Do I actually need a snorkel on my 4Runner? Definitely no. Do I like the way it looks? Yes, hence the reason I installed one, that's it that's all! I also added the Sy-Klone Precleaner for more style points! As for the commonly asked question "Do you even use that snorkel?" I just answer with "Yes, I'm using right now, that's where all the air for the engine comes in from!"
Your problem with the sy klone is that you're getting into sue worthy verbiage. Do pre filters BLOCK fine particles? No. Does it help reduce how often fine particles are passed through to your filter? Yes. So many reports of unsponsored ppl noticing not having to change filters as much bc of the precleaners.
Great information. I always walk the line due to how invasive this modification is. I live in FL and the rain and flooding has gotten crazy. I'm doing the rear differential breather. As for the snorkel I will hold off ..
Thanks. This was really helpful. I think I'll just pack extra filters. More of a concern when crossing water is being able to turn off the fan. That, and cracking the block. I travel more through dust than anything.
I just ordered a Dobonson for my Tundra. I’m sure Safari is better but also $300 more. I’ve run a cheap Amazon snorkel on my 4Runner (3rd Gen) for over 5 years and the truck has 340k. I did run a cycle style head and also felt the truck struggling at highway speeds
Volcanic ash fallout would be most damaging to any engine. Slipping on panty hose over the filter can mitigate ash effects for a short time and would need frequent changing. However you could keep a dozen pair in the glove box for assurance to get out of a high fallout area. I have often wondered about this as a potential solution. Any thoughts here by others?
Have you tried the AFE PRO DRY S filter? I am just curious bc you didn't mention it and i run it on my v6 150 lancruiser prado(same platform as a gx460). Also you could check the prefilter mesh that AFE sells, it works great for catching debris like sand, insects, leaves... Thanks for the info i was going to buy the Sy-Klone pre cleaner but i might just not do it now haha
How deep a water crossing do you realistically have to worry about before you should be concerned you will damage a 5th gen 4runner with a stock intake?
Basically the bottom of your intake and add 4 inches for the wake. So probably 2-4 inches above your tire. But I’ve seen a lot of rigs hydro locked (flooded) and it’s often because they make a big splash in a small puddle… so no splashing unless you have a snorkel.
I don’t see the resale value being a problem now days with production issues and labor shortages. How do you feel about turning the head around the other way? It rains a lot where I’m from too and can be sandy on the coast.
Could agree with that first sentence for now. For rain, I wouldn’t worry about it. I’ve actually had a snorkel when I lived on the east coast and always worried about flooding my engine but it never happened. I do/would turn it around only when I’m following someone on Sandy/dusty terrain to avoid eating excessive dust. Otherwise, I would keep it forward at highway speeds to get maximum airflow in there
Honestly your in-picking on dobinson vs arb. They both do the same. Build quality is not an issue with dobinson snorkel vs arb. I have not read or heard an issue with dobinson or arb. Seems like someone is just looking for errors
@@SandyCats I know you said you were planning to add one to your GX; Might you know the ARB model number for an AR Max snorkel for that Platform? I keep finding some for the 150 but they're for a diesel and I'm not sure if they're the same.
@@gunplaytv I haven’t switch Dobinson to Safari yet on the GX. I had someone ask before and they ended up contacting an ARB distributor in FL and received the correct part #. I honestly just don’t remember. The Dobinson one for the GX is actually for a Prado 150 series (2010+)
@@SandyCats I appreciate it, man. Yeah, I reached out to ARB via email and never heard back so I may go that route. Good to know I was on track with the 150 models.
I recently purchased the TJM (they're no longer shipping to the US). I haven't installed it yet. I will when I install CBI steel bumper, which is why I bought the snorkle. The bumper will expose the airbox intake.

Thank you, Sandy Cats, for the best review I've seen so far. You have helped me make my decision. KUDOS!

How did you adapt the afe to the snorkel?
If only snorkels looked as good as those raptor lights tho.........................
😂😂😂
What if i do not want it but somebody already installed it 🙊
Buy the same quarter panel, and then sell that setup.
Will water come into the engine when driving in the rain at high speeds using the curved snorkel head?
Excellent video. Thank you for your knowledge!
Does the Sy klone with the 4" fit with the safari or did you go with the 3.75?
Did you have to modify your AFE supercharger box to fit the ARB Safari snorkel?
No modifications. Used flex tape to join thrm
Great advice! Thank you.
How do snorkels do with twin turbo set ups?
Haven’t seen one.
How do you feel about water ingress with these? I like the ARB but we get alot of rain out East and that's probably my only fear
No issues. Spent all month in CO during monsoon season last summer and had no issues. My drain hole is also plugged.

It seems there are 2 part numbers for the GX460/LC150: *SS188HF* , and *SS190HF*
Any experience or thoughts about the TJM snorkel?
No experience. I love the look but was worried about airflow. + I am not sure they would fit with a full roof rack.
@@SandyCats Good point. It looks like a lot of roof rack fairings may interfere.

The ARB has that horrid “Safari” logo though……
I know. Hate it too… function over form though…
