That would be typical Sandy Frank work. The characters in the original Japanese TV series this was adapted from were Kazuko, Yurika, Jirō, and ... oddly enough... Pepe.

I know it's a really dumb gag, but Tom's deep voice when he makes this quip makes me laugh every time.
I liked how Gypsy rebukes Joel, Tom, and Crow for playing ball in the Satellite and tells them to not do it again. It's an early example of her being the motherly figure of the group (before her hilarious moment in The Beatniks)

You know, I used to really prefer Mike over Joel because Joel seemed too sleepy to me. But I get him now, he's just mellow and I can appreciate that.
Joel is just really likable somehow. Though I think the show was a lot better during the Mike seasons, I think Mike vs Joel is a very close argument and I really don't think I can even choose one over the other.
Joel is a stoner
The 'sleepy' look Joel took on is from an interesting story of days of yore. The night before Joel was going to film the pilot, he stayed up all night building the first bots. All said and done, they liked the look so much Joel continued it throughout the KTMA and CC run.
As for who is better, it doesn't matter. Both contributed immensely to the show throughout its run, sans post Joel era. Mike has been with the show since season 1 I think it is, as one of the writers and numerous cameos, as well as being the author of most of the original music on the show. Joel was the creator, pushed it in the direction it went, and contributed heavily to the props shown in many episodes (he was originally a prop comic, hence the odd invention exchanges).
It is pointless to debate who was better as they both contributed greatly to the show, and both approached the host segments in their own way.

I've vacillated. I've also thought about the power struggle between the two.
It turns out I love both of those men and I think they are great at what they do!
Joel is the genesis of the phenomenon and thus defined the concept. Mike has a child like beauty coupled with a razor sharp wit coupled with a face that reminds one of a beautiful broad buttocks or a Christmas ham.
Mike has done more for UW Stout recruiting than UW Stout has!
Any drama is completely irrelevant with respect to the joy they have brought to the world!

Missed reference at 1:25:46. Joel: "Are we in the left ventricle?" refers to Fantastic Voyage, a 1966 movie in which scientists/doctors shrink to microscopic size and enter a patient's body to repair it. As part of their voyage, they travel through the heart, and the special effects look similar.

You know, as ridiculous as this movie is, you could incorporate this movie into the Planet of the Apes continuity. Dig, if you will, the picture: Japan's earthquake was brought on by the nuclear attacks launched across the rest of the world after Conquest, and the apes in Japan evolved differently than the others and still had access to, and made use of, human technology. The flying saucer is an alien scout who detected the nuclear attacks and came to observe and investigate. It watched and documented all it saw, and in the end, provided the humans with the means to travel back in time to an alternate past where the events of the POTA movies didn't happen, and the earthquake was nowhere near as severe. Goto (or however the hell you spelled it), unfortunately, was sent forward in time instead of backward, and within the POTA timestream, left to wander the deserted wasteland of future Japan, shortly before Earth's destruction by the Alpha-Omega Bomb.
I know; dumb as hell (just like this movie), but it could almost work. ;-)

At 1 hour 10 minutes the mother cries, "Pepe! Pepe! What happened to you?" He says, "I became a man, mother." Straight from John Steinbeck's short story "Flight" after the Mexican kid returns home to his mother after stabbing a guy to death in a bar.
It checks out. A character named Pepé, in fact, says "I am a man now, Mama." in a Steinbeck short story called "Flight". It's a paraphrase and a very obscure one. Points, points, points.

Man this film may stink but at least it's not uneventful. Halfway through and they've been cornered and escaped like four times.
Sandy Frank took a 26 episode (546 minute) Japanese series and cut it down to 98 minutes. So the whole film is conflict including a long (and mistaken backstory) Between the future human Gōdo and one of the higher up apes.
9:48 "He'll have himself on his back" is a reference to the slang term for a heroin addiction "monkey on his back".
They make another "monkey on his back" reference at 38:04.
Dave Robinson And "horse" is a street name for "heroin".
I've always loved Joel cracking up at the "Crime Dog" line at 49:08. He didn't get the giggles too often. It happens later in the movie too. Also, what a shitty ending for Godo. He's basically in a worse place now after helping the mains

1:17:28 is my favorite part. The first time I watched it, I really didn't enjoy it too much, Upon rewatching I enjoyed it more, but that's my favorite part and makes the riff worth watching. Joel's quip at the end is perfect. "Hurts don't it? Bye."

I'd somehow forgotten all the "huh?" and "what?" sounds that are made whenever guns are pointed or a gesture is made.
At 59:45, a "monkey pile" is when a bunch of kids all jump on top of each other to make a pile of people. Usually the kid on the bottom risks actual suffocation. I don't remember why we used to do it when I was a kid. I think it was just to see who could endure the most pain, or to establish an order of dominance or something. Anyway, it's another reference that could use explaining.
