Not just gay teenagers, it was every workingclass teenager, the early 80's was a time where, dressing up was the nearest we got to art and escapism from those who saw us as nothing more than factory fodder (if you could get a job). Regardless of intelligence, aspirations was educated out if us!!! They couldn't take our clothes, make-up or music from us. Thank the Lord for Charity Shops!!!
I was 9 years old when this came out. As a young kid I couldn't determine if this was a man or a woman, but it didn't matter, us kids still loved the song and the video. There was no judgement by us as children - we just accepted it. Watching this today I realise that prejudice towards non-binary people is learned behaviour.
When I wasss a Toddler I used to love it when Boy George came on TV cos I used to think he was a Circus Clown cos of all the make-up. Used to love it. Still love them both
I thought how beautiful they both looked & both had amazing voices, also loved the way people dressed in the 80's , I was a teenager but sadly wasn't allowed to go crazy with the fashion like these had the chance too. 😁
I've commented on this video before, but will again today. I was a boy of 9 years of age at the time this song came out. I am now 48. I distinctly remember at the time upon seeing Marilyn & being absolutely star struck, thinking to myself this guy is so fucking glamorous and beautiful. Fast forward to now, and I am still that boy of 9 years. Love you Marilyn xxx 😘
your sinisterly pleased, you have noticed he's a white horse riding closeted trans hateful femcel with a hair flick tick that can't string two words together and is a rather uncouth Very unatractive spanial with the slobbers now?
Marilyn never gets the credit he deserves for music! Beautiful soulful voice, heartfelt lyrics, catchy pop structures and he writes his songs all by himself!!
True! He’s a truly great person. And a spunk! And on the side, can pull off an awesome Marilyn M clone more than most. He truly lived it Boy George said and now best friends 40 years. Ground breaker! I just love him presently. Had a big Pete Burns, watch ‘everything’ bender when he died too. My first ‘tape’ I bought at 7 ( with parents with great taste) was ‘Colour By Numbers’! I turned out a pretty fabulous individual human being too!! 🤘🏼👌🏼🖤
I love this song so much and Marilyn's style. Very ahead of its time. RIP Claudia Fontaine (lead backing singer). It would've been a big deal for any black person being an ally of Marilyn's, and still would be today.
This song takes me back to the 80s and my discovery of Cafes ,cigarettes ,make up ! Duran Duran ( boys were not a thought at that time ! ) Cigarette rolling machine ,peppermint tea ! Good friends ! Always something to laugh about 😂 just being crazy or so we thought edgy I guess you would call it ! Thankyou so much it elevates my energy !❤
I am SO glad I found this song again! Love it! And Marilyn STILL looks amazing today. Hair is a bit short but hell!! And the makeup is a turn on...hey, loved Nick Rhoades so....lol
@MARILYN thank you Marilyn. Living in country hick town in Queensland Australia you opened the door for me to be me and be my eccentric self. Thank you 🤩
Decided to look her up : From a piece on her in ' The Voice ' online .... " Claudia can be seen in Soul II Soul’s 1989 ‘Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)’ music video alongside bandmate Wheeler. Throughout her life, she performed with artists such as The Jam, Annie Lennox, Elvis Costello and The Attractions, Betty Boo, Dusty Springfield, Claudia Brücken, Julia Fordham, Marilyn, Pink Floyd, Madness, Neneh Cherry, The Specials, Heaven 17, Hothouse Flowers and Howard Jones. Fontaine also sang background vocals on the hit single ‘Free Nelson Mandela’ (1984) by The Special AKA and was a recurring vocalist for Incognito. Described as a ‘singer’s singer’, Claudia was the lead vocalist on The Beatmasters’ hit single ‘Warm Love’ (1989) and ‘Deeper Into Harmony’ (1992)."
I was working in Heaven nightclub in London at this time. I remember he did a show and there were hundreds of screaming teenagers. After they were done we found a pile of unopened fan mail dumped on the floor backstage. Some of them were eyewatering. Things that teenagers wanted to do to him or have him do to them! 😂
Perfection. Image, life, taste, personality, blatant ‘normal’ person to me as in myself and lifelong community, content in himself from a young age as who he really is, at an age we were spoilt with cool stuff, we made our own decisions, understood unsaid differing/ interesting things and lived it before reined in political correctness. Great boy/ girl androgynous era. Went either way too if you think of bands like The Eurythmics. I’m 43 and this was my era. My first bought tape at 7 was Culture Club, ‘Colour By Numbers’. I turned out to be a rather awesome individual generally too! Born in Kingston, Jamaican/ English, ooh la lah!
Marilyn is amazing and he made the 80's the best times....my friend and I were both Marilyn and Boy George fans and we actually use to dress like these 2 and we are females... This brings back memories of the good times and the 80's were those for sure...
oh dear! I have spent the last quarter of a decade humming this song :-) This video to me symbolises how life should be lived: With enjoyment and a grin and tongue-in-cheek attitude.
I remember i wanted to be Marilyn i was performing this with a hairbrush in my bedroom and my friend kerry was claudia happy days i love you marilyn you are a true inspiration never forget it
Gavin's free!Would LOVE to see a reunion between Marilyn and him!Go on Gavin, you settled in the past now that its over, get you the real thing!Marilyn is still a hot dish!
I’m 52 now, but I remember this coming out. I feel he was a bit overshadowed with some of the bands at the time, and Live Aid etc. But actually it’s a great song, and still catchy today.
Boy George and Culture Club win hands down with many more hits and much larger cultural impact. This song, however, was fantastic and Marilyn was an interesting and welcome addition to the scene.

For many gay teens living in a working class town in England during the 80s this was like a ray of light.
And working class kids in the US as well
You gay?
Yes! Dare I say it but I liked Marilyn more than Boy George at the time. This song was just so uplifting.

Yes you would need to be careful putting vulnerable young people near him, they'd be riding the white horse and much more he's a total femcel creep.

It was a pity that the 80s only lasted for one decade.
