I had weight loss surgery 4 years ago and they told me the same thing; no soda, no coffee, no carbs. They also didn't factor in that I was diagnosed with celiacs disease a month before my surgery, so a lot of the foods they told me to eat, I can't have them, including a lot of the protein drinks. Ultimately I had to figure out what works for me and you're right, everyone has different needs regarding weight loss. I lost 150 total and gained back 40lbs, which for me is okay because I know I finally have improved gut health.

I had a complete open Roux-en-Y 24 years ago. I weighed in excess of 500 lbs before surgery. There have been huge ups and downs since then, but worth it. My lowest weight after surgery was 182 pounds, but I was very unhealthy because it came off very fast. I still cannot eat the same way i did preoperatively and have found that I feel my healthiest around 220 pounds. I know a lot of people think that is still overweight, and it is, it is a huge improvement for me . I have had to really listen to my body and stop where she feels the best. My goal now is to feel healthy no matter where the numbers are. That is where my freedom came. Love your channel.

I’m so excited you did this video. I got VSG 12/13/21 in hopes to one day have a baby. I have successfully lost 110 pounds and currently 15 weeks pregnant 💕💕
I literally ALWAYS used a straw and I drink carbonated drinks lol also!!! I eat carbs 🙌🏼🙌🏼 coming from a strict Keri diet, I almost fell out of my chair when my dietitian told me I’m allowed carbs!
There’s so many myths about having the surgery!
I will say the most important thing is being MENTALLY prepared!

I can so relate to what you said about weight loss surgery. I had the sleeve in 2015 and have basically gained most of it back myself. A lot of it started when the pandemic hit I had gained a little bit before the pandemic but no activity didn’t help either. I really like watching your videos of what you are eating to lose weight.

I had 80 pounds to lose. By doing low carb eating, walking 30 minutes a day for 5 days and drinking 66 oz. Of water per day, I have lost 20 pounds. I have 60 to go to reach 170 pounds. Of course I would love to reach 150 but 170 will get my BMI out of obese mode. My wake up call was when I was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. I know losing weight is a life style decision and right now I fluctuate from 228 to 232. Trying to get on the serious low carb train.

If you are having a super hard time losing weight still, I would advise you to either ask your primary to check your cortisol, prolactin, and acth. If your doctor refuses, order it yourself through walkinlab. You might be raising your cortsiol super high by drinking so much caffeine. I have cortisol issues regardless of whether I drink caffeine or not. But some people make it much harder on themselves to lose weight by chugging caffeine. There's whole forums that talk about ppl giving up caffeine of 30 days and drastically losing weight from no other changes made.

Which surgery did you have? My husband has been really frustrated with his weight loss journey - at most he lost 40 pounds with strict keto and exercise. He gained it back and didn't even go back to his old eating habits. He's dabbled in the idea, but I think he might be at this point. He has about 150 pounds to lose.

I had it in 2003 Gastric bypass. Long story short I’m 59 and still struggle with keeping it off. I can’t eat more then 1200 (I physically get dumping syndrome and reactive hypoglycemia) calories if I eat more then 800 I put weight back on. I was in weight watchers at 9 years old and those days and 10 pounds, overweight was considered fat will just leave it at that. Please everyone if you’ve had any type of bariatric surgery make sure you get the proper bariatric vitamins are you experiencing severe health issues like I am. Calcium multi and vitamins take them every day. Your life depends on it.

I had WLS… gastric sleeve in 2013 and was one of the best decisions I’ve made. Lost 180lbs and have still kept it all off. ( 306 to 135…. Achieved that in a year) Biggest thing was fixing my mentality around food and why I over ate like it did. I had therapy for a few years before surgery and that was HUGE for me and also has helped with my success. Win win.

Eating disorders are tough my 15 year old son was approaching 300lbs has 2 eating disorders binging and anorexia one dr had us do portion control and calorie counting which threw him into starving himself and bingo at night while I was asleep I stopped that diet he now see sings a therapist she's teaching him how to hold himself accountable for his choices baby steps I got him at 2 months old and already had PTSD and an eating disorder . he doesn't know why he developed this but I remember his bio dads family would only give him Karo syrup so when he came to me e was then feed only formula he wieghted 8lbs ar birth 9lbs st 2 months so I feed him whenever he wanted started gaining weight fast 9oz bottle every hour 24\7 until he was 1 was not allowed regular food until he was 1 . because of being starved he gourged on food when he got it not knowing if his next bottle would be formula or Karo water so it set both of us up with bad habits .we can't work through this trauma because he has no memories to draw off of. So his dr and therapist are taking the aproch of holding him accountable for his choices and with medicine. He has severe ADHD so he was already on meds for that so they just updated the dosage just enough to curb his appetite. I'm very anti diet and anti drugs but I'm doing what's best for him not how I feel . I'm also doing the counseling with him its not a him problem its a family problem our goal is not focused on losing weight its focused on eating healthy.weight loss is a journey not a goal.I have food issues I suffer from food insecurity so I'm an over shopper which does not help and over eater which is why I'm doing this with him. Prayers and well wishes for all

I never wanted surgery. I didn't think it was a quick solution, because it is surgery! So when people say it is a quick fix to me it is like comparing it to a c section being the easy way out... lol I never understood how people think being cut open would be easy. I went on KETO for 1 year and then switched to calories. I think the reason why you are losing slowly is because you are doing it right! You are not starving yourself. You have a small calorie deficit so that you can eat in a lifestyle that you can sustain. This is also what I am doing, and even though it is slow, it is probably the best thing for us and our bodies. I love your videos. Thank you for sharing 🙂

OMG.. I HAD to pause and comment when you posted your photo of "why" you got your surgery! Mine is the same! I was visiting Family in Chicago and took a photo with them in the Sears tower and OMG I was the largest I had ever been and it was my wake up call! I cringe every time I see the photo! I had VSG surgery back in 2019 and have managed to have a little boy and keep off 165 pounds! Struggling with the last 15 pounds but we got this!!!! I am coming up on my 4 year anniversy for my surgery, I am no where able to eat near what I used to. Some days I can eat more, but my issues was the soda! I kept over consuming my calories with DR pepper. Ive noticed the more I drink my water the harder it is for me to over eat.. But thats just my experience! I wish you the best in your journey!

I had a gastric bypass WAY back in 2003 at 308 pounds. I lost way down to 130lbs but looked sick. I was way to skinny for my body type. So, I purposely put on about 35 pounds and then kept around the 165’ish weight for the next 15-ish years…until 2020. The pandemic put me into a sedentary lifestyle. I went from being a 5 day a week road warrior to not leaving my house. Since 2020, I’ve gained 50 pounds and have been banging my head against the wall trying to get it off. Too bad that’s not burning enough calories! 😂 I’ve used your channel for encouragement and have made conscious efforts to get back on track. Stay well my friend! ❤

I am nearly 3 years out from gastric bypass. I've had great success and I agree some of the rules are unrealistic and some without proof. I have 1 coffee a day. 1 or 2 glasses of wine once a week. I do limit my carbs and sugar and stick with small portions with all meals. Drink at least 64 oz of water and take my vitamins. My restriction still works. I went from 200 lbs to 123 lbs. I maintain about 130 lbs. I'm 5 feet tall. The mental health portion can be a little bit of a struggle but I have more control of it now. I don't exercise much, but hope to change that.❤

I’m having Gastric Bypass in June, I weigh 400 pounds and both my knees are shot and need to be replaced.
I’ve been working with my team since last June. I see a dietitian, psychiatrist, and a physical therapist twice a month.
I was originally going to be having the bypass in January, however I had my first mammogram in November and I found out I had breast cancer. Had a double mastectomy on December 16th. Now that I’m recovered from that, I’m excited to be finally having the bypass. Yes, I’m now cancer free! Woohoo!
I already gave up the straw and soda. I only have to be be caffeine free for two months before surgery, then I can work it back in later.
I personally will not be going back to the straw or carbonation because I have close friends that had the same surgery. The ones that went back to the straw and carbonation, eventually gained the weight back. Was it because of the straws and carbonation? I’ll never know for sure. Is it because they now eat bigger meals and they stretched their stomach? I don’t know. Is it worth it to me to give up some things, for sure. I’m not really doing this surgery to look good. I want to be able to stand for more than 5 minutes, to walk without being in pain.
I agree that we’re all in different situations and we should do what works for us. All we can really do is what we each think is best for our situations.
Thanks for sharing your journey Jenn. I appreciate your honesty. ❤❤❤

I had VSG in January of this year and my experience with what the doctor and nutritionist was totally different. There was not one thing that they said I just couldn’t do for the rest of my life. I drank coffee in the hospital and continue to have it daily. As far as drinking alcohol, they advised me to not drink for a year because of the transfer addiction thing. I’ve already broken that rule… oops. I think the problem with diet culture in general is the all or nothing mentality. No carbs ever, no sugar ever, no alcohol, etc. is why so many of us fail when it comes to weight loss. I think your approach of things in moderation and slower weight loss is spot on and I can definitely see where that would help improve your overall relationship with food. Keep doing what your doing and making great content on your channel. I’m so glad you finally addressed your wls and shared your experience. I’ve been watching your channel for about 2 1/2 years and when I was trying to make my decision, I really wanted your opinion lol Thanks again for sharing. I’m a loyal watcher! Go Jen!!

I had VSG in 2020 lost 65 pounds, hit the gym 5/6 days a week, eat a 80/20 diet, had skin removal/ Lipo in 2022 and I’m literally up 20lbs from my lowest of 169 😩 I had to literally delete all the women who lists 100+ and have these banging bodies now because it’s a mind f*** and I know summer was busy. We were on our motorcycles a lot so we were eating out more but hell!! It’s annoying to put our bodies through all that to go right back to where we started. I am also 43 and the hormones have now also kicked in. Like you I don’t regret my surgery one bit, but I wish I healed my eating disorder first and took more advantage of that in the beginning. Thankyou for this video ❤😮. I'm in the pre- process of getting gastric sleeve surgery. You have explained what I personally feel I need to deal with before surgery. My teem is very understanding . I just had the psych appointment and now it's pretty much up to me. But I'm realizing my likes and dislikes and what I need to do before I feel comfortable with surgery. So thankyou. Again because you made me realize I am right I need to get these things in line first, before going under the knife. Appreciate and love your video.❤

Kudos to your for your bravery and honesty sharing your surgery and personal weight loss journey. Its one of the things that I love about you the most, your vulnerability. And of course, congrats on losing 18 pounds, that is NO easy task. I had RNY surgery and am certainly no professional or guru at this weight loss thing. But, having watched several of your "what I eat" videos, I think you make pretty healthy choices most of the time, albeit veg/fruit light and simple carb heavy and you intake WAY too much caffeine every day LOL. However, I feel like perhaps the reason you are losing so slowly may be that you graze and are eating something all day long. At 7 years post surgery, you dont need to eat two breakfasts (a bar and a breakfast), a snack OR TWO between every meal, and a bedtime snack. 3 meals per day with a possible snack between lunch and dinner and a little something (a few bites) to take your nighttime pills is the goal of most programs, and only if you feel hungry. If you were only able to ingest a total of 4 oz of food total for each meal, because of your surgery, that would be different. But, you are clearly able to eat a minimum of 8 - 10 oz of food per meal not including your side carbs which usually appear to be more than a few bites. I wonder if you tried to do the no drinking for 30 minutes post eating would assist you in feeling full for longer? I was told the straw thing was a myth, that bubbles in drinks may hurt my tummy or they may not but that soda is the devil lol, and complex carbs, occasional treats are fine in moderation and to avoid sugar, bread, pasta and rice as much as possible forever. My programs "bariatric moderation" is amuch less than what your "in moderation" is. After writing a book here, I would urge you to reach out to your original bariatric team and make an appointment with your bariatric Dr and your nutritionist. They will help you! They will renew your memories of what you should be eating, in what proportions and combos and get your tool working for you again! I wish you continued success in which weight loss avenue you choose to take and I love your channel !

I had VSG in 2017. I lost 80 pounds getting down to 131 pounds. I have since gained about 30 pounds back and am trying to lose 20ish pounds. I do feel like I can eat a bigger portion now but I still have a lot of restriction. I don’t really get hungry so that is helping me tackle my regain. The way I overeat my calories is by grazing. I have yet to have a food disagree with me so I really need to watch what I eat.

I’ve had a couple of friends who have too. Of the 3 only one has been what i feel is a success. She worked on a lot of emotional/mental issues and has changed to a much more healthier diet. I’m so proud of you, you have an intelligent attitude towards eating and health. Also loved your meal and snack ideas. Keep it coming friend ❤

Hi I'm afraid to do WLS. I've heard a lot of bad things about it. I've been trying to lose weight all my life I am about 60-70lbs overweight and I want to lose weight badly, so I just don't know. I did WW and lost the same 5lbs, that I lost over 6 months time. I just got done with Nutrisystem and I lost weight but now I have gained it back and I was doing what I was suppose to still not happening, I don't know what to do now.

Weight loss is not easy, and the emotional side of eating/food is very real. Have you ever tried intermittent fasting? When I started fasting last year it really forced me to deal with my emotions in a better way. I started journaling to help me through. I started with no eating after 7pm and then pushed my breakfast to 10am. It doesn't have to be drastic to work. You do have to be careful if you have had any disordered eating patterns in the past, but IF is the only thing that has worked for me. Dr Jason Fung has a book called "Life in the Fasting Lane." And Gin Stephens' book "Fast. Feast. Repeat" is another great starting place.

I think just be careful with what information you’re putting out there because you do need carbs. Your body will not operate correctly without them and you won’t have natural energy. Please y’all DO NOT cut out carbs completely! Carbs are your friend if you have a healthy relationship and knowledge with food! ❤️🫶🏼

Thank you for sharing your story with us. I am trying to loose the weight I gained after being on a program called Optavia. It was effective but expensive and it didn’t help my hormones much. I have been on a journey to understanding that there is no “good” or “bad” foods. I am learning that, yes I can eat carbs if I want to. But I am also learning what helps my stomach and what doesn’t. It’s definitely a learning process and we can’t beat ourselves up for having an “off day”. We’re human and need to show ourselves and others some much needed grace to be ourselves.

Such a great video, Jen. Thanks for sharing. I have 100lbs to lose, and I seriously considered surgery (had a consult but canceled it) and questioned if trying to do it on my own was even possible. In the beginning of 2023 I decided to give it “one last try” by focusing on 10ksteps, drinking my water (and I use the “evil” water packets! 😂) and eating in a cal deficit. I’m down 37lbs, but more importantly, HEALING my relationship with food and doing something that I know I can do for the rest of my life. For the first time, I’m not beating myself up and it’s working! I firmly believe that so much of weight loss is a mental thing- because it’s about being consistent without the instant gratification and trusting the process. Thank you for being so open and honest in your video. ❤

I also had bariatric surgery in 2016 and it's so surprising what different places will tell you. As far as straws I was told to wait a year till my stomach was healed from the stitches etc they also told us that during the first year if we drank from straw the excess air would cause quite a bit of discomfort. As for the carbonation I was also told never again and tried it once and was in so much pain I haven't tried again. The alcohol they ask that we wait at least a year and to be very mindful of cross addiction. Another rule was don't eat 30 minutes before or after a meal. My program was the opposite with carbs I was incredibly strict and they actually had me come in and monitor that I was starting to eat from all food groups in a healthy and moderate way with concentrating on protein first at my meals, then veggies but carbs had their place. I so far have managed to keep over 100 lbs off but I did regain about 20 lbs. My surgeon said that this was normal and my body would stabilize where it needed to be. I did subscribe and still love a lot of recipes from a bariatric meal plan for the first 24 months. The meal plan helped me in keeping me interested with new recipes and healthy food. And it replaced some old meals I liked but healthier.

I have recreated it again a few months ago using Quest Chips in the center just to lessen the carbs a bit. Worked well So tasty. My husband loves Taco Bell and always gets the same exact thing - the beef supreme tacos. I always try a new item on the menu.

I had gastric sleeve too and I have gained back some. But I would do it again. I was told the straw thing because it fills ur stomach with air so there isn’t room for food and can cause gas pain. They was you to focus on protein! That being said my surgery was 3 years ago. I wish I would have been stricter and wish I would have worked on my mental health. I think I would be doing better at this point.

I had VSG 9 years ago. I would agree with most of what you said, with my experiences being similar. My dietician explained that it would be easy to get too many calories by choosing foods that were calorie dense and/or liquid calories. Also that it was important to prioritize nutrient dense foods, get a good balance of different foods and keep track of the foods and drinks everyday. I lost 180 lbs in the 15 months after surgery. I regained 40 lbs over the next 2 years, and in the past 5 years I've regained 80 lbs. Advice I would have for someone having WLS today would be to make it a priority to change how you think of food. I found that the success I saw in the first year after VSG made it too easy to forget to plan and track what I ate everyday, which makes a huge difference and is a big part of my plan to lose the regain. VSG is a health tool that helps a lot, but can't fix everything by itself. I'm proud of how well you've done and how you are sharing your experience!
