This is because you are still transitioning from cartridges. Safety razors have an entire different technique. If you press it to much it won't be efficient. You need to to apply quarter of the force you use it with cartridges.

True... I see that there is a transitioning stage but that's my point... I don't want that... was expecting it to be a seamless transition. However, I did get my Henson back and will be making a Part 2 vid and showing how I shave. Thanks for your comment.

I’ve been using the Henson for a month and will not go back to the Gillette. I find that I get exactly the same results, but at a fraction of the cost of cartridges none of the plastic waste. I even nick myself occasionally in the same spots, so I know it's my technique and not the razor's fault.

I struggle with sensitive skin around my neck as well as the odd problems with in-growing hairs, and I’ve used the Fusion for years. I don’t love it, but it’s the best thing I’ve found to work for me. I shave in the shower. I would like to move to a razor without plastic disposable parts, so I was looking something like the Henson. Do you think this would be the best option for me?

For those with cystic acne or ingrown hair... Give DE shaving a try, tough out the initial nicks, you will get good at it! From age 14 to 32, I always used the Mach3 or Mach3 Turbo handles/blades and I always had terrible cystic acne and got extremely large ingrown hair bumps/infections even into my early 30s. The acne and ingrown hair would leave terrible scars because they got so big and infected! 6 years ago at age 32, I switched to a double edge Merkur 23c and it saved my face, no more scars! My acne mostly cleared up within a few months and I have had 0 ingrown hair bumps or cystic acne since that day. Today, it is very rare to get even a slight red bump on my face. All those years I thought I had crappy skin, it turned out I was simply shaving too close with multiblade type cartridges. I will say my face is not as smooth shaving with a DE, I could maybe do more passes but worry about acne returning. If you have sensitive skin, acne, or get ingrown hair + large cystic acne which could actually be ingrown hair, I'd say it is worth trying DE shaving. This said, I just ordered a Henson Medium to maybe get a closer shave. I have been using my Merkur for so long I figured I'd try "newer" technology. There's nothing wrong with my Merkur but if I like the Henson more and my face remains clear, it's a win right? If I don't like the Henson, maybe the wife will take it on for leg shaving... That'll save some money! Yes, you will save piles of money with a DE!

I like it, it is about the same for closeness with one pass. I have only used the medium, not the mild so I can't say which would be better. I still prefer my Merkur yet. It seems I can feel the blade a bit more with the Henson. The Henson is definitely safer/easier not to cut yourself with. If you're new to double edge, either Henson should be fine to start with. You can do extra passes for closer shaves. @@doktordok7517

It was initially intimidating when I first started with safety razors but I can’t go back to the multi-blade razors. While slower, it’s a better self care experience, it’s less taxing on the skin, it’s less expensive over time and it’s straight up a little luxurious. I’m black American so I have curly hair. With safety razors, there’s no worry of the bumps and irritation that come with multi-blade cartridges. I’m okay that there are no colored decals marketed as “lubricating strips.”
I do travel with cheap, twin blade disposables as this makes navigating TSA easier. I’d go the single blade disposables for travel but the clunky shape of the ones I’ve seen make it hard to reach some areas. I haven’t tried Henson but I’m done with that 4 blade cartridge life.

I have a couple of questions: Are you shaving with your first pass against the grain? After that first pass are you re-lathering and doing a second pass against the grain? If you’re only doing one pass you are missing out on the full potential of this razor. I made that mistake when I first tried a DE razor many years ago and did the same thing as you: I went back to the Gillette Fusion. Later on I watched some videos on DE technique, and found that a pass with and against the grain should be the minimum, with at least a little bit of touch up or a third pass sideways to the grain will give you a super smooth, close shave. Hope this helps.

Henson AL13 may be overhyped. If it's so good, why didn't old Gillette manufacture the similar razor head? The Gillette is leading the razor market for more than 100 years and they put a lot of money on research budget each year so I don't think the old Gillette hadn't tried the structure of the razor head. I believe they had already tried but it just didn't work as expected.

I just start shaving my head recently and I used a Gillete Mach 3 razor and I had a ton of irritation and a few bumps. I switched to a safety razor, a Viking Chieftain. It went much better. I made the switch because I didn't want to start spending money on cartridges as opposed to the prices of safety razor blades. The first time I had some nicks, the second time went much better. I'm still learning, it's only been about a month. I just ran across the Henson online, I was thinking about it but decided to pass on it. Perhaps you chose the wrong razor to start with. Your choice of shaving cream should be looked at also. I've watched a ton of shaving videos recently and I'm still educating myself on this safety razor. Don't give up on it, try to give up those disposable cartridges. $7 bucks for a box of 100 blades vs about $45 for 16 cartridges is a hell of a deal to pass up. Keep researching and good luck.

I'd recommend trying different types of razorblades, too. A good thing I'd suggest is going to places like Razor Emporium or West Coast Shaving and get a "blade pack" that offers a variety of blades from different manufacturers. Unlike cartridges, these blades have different coatings and sharpness levels and I'd experiment with a few blades to see if there is one that works well for you based on your skin type. I, personally, CANNOT use those Astra Greens that you had shown because they don't work for my skin and hair type, BUT they have Astra Stainless blades (or Astra Blues) and those work better for me and I can get a competent shave. You can really change up how your shave might feel based on the blade; it can seriously be a completely different shave with a different blade! Just remember that with the Henson, despite it being light, you don't need to press hard or add any pressure. The blade itself can get the hair easy enough. Just all about technique. You'll get the hang of it, but I highly recommend getting a series of blades to start and see how that works. If you need any help, I can assist you if need be. 😊

I’ve been shaving my entire head and face every morning in the hot shower for 15 years consistently, I never miss a day. My newest addition to shaving that has helped with shaving irritation is pumping a dab of coconut lube I bought on Amazon and applying it to my head and face before the using foam. It makes my face more slippery and helps the process, I also change the blade after three shaves or when I feel it slightly tugging at the scalp.
U are right about trying to shave under the chin, that is a tough area for some reason, I shave against the grain with a new razor for that, I’m thinking about buying a straight razor specifically just for that.
Shaving in the shower is better, just buy a shower goggles mirror and also a shower valve system so u can redirect the water to each shower head individually or both, I redirect it to the wand and point it at the wall on focus beam to clean the razor as I shave while the main water fall head is turned off, best shave I’ve ever done and easy to clean. I think this is right for most people, and by most, probably 90%. "Wet shaving" only really works "better" if you're an enthusiast. To realize a truly better shave than any old triple blade cartridge you need to be willing (or rather, wanting) to invest money on brushes, soaps, creams, etc. you also have to be willing (wanting) to invest the time in learning how to best use all of those products as well. You can absolutely get a cleaner and closer shave, with far less irritation using a DE razor, and in time can reduce cost vs a cartridge razor tremendously. But is it truly worth the time and money to go from 97% "clean shaved" to 99%? For some, sure... but for most, probably not. These Hensons though are a true work of art!

I've got nothing to gain here, but maybe keep an open mind about it. I started shaving with a DE razor because my electric razor died, and I figured I'd like to try the razor James Bond used in Goldfinger.
I could never go back now. I can still shave as fast as I want, but it wasn't like that at first. Once I got the hang of it and my skin adjusted, it's no different, but way cooler. It used to be a chore I wanted to complete as quickly as possible. I had plenty of days where I shaved while driving to work. Now I actually look forward to it, and find myself getting up earlier so I can drag it out and enjoy it longer. But that's only because I want to. When I'm running late, I can shave as fast as I can brush my teeth. I've just found that the experience of using a good shaving soap and a brush with an old man razor has me in a much better mood in the morning, and sets the tone for the rest of my day.
Just consider picking up a vintage Gillette adjustable or Super Speed. You don't have to take it apart, just twist it to open and close the butterfly doors. It's faster and less fiddly than the Henson. They're also super cheap on eBay or antique stores. You can get one in great condition for $10-20, and an old toothbrush and dish soap will make a 60 year old razor as good as new. I picked up the same type my grandfather used for $6.
One thing I'll say is that whatever razor you use, modern or vintage, consider getting a better shaving cream like Taylor of Old Bond Street (try the peppermint or grapefruit). Thanks for your insight and video. I've recently purchased a Henson AL13 razor myself, and I can appreciate your thoughts. I think that the Henson does take some practice/usage to get the best shave from it, and you do have to be more careful using it. I haven't cut myself at all but like you, I don't get a close shave on my throat either. But I'm getting better with more usage. I like the shaving process so the extra time doesn't bother me, but I think that I get a closer shave with less work on my entire face with my Gillete Fusion razor but I'm happy with the Henson AL13 razor and I'm not ready to give it up or retire it to the "razor bone yard!" Again, thank you for your review and thoughts about the Henson AL13 razor.😎

Love the Hensons. I switch between the mild and the medium depending on the growth. For sure, cartridge shaving is easier and a lot faster, which can't be ignored. I still use mine from time to time. For DE's, finding the right blade and honing your technique are critical. And for sure, you need 2-3 passes for that glass-like finish. The payoff is, eventually it feels actively good to shave and the once tedious chore transforms into something you look forward to. But, admittedly, it takes time to reach the promised land :)

Being someone who does own one and has shaved and only gotten one nick with it.
    1. This is a Double Edge (De) razor by design. I don't believe you need to shill out the 70$ to get one. Especially after I tried a Yaqi Mellon razor and that one only cost me like 15-20$. The only thing your paying for is the metal used and brand name.
    2. Shaving gel/foam/butter is not good for the razor, also known as goop in a can. These products will gunk up this razor and will leave you with a bad shave, tugging, or having tk constantly wash the razor off.
    3. Wetshaving is not expensive. It's alot more time consuming. Some products that work well and are on the low cost side are Omega, Proraso, Arko for soaps and creams that will work well with the Henson or any type of DE. And you need a shaving brush to help make the lather.
    4. The tool is only as good as the blade you put in. I recommend getting a smaller pack of blades and seeing which one works for you. There are multiple companies that make Mild, Medium, and Aggressive blades. Gillette makes its own de blades as well. Known as blues, and more aggressive ones as naucet.

You made up my mind, I am sticking with my Gillette Fusion and not buying the Henson. I agree with all your main points, especially about changing the blades and the time it takes. But you forgot to mention that after a shave you have to disassemble the safety razor and clean it, otherwise water will be stuck between the plates and will rust them over time. It comes down to the razorblade that you are using (and razor, too). Keep in mind that there are a crazy amount of different razorblades and manufacturers that have different blade sharpness levels. You can look at videos from Razor Emporium or Geofatboy to really get information on all things wet shaving and see how different blades work (among other things). Also, as far the Henson goes, the mild razor is not worth it and was originally marketed as the razor that women would use for their legs and such. If you want the proper aggression for face shaving, you either go with the Medium (++) or the Aggressive (+++). Combine those with a sharp blade like a Feather or a Perma-Sharp, and I'd tell you to watch out because the hair's gonna come flying off, lol. I think that the people who tried to get you on the train w/ DE shaving didn't give you solid razor recommendations or advice on blades. Trust me, start out with Razor Emporium or Geofatboy here on TH-cam and look at their videos on shaving and I think you guys will get a better idea on how to properly enter into this without receiving a subpar experience.

There is a learning curve with DE razors. It's not just as simple as changing from Gillette to Henson. You actually need to learn a new (better) technique. That takes time, but it is worth it. In the end you will be faster and smoother with the Henson than the Gillette and you can graduate to even more aggressive razors for even faster and smoother shave. The way you describe your Gillette technique of zipping around your face really isn't even ideal for the Gillette. The reason you can do that is because the Gillette is really an unefficient razor.

DE shaving is a fad in my opinion. I have bought two Rockwell razors(6C and T2). Leaf Twig, and Leaf original three blade razor. I also bought a vintage Gillette Slim Adjustable. I have a sample of blades that I’ve tried, a nice variety of soaps and creams. However, if I’m in a hurry I grab my trusty Gillette fusion as it shaves me in 5-6 mins. My DE blade shaves take at least 30 mins and I’m nicking and irritating my skin in the process. Rockwell T2 appears to be the best so far for me but nothing beats the ease and quality of Gillette fusion. One caveat, is that for an every day shave, DE razor is probably better. But when I have 2-3 days of growth, Fusion gets rid of it in no time.

It’s not really a fad. I switched to DE razors about 4-5 years ago for the main reason of price. I can get a nice Gillette 5 blade razor for $12-$15 but after you use the whopping 2 blades it comes with, you have to buy more and the 5 cartridge refill is around $25! It’s cheaper to buy another razor at $15. But what if they don’t have them in stock at your local store? Then you have to drive to another store to hunt them down or bite the bullet and drop the $25. After doing this for a year, I’ve spent anywhere from $144-$200 a year on razors. I buy one good DE razor for $100 and then I get 100 blades from Amazon for $10 or so and I’m set for the rest of the year. From this point on I only have to buy $10 blades that get delivered to my house and buy my shaving cream. Saving me a lot of money. There is a learning curve on how to use a DE razor but once you get it down, it’s well worth it as they shave through anything. I shave in the shower and I don’t do that shave 3 times in a different direction each time crap that the “hobbyists” do as there isn’t a need to do that if you know your own face and how your hair grows. Find out what works for you and do it that way. Shaving is something you do when you don’t want a beard or want to look younger due to grey hair. It’s not a hobby.

One of the important, and appealing, things about using a double razor are the very inexpensive blades. You can get 100 blades for $10 to $20. And that could last you a couple of years, depending how often you change it. So significantly cheaper than a cartridge razor.

Safety razors were phased out because the blade patents expired, meaning other companies could manufacture blades, and they needed a way to lock people into an ecosystem so that they could only use Gillette blades. Hense the invention of crappy cartridge razors.

Here is my experience using the Henson AL13
1- Not clean shaved compared to multi blades disposable razor
2-Must shave every day for same results compared to disposable razor which I can skipped 2 days easily.
    3- Cost and environmental impact
Having to shave every day means more time, more use of hot water, more shaving cream; so at the end you are not saving or protecting the environment. Your shaving cost will increase!
4- You can only compare this type of razor with the ones using the same blades set up system.
The shaving result from using the Henson AL13 doesn’t not come even close to what any multi blades disposal razor can do.

Personally, even if I couldn’t get a closer, shave the amount of money that you save in the long run, buying double edge, razors versus the Gillette cartridge razors is worth the learning curve. And overtime you might be able to get a closer, shave the more you master it.

It's answer I don't have. But I always used to remember my brother having post shaving neck rash issues so maybe this is why there is a market for different creams and razors? But with my Gillette cartridges/foam, I just never have an issue.

The Henson is garbage. Don't associate "wetshaving" with just the Henson. I tried about 15 different razors and it's easily, by far, the absolute worst razor I've ever tried. And I tried both the mild and medium. Horrible. Anyone loving it clearly didn't try many other options. The fanclub will throw rocks at people who talk shit on it, but it's really just popular because of good marketing, not good product.

    Safety razors are a joke.
You can’t even COME CLOSE to compare the two.
    Look… I’m not saying the Model T Ford was a “bad” car, but it’s a model T.
You can’t even Compare it to a modern car.
And razor are pretty much (exactly 😆) the same.
I mean, if you prefer a strait razor and consider yourself a shaving Artist.., ok. Whatever.

Yup! I hear ya! Currently, I feel like nowadays it’s trendy to “over engineer” something. A possible example would be what Tesla did with their yoke steering wheel/falcon wing doors. They took such a simplistic function and over complicated it and in the end, it kind of hurt them. I’m just a K.I.S.S. kind of guy I guess. (keep it super simple)
