    This is definitely a soap not for the beginner. The end result looked quite simple in itself, but the lather looked positively luxurious. 🥰🇬🇧

      Haha. I thought it was just me that had problems with soaps of bright or dark colors. I rarely use those colors in my soaps, but see lots of makers that do and I always wonder why no one ever addresses the fact that those colors get all over your washcloth and don't always come out.

    • @Brightwatereq
      @Brightwatereq 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@storybooksoapothecary1310 exactly! I make soaps too. No to sell but to give to family and friends. I recently made a rainbow soap for my daughter and it is a pain to clean her bathroom. At least it’s bright and cheery lol. After that I use pale, natural, or no colorants at all. They are so elegant and luscious looking.

      @@Brightwatereq I have been making soap for over 20 years now and had a business for about 9, so I have lots of experience. Every time I watch a video where they use all kinds of bright or dark colors, I think yeah but you can't use that soap as it is going to make a mess. LOL! I have never heard a soapmaker talk about that and I don't know why. They are gorgeous to look at, but give me a simple plain bar to actually use.

    I've been waiting 2 weeks on laurel berry oil from WSP and finally got to make this recipe today! I'm so excited, and have been dying to make this since you posted this video(thank you so much for sharing the recipe, btw!) It did trace & thicken quite quickly but was able to split the batch and scent half with cedar EO and leave some unscented. Beautiful color & love the smell on its own & with the cedar.

    Very beautiful, yet simple. How come it takes so long to cure? Thank you for recipe. I made some soap using hemp oil, castor, coconut oil and olive. Used the half water/aloe in it. It was my 4th batch. It is ready to try but I still have some of my first bar thatI made left in the shower. Been using it for over 2 months. Can't believe how long they last when homemade! God bless you this week and always. 🙏💕

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! The long cure time is due to the high liquid oil content. You could technically use it after a normal 6 week cure, but I think they last longer with the full cure.

    7:38 Ellen how do you calculate the amount of sodium lactate that you add to the lye solution?
    You said the total amount that the soap calculater gave you for the amount of water you use half aloe Vera juice and half distilled water. But if I wanna add powedered milk, do I need to make any changes to the amount of ingredients? To the liquids? And also if I wanna add other powders like clay; additives in the soap calculater the additives don’t go into the calculations, do we need to make any changes to the oils or to the NAOH or water, before we make our lye from there?

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sodium lactate can be added at a rate of 1 tsp per lb of oils. When adding dry ingredients, they don't effect the lye oil ratio, they are just "extra".

    LB = 25.3%
    CO = 15.3%
    CA = 4.8%

      Your welcome :). I made my own lye calculator. One of the things it does is turn a series of numbers into percentages. I was interested in your recipe so that took about 10 seconds to figure out. Recipe looks good by the way.

    Why do they need to cure so long? Can you use it before 6 mths?

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you can use them after a regular 6 week cure, but they are harder if you wait longer. It's due to the high liquid oil content.

    You didn't mention the amounts of tussah silk or sodium lactate

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The silk is hard to measure because it's so light, I use a cotton ball size amount. And sodium lactate can be used at a rate of 1/2 - 1 tsp per lb of oils

  • @nancykelly9712

    If you have added coconut oil and castor I don't think you really need to wait 6 months though! That changes the makeup of the soap to a regular recipe really. Looks really great Ellen! 💞

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! It still has such a high liquid volume, I feel like it lasts longer if I give it the full cure. But it would probably be fine with a regular cure too😉

      I agree it's always better to cure a little longer than normal with a lot of soft oils like those! Thanks for sharing!

      When you say "stink" is it the laurel berry oil scent you don't like?? If so, that does fade eventually..

    Why does it takes so long to cure

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's fine to use after several weeks, but due to the high liquid oil amounts it just gets better with time.

    I love your work Ellen, but after losing my brand new business to covid after 1 year, I find it very difficult to deal w those who use you tube channels to make claims about their soaps. Eczema, etc.. Such a disadvantage for those who follow the law explicitly.

    • @EllenRuthSoap
      @EllenRuthSoap  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'm so sorry about your business, that's super hard. I try to talk about the ingredients and their properties, and not make soap claims... It's a fine line. I love to put excellent ingredients in my soaps.
      Thanks for watching, and taking the time to comment. I appreciate that.

      @@keekeejenkins6162 When you begin a business just before a pandemic (1/1/20) and you are building from a customer base of close family only...you have spent cash for craft shows, farmers markets etc and you are unable to leave your home to market what would YOU expect to happen? Never in anyones wildest dreams would anyone have imagined such a thing to happen. Bad timing. I lost every dime spent to open the business and could not attract a customer base. The "act of God (yeah right)", left me with no refunds at all. I had to close after the first year. No capital to go on. But I have a lifetime of inventory growing old. Still cleans, however unattractive.When others make claims of ingredients which skirts the law on soapmaking, it creates difficulty for newbies. Not that I could ever compete with Ellen. She makes exceptional soap. This post was a year ago, so I dont remember the exact specifics now.

    Ellen I love your channel and soaps but I feel I need to comment on todays video, Aleppo Soap is just that, no traditional no modern, it’s just either Aleppo or not, as soon as we add things in to the Aleppo recipe it’s no longer Aleppo soap, just like amending Castile it’s no longer Castile soap.
    Pedantic I know .
