    The PCB is a car radio. RF for antenna, the DIN plug is for the CD changer, or XM hookup. The Big IC is the amp and the multi pin connector above the blade fuse is the connection to the vehicle wiring harness (power, wake, speaker, etc.)

    That last car on the postcard is a chevy bel air... I almost facepalmed when I heard don't know what that one is, but perhaps they never were common in australia. Here in the USA they are very coveted collecters items and a single piece of chrome trim in rough shape and need of refinishing can cost hundreds to upwards of a thousand dollars for one of those.

      I don't think I'll ever get a luxury meter such as a Fluke in my life. I once had an oscilloscope. It had one channel dead, but otherwise worked. Then it got destroyed in a fire. But it was only 20 MHz, so no big deal probably. Even then, it was a week's worth of work lost right there.

    My partner was worried something terrible had happened when she heard me shouting "NOOOO... NOOOO.. NOOOO" while watching the PC. I had to lift off my headphones and explain that it was anticipation of the Aldrin Mars book being signed by the great man himself, and I was in my own mind saying "no way", then you showed a blank page and I thought "of course, it's not signed, Dave's just teasing", then of course you showed the legends signature, utterly amazing. And what a great mailbag too, I'm with all the others here that want one of those ubber cute mini dosimeters.

    re Nixies: Don't you have to have a limiting resistor as with any ionized gas device. else as soon as it fires, it is almost a dead short and will be destroyed? Also note that the pins had been soldered to directly (vs. a socket).

    • @zwz.zdenek
      @zwz.zdenek 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      CampKohler Yes; the power supply must have limited the current in some way. Glow tubes have a massive hysteresis and normally need resistors.

    So that car thing. It's a receiver/amp chip all in one for a double din unit. I would say it's off a stock high end unit. Maybe bmw level stuff. That chip will power a few speakers, and send the signal off to another dedicated amp for some other speakers. I believe that one would also manage a reverse camera in that all in one weird connector.

      I have a few of them and some clones, all of them work nut no more analog stations around, I can connect a DTV converter box to them though and keep it true retro.
      I thought about doing an LCD mod on one of the ones that is failing though but not to the ones that are in good working order.

    • @Jerbod2
      @Jerbod2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ElfNet Gaming Well, they go for 40 bucks so it's not such a great loss to mess around with them.
      Problem is finding a proper LCD for them, I got a working set but probably pushed it a bit too hard into the case (getting everything to fit again was a pain) so I sent it back, now the guy says he didn't receive it lol. What I did do however was do what I planned: Put an LCD in there with HDMI input, then plug a Chromecast in there, put a powerstrip through the back hole for the antenna and connect everything inside, only thing left would be to have a little speaker in there of sorts.
      Once I get that working I can run around with a little TV that only needs a wifi modem and power outlet :)

    • @Jerbod2
      @Jerbod2 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ElfNet Gaming I'm actually planning on putting a Raspberry Pi in there too, perhaps even connecting that to the DVI input on the LCD, so I can switch from the chromecast to the raspberry. Then I just need to make a few holes for a mouse to plug in and a keyboard perhaps, or use a wireless one xD
