    To be fair about New York, the price of living is astronomically high for how little you get. $3000 doesn't go very far in New York. And if you live in New York City everything is downsized... except the price.
    Real estate prices are a major factor in why welfare is so rampant. A $1,000,000 home in a New York city suburb would be a $320,000 home almost anywhere else in the nation. Which is why everyone rents, because to outright buy a home would cost millions. Which is why most everyone decides to move out of the state. The jobs are here and they pay above average but the cost of living outpaces the increased wages by a lot (and the gap is growing). Unless you inherit a fortune, most young New Yorkers choose to move out of state to start a family. There is no upward mobility for the middle class and working poor. The only people who can live comfortably in New York City are the uber rich.

    • @yolandasong1617
      @yolandasong1617 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Real working people have the freedom to move are moving. Instead of being priced into welfare, why won't these recipients move out and start new? A little bit more self-esteem maybe? Also, the place you should also look at for reasons of high welfare costs in liberal states like NY and CA is how taxes dollars are spent on these welfare programs. They are crazy and making tax payers mad. A recent report says CA spends $500k per homeless on sheltering and how many actually earn $500k in annual salary?

    • @jackrose2795

      I lived in NYC all my life and I love it!

    • @SeemsLogical
      @SeemsLogical 3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      @@yolandasong1617 Its not a lack of work ethic that stops New Yorkers from being able to afford the move. Most everyone in New York City works 65 hours a week or more and they still can't afford the move, so that's not the issue. Even with a high budget going into welfare it isn't nearly enough to cover the disparity of the cost of living. So that's not it either. Inflation is the number one issue. Drive that down and you'll see less people having to rely on welfare.
      I don't live in California so I can't really comment on that amount or if its actually necessary. I will say this though: California's generous welfare does attract the homeless from other states to move there. So unless you live in California you are indirectly benefitting from California's welfare by having less homeless people living in your own state, sapping your own state's resources. So there's that.

      Yes, alot of disabled people COULD do something for a certain number of hours a day/week, but would anyone actually hire someone with a disability? That is the problem we have here in Australia. The government refuse to put people with disabilities on Disability welfare because they are capable of doing a few hours work. However these people find themselves on unemployment for decades because it's almost impossible to get hired by someone for the number of hours required with a disability when there are so many able bodied people competing for jobs.
      One woman in a wheelchair with cerebral palsey was refused because she once had a part time job at a community center which closed. Not much incentive.

    At age 70 the SS office actually called me (they back paid me to age 65, with 5 years lump sum payment.).
    I was told by the SS office to take my SS and Medicare benefits.
    They said it was my money, I paid for it by working and paying into SS for 55 years.
    I believe it is not correct for you to include SS and medicare recipients in a list of people taking handouts.

    Before you start a moralistic appraisal of “welfare” recipients, which by this video’s definition includes SSI and SSDI, take a look at long-standing science. The Chronically Mentally ill which historically comprises about 5% of USA and worldwide populations, usually struggle with finding and keeping a job, and compromise (at least) 40% of our homeless or more, will often need these income programs in order to survive. In the past 50 years we have eliminated over 90% of State Hospitals. People with psychotic disorders have been told to find alternatives and communities do not have local equivalent alternatives which is adding to “welfare” and homelessness problems. The general public is quick to judge these folks because they have not studied nor worked with these people. These are human beings with neurological systems that are attacked by illnesses. When you see the problem up close and see the effects of mental illness on their lives, it can give you a very different view of “welfare”. In our society, we believe in individual rights, but also assumed is individual responsibility. The overall treatment by society toward the chronically mentally Ill could be viewed as neglectful or cruel. And when you sit in judgment of people on “welfare” you need to have a direct understanding of the reality because judging people without fully comprehending just adds to the cruelty. Do a video following a mental health case manager or mental retardation CM or Crisis Intervention Counselor and you will have a more accurate and humane opinion on the problem of “welfare”!

Same for Medicare, paid into it since it's inception, and still paying Medicare tax on my paycheck...oh, and Medicare is not free, I pay my monthly insurance premium, which has gone up to $148.50 and is taken directly from my SS check. Back in the "good old days" farmers whose crops failed and others who lost their ability to provide for themselves died. There was no Medicaid because there was no modern medicine. Women commonly died in childbirth. Children regularly died young. Men were killed and crippled in the Civil War and farm and industrial accidents, leaving behind destitute widows and orphans. The suicide, alcoholism and drug addiction rates in the late 1800's were terrible, but they were written off as tough luck and "moral failings" and downplayed by the people who want to sell you nostalgia for an innocent America that never existed.

    What an ending (including OMD-sounding song)! A big topic and you're the only one willing to address it, Nick, so kudos to you. I knew New York State was high in Medicaid funding where, as u briefly showed, it's not just for elderly medical costs. I like the way you suggested people move up to Vermont from Mississippi :) It actually is or at least was a thing for people to move up from Illinois to Wisconsin to get more bennies. Surprised to see all those northern states in the Top 10 but I guess an even bigger surprise is how California, Illinois, Pennsylvania and Michigan, states with a lot of people with a lot of problems, are back somewhere in the middle of the pack. Worth another watch - actually I just did. One thing we can thank Bill Clinton for was welfare reform. I just wish modern-day presidents pre-Trump had spent more time doing something about not letting such a large % of our manufacturing jobs drift away overseas - kind of tough making ends meet working for Walmart or retail/food service in general. Not everybody can work in high tech/medical/pharma. Keep it up, man!

    • @VisualAssault2011

      maybe so, but minimum wage jobs are generally the ones that take the fewest skills. I'm not paying $20/hr to someone who can't read a tape measure, much less blueprints, and who's only ability is picking up trash from around the jobsite. Add to that the current generation's notion that they are owed something simply because they exist; that showing up on time, doing what they're told to do when they are told to do it, and not looking at their cellphones 50x a day are infringements on their rights... the cost of a $15/hr employee, depending on the state the business is in, can be as much as $28/hr... Sorry, but I wouldn't spend $33/hr on an unskilled, snarky, entitled child. They can go get a government job.

      Matt Michaels The term for this is “toxic positivity.” It is the typical response of “pull yourself up by your bootstraps”.Not every person in bad financial circumstances is a druggie or irresponsible. Some have chronic illnesses and are being bankrupted by overpriced medications and are unable to work more due to their conditions. Others were abandoned by a spouse and are working two jobs to support their kids. But believing everything is their fault and having a pat answer relieves you of any expectation of empathy, doesn’t it? Most of the country’s population is one paycheck away from financial disaster. There is no way that is not by design. Here is an experiment for you-why don’t you go live for six months at the wage scale you look down upon and see how easy it is for you to extricate yourself from the situation.

    • @mattmichaels5195

      Covid 19 is just a new form of flu that's so mild that children age 19 and under rarely fall ill from it plus the survival rate for adults to age 75 is over 99% and those older 94.5%. More people died during the 2019-2020 Cold & Flu Season from the usual colds, flues and pneumonia than from this new virus. It appears that the Democrats want to increase the number of people dependent upon government aid to ensure they keep being re-elected. The GOP has been gaining more support from minority voters since 2008 due to their local policies that encouraged job creation that resulted in many low-income counties preferring Trump over Biden due to an increase in jobs over the past four years. The pig Democrats used Covid 19 to shut down the economy to discredit Trump and manipulate election results thru mail-in ballots. Now we'll get to see how fast the entire economy will crater as Biden prints more $$$ to keep the peasants happy.

    Disability is NOT a government program. Every worker who brings home a paycheck pays for their OWN disability insurance out of EVERY paycheck. This is so that they will have income in case they get chronically ill or injured. They pay for it THEMSELVES, so stop misleading people by falsely claiming that it is in the same category as "government benefits". 💁 Thank you. The More You Know...

    Ok. You got most people living in a city. The only jobs are fast food. It be hard to grow gardens. What do you want them to do?
    Maybe you could trash on corporations that took jobs to china and india for profit?
    Once on the system what job do get to get off. How many can work as fast food.
