Patria Nemo Container, 120mm mortar system

- At IDEX 2017 Patria introduces the world’s first 120mm mortar system integrated with a container. The Patria Nemo Container includes all the equipment required by a mortar unit in a single package. The Nemo Container is delivered with everything that a mortar unit needs: protection for the crew, the weapon and ammunition. The container has its own power unit and air conditioning. In addition to an access hatch, the container has an escape hatch.
The customer can select NBC (Nuclear, Biological and Chemical) filtration systems, as well as the desired ballistic protection, made either of steel plates or ceramic armour. High-durability steel plating 8 to 10mm thick adds around three tons to the weight of the container. The container has space for one hundred mortar bombs. It has a crew of three: two loaders and a gunner, who also acts as the commander of the unit. The key benefit of the Patria Nemo Container is its easy mobility, which is unique to mortar systems of this caliber.
The container can be easily moved into a firing position on a high-speed boat, a ship or on a truck; the container can also fire from any of these carriers and naturally also from the ground. For example, the container’s versatile mobility enables coastal jaeger platoons to relocate this independent firing unit during a mission. This is also an excellent solution for protecting military bases. The container can also be purchased as a separate unit without the weapon system, in which case the customer can make cost-effective use of its existing Nemo equipment.

The enemy counter-artillery operator will smile when he saw this.
ikr, 1st thing i thought too.
How does this make any sense, if it could fire from the truck, then maybe useful, but the whole picking up must take 5-10 minutes easy. So counter battery fire will totally destroy this in the field.
Simple. It can not be used in conflicts with counter-artillery.
Use it for base defence.
@@jensolsson9666 There is no such thing as a conflict without counter-artillery.

These days even UAV drone operators have "wings" because they "fly" drones, it used to be only pilots have wings.. so they essentailly sit in a room or mobile command vechicle.. operate UAV and launch strikes.. and they can even do it while eating a burger and fries..at the control.. (assuming they allow Food and Drinks while doing so..lol).
Gives a whole new meaning to the term "War Games" ..its like a game literally.. the operators dun see the death and hear the screams and only see the target from a LCD panel and push the buttons.

@@CB-zt6qs unless you are talking about MILITARY drone, Civlian drone do not have the range (the TRANSMISSION range) from the pilot/operator to the drone, from Ohio to Ukraine. to do that kind of communication you would probably be a USAF Drone Pilot.. hobby drones typically have ranges of a few kilometers to maybe 10km.. also the "fuel" on the drones aka battery power, would also limite the flying range of the drone. unless you are using jet powered and using jet fuel.
@@CB-zt6qs i think there are many types of drones from mini ones, for surveillance in a few kms to mid range, mid alti ones for target spotting etc and to Long Range ones like Global Hawk about the size of a plane. i think i am referring to the more military drone pilots not the civilian ones with a occultus and a game pad in his hands.
Tse, how old are you? You talk like you were born yesterday.
Being able to make any truck into a mobile mortar system is brilliant. Putting the container in a field somewhere, making an incredible immobile mortar team, is asinine.
You're right that its use in a dynamic battlefield against a near-peer adversary would be suicidal. However, its actual use would be to provide fires from "inside the fence" at forward bases where everybody already knows where you live. With GPS and/or SAL guided rounds such a fixed system could place 120mm mortar rounds out to a range of over 10 km within 3-5m CEP (with GPS) to as little as1m (with SAL). Then when insurgents start to fire their mortars at the base, this hellfire in a box combined with a radar system to pinpoint the GPS coordinates would *be* the counter battery fire. With the radar and the NEMO system warmed up and ready to go, the GPS coordinates the rounds came from would be calculated and automatically loaded into the GPS guided shell already loaded in the barrel. Then the first counter battery round would likely already be in the air before the first insurgents round even landed. And in addition to reducing civilian casualties, the GPS guidance also makes sure the first counter-fire round lands within the assured lethality radius of the insurgent's firing spot. And if a foot patrol gets pinned down and calls home for some help, a laser guided round could be dropped within a meter or two of the point they want touched with some HE.
I love the imagination this company has!

Impressive. Can it also operate while mounted on the truck?
yes it can.
yes also ship. its also airdroppable, can be carried by helicopters or airplanes. its a STANDARD container by ISO classification, almost any vehicle built today can carry it. even trains or commercial ships/trucks.
_ajm_photo ofcourse. You could attach this to any standard cargo container on a ship or something. Set the munitions to explode few meters above the water and you have a perfect weapon to put on any cargo ship to fight of pirates in somalia for example. Boom goes the pirates.
It will destroy the suspension
@@ukkomies100 not really, you can't really use mortars against a speedboat
Like any weapon system, it depends on how it's employed. Could be great in the right circumstances, or terrible in the wrong ones.
It could be disguised as an actual shipping container, making it good for defensive ambushes
But I’m just a civilian, so feel free to disagree
@@themightyalpaca313 Probably won't happen because that might be counted as a war crime
Getting those containers on balanced ground is a pain. They would need about 30ft(10m) by 14ft(4m) of completely flat ground. They don't self settle like artillery spades after a shot or digging. They wobble on the uneven axis all of the time unless the ground is completely flat. 10ftx10ft(3mx3m) ISOs are a lot easier, but suffers from the same problem. Even a single person's weight can cause a shift. That would make this system good in prepared positions, but almost pointless outside of it, especially in rocky or sloped terrain. Also, trying to retrieve a container from a particularly muddy, wet, dirty area would lead to a huge issue with the weight capacity of the prime mover, which would have to cope with the loaded container weight and the suction of the container on the ground.
A good system would be a system that was fully stabilized inside of the container that allows it to shoot from the truck. It would have to be a pitch, traverse and elevation, free floating stabilizer with an autoloader that would probably have to be imbedded into the container. Otherwise, their accuracy on target will be all over the place, as seen in the video. That impact spread was about 30 meters, which is far too inaccurate for modern, mobile, western artillery. All guns or mortars, with a good fire direction control, should be able to put ALL rounds of a battery within 3-8m of a specific point so that they all look like the same explosion at the same time. Not worth it.
Put it on a truck with spades and stabilizers, like a crane, where you can adjust for terrain, otherwise, its just mortar spam that we would expect to see from 1970s(or 2022) Russian artillery. That can get complicated though.
A remote, auto aiming mortar is easy. Just split the control trailer and the mortar itself. Wires connect the mortar/ammo carriage when dropped off. Spool the power/comm wires to the control vehicle/container. The mortar has a manual loader(as seen in the video) with a ready rack dropped off with it. After firing, the truck picks up the mortar/ammo-rack combination like the forklifts that stick off the back of cargo trucks and pulls off. Extra rounds can be stored in the FDC/Command module and ammo trucks.
This would allow the mortars to be independent of a single vehicle and carry on if the truck/FDC container was immobilized and allow another vehicle to retrieve half of system in the case of counter battery losses. As it is now, a single 60mm infantry mortar could ruin the entire platform. Bad idea, pass on this. Its pretty much a one point of failure system with too many possible areas of failure.
Gun Operator - What about enemy counter battery fire while it's on the ground?
Product Designer - I don't know I guess you will die
corner jacks with wide feet on them would easily solve that problem, carry some marston mat to spread the weight out even more if you think you may be putting this down in less than dry areas.
@@warhorse03826 True, but, in artillery, you need to get the gun battery emplaced in about 2-4 minutes and be ready to clear the position in less then two in order to evade counter battery fire.
The strength of the unit is its ability to be picked up and dropped off without preparation. In the scenario where the soldier would uses the mat or jacks, those would have to be attached and levelled while the unit was being placed.
That could lead to a whole new issue of the unit needing to be aligned with the prime mover in order to retrograde the system and move out. Maybe a hydraulic skid system would work better. Also, armor, at least as thick as a MTVR turtle back at waist height and on the roof. Otherwise, that container is a death trap to any kind of small arms or even light shrapnel.
@@jlawsl honestly, on land there is zero reason to remove this from the truck unless it is a defensive emplacement. if you don't have enough trucks, maybe don't buy this system.
I could see it as shipboard or even mounted on a train flatbed, as it requires no support from it's carrier.
@@warhorse03826 its hard to believe this will be marketed to customers who wont buy additional trucks along with the system
So, is the idea to use this like a standard 120mm mortar in a fixed position? Like for base defense?
What’s the advantage over over the just emplacement of a 120mm in a pit?
Its fully automatic, faster reload, less crew and better protection
It can also shot when is on vehicle which are moving
It's a useless and very specific solution for a specific problem. Any army in their right mind would prefer a mortar on a mobile platform, especially since the old days of fighting insurgents are over and sitting in a fixed position as artillery is a death sentence on a modern battlefield.
Its cooler!
It's purpose is too look cool and enticed the idiots that are in charge of the middle east to buy them from us. We won't use them cuz they're sitting targets and easily countered.
This way our enemies pay us to make sure their military is inferior to ours. It's kind of genius really.
This container needs better thermal shielding and better camouflage. It is a huge target as a house. But a plus is if this system is completely unmanned.
Emplace it in the ground and camp it easily on top. Imagine having one container and three holes in different positions, rotate the box in the cover of darkness. Would be good support for regular mortars. Or it can do the work of a whole mortar platoon if you lack oersonel
THAT SHIPPING CRATE IS ANGERY!
Anything that can carry a container can carry this right? Quite interesting considering the wide range of vehicles.
A lot of small boats could easily carry like 4 of these.
The applications are quite diverse.
Mortars also have a range between 4km to 12km with R.a.p.
Howitzers have a range of 10km to 30km on average, but they are more expensive.
@@justjoking5841 The idea here may be have a lot to do with a drop and forget automized system.
They could make it smaller
and more stealthy. Wonder
if it can be remote operated?
If they could make it cheap and small, and remotely operated, then it might be an effective weapon system. But still couter battery fire will destroy this easily since they can move after firing.
@@yeahright3348 A mortar system can be installed on
a quad bike. It aint hard for one man to operate.
The real counter battery is the sensors who triangulate
and sort out noise.
@@yeahright3348 it can be fired while still on the back of the truck, so it can just do a fire mission and drive off before even being spotted
This is a modular system, you can switch to another weapon system in minutes and when the gun needs servicing it can be switched in minutes into fresh one and the game continues.
Even a basic civilian truck can pick this up as the attachment system is the same.
To anyone wondering, this isn't only meant for stationary fire, the point of this system is to be very modular and easily adaptable to multiple conditions and situations. The system can be operated and fired with on the move on top of various transports and ships, as well as be stationed as a part of a field base of some sort. I'm not one to shill this thing, I think it's plenty weird myself, I just like to clarify things. Patria are many things, but they certainly don't lack creativity...
Bad idea... It will be destroyed on the first counter fire. Radars can tell you where incoming fire came from and you will have a bomb or Barrage blowing that container apart in seconds.
It can fire while still on the truck or the turret can be placed on a APC, Jesus, look at other videos of the NEMO first
Gee you almost can't tell this is a cardboard mockup. The unit should stay on the truck, the inability to move on its own is a major flaw, what is the supposed benefit to dumping the fire unit off to become a victim of counter battery fire? I think you have missed a real opportunity here to have something novel on the battlefield and that is a modular firing system. Multiple container like objects, that can be switched out based on mission need. Mortar unit like shown, air defence unit, artillery unit, infantry carrying fighting unit. All various interchangeable and mountable on a common chassis. I had this idea about 30 years ago... you wish, you knew what I am thinking up now 🙂
What is its direct hit range? Any clues?
I think maybe it would be cheaper if we tow this mortar by ford or toyota?
Why is the control for a AOE weapon a joystick again? I can imagine morsing the coordinates to be a faster & more accurate method than using that old competition pro stick...
You know if they were to take the container and allow it to be just dedicated on the 8x8. And have for hydraulic legs. Dude they would never have to even drop it it could make generally any 8x8 with a crane arm a mobile mortar system.
It's designed for base defense
The ad makes look great. But the radar on the opposite side. Will target this platform in seconds. Thin wall box is no protection.
Nice thermal signature lol
Little coutry try keep up with you super powers.
And we do pretty good job on that!
Will this fit on a container ship so it can defend itself?
Yes. It can shoot when loaded on a truck, boat or train since its conception was to be a "plug and use" weapon system. It gives any vehicle its loaded on an ability to function as an individual mortar platform with MLSI and direct fire capability.
I gotta say, i like this system 👍

I have an innocent question, so nobody attack. Why do huge mortars exist? Why not just have small, man portable mortars, and large howitzers, and sometimes use the large howitzers like mortars as well?
Could it be moved around by any sort of truck that can handle large dumpsters?
This looks like something that could be a thing in Africa

Call it mobile but it cannot move an inch by itself. Ok.

A weapon to surpass Metal Gear!
Hmmm? Can see the point of containered fighting gear. Can’t get there to be left as a sitting target!!!
Counter battery fire not a worry
How much? I'll take 4.
Really? Being mobile means being alive. What is the point in immobilizing originally put on wheels mortar system? To make it longer to get out of the enemy response? Mortar unit needs to fire and leave the place as soon as possible. Making this coffin as heavy as possible with putting everything into it means turning it into a sitting duck. Making it heavier means making it longer and more difficult to remove it. Do you think this box will withstand the real battle where even moving tanks with all their armor are hit and destroyed by hundreds or even thousands? Do you really think it will be hit only just with something like small arms? What if it is hit with 155 mm falling anywhere near it? Will this complex and for sure very expensive lifting system still be able to load it back to itself? Will it be able to do it on a covered with mud surface time and again? Under fire? Why to invest so much into getting the box on the ground and back to the vehicle instead of turning the vehicle itself into an agile and mobile platform? All that does not make any sense at all.
Well that just looks like an spg with extra steps
Molto interessante e funzionale , ma temo che in posizione statica sia un bersaglio troppo facile
the first need to be is MOBILITY
not a good idea it will be a easy target for cheap drones, nowadays even howitzers mounted on a truck or other vehicles for shoot and scoot tactic
Handy for outposts near insurgents etc. Not too good against anyone with counter battery capability.
For those who braggs something about counter artillery fire - read description first, you will not look like idiots. Container can fire from truck directly, it is NOT REQUIRED to be unloaded, but it CAN BE unloaded. Now try to imagine counterfiring a moving target.
What is the rate of fire?
10 rpm, 5 round simultaneous impact.

Apparently the shell goes in orbit and hits the target next season.

Holy shit its a Mike Sparks Battlebox! That crazy bastard was right!
No. If somebody can tell the time of the day or the weater outside with 80% of the time correctly doesn't change the fact that he is a nutcase with some major personality issues. Anyone can come up with a weapon system that would be nice to have. The real difficulty is how to use them. And if sparky got his way US army wouldn't have used convoy escorts to protect supply convoys going between Bagdad and Kuwait. He would have spread squads with M113s as pickets and spread them for every few miles between Bagdad and Kuwait.
I see the advantage of using civilian vehicles moving these weapons point to point. Small and poor country can utilize all mobility exists already. You may not need to have expensive military transportation vehicles to create areal defending system.
And you can use normal logistics paths to move large quantities faster than specialized stuff.
Why not fire from the truck, there are plenty of vehicles that can

But if you just take a container ship full of cruise missiles and drones, that would be awesome. Thing is, it would also be a very juicy target.
@@Ilamarea the thing with submarines is they can tell the difference between a Destroyer or a frigate or a merchant ship by the noise from the propeller.. but what the submarine CANNOT do is it cannot tell whats ONBOARD the ship.
so if you send 2 or 3 Navy destroyers or frigates., a US Nuclear Attack submarine may detect them and attack them, but if you have a "convoy" of 20 container ships out of which 5 of them carried missiles ready to launch. the nuclear attack submarine would not be able to tell if the convoy is a civilian one or terroirst one.. and how can it decide which of the 5 container ships to sink. so there is a high chance the 20 ships will make it very close to a US port before the 5 ships releases its payload.

Knowing how the artillery war in Ukraine is now conducted- do you really want to be confined to a shipping container after firing off your salvo? Looks like they attempt a nod at mobility but It's gonna take more than a couple minutes to hitch and haul that thing off and clear of return fire.
The mortar is a seperate weapon system that they have in this case mounted on a cheap box for base defence. Normal mounting is either a wheeled or tracked carrier.
