    Hi Kaity, once again insightful for all keepers. You're developing a very mature tank in very little time. Aquascape's looking great. I've kept Tanganyikan for 20+ years. I recommend perhaps trying perhaps to your taste,... White Calvus, a Tropheus sold as a Rainbow another gorgeous black and Furcifer is another gorgeous multiple variety you'll never regret. In my 6x2x2, also included Rainbows and Plecos. Cheers again for another great video.

I have some julidochromis living in my Mbuna tank with not many issues, and I'll definitely try a 100% Tanganyika tank in the future cause It's really tentative. Altolamprologus calvus and A.compressiceps could crossbreed.Cyprichromis leptosoma "Utinta" could crossbreed with Cyprichromis leptosoma "Mpulungu" ... but if you are not going to keep small fry hybrids then it is ok.We don't do that in Tanganyika usually.
    greetings from Europe(Croatia)
    All the best :)

    • @Kaityscichlids
      @Kaityscichlids  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm not too worried about hybridisation because their fry don't seem to survive, but I would definitely address it if it was happening. And would never sell to stores either if I wasn't 100% sure of the parents 😊

    Nice work Kaity… I’ve kept freshwater tropical fish for over 30 years and only 4 weeks ago set up a Lake Tanganyika tank, I’m of a very small group of people in the east of England that keep these fish as getting hold or seeing them in local aquatic stores is rare and ordering them is the norm, the colour and behaviour of these fish is amazing really and for some strange reason they are poorly represented. Lake Malawi has always had a strong following but for reasons unknown Lake Tanganyika hasn’t really had a popularity spike, hopefully this changes and people start seeing what’s been missed…

    • @Kaityscichlids
      @Kaityscichlids  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's awesome to hear you set up a tank! And I totally agree 😱 They are definitely underrated and underrepresented compared to the Lake Malawi cichlids. And they have been just as easy to keep so far!

    As a human being requires to survive and thrive, we need Good nutrition,Good living environment, Good air. So for fishes similarly, make sure your fishes have 1 Good Food.2 Good water 3 Good oxygen. Three ingredients to raise quality fish, simple.I will for now give you my idea of creating Good Oxygen.
    Especially for Chichlids, Purchase a big Air Pump and large Air Diffuser,that will have strong air coming in, that will cause the waters to churn and blow strongly in one direction This creates some turbulence that the cichlids love to play in,excercise in. My best wishes to you and congratulations on your very nice video

    It would be worth it to throw in some Neothauma tanganyicense snail shells, which are about 2 inches (5 cm) in diameter about 6 per fish just to see if they will host one to breed and even live in I’d definitely love to see you give that a shot also are they the ones that have been eating the fry?! Cuz there known to eat other fishes fry in the wild… anyways just another idea I’d throw out there thanks for sharing your tanks and videos with us love watching them evolve and grow!!! ❤❤❤❤

    AHHH! My ears are bleeding! Some much Latin! No, I kid. I'm a nerd. I like hearing the scientific names of things. Plus these days it actually seems to help sometimes. It seems that a lot of fish have so many different common names anymore that people call them, if you're looking for them or trying to figure out what anything is everyone calls them something different and it's confusing. So sometimes it seems it's easier to go by the scientific names.
    Thanks for the video. You have a nice variety of different types of videos. More in depth ones like this one, and more general ones.
    On a side note that cichlids have no control over, TH-cam is stupid. I didn't get a notification for this video until 8 hours after you released it. And that seems to always be the case. I'm not sure my ego can handle watching it and commenting on it so much later than other people. 😁

    • @Kaityscichlids
      @Kaityscichlids  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Ohhhh no!! TH-cam has to step up their game 🤣 Funnily enough it was so much easier saying the Latin names for these ones because everyone seems to use them for Tanganyikan cichlids. Unlike the Malawi cichlids where everything is known by its nickname normally 🤣

    *kaityscichlids* i have a quite couple of questions and you mentioned them as well: please i like to hear from your future reference in the aquarium hobby.
    it seems you've built amazing volume of cichilds from the vast fast/slow and steady streams and rivers
    you also pointed out that a few(selective few you have will or have paired for life)
    you also mentioned most of them have bred once or twice and/or havent gotten the chance to breed cause they arent big enough
    not to forget you two different kinds(species whatever terms you like to use) that are more predatory eating fry or others fry cichilds..
    so what i am and others might be wondering: will you eventually the 14 species you have separate tanks so not only they will reastablish themselves but will no longer have to constantly defend themselves or fight for a shared space?

    • @Kaityscichlids
      @Kaityscichlids  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is a great question! They are social fish so establishing their territories and interacting with each other is part of their enrichment. However it's not ideal for fry survival. With where things are at right now, I wouldn't want to set up separate tanks for the pairs, but that would be the ideal thing to do if I wanted good success breeding them. For now I'll keep them together and remove the fry and see how they go

  • @jakemartin2009
    @jakemartin2009 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I kept waiting for her to address the dietary restrictions of the Tropheus, but she never did. I'm curious how she keeps them from getting bloat while also ensuring that the other cichlids get enough protein. Maybe her tank works because of all the fry available to gobble up?

    • @Kaityscichlids
      @Kaityscichlids  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sorry for not addressing this! I feed them New Life Spectrum Thera A which is a high quality low protein pellet, mixed with Aquamunch Spirulina flakes and they've all done well on that. I even find they can tolerate Brine Shrimp every now and then. I just stay away from foods like blood worms due to the exoskeletons, and low quality foods with a lot of fillers

    If your Tropheus behave like your Bemba you might changetheir food. Esp when all behave like him (could be that this spec fish has issues). Tropheus could have very strong issues with protein cause their intestine is very long cause in Nature thei are plant eaters. I had to made this experiance the hard way ( a Groupe of 15 RIP). I changed food to frosen Artenia or antarctic Shrims. Esp your leleupi will love then too and get nice colours. To help theTropheus try frosen spinach pure. Here in Germany you find some i little portions, easy to handel, just snip it in. And yes the combination is great i mysekf had it for over 20 years, You wouldnr bread them so your tetracefalus will be no Problem. You may seperate them if you wand little Tropheus or if they are breadind. Hope you may have so much fun as i had. Tanganica Cichlids are the most interessting Fish by behavier in my oppinion. After seening the Attenuates that i never hold (cause at that time they were not avaliable for a reason) be awere the are extreme predators and will not only reduce the youngs. And for that they need high protein witch is the opposite of the tropheus. i would seperate them together with the compressicaps who also like fresh fish-

      @@Kaityscichlids He clump the fins and shake while standing on a point. you can see it when you introduce him and every time i saw him in vid. Your intention isn`t breading so a compromise in feeding might be not so importend. i ll do it too in first time. But after some times i change to frosen food. Seperate my Bembas in too Groups and seperate them in two 600 ltr tanks. Than seperate the young males and change them to avoid inzess. Worked very well. Great memories cause i also hold Bembas. Combined with Eretmodus cyanosticus, tanganica clowns, with round and smooth stones, cause of algies. For all the others i use "Lochgestein" (perforated stone?) all lambrologus (neolambrologus) and julidochromis love them, Tropheus might get stuck and die (yes speaking of experiance). I would remove the lava stones. too sharp for algieeaters too small for whole loves bad circulation only catchin waste. But that s your tank. I also started with industrial food, easy to handel but switch to frosen after a while. The fish thanks it with beeing healsy and in good shape breading every 3 moth. But at that time i had a room and 40 more Tanks so i could seperate the species or combined them, seperate in need of food. But if you choose frosen shrimps or artemia (don t know if it s avaliable down under) all of them will be fine. And breaking the ice is the difficule part just throw it in it will melt while drifting around and the food will reach the weaker fish too. Importend when the fish get greater and more torial.

    • @majorbruster5916
      @majorbruster5916 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Shimmying in Tropheus can be indicative of a parasitic disease, usually gill flukes. That fish had white patches around it's mouth, which IME means that the fish is sub-par and will probably continue to be. Sometimes, this can be down to a water quality issue, but I gather you keep your water quality very high. Obviously, the fish came in with its problem. In a heavily stocked tank, where the fishes might feel stressed, flukes and other ectoparasites can spread quickly.
      With regards to diet, Tropheus are algivores in nature and spend a lot of time scraping algae, primarily the sort of aufwuchs that grows that grows in the lake. Along with this, they will also take in small crustaceans that live in the strands. So a diet rich in protein is not suitable for them and will cause them to have digestive problems.

Ah nice, I'll have to keep that in mind for pH and minerals as Lake Tanganyika cichlids are what I'd be most interested in keeping. Wow, 400 gallons!! No matter what you go with they're going to do great in a tank that size. I think it's definitely a personal choice depending on what you are drawn towards. For me I would go for a variety of large mbuna of all different colours because the variety and size in a large tank gives it that "wow" factor where most people will find it visually appealing. Whereas Tanganyikan cichlids are gorgeous but I find people normally have to be quite fascinated in fish to have them appeal to them as much. I'll definitely make a video on this topic comparing the two at some point 😊

They actually perfer rock scaping that have vertical vrs horizontal caves from what I understand, although I know plenty who breed them with piles of flat rocks. Edit: I am obsessed with julidochromis transcriptus. I have always wanted cichlids but my water is too hard for the dwarf south American species and i dont like chasing water parameters.
