  • Siri and Google Home Integration - Using Siri Shortcuts to Drive Google Assistant Actions
    Those of you with an iPhone and an iPad know that Apple's Siri is the voice assistant that you've been forced to use for a long time. Well, now with Siri Shortcuts on iOS, you can pull up the Google Assistant application and therefore use your home automation with Google Home, Google Home Mini, Google Home Hub, and of course the Google Assistant.
    In this tutorial video, I show you the easiest way to get Siri and Google Home working together. I show you how to create shortcuts quickly and efficiently, and then how to ensure that you have easy ways to use those new shortcuts. With these shortcuts, you can drive all kinds of home and life automation, including running routines, playing music, videos, and much more.
    After you link Siri to Google Assistant through Shortcuts and the Google Assistant application, you simply need to execute commands on your Google Assistant application. Once you've executed those commands (with the right settings on your iOS device), they show up as Siri Suggestions in the Shortcuts application. From there, it's just a matter of placing them into the different shortcuts you'd like.
    All in all #Siri shortcuts and #GoogleHome or #GoogleAssistant integration is going to be very useful and it'll allow all of us to really drive a lot of great integration with our iPhones.
    If you need any recommendations for home automation products, here's my Amazon Influencer Shop. Yes, I make money if you buy a product from Amazon through this link, but I've only included products I personally recommend. It's a curated list of high-quality smart home products.

    Correct me if I am wrong, for "Hey Siri" when iphone is locked, it is still needed to unlock the phone before able to run the commands in Shortcuts app and/or Google Assistant?

    This was extremely informative. I don't own an iPhone so I didn't even know what the Google home app looked like on an iPhone, let alone having it run shortcuts though Siri and the Google Assistant. I’m a bit lost.....not sure why you would press your Siri button so therefore asking Siri to ask Google Assistant to do something when you could just press the Google Assistant icon on your iPhone instead.......perhaps would be good if you had a widget on your iPhone/iPad as Android doesn’t have widgets yet....but you didn’t show us this bit....

    Hi, thanks for the video. Are you able to trigger a google home routine from siri? It seems like you are only able to send a specific command, OR trigger a google assistant routine. Thanks

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I belieeeeeeeeeve you can. Google Assistant is really just the interface to Google Home in a lot of ways so I think you can trigger them? At least, last time I tried that was possible.

      @@AutomateYourLife Thanks a lot for your reply. Im struggling to trigger the 'Bedtime routine'
      When I try on google assistant - 'Ok Google, Bedtime' - The routine triggers on my iPhone's Google assistant app instead of it triggering on the google home app.
      When I try on google assistant - 'Ok Google, Start bedtime routine on google home' - it provides me a help link to setting up routines online instead, and does not trigger any routine on either app.

    I have HomeKit with Siri controlling everything in my Smart Home already but I’d like to purchase a Google assistant instead of another HomePod for my bedroom. If a wall switch is already set up to work with Siri and HomeKit, can I also control that switch through a Google assistant speaker? I want a Nest Hub for my bedroom. The switches say that they are compatible with all 3 assistants but they don’t specify if they are all compatible with all of them together at the same time. Will it work? Thanks

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep! You can use any voice assistant at any time to control any device it's compatible with. You just have to make the connections in the right apps.

  • @GetMeCoding
    @GetMeCoding 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Nicely done. App interfaces obviously change but this gives a great overview of how you can get these platforms talking to each other. You do note it in the comments but for the Google users, HOME and ASSISTANT are definitely needed. Google seems to have users focus only on needing the HOME app. Now on to using Pythonista on the iOS!

    Figured out a fix for Siri Shortcuts that just stopped working yesterday. I finally figured out how to fix it. Here is what I did to get it working again.
    Leave the shortcut alone in shortcuts app. Then go to "Siri and Search" in settings. Then "My Shortcuts" Delete the specific shortcut phrases that aren't working in app. Now exit that and go back into Shortcuts app and re record the Siri Phrase for the non working shortcut and it should now work. This issue was only happening to me with third party apps. Google Assistant, Nest as examples. Hopefully this helps people experiencing the same issues I did.

    Have you had Siri Shortcuts with Google Assistant just stop working? Siri works great with everything but the shortcuts I setup with Google. They worked fine this morning but stopped working this afternoon. The other non Google assistant shortcuts work fine. The Google Assistant shortcuts I made work fine when I push the shortcut in the app. But not using Siri. Any suggestions?

    How do I create an automation where I’ll turn on a Homekit accessory, and a google home accessory will be automatically turned on as well? I can’t seem to figure this out from the shortcuts app.
    Also, I noticed if I created the shortcut from an iPhone, I won’t be able to execute the shortcut if I say the same phrase to Homepod or another iPhone / iPad. Thanks for such useful video!

  • @keithcroshaw
    @keithcroshaw 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Stinks it can't run properly when the device is locked.There needs to be things you can allow to run with the device locked. But that's not something Apple... well I never expected shortcuts even though I owned Workflow... So we'll see if they realize that's the last hold-out.

  • @MichaelHollandOne
    @MichaelHollandOne 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Another great video. Question, why do all that if you have the Google home app on your iPhone. Can't you just hit the mic on Google home app and do that directly? I'm probably not understanding but at first look, it looks like the iPhone "shortcut" is processing through the Google app but just let's you press the Siri button instead of Google. I guess the integration really comes when things are controlled with Homepod and Google hub and you want them to process together. I'm looking forward to future videos on this because I'm going Google in my house but my wife and kids have iPhone and iPads (have Google Mini and JBL Google Assistant speaker, hope to get Google Assistant smart display and the three boys Google minis for their rooms Christmas). Thanks again.

    • @AutomateYourLife
      @AutomateYourLife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Michael - yes that’s it. The true automation comes as you bring together more functions and more systems with this kind of integration. What I showed here is simple, but it’s easy to make a shortcut now that uses HomeKit and GA, Home Hub, and anything that connects to either of those systems.
