I bought cult of the lamb, played it a little and put it down for a long long time. Just now getting back into and this was a cool interview to get me going back in despite my backlog of games 😂
This iterative process of trying something is really amazing. Try the idea and let the game decide what it wants to be. "Good games are played not made" - Emil Pagliarulo at BGS. It rings very true. Valve has a very similar strategy where they play or watch people play the game every friday from the first month.
WOW, WOW, WOW!! THANKS FOR THIS ADVICE!! It just seems to go against everything I learned about game design to not really use a GDD! GREAT VIDEO!! 👏 👏 👏
Cult of the lamb is a truly special game. It's a real success, as well as a super pleasant game to play... and yet, even if the game proposed is correct, technically it was a big mess with lots of major bugs, and quite a few game mechanics didn't make much sense from a gameplay point of view. And yet, it works! People want to play it. I still don't know what made the game stand out despite everything, while remaining simple. The atmosphere ? The mechanisms ? Marketing ? A little bit of everything ? Well done in any case!

On one hand indie devs take solace in the idea that their games don't need to have AAA graphics. On the other hand comparing the old and new footage of Cult of the Lamb you can really see how well quality can sell your game for you. One looks like something I am not interested in and the other looks like a "don't miss it" title.
Hi Thomas, can you plz start a new free tutorials on Unreal just like old days you used to make at the beginning. Those tutorials were amazing, easy, small & fun.
If you spent four years creating a game that makes you good money - you would then have a fanbase + online presence that could assist heavily creating the game you really want to make, which may get little to no traction otherwise. Provided you are doing something that may be mildly related - eg making a mobile bejeweled game is not going to have much cross over with an FPS, but other action style games would.
This will be a great video. I am close to finishing my game, but I lack great marketing skills. Hopefully this can teach me to improve a vital skill that will greatly help me and everyone else that really need it.
Thomas: Sell out! Make an unoriginal game idea to appeal to the masses. Interviewee: Don't sell out! Make an original idea you love, but present it in way that will appeal to the masses. Who should I listen to?😔
Thomas comes from a marketing background so his approach to games design is different to many other games developers. I'm more of the later than the former, I need to work on my marketing thing. 😁
@@undeadpresident as a 15 year old who is obviously a better dev than ANYONE who can't put in the work like someone like yourself I would like to tell you to get a life man. I like that. "Be sure to fulfill the promise of the hook" I needed to hear that
I really dig your editing. Putting relevant images and footage to the long talking sections is perfect.

This was a phenomenal conversation! More of this please 😊
Loved the podcast. Very inspiring for a solo game dev like me who is working on an open-world game myself. Thanks Thomas and Jay for this one ! 💚
Insightful, thanks Thomas
whoa, 1 million sales in one week? thats totally realistic!1!1!

Have a 100 million dollar marketing budget?

Was this interview not posted a week or so ago? I have already seen this video. What's going on?

What if there is no but, its a "personal" twis on a genre
Was so sad to see that this game has been leaked onto the pirate sites :(
no one would even play the game i made so maybe i'll just give it to the pirates so at least someone might try it
@@undeadpresident I'm sure there will be lots of people who would have a go at your game. Put out some playable demos if possible to gain interest.
@@DJDCRYPTER Did already. Nothing.
Very cool 😎
I'm building a videogame that teaches latins how to speak english. I hope I sell over 100,000 copies....
You can make an amazing game, but if it isn't marketed correctly, your game will fail.😞That's just how it turns out.

Cult of the lamb sucked tho :(
The notion of just the name - Cult of the Lamb - feels blasphemous to Christianity.
I know it’s just a game… but if you believe in God Thomas why you promoting a game promoting devil worship ?
cult of lamb stinks and break quite often
If this is a joke it's not a good one
