i just really realized, youre a very cool guy feng zhu. you have a school to teach people to aspire to their dreams, and even still for free you go out of your way to make these videos for people. very cool, and i think i speak for us all when i say we really appreciate it.
Well said about putting in your effort in projects as well as emphasizing the importance of pleasing your clients. You truly are a master of your craft. I hold you with the highest respect.
I just want to say thank you for all of your insightful knowledge and tips. I am an printmakng artist from Port Arthur, TX and I have recently come to terms that my heart lies in videogame design. Specifically concept design. This answers many questions I have and also gets me along the right path. Again thank you and I hope to see more of your work.
Thanks a LOT for the tips and personal experiences. It's incredible how much one can learn in 20 minutes in a totally effortless manner. All my thumbs up.
I cant believe this guy is for real. He must be the best teacher out there- he is explaining everything he is doing and he is talking freking fast sometimes. 25 mins of non stop talking and that's epizode48 o.O he rocks
I like your style of teaching and I could not agree with you more. I'm a traditional artist and love digital drawing in Photoshop and love sketching. I agree with your "energy" train of thought. Thank you for the video!
I've subscribed just yesterday, and I had feeling, that new tutorial would be out soon. Anyway, I wan't to admire and thank what you're doing. You're one of my favourite professional artist, and your gnomon tutorials was a great help once. Now I've discovered your channel and blog, and it all inspires me and makes me to go on further on the path to improvement. Thanks Feng Zhu!
This tutorial has been really helpful. I always hated how flat and uninspired my drawings looked by the time I got to final line art. My initial sketches always had more character than the final product. I'm experimenting with this technique right now and my drawings already feel more lively and more complete. Thanks!
thank in name of those who have no money to attend expensive schools but we want to learn !!! THANKS Feng Awesome method and technique as usual! Keep uploading pleeeaseeee!!
@lapticul Painting digitally is really like taking up any new kind of media. I've been drawing and painting in photoshop for about 7 years now and it's very much like starting out doing oils(ECT) for the first time. You don't need to know every technique to paint something. Photoshop is about learning some basics about layers and brushes, opacity and so on. There are hundreds of tutorials on basic stuff. If you want to paint more traditional-like, without layers it's even easier to figure out.

Hey Feng, you mention possibly doing another DCinema with regard to slightly tighter more functional production art. I think that'd be a really cool new video idea since we still haven't seen that. Would you still consider following this up?
The FZD Design Cinema Contest deadline is approaching soon. Be sure to submit your entry by September 30, 2013 to win a trip to Singapore. Good luck to you all~~
Feng do you have any videos on how to use certain brushes for different things like drawing or painting and what brush settings do you have on this video ?
Your awesome! love your videos! was wondering if you could make a video on rendering the textures in line drawings like this, such as the skin? once again, love all your vids!
Hey Feng, I'm getting a Intuos 3 Medium sized tablet in about a week, just wondering what brush presets you are using. I know you mentioned it in another video, but just said that everyone has their own preferences. If you could just briefly spend 20 seconds of your time on the next video to preview us your brush settings, that would be great! I'm a huge fan, and might attend your school after high school!
the best way for me to sit down and come up with ideas is to not do anything but sit in a quiet and peaceful place like the woods, on a boat,or on the patio at midnight (that one is a bit more dangerous though) basically cutting myself off from anything that might make me want to do something to similar to what im watching or listening to.
great stuff really usefull to hear what you said about freelance and nice to hear what you said about working out from the face. Stuff that you kind of instinctively know but great to hear someone say it.
digital its actually easier than traditional painting if you are good at traditional you will have a lot of advantage in digital says Jason Seiler, my favourite caricature artist, and I think so too you only have to learn the basics like how to set the brush layers if you want and you are good to go.
thankyou so much for posting these videos ... this one had such an amazing about of really excellent advice .... often times the people making these can come across as talking down to those watching, you didn't at all ... just lots and lots of brillant advice thankyou thankyou and thankyou very much :D
Huge fan of fzd. I work with tradition, pencil and pen, and i'm very, very interested in digital, but i'm no where close to affording photoshop. Could you please recommend a program for digital drawing that isn't quite as expensive, but still has great function?
yo feng! I really recognized what you said around the 8:00 'till 13:00 min. mark from how i started out as well, and I immidiately thought of a friend who has this same problem. Will get my flight ticket to singapore soon! Im in the february batch :) hope to see you then ;) Cheers man, keep these vids up. They really help and I appreciate them alot!
@Ziggurat2009 No, I don't think its the hardware or the force proportion problem ( i have it checked off btw). Its not disconnection between where you are drawing and where you are seeing it. I think I just need to be able to see when my hand going to achieve that accuracy. Painting for me its fine on a tablet. Its just fine sketching like Feng its really hard for me. I think its just practice at the end of the day.
What do you think is the best brush for sketching? I tend to sketch with a small all-hard oval one which is tilted a tiny bit. But I usually draw human figures, which have more curvature to them. My sketches aren't quite as bold as his. I have a commission with loads of creature sketching coming up. This guides me a ton.
@NenadCGArtist just my 2cent. my opinion is not a question of advantage and disadvantage, but a question of when you would use 3d software for concepting. For me, I would use 3d software to concept, when I do man-made objects, like a building or interior design, because those things needs strong perspective accuracy to look good, and 3d software removes that hurdle for you.
@NenadCGArtist 2 examples, A) say u are sitting in a meeting with a director brainstorming a film project. You were asked to sketch out some ideas and all you have is pen and paper. Are you going to say u can only concept in front of my computer? B) Art director comes to you and say you have only one day to design 10 interior sets of a game, are you going to spend all day trying to freehand accurate perspective on paper, or set yourself up quickly on a computer and focus your time on design?

Feng Zhu - great design cinema - the workflow you describe is really cool. I have a question - Did you design the large drop ship in transformers 3 ? Cheers
Hi Master Feng, i'm an aspirant designer from Italy with some degrees and a little experience. Recently i've watched almost all the design cinema you made and they're really great you know, but something got my attention and i'd like to ask you a big question wich seems unanswered 'till now. How do you deal with low detail kinda stuff? Recently i had to do something like a modern redesign of 1920 dressing in Sardinia (military suits too) and the lack of details is a pain to deal with. Thank you!
Hi Feng, do you draw these sketch on an Intuos or a Cintiq? I find it really hard to achieve freehand line quality on an Intuos versus drawing on a sketch draw, that I can draw a lot more accurately, like straight line and eclipses.
@franklin20uk Hey there Frank. I know what you mean about having issues with line accuracy and coordination when drawing digitally. Two things, make sure your tablet software is calibrated to the screen and you have "force proportions" checked off. If possible, invest in some high end hardware, I personally feel that did the trick for me, I don't feel any delay or disconnect when drawing lines anymore, its far more natural. Feng uses Intuos 3 and 4 but he'd tell you it makes no difference.
Hey Feng Zhu, I was wondering if you're using the background color (in this case white) to clean up your initial sketches, or the use of the eraser? Cause when I use white or the background color that is present, the pieces always tend to end up messy. Thanks!
You seem to use a lot of references and textures. How do you go about obtaining these? Like i know some of it is photos you take is there another source, cus you seem to reel them off so easily lol
Great video but he doesn’t really talk about creature design so much as how hard and fast you need to work in the Industry. Not trying to bash, he’s one of the best in the business.
@HotPocketsBoy Please refer to the Program Fees section under the Admission tab on our website for breakdown of the course fee for 1 year full-time Diploma program. Feel free to email us should you have additional queries :)
Quick question. What college degree would you suggest for concept art? I'm looking at the art institute right now but none of their courses don't look quite right.
@TheDonKKs International students are welcome to apply for the Certificate Courses. Feel free to email us at our School's contact and we will be glad to assist you with your queries.
@NenadCGArtist What makes you say that? This is production, not who makes the prettiest art with the most amount of effort. Client pays a concept artist for his ideas and unique thinking process, drawing is just a presentation. If you follow Feng video from the early on, you will notice he mention numerous times, Client at the end of the day, do not care about your approach. If you think 3d program is cheating, so is using photographs.
i just really realized, youre a very cool guy feng zhu.

Wow this burnout theory and time management is the best art advice I've ever heard!

So generous of you to spend the time, your off time, to do and share this for us.
Amazing words of wisdom. I will play this multiple times in the background while I sketch this week
One of the best videos you've done so far - can't get enough of creature/ character art!
Thanks for sharing your time.
Absolutely, those messy 1 gen drawings are the best, they leave room for the imagination.
I cant believe this guy is for real. He must be the best teacher out there- he is explaining everything he is doing and he is talking freking fast sometimes. 25 mins of non stop talking and that's epizode48 o.O he rocks

I love drawing rough and cleaning up while it goes

You are the best digital artist I know!
Drawing using digital media looks awesome...this is certainly what I want to do more of in the future. Good job!
I click "like" and add to favorites before the tutorial even starts. Always good stuff here.

Hi feng, first of all... awsome work as always!!

Absolutely Mind blowing, I need to work my ass off if I want a career in entertainment design.
yes arackan, i think there is a vid where he talks about industrial designer versus illustration design. is this what u want?
the best way for me to sit down and come up with ideas is to not do anything but sit in a quiet and peaceful place like the woods, on a boat,or on the patio at midnight (that one is a bit more dangerous though) basically cutting myself off from anything that might make me want to do something to similar to what im watching or listening to.

@DorianAvilaOrozco thanks for your comment. i'll be buying one as soon as possible. what do you recomend?
Hi i really enjoy your videos, can you tell me what resolution u use most often for character drawings?
As all others great video full of precious informations. Thank you!
What do you think is the best brush for sketching? I tend to sketch with a small all-hard oval one which is tilted a tiny bit. But I usually draw human figures, which have more curvature to them. Feng!!! could u do a video on how too step up brushes for drawing and painting thanksss love ur videossss
Hi @respectfalseicons, Please refer to FZD Design Cinema Episode 34 for the hardware and software. We use Photoshop and Wacom. Thanks! :)
Is there an episode where you talk about the job as a concept artist or something similar?
Thank you for the quick response!
I have just discovered this, awesome! What are you using, a mouse or what.
@NenadCGArtist 2 examples, A) say u are sitting in a meeting with a director brainstorming a film project. You were asked to sketch out some ideas and all you have is pen and paper. What kind of brush is he using? Looks more like an actual pencil than anything I ever saw.
Thanks for another great video.
I'm loving this!
Can't wait for next episode
I find you can traditionally draw like this if you use ball point pen and tube of white out.
Feng Zhu - great design cinema - the workflow you describe is really cool. I have a question - Did you design the large drop ship in transformers 3 ?
Cheers
Have you thought about setting up a school in LA, California?
is that the usual standard pixel for painting in production? Is it usually 10000 pixels?
Love your work and your channel.
BTW what brush setting do you work on?
Cheers
Hi Master Feng, i'm an aspirant designer from Italy with some degrees and a little experience. Is it best to join an art school knowing how to draw bloody good or at least knowing how to draw?
Nice feng! Im hoping to see you every week from now ;D
7:00-7:30 cant wait for those videos
Hi Feng, do you draw these sketch on an Intuos or a Cintiq? I find it really hard to achieve freehand line quality on an Intuos versus drawing on a sketch draw, that I can draw a lot more accurately, like straight line and eclipses.
They have one, it is called FOUNDATION 01 FZD Art Book
did u make that brush or is it original from Photoshop? I'm messing around w/ the brushes to find a favorite...just wondering
i learned so much in the first 2 minutes great tip!
@franklin20uk Hey there Frank. I know what you mean about having issues with line accuracy and coordination when drawing digitally. Is it useful to do grayscale for characters or moslty for environment concepts?
Thanks in advance.
What brush are you using? I can't find a good one for sketching

Thanks!
is all this done with a mouse or a digital pen ?
Stunning !!
it would be nice if u guys have a school here in the philippines :/
would that new macbook pro retina be ideal for digital inking? if photoshop supports full 2880x1900 res in fullscreen mode?
hi, you don't update your new video on YOUKU anymore? it's diffucult for us to visit TH-cam...

I know what you are talking about, my normally are to. But he has had over 20 years of experience. Design school helps to.
Any idea what brush he used for the first pass of sketches and then the clean up?
feng can you tell me what brushes and size you use on photoshop
Hello, i have a quick question. What resolution do you set you sheets? 'Cause mine always seem too low or something..
um question: what resolution would be good for a 10,000px x 10,000 px drawing?
