward / Reverse, in the manual it talks about 'reverse rotation prevention' Page XII lists it in 7.17.3 then actual page 6-197. You will need setting '0' which you can program via the front display buttons. Also on page 5-15 it mentions "When the STF and STR signals are turned on simultaneously, the stop command is given." If I understand this right, you could just fit an unlatching stop button linking both to give you a soft stop. Finally, I would recommend fitting a frequency pot for speed control. I have such a thing on my Colchester Master lathe and it so handy being able to vary the speed. All the best, keep up the good work on this very nice little mill.

belive to get rev. you push the run stop button same time that brings up a command mode. screen should flash CN0d then you push the up enter key, or the down enter key at the same time. its that way on the FSI drives and also the eaton china clones. Frr is rev FrF is forward and if not you swap any two wires going to the motor to set direction wanted.

You do nice work .The two funnel system. Of put the grease in is definitely thinking out side the box . when ever I work on something complex I use my label maker that prints on heat shrink tube and I mark all the wires ( it pays dividends) if i was doing that job I would google the motor part number and see if I could find a wiring diagram, you are just missing one small piece of info some times the manufacture may have a technical phone number I have solved more that one mystery by making a few phone calls You will figure it out that I am sure of .....

I converted a vehicle hoist from three phase to single phase (415 to 240) by putting a single phase motor on to it. That motor had the brass bridging set up similar to yours. By having the bridges (according to the wiring diagram) in a certain pattern it ran in one direction, by having them in another pattern it ran the other way. That caught me out but that is another story, a hydraulic pump won’t work in reverse. I reckon those patterns can be controlled by a reversing switch. I am no electrician and I don’t really know but that looks like a possibility to me.

Very nice machine. A couple if points. With regards the reverse, you can program the VFD for various different inputs and how they are processed by the vfd, read the manual. You could have programed it to worked with the original momentary switches, but putting the three way switch in was a better solution. The second point us, dont iver pack bearings, as this can cause damage, because if there is no space for the grease to move to the bearing it makes it hard to move, which you saw.

Most VFDs will come with the basic parameters set up in them for running a motor. You should be able to fine tune the parameters of yours to set the motor current, voltage etc as well as the forward and reverse option. What make and model is your VFD? Were you looking to use the speed control of the VFD as well or keep that purely mechanical?

I’m thinking the vfd can be set to go reverse. I’d be interested to know how you get it going .
    Great video

You may have been better fixing the VFD on the outside of the mill so you can access in use features such as speed control.

I don’t like VFD’s to be in show if I can about it. Also, they’re not exactly durable.

Can't see make and model of vfd, but suggest checking the manual for it about running in reverse.
It's not unusual to have to set a parameter to enable reverse running and/or change how the control inputs are interpreted, for example there may be a mode that would have given a latching function to the original push buttons.
Some of the cheap Asian import models have manuals that aren't too clear if you're not used to setting drives up, worth persevering though. [edit: I'd assume Mitsubishi manuals aren't too bad, but don't have 1st hand experience with them]

I have set up a couple now but this one just does not seem to want to work in reverse.
I have switched the switch wires round so where I’d toggle it to revserse that works. But it just won’t do anything on the VFD, I have tried about 6 different functions in the settings to enable it and all seem to be enabled. I don’t know what else it could be.

Mmm, interesting. If you can post the model number I can look for a manual online. My experience is with Control Techniques drives, don't think I've done anything with Mitsubishi before...
Just a thought (and in the absence of seeing the manual), sometimes you can have a mode two inputs: a "run fwd" input and a "run rev" input, where you set whichever active for the direction you want. Then sometimes you can configure for the 2 inputs to be "run" and "direction", in this case you always need the run input active for it to spin, but then for the direction the input is 'active' for the one direction and 'inactive' for the other.
Clearly if your wiring is configured for the former, then with the drive set for the latter it will run forwards and not run at all in the reverse setting because you're changing the direction input but not giving the 'run' command.

      That’s the manual and it’s a FR-E720S-080SC
I did wonder about that, I was running short of time to get this video done. I may go and have a go later with that.

@@CalamityKim1the forward reverse may have a deceleration timeout from what I can see in the manual. Have you waited for the deceleration time to elapse before switching to the other direction of operation? So you are wiring the PC connection out to the 2-position selector switch with two normally open contacts on it. One of which closes in either the right turn or left turn movement? The contact closure pulls the start forward or start reverse inputs down to PC level? So one side of each normally open contact is commoned up to the PC wire from the VFD? You could do some trouble shooting to see if the start reverse input is being seen by starting the unit in forward then jumper the start reverse to PC on the VFD. This should cause the motor to stop according to the manual. If it doesn’t then the start reverse input is not being seen for some reason.
