Really? 73? Man my life has whipped by so quickly. I was messaging with an audio forum member somewhere in the U.S.A. He got so excited when he learned I was from Toronto; apparently part of a huge Carole Pope fan community there.
We were lucky to even do the show..... The musician's union rep came to remind me that my dues were not paid up, and that the band could not perform unless I paid him right then and there. This would have been just after the short soundcheck. Quite a day for all.
I so totally agree. I'm from Daytona Beach Florida. When I was 19 I met a guy here. He was from Toronto. I learned so much about music and life. He flew me there. He loved Rough Trade. Wow! What an experience. I fell in love with them too. I had no clue about life.
Brings back wonderful memories of seeing Rough Trade at The Chimney, The Midwich Cuckoo.....and other Toronto bars that I just can't think of right now......back in the 70's when Terry Wilkins & Bucky Berger were with them.
I was the tv audio engineer on "Concerts in the Park" series. We recorded these shows with the Comfort Sound mobile truck, on 24 track analog. I remember it being extremely hot that day, and that there was no awning over the p.a. console being used to mix the sound for the audience. It started to overheat and shut down during the sound check, so they had to replace it. Despite the short soundcheck, Carole and the band were amazing.
Rough Trade in the early 80s kicked serious A double S. Carole Pope and her brother Kevan Staples were a Canadian entity to be reckoned with back-in-the-day. This incarnation of the Rough Trade band was killer in its delivery. The same band that opened for Bowie at the CNE in '83. I'm still looking for that concert as well as a 'full-show' of this concert also on the CNE grounds.
We'd see it advertised in papers like Now Magazine or see posters downtown. We would get in touch with our friends with a telephone to ask if they're going to the concert. We'd unfold a map to get there while the other person was popping a cassette in player. That was the 80's and got by quite well.
25 years ago.... I was right up on the rail in front of the stage to the left of Carol! Great show... Saw her here, Massey Hall, Ex Bandshell and the final "Deep Six in 86" concert in Toronto... Good Times.
This is one of those rare instances where the live version is superior to the studio version. They changed it up and made it a better song. For example, the long “alllll touch” in this version.
i had to laugh when youtube asked me to relog with the pass word kanukla, Carol pope was banned in the USA when my son was just a todler, Now how facist can that be when we had her on AM FM and still vinyl, God Bless you Carol, you gave to us more then you may never know,
Carole is as enigmatic as our late Aussie, Chrissie Amphlett, (Divinyls). Raunchy but vulnerable. Love this song from back in the get go. Only wish she had another verse to lean on.
In the 80's i don't think Rough Trade had the largest fan base, but seeing what female performers have become, they just don't have any attitude. Thats why i think this Rough Trade's hits would work today just as much as it did back then.
Was that the show in High Park? It is still hazy to me now. I remember Tony Springer. What a guitarist! I saw him when he did the Jimi tribute Fire! and those jam sessions at the bar down the alley near Yonge and Roselawn, Damn those were the days! Also my fave RT track,,
I remember seeing her perform as the Carole Pope Band in the early nineties at the Misty Moon nightclub in Halifax, N.S can .What was bizarre was her band with the big hair looked like a Bon Jovi clone band and seemed they tried to make some songs like they were hard rock songs .Highly unlikely those guys remained with her for long
So pleased to be able to offer this radio-quality bootleg of Rough Trade: Thanks Q107 in Toronto for the Simulcast: th-cam.com/video/Tqn4bCW91OU/w-d-xo.htmlm40s
This was always a very cool band (more conceptual than coincidental that it had its innuendo and sexual leanings), with some great players going through its ranks. Too bad they didn't get a good crack (pardon the pun) at Europe, as hey would have found a ready-made audience to drive their ambition.
That weird shuffle she does at 2:18 made me laugh out loud. Totally 80s move - do that in the club these days and you'll get laughed out. Nice bounce action though.
Thanks! When the little 20 something SJWs say "gays, women, and blacks, etc we're never accepted, appreciated, or idolised" I say "We're you alive in the 70s and 80s? No ? Then STFU." Most of the 70s was mixed race bands and people declaring they were Bi because gay , lesbian, and straight were far too run of the mill. But if you missed the best 30 years of music and film 60s 70s and 80s. I can see how you might want to deny history and say you are the first woman, black or gay to do x. Unfortunately too many of us have visual proof . You little twinky 20 year old are not the first anything! For those who miss the fun, happiness, and laughter of the 80s. Don't let those who would divide us from envy get you down.
I can’t get over how much I love Carole Pope and how underrated she is
What makes you believe she's underrated?
@@gogoyubari366 because outside of Canada she is not well known.
@@liquidninja6654 rubbish she was big here in Australia !
Seen this beautiful Icon last night, and what an incredible performance. At 73 she’s still got it!

I love you and carol in the video for All Touch. What a great song! Is there another song that’s just as good?

I was there. A stellar show on a beauty day. Rough Trade one of my all-time favourites. Memories to cherish!
Where did it occur? Which park / venue?
Edgefest didn't begin until 1987 (as I just found out)
Molson Amphitheatre...????
Inquiring minds...
Thank you

a true Canadian international icon so ahead of her time we love you carol
I don't usually like live recordings, but this is just BOSS. I love her
Killer versions nice and upbeat ...great musicians too
Such a sick rendition of an already great song!

Cool! I remember watching this when it first aired! Good time. Carol was fierce and always brought it.

This is my ultimate Rough Trade song, but this live cut is excellent!!!!!!!
Awesome Toronto music in the 80's !
Power and energy, everything... thank you, TH-cam
F'n Brilliant performance! People just being in the moment with no cell phones!
Carole is so foxy at this concert. She still looks fab!

Wow I was at this great show 30 years ago and change, awesome.
Excellent! Thanks for sharing.
Wow I was at this concert now 55 years young that was a great time. Going to college at the time lived at Cristie Street and Dupont.

one of the best bands ever.............
Love this right-on song!
Carole Pope sat in front of me at the David Bowie concert in 1983.
Someone make a time machine so I can go back to 1985
Lee Brun 1960 to 1985 that would about do it for me... No need to be earlier, and what came later.... no need either.
Wow, the sound quality is really good! This live version is better than the studio one. So much catchier.
Agree! They released this song on 12" vinyl and that version is faster like this live version
I remember seeing RT opening for Roxy Music at Massey Hall. They didn't get the credit they deserved that night.
Carol Pope forever xo
We Always Knew That ~
totally unique!!! love carol
I just think that there is NOTHING that Carole Pope can do wrong!!! She is absolutely fucking amazing!!!!! I LOVE that beautiful lesbian!!
i would pay top dollar (and I'm broke) to see this…pure talent
She made de song live perfectly ! Awesome Carol !!! (Love when she put her hands on her boops) and after that she slap her hand. LOLL
Great song from back in the day, these guys should have been bigger,Carol and the band did a great live show.
funny...watching this I'm seein' the guitar player and said to myself ...gee that looks like Tony...sure enough :)
A little Nippy that day Carol!!😛Very Nice!!

Too bad there's no videos of RT at Grossman's in the early 70's. They were really something. Carole had a Rod Stewart cut then.

Nope. That was our dive all right.
Was it The Black Swan.. I saw RT there in the 70's.

That's always the problem with opening acts. Most people don't go to see them, so they're impatient.
Good band, unfortunately, they got steamrolled by a band called the Pretenders.
kurt cobain should have covered this tune before departing
80's Toronto.....so many great local bands, venues and performances. What a dull, boring, talentless, generic kumdump TO is now.
