    Thank you so much! I’ve been patiently waiting for my voyage & these videos have not only kept me sane but have helped me become the best prepared student I can be on my voyage! (Spring 22’ although JUST moved my deposit from Spring 21’ looking into the future of “what if my trip gets rearranged”) :’)

      This is such a sweet comment!!! Haha I am glad to be helping people stay *sane* and *entertained* while stuck at home, and it is smart to be thinking ahead for what the future voyages are going to look like!

      Not that anyone knows how this'll all play out in a year from now, but it's better to be safe than sorry!

      Jess Horst exactly! you can’t win them all, but at least you can use it as a learning experience. In a brighter perspective, waiting that extra year puts me going my junior year at 20 vs. 19, which isnt far off from the average age from what I’ve seen. There are definitely financial advantages to the situation as well!

    You mentioned not overlapping class with meal time. What times do meals begin and end?

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmmm, i might say it in this video about food on the ship th-cam.com/video/pUT07Ik5Dnk/w-d-xo.html, but just generally you probably don’t want 3 in a row from 11-2 or you won’t have a lunch break! and then i had a class that started at 5:10, and that sorta sucked, so if you can, i would avoid that one!

    1 question that can you please tell what is the meaning of fall and spring(I mean the months they fall in) . Actually I am an International student and don't know the dates when they come.

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      of course! so the fall voyage goes from early september to late december, and the spring voyage goes from early january to late april!

  • @saramiller6369
    @saramiller6369 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Another question is if I only have 10 minutes between classes is that enough time?

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes definitely, the ship isn’t actually so big that you couldn’t get from one place to another in that amount of time! it might be tighter if you have to use the bathroom or something, but you’ll still definitely make it!

  • @JuicyMacGirlz123
    @JuicyMacGirlz123 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    How do you use your laptop at sea for classes if there is limited WiFi ?

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So you use the sites that work on the ship (moodle, nextcloud, homeport and seamail), and this is where all homework and communication is posted, and then very few classes involve doing outside research - it’s a lot of lectures, textbook reading and reflections, written into essays and such. So you don’t have to really search for any information online, it’s all taught through the text and through experiences.

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And then of course, as I mentioned in the video, be sure to have a way to type up
      documents that isn’t google docs because I don’t think that works with the ship wifi, and you will be writing lots of papers you need to print and turn in!

  • @saramiller6369

    Hi! Your videos are super helpful as I’m going on the fall 21 voyage! One question I have is I’m not really sure what I want my major to be. Is it okay to do a few different classes of each major? Like I’m thinking of doing oceanography, media in society, and then intro to theater. Would that be okay or would it be hard/dumb to not do classes related to the same thing?

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      no you can do whatever classes you want, they definitely don’t have to go together!!! i think SAS is a fun time to try out some new subjects, so your plan sounds great :)

    how did books works? we’re you able to get them all online?

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can for most of them, it’s usually one textbook per class and then global studies they write their own text/compile documents and make you buy it/download it onto your computer.

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But when I went we read from that text they wanted us to buy maaaaybe 4 times total, or at least no one actually read it. All the info you needed to know seemed to end up on their lecture slides.

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      And I brought a lot of physical textbooks with me, but that was pretty dumb because they were heavy, and then I ended up donating them to the ship anyway because I didn’t want to take up the space to bring them home with me!

    So if class choices don’t open up until 3ish months out and you can’t have travel plans overlap with a field class, does that mean field programs don’t open up until 3 months out too? I figured they’d open up much earlier because I know they can fill up fast but then they might overlap with your field classes.

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hmm, i’m trying to remember! i’m pretty sure i got an email about field programs being available right around the time we signed up for classes! it’s a pretty quick turnaround, so once you get the email telling you that field programs are open, be sure to check right away!

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      also, the place where you can find field programs is in the semester at sea portal, which you get login info for once you’re accepted into a voyage... so if you login and don’t see anything listed on the sidebar about field programs, then they’re probably not available yet! it takes a long time to plan all of them for each new voyage, so they release them as close to the embarkation date as possible to make sure everything is set, and there won’t be cancellations :)

    hi jess! i have some questions... what time do classes start? what time do they end? what time is lunch? does everybody have the same time ? and when your in port are you allowed to sleep in the ship or do you have to go somewhere in country?

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hiii ☺️ okay so the earliest class starts at 8:00 am, but you can choose your own class schedule, so you might not have one that starts till 10:00! and then i think that the latest class ends at like 6-6:30, so it’s a pretty wide range! and lunch also has a range of times, from like 11-1:30... an hour can go whenever you want in that window!!

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      and you can always sleep on the ship in the ports you go to, and it’s actually pretty common if you’re in a country for only a few days or if the port city is really cool that a lot of people will sleep on the ship to save money!

    Do you know if there were a lot of international students? And post-grads? Cause I can't really find a lot of information on that

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There were a lot of international students on my voyage! I would say there were around 30? There were also a lot of students who were from different countries but went to schools in the U.S., so they were technically international students as well!
      And then I think I knew about 5 people who were post-grad... It's definitely less popular than going when you are still in college, but it's cool that it's still an option!

    Is there a disability accommodation services? Such as note takers?

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      i didn’t hear about note takers on the ship, but i do think they have test taking accommodations/extra time, so that’s good. but note takers would be easy to implement, so you can definitely email someone on the SAS team and bring it up - I bet they’d start it!

    How do you get your work done without WiFi, still a little confused?

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it is really confusing!! so normally, i do all of my writing of essays and stuff on google docs, right? well google docs needs wifi to function well and save things, so you can’t use it on the ship. so you need to find some other sort of program to type essays in and such. for example, you can use microsoft word, or pages by apple. these platforms let you type without wifi, so you’ll just write papers that way!

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      and these papers won’t really be research papers because you won’t have the ability to look much stuff up unless you use the computers in the library. so they’ll be more opinion based, experience based, or based on your textbooks

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      and then the rest of your assignments will just be reading textbooks and taking notes and studying and doing projects and stuff! so you won’t really need wifi to work :)

    I live these videos I’m looking into SAS. But Was traveling in port scary ever?

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There were a few times it was scary... of course days when we were travelling were stressful. I had a friend leave her phone at a hostel when we were getting on a 4 hour bus ride that left in like 10 minutes, and she took my phone so we'd have a way to contact her, and went back to try to find hers. She ended up missing the bus and having to make travel plans all alone in a country where she didn't speak the language, and that was totally worrisome and scary for all of us!

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also it is always stressful when people are approaching you on the street to sell you things and won't take no for an answer, but you can always duck inside a mall or restaurant where they won't follow you, or find an authority figure in that country.

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And my roommate got her phone stolen right out of her purse, so that sort of thing is scary too! But all avoidable if you keep track of your belongings, are aware of your surroundings, travel in groups, and remember to BE CAREFUL! Just stay aware!

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes they can, but i don’t know if they’ll have classes that will count towards mes school.... all majors/fields of study are welcome, but the science courses in the ship don’t have labs, so you probably won’t get the credits you need that way.

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      but they do have classes like the history of infectious diseases and stuff that i bet you’d find super interesting!! maybe if you go on SAS you could take some general credits and get those out of the way if your school requires them, like an english course and a history course?

    What is the acceptance rate?

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is no acceptance rate listed online... all they say is that if you’re in good academic standing and have no bad record for behavior, you’ll be considered. So I’d say if you have a 3.0 and haven’t gotten in trouble with your school and apply early enough, you should get in!

    do they have things for a political science major?

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      they offer around 70 classes each voyage so there’s usually something for everyone! and if there are political classes just know they probably will be focused on the governments/situations of the countries you’re traveling to rather than the united states! but you can look up general courses the ship usually offers, and then closer to your own voyage they’ll send out a more detailed list 👍🏻

    • @jessshorst
      @jessshorst  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      but if there’s not courses that work with your major, you can try to take general courses you need to graduate like an english class or a history

They'll send you a link closer to your embarkation day so you can scroll through all the options, and then you'll submit your choices through the Colorado State University courses website around 3 months before your voyage begins!
